Power Mac G5 :: Unable To Open Superdrive

Dec 14, 2007

having read all the posts about the superdrive failures, mine seems to have died although it is a strange one. It's a Pioneer 107D and it reads, writes, and ejects if a disk is in it (sometimes)...however it will not open (without my trusty paperclip) from keyboard, fkey, drag disk to trash, startup with mouse button held, etc. etc. Terminal mode (drutil etc.) says drive is ok as does About my Mac. I can hear the mechanical attempts to open, but only the ol' paperclip seems to do the job. Any thoughts??? If I replace it are there any thoughts as to what people find reliable? I am thinking Litescribe at the moment (I do not "need" DL or BluRay).

Power Mac G5 :: When Is Superdrive Officially Dead

Oct 21, 2007

I have had my 2002 Quicksilver for 5 years now. I use it only for surfing the web & personal stuff. I do all my real video work on my quad G5, including burning DVDs. The G4's Superdrive isn't responding to anything. The eject button doesn't work (although the eject arrow appears on screen); Command-period does nothing; the "eject" command in firmware doesn't work (reads "can't EJECT"). Is there any way to run a diagnostic on the Superdrive ... to see if the problem is manageable, or irreparable? I can live with a slow drive that rejects some brands of DVDs ...but is she really dead as a doornail? Is there an apnea test for Superdrives?

Power Mac G5 :: SuperDrive Will Not Read Any Media

Oct 24, 2007

I have a Dual 2.5 GHz PowerMac G5 and out of nowhere the SuperDrive suddenly won't read anything. I put in a CD or DVD and it'll make a short whirring sound about every 4-5 seconds and then after the third time it automatically ejects the disc. Is my drive dead? The computer is still covered under my AppleCare protection plan. Do I need to just bring it in and have it replaced?

The guys at work convinced me that I could change out my own internal superdrive and I did. Now it will read disks but it won't burn from idvd or itunes. I get the message "burning preparation error: Not enough space for encoding the remaining assets. IMac :: Blank DVD Stuck In SuperDrive.... How To Open It

Dec 16, 2009

Okay so last night I was trying to burn a file with Disk Utility, as soon as I put the DVD in I heard it was making a little noise (most likely because there was dirt on it - I wasn't thinking properly). When it started to burn, I could hear it make noise....I didn't want to risk not having a smooth burn so I cancelled it, then tried to eject it......to no prevail.

I've tried everything in the book.......from repeatedly pressing the eject button on the keyboard, to restarting while holding down the mouse button, to tilting it on its side and let gravity do its job, to lightly smacking the back part of it........nothing is working

When I do try and eject it, I've noticed it makes 2 different sounds....1st one is, imagine the sounds it makes when you put a CD in....and also taking it out, those 2 sounds very close to each other. 2nd one is sort of like the CD rubbing against something, like a bandsaw but on a low level. It wants to work but something is getting it caught.....

OS X :: Superdrive Unable To Recognize - How To Repair

Apr 16, 2010

I have a pretty old (4-5 years old?) PowerBook G4, running 10.4.11. Recently the superdrive quit playing commercial DVDs. It will recognize CDs without a problem, but when I insert a DVD, the drive makes noises like it's reading the disc for maybe 20-30 sec. and then ejects the disc. I also tried to install Photoshop, but the drive wouldn't read the instal DVD either.

MacBook :: Unable To Insert CD In SuperDrive

Jul 15, 2009

So, I was using my UB MacBook earlier today. I had a CD in the superdrive. I was shutting down the computer, and all of a sudden, as the screen was going black, the disk in my computer came out half way and the superdrive made a noise. I quickly restarted my computer to see what went wrong. I tried putting the CD back in, it didn't work. You all know how the slot loading superdrives suck in CDs. I now slide the CD in, and it won't get sucked in. In fact, the whole CD won't even go in. A little bit of it still sticks out. So now I'm stuck with a dead superdrive wondering what to do to fix it.

MacBook Pro :: Dvd Stuck In Superdrive - Unable To Work

Nov 15, 2010

I picked up a 13" '08 Macbook pro, everything's great apart from a dvd being stuck in the drive.

I've tried all the usual tricks that come up on google, holding eject/trackpad on start up, eject in commands/itunes and the thin piece of card under/over the disc but nothing has worked.

When holding eject it sounds like the disc hits something as it tries to eject but due to the felt I can't see inside to see what it is?

Power Mac G5 :: Power LED On - Unable To Power Up

Dec 6, 2007

I just purchased a used Dual 2.5 GHz Power Macintosh G5 in immaculate condition. Worked fine for a couple of days, though I did notice that the fans would spin up loudly for a few seconds every now and then even while the computer was idle.

I decided to reset the PMU (which I have done many times over the years; I was once an Apple-trained systems engineer)I followed the recommended procedure; only pressed once, etc. Now the computer won't power up! The front power LED comes on and stays on when the AC cord is connected, but the computer doesn't start up or otherwise react to the power button. No fans, no video, nothing.

MacBook Air :: Slightly Ticker With Superdrive Or Slightly Thinner Without Superdrive?

Jul 27, 2008

I was thinking, for the next generation MacBook Air, would you want a slightly thicker (thickest part is 0.9in, tinnest is ~0.35in) laptop with a built in Superdrive, more ports, etc, or would you perfer that Apple moves away from this with a thinner computer (0.1in thinnest, 0.6in thickest), but with same limited ports.

I would actually perfer thicker with a superdrive, since I want an air but I want it to be like a MacBook but thinner. What do you think? Btw, this is assuming the regular MacBook does not change in size, since that would sway peoples opinions.

Power Mac G5 :: CD Drive Door Won't Open?

Dec 6, 2007

I'm having a problem getting my CD drive door to open (the CD drive was empty when the problem started). Have tried pushing and holding down keyboard eject key, holding down mouse key while restarting, and typing "eject cd" in open format. When I do these things, the drive repeatedly makes a sort of "grunt" (effort noise) but doesn't pop open, so this appears to be a mechanical problem. I removed the drive faceplate and was finally able to open the drive by pushing the manual eject button and pulling on the tray, though it requires some finagling and doesn't always work. When the tray does open this way, it does not automatically roll all the way out or back in, but has to be pulled/pushed, and once it shuts, it once more can't open without manual intervention. However, I discovered that as long as there's a CD in the tray, it opens and closes fine. While always keeping a CD in the drive is a temporary fix.

I still have a couple of OLD apps that require System 9. When I attempt to open either of them I get the "Classic is starting" progress bar, but it never quite finishes. I can start Classic okay with extensions off but then I can't use the printer, and my old copy of Photoshop Elements won't load no matter what I try. I get an error message when I try to run "Install Applications and Classic Support" from my installation disk.
