MacBook Air :: Slightly Ticker With Superdrive Or Slightly Thinner Without Superdrive?
Jul 27, 2008
I was thinking, for the next generation MacBook Air, would you want a slightly thicker (thickest part is 0.9in, tinnest is ~0.35in) laptop with a built in Superdrive, more ports, etc, or would you perfer that Apple moves away from this with a thinner computer (0.1in thinnest, 0.6in thickest), but with same limited ports.
I would actually perfer thicker with a superdrive, since I want an air but I want it to be like a MacBook but thinner. What do you think? Btw, this is assuming the regular MacBook does not change in size, since that would sway peoples opinions.
Actually I find this drive slightly noisy, not too bad but you can definitely hear it spinning and clicking every so often. Anyone else experience this or should I be worried?
I noticed my Macbook White (late 2009 model) right speaker is slightly louder than the left one. I have checked the sound balance on my sound setting and its set to balance. Some things I have noticed when playing with the settings. When i shift the balance to the left, there's sound on the right when it's not supposed to. Then when I shift to the right, the left speaker is quiet. This problem seems to happened on older Macbooks - [URL].
My lid seems to overhang very VERY slightly over the left side of the case. I got some people in my family to look at it, and they honestly don't even notice it. The distance is the thickness of a piece of paper. So small it is barely noticeable when looked at, but you can feel a slight difference when you rub your finger over the edge. Should I be concerned about this? I would take pictures of it, but the Macro mode on my camera isn't good enough to properly show this issue. Go Figure... Will this affect hard shell cases? I've also learned something. People that are O.C.D. really have a hard time enjoying their Macs. Seems like we spend more time scrutinizing every square inch of our equipment that we actually spend enjoying it.
I just turned on my mid 2009 13in Macbook Pro and noticed my display seems about 4 'clicks' dimmer than before. Everything else works fine. Can LED screens dim over time? Could my LED driver somehow have caused the screen to dim? Can just the LED portion of my display be replaced?
I'm the owner of a Macbook Pro with 4 gig RAM and a 320gb harddrive. However, I have noticed that the hard drive space is decreasing slightly for seemingly no reason. Case in point, today it went from 197.66gb to 197.50 whilst I was watching TV and just before it went down further for no reason whatsoever.
Although its not a big deal it does arouse my curiosity and annoy me. Is it just virtual memory that will eventually come back or something more sinister? If it continues for a long time the space lost will eventually add up. Since I'm planning on soon buying an iMac these are the sorts of things I need to know.
I have a fairly recent 17" MBP and I've discovered today that the headphone socket is a bit looser than I'm used to. My usual headphones click in as usual, but very little effort is required to pull them out. I have recently been using a client's cable to hook my MBP up to their speakers, and I have a feeling that the 3.5mm jack (which was a fairly tight fit) has somehow worn the socket.
Is it possible that using a slightly 'fatter' jack can damage a socket like that? I'm a bit wary of people plugging their cables into my laptop now, as I don't want to exacerbate the problem! Anyone else experienced this?
I just got a MacBook Pro, and the button being part of the trackpads touch area is cusing me problems. Freuently when I go to click the button it moves the cursor slightly causing the click to be in the wrong place.
Is there a way to turn off the lower area of the trackpad or something? Can I replace it with a trackpad with a seperate button?
Hope you can help out here. Been having a few problems reading DVDs ( slightly funny sound when spinning then spits them out ) - although it would read some OK, such as System disk.I out in a DVD just now, and it pulled it in, but then nothing - no spinup at all.And now I can't eject it - tried the eject button, logging out and back in again, restarting while holding down the trackpad button.Nothing worksAny ideas?Macbook Pro 2.8
I've recently bought the stock 17" MBP and am loving it! However just a quick question to all those who have used it. I have noticed that when I pick it up, the bottom panel underneath sort of bends slightly when my fingers press against it. It feels like the alu is bending slightly only in certain places on the base. I may just be another paranoid mac freak but has anyone else found this? I had an old 15" MBP and didn't have any similar issues with that. Loving the computer tho, the screen is fantastic!
Yesterday I have noticed slight change of colors on my iMac 27 inch monitor. The change was really subtle but newer the less important. I'm an illustrator and I use subtle textures and brushes in my work. Yesterday suddenly, those textures were not subtle on some pictures on my web site but really noticeable. Especially on black on black textures (when you have different shades of black/gray). I thought that the mistake is coming from Safari browser, but the same thing was visible on the Chrome too and when I opened same pictures like jpeg with Preview or Photoshop. After that I noticed that generally all display was slightly brighter, slightly more bluish. I didn't do anything unusual to make it that way. Today, after putting iMac to sleep and turn it up again the colors are like they used to be and it seems that problem is solved. I would like to know what went wrong with the display/monitor, because I have worked all day yesterday on my illustrations with wrong display of colors and now I will have to correct them today.I have run Profile first aid with ColorSinc but result was that everything was ok, no problem find.
I have the rev. C Air, recently bought. It works fine but I have noticed that when I tilt the screen back almost all of the way that the front left side lifts slightly off the desk. I can see that the front left pad is not touching the desk. Is this an idiosyncrasy of the computer? Do others have the same symptom? Of course once I place my hands on the computer and start typing it's not really a problem, but I can certainly feel it click down to the desk or if I lift my hands off and slightly push down there is a space there. I think it is a weight issue, because once I pull the screen slightly towards me the space disappears as well as the issue.
This is going to date you all a lot but I have a powermac g3 (640mb ram, 300mhz) with a 15" apple crt monitor. I moved it into a new room and all of a sudden the display is virbrating slightly. If I switch the refresh rate back to 60 it goes away but then that looks so bad that I have to bump it back up to 70hz. Is there any settings that I can change to fix this vibrating? Like I said, this didn't happen until I moved the computer 20 feet into a neighboring room.
I created my website with iWeb 1.1.2 & have had absolutely no issues with it from running Tiger right through to Snow Leopard (10.6.2) which I am running at present. However, in the past couple of days, I have noticed a few strange issues with a few of the images...they appear to be slightly out of focus...not only on photographs but also on parts of my website whereby I have added text & these are then saved as PNG files. I haven't changed any preferences whatsoever & everything appears as it should within iWeb itself.
The issue is only occurring once I have published to a folder. I've emptied the Cache in my Browser but the issue is still there. I've added a link below to an image which shows the problem I am having. The top & bottom appear as it should however the centre appears very soft. It doesn't appear like this within iWeb, only once I publish the files. [URL] Would it be worth deleting the preference file for iWeb, & then relaunching the application?
I am a brand new Mac user. I have just purchased a MacBook Pro and need advice as to the best way to use my external hard drive with iTunes.I have read previous answers regarding the above question, however I do not currently have any music on my new iTunes and it is already all on my external hard drive. Does this mean I need to complete a slightly different process? Also what must I do when I load new music on to my external?
I have a Dual 2GHz PowerPC with the stock video card (ATI Radeon 9600 Pro) and have had a Dell 2405FPW monitor connected to it via DVI cable and it has worked flawlessly for a couple of years... until this week.
Now the image seems to be "off" by about one or two pixels. Just a bit blurry here and there and when I move the mouse across the screen, the entire screen image seems to shift a little bit.
I've tried power cycling, re-connecting the cable, unplugging everything, resetting the monitor settings in the control panel, factory-reset of the LCD settings..

I calibrated my MacBook Pro battery and then noticed that the battery life seemed slightly shorter after that. I calibrated it according to this: [URL]
Just wondering if I have done anything wrong...
One more question... What do they mean by "At this point, save your work. Continue to use your computer; when the battery gets very low, the computer will automatically go to sleep." Does it mean that I have to use the computer until it just shuts down or should I shut it down once the "Low Battery" warning pops up?
i seem to have a problem with my airports performance lately, it seems to take ages to load up pages. is there anything i can do to boost its performance without actually having to buy peripherals. my second problem is that i want to connect my superdrive trough a hub but it seems to be impossible can any one plz help URGENT.
I would like to reinstall my MBA, I have not the superdrive, how can I proceed, I would like the next owner of my laptop to have my computer like New In Box.
I've done searches here on this topic, and it seems like everyone gave in and picked up the Superdrive.
I've made a partition using bootcamp assistant, and I have an .iso of the legal disk. I used to install a VMware image, but I plan to replace it with the bootcamp image once I get that done; haven't even activated windows.
I have installed rEFIt; have the .iso and the files copied from the iso into the BOOTCAMP partition; but when it tries to boot to there, it complains about not being a system disk, or some such. One poster noted having two entries in rEFIt, and the useful one had something about a boot/cdboot.efi option, but I don't see that option in rEFIt anywhere.
Has anyone else made progress on this?
Also, it'd be great if one of these things could be made sticky, given the hassle it seems to be, and the several threads that have cropped up with questions, and not much in the way of answers.
i know that the superdrive cannot be connected to the mini Via USB, which is a pain, but what if i were to buy the superdrive, take it apart and hook it up to my mini, replacing the Combo Drive already in there, Would that work i'm as assuming that it would all be compatible.
Not as impossible as everyone says, and no hardware modding needed. Note this is currently any PC, not any Mac - it works on my MacBook Pro in Boot camp, but I haven't tried doing this in OS X yet. I will do tonight if I have time. Here's instructions anyway: [URL]
Anyone using anything decent or just chucking it in your bag and hoping it doesn't get scratched/dropped?
Currently using a modded leather square CD storage thingie, but it's a bit thick, kind of defeats the purpose. Wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fixed USB cable which gets snagged.
Strange that the usual suspects (Tucano etc.) haven't made a custom case for this peripheral.
I am having trouble getting any DVDs to burn on my 2.2GHz SR MBP. I have tried using Toast as well as the Finder and I keep getting an error message. I have tried restarting the computer and trying a different brand of DVD. The drive can read DVDs just fine but I can't seem to burn anything successfully. This happened several months ago but went away when I retried burning the disk.
Sorry if this is a redundant question but how do you boot off a MBA superdrive.. does the disc show up on the desktop and you just choose to install it? I don't get what is happening internally on an Air.
I've never tried booting off USB before, in all my years on Mac, including the time I tried, but failed to boot off USB on a 1998 iMac G3 with no firewire.
I'm trying to boot frm the iso file to flash my run core drive to a new fw and after trying everything my MBA just doesn't recognize the drive. The drive however does pop up when the MBA is loaded in normal mode.
