Power Mac G5 :: SuperDrive Will Not Read Any Media

Oct 24, 2007

I have a Dual 2.5 GHz PowerMac G5 and out of nowhere the SuperDrive suddenly won't read anything. I put in a CD or DVD and it'll make a short whirring sound about every 4-5 seconds and then after the third time it automatically ejects the disc. Is my drive dead? The computer is still covered under my AppleCare protection plan. Do I need to just bring it in and have it replaced?

OS X :: SuperDrive Started Ejecting Any Sort Of Media

Apr 20, 2009

Recently, my internal superdrive started ejecting any sort of media I'd insert, about 30 seconds of chewing on it and then spitting it back out. Does that mean the drive's dead, I can't even run hardware test since I can't mount the boot disc that originally came with the PB? The weird thing is that it is showing in System Profiler and there aren't any messages or errors! I tried inserting a cleaning disc but it received the same treatment as any other cd or dvd I had tried inserting.

Mac Pro :: SuperDrive Make Scrapping Noise When Burned Media Inserted

Feb 14, 2008

I just got my shiny new mac today. I'm ecstatic, as you can imagine. Except the optical drive is being weird. When I insert some types of burned media (Sony, TDK) it makes horrible scraping noises (I think I even smelled something bad too) and doesn't read the disc. TDK and Sony are good brands. They work on everything else I've ever tried. So, I'm guessing this isn't normal?

I tried calling AppleCare but what do you know, they're 6am to 6pm, which is great. So while I wait I wanted to ask - is this going to be an easy "they give me a new drive and I put it in" type of deal, or am I going to have to be cutting some red tape? And can I do this at the apple store?

MacBook Air :: Superdrive Can't Read CD

May 17, 2012

I have a Macbook Air, Version 10.7.2 with a superdrive. Upon inserting a CD with photos on it, I could not find the CD in the finder. However when I inserted the CD into an older mac, the CD showed up on the desktop with all its photos. The superdrive runs DVD's fine, any reason why it would not run the CD? Anything I can do to make it read the CD?

Power Mac G5 :: Unable To Read Commercial Dvds / Tries To Read It Then Spits Them Back Out

Oct 17, 2007

The drive in my G5 tower will read/write commercial or blank CDs and will read/write blank DVDs, however, it will not read most commercial DVDs. When I insert them it tries to read it then after a few seconds it just spits them back out. Occasionally commercial DVDs will read and mount fine, but this seems to be rare.

Mac Pro :: Superdrive - Hangs While Trying To Read Disc

Oct 22, 2010

I am having an issue where the superdrive in my BRAND NEW mac pro isn't working correctly. It doesn't read DVD's consistently, System profiler hangs when you click on disc burning and after that the drive does not respond to eject commands. When you do get the tray to open, insert a DVD that is a known good disc, it will "mount" on the desktop then when you click on it, it hangs trying to read the disc. When you right click and select eject, the icon just goes away and the disc does not eject. A restart at least allows me to eject the disc. Resetting SMC has no effect on the drives behaviour. Or suggest a good aftermarket DVD drive?

Mac Pro :: Vista 64-bit - Superdrive Can't Read Discs?

Feb 27, 2008

I just got a Mac Pro (2006/2007) and Installed Vista Ultimate x64 from a DVD. When I rebooted and got to the Vista desktop, it no longer lets me used the superdrive. I can eject it from Vista but when I insert a disc, all it does is spin up forever and lock up Vista.

I have reloaded Vista 3 times and get the same issue. Everything else works except the superdrive.

MacBook Pro :: Burned CD Won't Read In Superdrive?

Apr 7, 2012

When I was discharged from the hospital recently, they gave me a disc with all of my x-rays.  Unfortunately, the disc won't read in my MBP.  It inserts just fine, spins for a second, but never actually mounts on the desktop.  When I eject the disc, I see the cd mount image briefly appear on the desktop before the disc pops out.

how I can get this disc to mount without pulling out my crusty windows laptop?

Mac Mini :: Cannot Read Leopard Superdrive Disk

Dec 28, 2009

I am trying to upgrade my Dad's mac mini to Snow Leopard and have encountered a problem. When I insert the Leopard disk I cannot get it to read the disk, the box comes up as if I have inserted a blank DVD. I have also tried inserting ilfe09 disk and have the same problem. The drive does appear to be making an odd bleaping. I have tried resetting the PRAM and cannot get it to bleap?

Mac Pro :: Superdrive Won't Read DVDs After Lion Update?

Feb 24, 2012

Ever since I updated my '10 Mac Pro to Lion (months ago), my original built in superdrive will not read any DVD's or CD's, commercial or not, that have data on them... It simply assumes the disk is blank when it clearly isn't.  Now, if I insert a blank DVD and burn it, it works like a charm... but it will then NOT read the disk that it just burned???  How and why did Lion break my superdrive?

Intel Mac :: 'superdrive' Doesn't Read Or Recognize Film Dvds

May 8, 2012

Nothing appears on the desktop, and the DVD doesn't play (this is the second DVD I've tried).  The drive works to download software though.  These are commercial DVDs from Lovefilm in the UK - there are bound to be some scratches - does this mean I can only play new DVDs?

Also, if I click Finder to eject the DVD, the command is light gray, meaning the IMAC has not actually registered that there's a DVD in the drive, so I have to log off and on again for the DVD icon to appear on the desktop, at which point I can eject it.  However, if I click it, it doesn't play. I'd really like to play films if I can.

I don't know what operating system I have, except that it's MAC OS X. I only just got it new two days ago.

Mac Mini :: Does Not Read CDs / DVDs (Optical Media)

Jul 2, 2009

I have a 2009 2.0 C2D Mac Mini that I upgraded to 4 GB RAM from the standard 1 GB RAM. It does not read CDs/DVDs or any other optical media. When I check the profiler for the SATA connection, I get:

OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S:
Model:OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S
Revision:2AHF
Native Command Queuing:No
Detachable Drive:No
Power Off:No
Async Notification:Yes

When I check the profiler for disc burning, I get:

OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S:
Firmware Revision:2AHF
Interconnect:ATAPI
Burn Support:Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache:2048 KB
Reads DVD:Yes
CD-Write:-R, -RW
DVD-Write:-R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies:CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media:Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

It seems the controller is good and is seeing the DVD drive, but it just won't read anything included DVD movies and CDs that I bought off the shelf.

Power Mac G5 :: When Is Superdrive Officially Dead

Oct 21, 2007

I have had my 2002 Quicksilver for 5 years now. I use it only for surfing the web & personal stuff. I do all my real video work on my quad G5, including burning DVDs. The G4's Superdrive isn't responding to anything. The eject button doesn't work (although the eject arrow appears on screen); Command-period does nothing; the "eject" command in firmware doesn't work (reads "can't EJECT"). Is there any way to run a diagnostic on the Superdrive ... to see if the problem is manageable, or irreparable? I can live with a slow drive that rejects some brands of DVDs ...but is she really dead as a doornail? Is there an apnea test for Superdrives?

Power Mac G5 :: Unable To Open Superdrive

Dec 14, 2007

having read all the posts about the superdrive failures, mine seems to have died although it is a strange one. It's a Pioneer 107D and it reads, writes, and ejects if a disk is in it (sometimes)...however it will not open (without my trusty paperclip) from keyboard, fkey, drag disk to trash, startup with mouse button held, etc. etc. Terminal mode (drutil etc.) says drive is ok as does About my Mac. I can hear the mechanical attempts to open, but only the ol' paperclip seems to do the job. Any thoughts??? If I replace it are there any thoughts as to what people find reliable? I am thinking Litescribe at the moment (I do not "need" DL or BluRay).

PowerPC :: Using Power Mac G4 As A Media And TM Server - Will This Work

Jan 21, 2009

We've got two laptops in the house (my Powerbook 12 and wife's Macbook) and I've just bought an old 500Mhz AGP Power Mac G4 from eBay, partly to mess around with, partly because it was a great deal, and partly because I want to use it as a media server. What I'd like to do is have:

- iPhoto running on the server - cameras would be plugged in there, photos downloaded etc and photos streamed to the Apple TV

- iTunes running on the server - other machines in the house plus the Apple TV accessing the shared server

- printer sharing running through the server

- Time Machine partitions set up on the server for both my wife and I - set up as double our raw drive space (so 160GB and 320GB)

I've already upped the RAM to 1.25GB and swapped in two 120GB IDE drives. I'm looking to add a Sonnet PCI SATA card and a couple of 1TB Samsung drives, one to host the media and one to host the Time Machine partitions. The media drive would then be backed up weekly to an offboard brick.

So before I go ahead with this grand plan, I thought I'd solicit views on whether it's likely to work, where the bear traps are etc. I guess some of the specific questions I have include:

- is there likely to be a performance issue with the PowerMac in this role?

- can I stream photos to an Apple TV? I know it works with iTunes but thought I'd check on iPhoto

- would Time Machine work OK over a network? Any issue with hosting two TM partitions on the same drive?

The Power Mac is running Tiger, the others are running Leopard.

ITunes :: Media Folder Location Moved - Deleted All Media?

Apr 24, 2012

I recently changed the iTunes Media Folder default location to a different area on my drive. I waited a couple minutes and the files did not move. I was unaware you had to go into your settings and also select to consolodate files. Since the files didn't move I reselected my default location and kept trying to go back and forth a couple times. After letting it sit for a couple more minutes I noticed over 200 GB's of files were missing. I looked in each folder I tried to change the default Media Folder location to but they were not in either of them. I have also ran multiple system file recover programs and been unable to find them.

MacBook Air :: Slightly Ticker With Superdrive Or Slightly Thinner Without Superdrive?

Jul 27, 2008

I was thinking, for the next generation MacBook Air, would you want a slightly thicker (thickest part is 0.9in, tinnest is ~0.35in) laptop with a built in Superdrive, more ports, etc, or would you perfer that Apple moves away from this with a thinner computer (0.1in thinnest, 0.6in thickest), but with same limited ports.

I would actually perfer thicker with a superdrive, since I want an air but I want it to be like a MacBook but thinner. What do you think? Btw, this is assuming the regular MacBook does not change in size, since that would sway peoples opinions.

I just switched from Snow leopard to Lion and i don't like the way that Lion has the mail preview set up as a 3 column vertical format.  I thought in Snow Leopard you could change the set-up so it's either horizontal or vertical, but I can't seem to find that option in Lion.  I want to have the list of my email messages in the top, horizontal window and the preview of the selected message in a horizontal window below.
