OS X :: Superdrive Unable To Recognize - How To Repair
Apr 16, 2010
I have a pretty old (4-5 years old?) PowerBook G4, running 10.4.11. Recently the superdrive quit playing commercial DVDs. It will recognize CDs without a problem, but when I insert a DVD, the drive makes noises like it's reading the disc for maybe 20-30 sec. and then ejects the disc. I also tried to install Photoshop, but the drive wouldn't read the instal DVD either.

My MacBook Pro running OSX Lion no longer recognizes blank discs: the disc does not appear on the desktop or in finder.
When I try to burn a playlist from iTunes I get the error message: "The burner is in use by another application".I am also unable to eject the disc using Disk Utility and have to reboot to get the disc out.Other media discs (software, music etc.) are read without a problem.

Nothing appears on the desktop, and the DVD doesn't play (this is the second DVD I've tried). The drive works to download software though. These are commercial DVDs from Lovefilm in the UK - there are bound to be some scratches - does this mean I can only play new DVDs?
Also, if I click Finder to eject the DVD, the command is light gray, meaning the IMAC has not actually registered that there's a DVD in the drive, so I have to log off and on again for the DVD icon to appear on the desktop, at which point I can eject it. However, if I click it, it doesn't play. I'd really like to play films if I can.
I don't know what operating system I have, except that it's MAC OS X. I only just got it new two days ago.

It's been almost over 6 month, I didn't run "Disk Utility" on my Early 2006 Tiger MacBook.
As of tonight, I I just run "Verify Disk" .... FAILED to complete. So it won't let me click "Repair Disk" (inactive; no way to click).
That means I have to use my Tiger DVD boot up from superdrive!
Problem is my superdrive has been not responding at all for a couple of month. Since I don't use it at all, I didn't care.
... but now I need to run my Tiger original DVD
What should I do?
Please let me know how to proceed to repair my HD without using superdrive as it is not working. Any alternative?

having read all the posts about the superdrive failures, mine seems to have died although it is a strange one. It's a Pioneer 107D and it reads, writes, and ejects if a disk is in it (sometimes)...however it will not open (without my trusty paperclip) from keyboard, fkey, drag disk to trash, startup with mouse button held, etc. etc. Terminal mode (drutil etc.) says drive is ok as does About my Mac. I can hear the mechanical attempts to open, but only the ol' paperclip seems to do the job. Any thoughts??? If I replace it are there any thoughts as to what people find reliable? I am thinking Litescribe at the moment (I do not "need" DL or BluRay).

So, I was using my UB MacBook earlier today. I had a CD in the superdrive. I was shutting down the computer, and all of a sudden, as the screen was going black, the disk in my computer came out half way and the superdrive made a noise. I quickly restarted my computer to see what went wrong. I tried putting the CD back in, it didn't work. You all know how the slot loading superdrives suck in CDs. I now slide the CD in, and it won't get sucked in. In fact, the whole CD won't even go in. A little bit of it still sticks out. So now I'm stuck with a dead superdrive wondering what to do to fix it.

I picked up a 13" '08 Macbook pro, everything's great apart from a dvd being stuck in the drive.
I've tried all the usual tricks that come up on google, holding eject/trackpad on start up, eject in commands/itunes and the thin piece of card under/over the disc but nothing has worked.
When holding eject it sounds like the disc hits something as it tries to eject but due to the felt I can't see inside to see what it is?

When I open Disk Utility and select one of the 2 volumes in the left pane, the buttons "Verify disk permissions" and "Repair disk permissions" remain greyed out. Only the "Repair disk" and "Verify disk" buttons are enabled. This is not the startup Volume. For this volume all 4 buttons are enabled.
How can I repair the disk permissions on the volume?

external harddrive (Seagate brand). I've bought DiskWarrior (the latest
version) and rebooted my mac to run the program. It recognized the
drive, but said it was not supported.
(i used to use it with my pc, but it did, once, run on the mac- until i yanked the cord out!)
Is there an issue with formatting that i need to get around so that my mac can read the drive to repair?

Lately, my MacBook Pro (mid 2010) started to slow down even with over 60% disk space is empty and max RAM is installed. It gets slow when using hungry programs such as Photoshop CS5.
I used the disk utility first aid and fixed all permissions that were shown with errors. When scanning the disk, I received the message that my disk is corrupt and I need to fix by restarting with command+R keys pressed until the apple symbol is displayed. When the next window shows up, choose disk utility and go from there to fix the disk.
When I performed that, I let go of the Command+R keys after the apple logo came up, the only thing that came up after that was a grey circle with a diagonal line through it and a spinning clock.

Im using a 17" unibody macbookpro 2.66 early 09 to make a copy of my Leopard Disc to put in an offsite storage location.
Im able to rip movies and burn movies (DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-DL), iMovie videos, iTunes cds, rip audio discs, etc.
The media is Dual-Layer DVD-R in disk utility
I burn it at the slowest possible speed (on both systems) at 2.4x
After it writes the data to the disc and finishes, i get this lovely image:

I have a 17inch intel iMac, early 2006 (the first release). A couple of days ago it decided it no longer wanted to boot up. Inserting the install DVD and running disk utilities verify/repair, it said that the volume had an invalid b-tree node size, and attempting to repair the volume failed.
Everything is backed up from this computer, so at this point in time I am only worried about getting it running again. So, I dug deeper to resolve the issue.

I have a Macbook pro 17" (2011) running Mavericks with a Crucial 960Gb SSD and a 750Gb WDC in the optical bay. My ssd is divided into 710 Gb to OS X and 182 Gb to Windows 7 Bootcamp. All was well until the other day when the OS X partition failed to boot. I got the grey screen and the very slow progress bar which after 15 minutes powered the machine off. The Bootcamp partion continues to work without issues. I booted from an install disk and ran disk utility. The OS X partition appears greyed out on the left panel. I attempt a repair disk and after a 15 minute delay it says it is unable to repair the last action being "updating boot support partitions for the volume as required". Its all backed up regularly on time machine but when I boot an install usb and attempt to restore from time machine, the OSX disk does not appear as an option. I go back into disk utility and attemp to erase/repartition the disk to start a new install but it refuses to unmount. I appear to be running out of options,

A month or so I got an iMac and it's been pretty awesome, despite two dead pixels! Today I wonder if perhaps I'm beyond help, and how in the world this could happen. This story begins with me using my Logitech MX Revolution mouse. It's a nice mouse, I really like it! When I first go the mac I promptly went to Logitech's site and downloaded the official logitech control center and everything worked out fine. Until a day ago, when I read that the logitech drivers are sort of sloppy, and using an utility such as USB overdrive, or steermouse would be better. (I decided to go for steermouse, as it looked to be more recently updated)
I uninstalled the logitech pref pane, and installed steermouse. This is where my troubles began. I couldn't quite seem to get the mouse to work properly, no matter what I tried on the menu. So I decided that, well, I guess this program is crap, and uninstalled it. When I went to reinstall the logitech pref pane, things started getting weird......................

I replaced the HDD with a new one and it does the same thing. I booted from a leopard disk and it wont recognize any HDD i have installed. I'm having a series of problems. First some intermittent audio problems with Garageband, then, then some external drives won't mount, and now I can't sync to my disk from the iMac. I've run Disk Utitilies a few times and when I do Verify Disk Permissions, it finds a list of things to fix, I then hit Repair Disk Permissions and it fixes them, and then hit Verify Disk, and it say the disk appears ok. When I do Verify Disk Permissions again though, it finds another long list of things to fix. Is this serious? What should my next step be? Should I reinstall the entire system?

I have a WD Passport 100Gb, USB, external hard drive that was being used on a windows pc as a back-up drive. I have since, successfully formatted it for use as a back-up drive on the Mac via Disk Utility and have been using it with Time Machine without any problems. It has proved to be a little small as a backup and has been replaced by another larger ext drive which is working fine. I now want to re - reformat the smaller WD disk back to be recognised on my Windows machine so that I can use it like a large memory stick and move Windows files (not Mac files) back and forth to work from home. I don't need to use it on the Mac again.
I have been singularly unsuccessful in getting the Windows machine to load the drive and recognise it. I feel sure that I have successfully converting the drive back to MS-DOS Fat32 format from Mac by using Disk Utility, but the Windows XP Home machine just refuses to recognise the drive even after repeated attempts to set it up as a Fat32 drive with one partition, set with a Master Boot Record 'scheme'. When I plug it into the Windows machine, it ticks like a clock and is recognised in Device Manager as a drive, (but not Explorer) and appears with an Error triangle, and in the 'properties' of that the drive is noted as "cannot start".

Yesterday I noticed that my computer had been trying to complete a backup for quite awhile... Well it turns out that it was only a 382KB backup and it was taking hours. I tried clicking "Stop backing up" and nothing happened. The drive was in a repetitious clicking rhythm, and when I tried to eject it, Finder said it was in use. I put my 10.5.2 install disk in and ran Disk Utility. I have two partitions on that drive, Beta and Charlie. Beta verified and repaired without a glitch, but my time machine partition, Charlie, said "Invalid node structure, volume check failed." Also, disk utility was unable to calculate how much space remained on that partition.
