OS X :: Start Up Disc Full And I Can't Open Disc Drive?

Apr 4, 2009

My G-4 startup disc is full and now the computer won't start up. I am told to put a startup disc in the drive and restart from it, but I cannot get the disc drive to open. I have tried everything, including copying over to external hard drive. I read that if you hold the mouse button down, the disc drive will open, but this hasn't worked.

OS X :: Using Iomega Hard Disc Drives?

Jun 11, 2009

I'm looking to get a new 1.5TB or 2TB hard drive with FW connectivity for mostly backup purposes.

It seems that Iomega makes some of the most price efficient drives of high capacity.

Does anyone have anything to say about the brand? Any horror stories or positive reviews?

Being that it's a backup drive for a lot of digital video... it needs to be reliable.

Mac Pro :: New Advanced Format Hard Disc Drives

Apr 24, 2010

I bought a new Hard Drive today.

It's a 1.5TB Western Digital GreenPower WD15EARS with "Advanced Format" and a huge, 64mb Cache. I wasn't intending to get anything special, just more space.

Apparently "Advanced Format" means the drive sectors are 4kb instead of the usual 512b.

This has apparently been in the works for some time but is just now being phased in.

OSX back to Tiger (10.4) supports Advanced Format drives with no issues.

The big hold up has been Windows 5 (XP) and earlier. Using one of these drives with XP could cause a real slowdown unless special precautions are taken.

The drive installed and formatted normally under Snow Leopard. According to AJA System Test, the 5400rpm GP drive is indeed slower than my WD Blacks (duh!) and a 7200rpm Hitachi. I have yet to compare it to one of my external "regular" GreenPower drives by mounting one internally.

Here's a good description:[URL]

Any thoughts as to how this new formatting will affect Macs in particular?

IMac :: 27" Replace Hard Disc With 2 Notebook Drives?

Jul 26, 2010

I'm wondering if there is a way (and room) to replace the standard drive with 2 hard drives. I was thinking something like a 128G SSD and then the biggest notebook drive I can get (7200rpm).

The SSD would be the primary drive and should just scream.

OS X :: Error Messages With External Drives While Disc Cleanup/how Do I Make That Space Available?

Feb 12, 2009

so i have been using pc all my life, but now i have a new macbook and ive been downloading a lot of things. the other day an error popped up and said i was running low on disk space... ive been lazy about "reconfiguring my external hard drive for my mac" like the apple employee told me i needed to do, but i decided i should finally do it to free up space on my computer.

i have a seagate external hard drive and i plugged it into my computer and erased everything on it so i could start using it with time machine. after it started backing everything up an error popped up saying that i only have 2.2 MB available.... so on my system preferences i reconfirmed that it says 2.2 MB of 232.9 GB available. this doesnt make any sense because i just wiped my external drive, plus i didnt have much on it to begin with.

so i guess my question is, how do i make that space available?

also, i mainly wanted to back up all of my documents, music, and movies so that i could delete some movies and documents from my computer that i dont need every day and make space for more, but then when i plug my ext hard drive back in to my computer, wont it just mirror my computer with time machine and defeat the purpose of storing things on it because they will just be deleted?

i know im lame, but im really trying to get used to my mac which i know is way easier than im making it out to be.

Power Mac G5 :: Drives Only Mount Randomly?

Oct 3, 2007

Except for the drive with the system on it the drives (whether CDs, DVDs, Sata Drives, internal drives, Firewire, network,...) drives only mount randomly. And often after ejecting them they often don't disappear and stay on the desktop. I've got a couple of Raids (one internal and one external Sata II) and one of them is hardly ever recognized on startup and I have to get it in the disk utility. Most recently even toast has started to fail if asked to copy cds or dvds (I presume because they are not mounted proplery).

Power Mac G5 :: Adding ATA Drives To System?

Nov 13, 2007

I have a PowerMac G5 dual 2.3 ghz w/ 1gb ram and a G4 Quicksilver with 2 internal ATA drives
Internal drive specs : 2 IBM 180GB IDE/ATA-5 Deskstar 8MB 180GXP 7200 rpm
There is also an ATA card that was installed to be able to run these drives in the G4 - don't have specs available right now. Is it physically possible to transfer these drives to the G5? Will I have to transfer the card also? Is it likely to cause any problems -compatibility , speed, etc? The drives are currently full of media - how risky is it to move them from one system to another?

Power Mac :: G5 Won't Detect Hard Drives

Mar 28, 2012

This is an intermittent problem. I have a dual processor PowerMacG5 2GHz. The computer won't boot up. Used disc utility to find out that no hard drive was detected. Thought hard drive was bad. Installed new hard drive. Installed Tiger. Rebooted. Computer won't boot, disc utility shows no hard drive. Unplugged computer. Removed hard drive. Started disc utility from disk. Turned off machine. Unplugged. Installed hard drive. Started up machine. Machine runs fine. Now turned machine off and tried to restart again, now no hard drive detected again. Redid unplugging and reinstallation of hard drives. Now both hard drives works fine. This problem can be repeated. I prefer not to ever turn off my machine again. Startup procedure with unplugging, reinstallation of hard drives is just a pain.

PowerPC :: Powerbook G4 Won't Power Up - Battery Indicator Showed One Flickering Power Circle?

Mar 19, 2008

My girlfriend has a 12 inch Powerbook G4. She noticed that the battery life was starting to dwindle. Tonight, she tried using it. It wouldn't power up. The battery indicator showed one flickering power circle. The adaptor has the green circle on it, indicating the battery has a full charge. However, the computer won't charge up.I've read the 12 inchers don't have separate PMUs. Could that prevent the machine from starting? She was using it earlier this evening, as she e-mailed me pictures from our vacation.

PowerPC :: IBook G4 - When I Press Power Button, Power Fan Comes On, But No Picture Shows

Feb 10, 2008

I have a iBook G4 laptop and there seems to be something very wrong with it. It started a few days ago just randomly. I was reading something on the internet and the screen went black on me, but the power was still on (I clicked CAPS LOCK to see if there was power). I then proceeded to push the power button and the power went off. When I pressed the power button again to turn it on, it made that internal noise it always makes and then the fan came on, and wouldn't turn off. There was no picture on the screen at all. Completely dead. But there was power, because when I clicked on the CAPS LOCK, the light came on). I tried pressing on the power button for at least 15 seconds and even went as long as a minute, and the power didn't go off.

Hardware :: Keyboard Cannot Power UP Two Flash Drives?

Nov 12, 2010

I have an aluminum numeric keyboard. and when I plugged in two scandisk Cruzer usbdrives it said that one of them wasn't getting enough power. So I read online and saw that some people said windows can provide enough power for both. So I turn on my virtual windows machine (which automatically mounted the usb drive that was connected) and then my mac was able to mount the second usb drive! But when I let windows try to host both drives in the keyboard windows said it couldn't power both devices either! this may just be because it was a vm.

But my point is at one time I had access to both drives in my keyboard(with one os for each one) but when using just a single one it wont work. Is there any way to change a setting so I can push out more power to my usb keyboard? I'm perfectly fine with terminal and editing files, but is there a setting to change anywhere?(it's only getting 300mA and the usb drives need 200 each and the keyboard itself needs 20 so that all fits in the 500mA range).

Power Mac :: Converter Cable For Hard Drives?

Jun 9, 2012

I have a IBM Deskstar ATA/IDE hard drive, model DTLA-305040 that came out of a Power Mac G4 (Quicksilver) whose power supply died.  I'm trying to install the hard drive in the open bay of a Power Mac G5 9,1 - A1093 with a 1.8 GHz processor, which (I think/guess) takes a SATA hard drive.  Is there a cable I can use to make the hard drive "compatible" inside the G5?  Or would it be better to just get a cable to access the hard drive externally, copy the data off it and then be done with the old hard drive?  It's pretty old and apparently these IBM Deskstar drives had a lot of issues.

Power Mac :: Dead G5, Makes Hurricane Noise, Drives Ok

Mar 14, 2012

My trusty PPC g5 from 2004 has died, or at least it won't start.  It shows the grey apple screen, but no spinner, and after a few minutes the fans kick in and build to a wind-tunnel noise.

I don't have a backup of this machine, or it's other drive, so I am nervous about taking it into Apple where they might just wipe it.

Also, I surprisingly CAN start it up in Firewire disk mode, and both drives seem to be OK when accessed from another computer.

So I've copied off the most important things, and I will probably try to make clones. But before I finally cart it into Apple (where it will probably cost more than its worth to fix it),

PowerPC :: Making Power Button Shut Power Mac Off?

Oct 7, 2006

I'm using a B&W Power Mac G3 with 512MB RAM and OS X Tiger for a SMB file server (with 5 users) and a USB printer server. Everything is working good, but I have a problem.

It doesn't have a monitor or keyboard/mouse attached normally (I can configure it via VNC). The problem is that I would like to be able to turn the machine off when it's not needed (like at night sometimes, days when I won't be home, etc.). I would like to just hit the power button and have it turn off, however it puts it to sleep instead.

Normally, sleep would be fine, except on the B&W, the fans still run, just the HDs shut off, so it's still noisy as heck.

Is there a way to make the power button shut it off? If not, any other easy methods of shutting it off you can think of? Via VNC won't cut it, as my dad needs to be able to turn it on (not a problem) or off as well.

PowerPC :: Drives Can Be Reflashed For Using On Mac?

I saw the Sony Blu-Ray and a Memorex/Sony/LG DVD Superdrive and was wondering that if the box says that they are only PC, does that mean that they aren't compatible with Mac? Also can these drives be reflashed for use on a Mac? I would be very interested in sticking the Blu-Ray Sony drive on my G3.
