I a new to mac. I am trying to open a ".config" file but I get this error message: "There is no default application specified to open the document xxxx". Normally, on a Windows, I would just force open it with notepad as it conly contain text. How do I do the same with a Mac?

Here is how it goes, I download the file DMG file and it opens it with DiskImageMounter and it shows up in Finder after it is done downloading, I click on the package to install it and it will never open up; the prompt "There was an error opening this document. There was a Macintosh system error(-1409)"
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have recently dipped a toe into the world of torrents (I know this is probably something that you cannot be seen to condone), some software packages contain exe files which previously my Macbook Pro, running Tiger, has been able to read and open but recently TextEdit has been set as the default application to open them. I'm not sure how this has happened, is there anyway around this without having to reboot the OS?

I have Office 2008 Home and Student installed on my MBP. I recently upgraded to a hosted Exchange solution and they offer a download of Entourage 2008 that will allow Exchange Server interaction. When I loaded that version over top of my install, Entourage will not open. It gives me an error about the identity not being able to open the item.
I've tried to install two different programs, one is a PDF veiwer, and the other is the program MAX/MSP onto my macbook pro and I keep getting the following message when I try to install: "There is no application set to open the document “Max 6 Installer'"

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy MacBook Pro will not open any app or program that requires Internet, even though I am connected to the web. I recently installed Norton AntiVirus and think it may have changed a setting that I couldn't find. I uninstalled Norton and it didn't help. Every time I open Safari, iTunes or any other program that tries to connect to the Internet, it crashes. Strangely enough, Skype still works, but nothing else. I have OSx 10.6.8.  I have tried erasing plists, and all the standard troubleshooting, ie resetting modem, restarting computer, reloading Safari from disk.Â

I have a problem with Office 2008. Every time that i receive a word document that has inside a powerpoint presentation and i double click it i get the message: word can not edit the microsoft powerpoint 97-2003 presentation. Also i have a CD that has some adobe and word documents attached to a powerpoint presentation and when i click on them i get a message that the path/object could not be found. But poth these document and CD when i put them in a PC they open without any problems.

I can still play the movie file in Quicktime, but only if I right click it and select it from the "Open With" menu.
Every time I open a document in word, the elements gallery automatically opens. I don't use this feature. Anyone know how to turn it off? I tried finding a way in preferences but didn't see anything.

Problem: I don't have my old Excel (or at least I can't find it). I do still have my old copies of Office 95 for PC but that doesn't seem to open it either. Probably because back in the day, it wasn't directly compatible. What I need is to be able to open this file in something and get it converted to OpenOffice, Office X or Office 2003.
I downloaded an app called Cyberduck, and put it in my Applications folder, as you normally would. But when I open it, it immediately closes again.What's weird is if I put the file in any other folder (Desktop, Downloads, etc) and open it, it opens fine, stays open, and works great.If I put it back in my Applications folder, problem returns.This has happened with a few versions of Cyberduck, in a few different 10.6.x versions of OS X, and both on my old iMac and new MBP.I've never seen this with any other program. Any ideas?

I specified Microsoft Word when asked as that seemed the most logical contender, but I can't open it in any of the formats that offers. At least, I can open the file, but it comes out as a garbled mass of symbols. Please could someone tell me how to change the default for opening it and what to change it to?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'd like all my finder windows to appear the same when navigating through folders, but I'm noticing that finder is not always taking notice of the "set as defaults" button. The way I've tried to do it is to open a finder window and push cmd+J. I prefer the list view, so I check the "always open in list" box, set the icon size and uncheck "icon preview".
However, as I navigate deeper into folders, I notice some folders will no longer remember these and for example, will start to show the icon preview. In Windows, I remember you used to set up a random window to appear exactly how you wanted it, enter folder options and hit "default view for all windows".
By default, I save all my word documents in rich text format (.rtf). After I installed Snow Leopard, these files now open by default with Text Edit.
Since I want these files to open by default in Microsoft Word 2008, I right clicked on the file, chose "other", selected "Word 2008", and then checked "always open with". However, the files still open by default in Text Edit...
How do I set my Mac up so that when I get a Word, Excel or Powerpoint file, I can click on it to open it and have it automatically open in Pages, Numbers or Keynote?
