Just wondering if it's worth getting a machine with 8Gb of RAM over the standard 4Gb for things like video editing, aperture etc. Can most of today's apps even use 8 gigs of memory? I assume the biggest advantage would be for running a virtual windows machine within OSX and things like that.

I've seen tests that indicate the rev b 1.86 is actually faster than the new 2.13. This will be my only personal mac. I wanted to post my observations on what it's like to upgrade - I know many Rev A owners have - or are thinking about - upgrading to Rev B. In this post/comparison, I refer to "Rev A" and "Rev B". The Rev A is my older 1.6GHz 80GB HDD MBA. The Rev B is my new 1.86GHz 128GB SSD MBA
Caveat - Unlike some (but not all!) Rev A MBA owners, I love my Rev A MBA. I've had zero problems with it. It runs cool and I have not experienced any core shut downs. It would heat up when most laptops normally heat up and the fans would kick. It would cool down quickly when I moved on to something else. With video it never stuttered... Perhaps my Rev A has run so nicely because I don't ask a lot of it. It is a second Mac to my Mac Pro - I use it primarily for email, word processing, iTunes movies and web surfing - on the couch and on the road. It has REALLY been a great laptop and I have nothing bad to say about it...................
I am looking to buy a new AEBS to replace my Linksys WRT610N. The Linksys has dual simultaneous 5 & 2.4GHz capability as well, but suffers from constant disconnects and issues with both radios on at the same time. My question is to those of you that have the new AEBS with this capability and are actually using the dual network option. Have you had any problems with the new Apple unit? Any disconnects or other signs of flakiness?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a "My book Pro" 250 GB external hard drive spinning at 7200 rpm. This thing is dog slow. It takes about 5 to 10 seconds to copy about 2 megabytes. I have another drive that copies about 160 megabytes in about 5 seconds. I called Western Digital (the maker of the "My Book Pro") and they said that USB 2.0 transfer rates are about 2 MB a second! That is not true but he insisted. My question to you all is how can i win this argument with them? Do you know a formula that would give me real world numbers. In other words how to translate 480 megabits (the USB 2.0 transfer spec) into megabytes? Ive searched the net and cant find anything. Its messed up cause both drives have basically the same specs. Ive even tried reformatting to every possibility, ive switched cables from the fast drive to the slow drive. Nothings working. Im gonna call WD back tomorrow but i wanted a way to talk about what could honestly be expected from USB 2.0. I just cant believe that USB 2.0 tops out at 2MB a second. And to top it all off, todays call ended up with me getting disconnected so i called back and guess what, they were closed...that guys a DOUCHE. I really cant put my faith into Western Digital after this. Are there drives that are geared more towards professionals seeking performance and reliability?

I really hope Starcraft 2 isn't too graphic intensive and that the 256 would be enough to handle it. That's really the only game I plan on buying to play on here.
I am doing a presentation for a class thingy in technology about new media and i'm trying to express how when macintosh youtubers started uploading video blogs when they switched to intel/intel made iMacs and about this media blah blah blah. In the pic attached is that a iMac G5 or intel. I see spot light on the top right so it's either running tiger or leopard. I thought I saw a apple remote magnetic thingy on the side. Did the iMac g5 have one?

Then suddenly last night, I can only send mail using the app. I called Comcast to see if they had a mail server down and they told me it was a problem with my e mail client since I could send and receiving using the Comcast webmail. I don't get it. I didn't change any of my settings and I can send and receive just fine using my iPhone.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI did some searching and the posts I found were a few years old so i figured I would ask again for a more rescent answer.I am currently looking to buy a new laptop to replace my junk of a laptop (Dell Mini 10v) that I bought a few years back just to take notes during classes. These days I am looking for something capable of more then just web, email, etc. I am looking to do some programming, video editting and a game once in a while. As nice as they are, I do not need the retina display, so I was considering the 15" priced at $1,799. My questions are as follows.
1: Is it worth it upgrading to the 8gb of ram (was probably going to anyway)?
2: Does the 1680x1050 Hi-Rez screen make much of a difference?
3: As I would most likely be paying either completely with cash or a combination of cash and my Visa (depending how my medical bills are this month), can I get these customizations either directly from the Apple store, or sent to the Apple store from the website so I can pay at the store instead of online. I am really not up for applying for their BarclayCard, although If that is my only option I might just go that route.

Could any 27" iMac owners post their framerates for WoW here so we can get a feel for how the systems compare to the 24" iMac.
test and report back the following:
1. Processor, GPU, Vram
2. Videosettings used
3. Framerates (ctrl-r) at native resolution in the following locations:
a) Dalaran
b) Stormwind or Ogrimaar
c) 25 man raid
Just need to know if it will recognize all my windows based jpegs etc on windows formatted drive. If not, it has the ability to daisy chain a USB drive onto. If I plugged in a Mac formatted hard drive as a daisy chained hdd would it see this one?
View 5 Replies View RelatedIm going to throw out a scenario and see if anyone sees flaw in my logic.I first will mention that I will stick with console gaming and wont play games on the imac, although I thought in 07 there was a youtube video of someone playing crysis on a 2600GT imac (im not sure what the real graphics card was or if thats even a real one). I will be editing photos using aperture or some other photo editor, running Vuze nonstop, 12 tab browsing, and also probably watching a movie. My G5 ALS imac did that with about 3 tab browsing pretty easy. Also it wasnt editing photos. ANYWAYS. Amazon has the i5 for 1972.98 and applecare for 135.99 for a total of 2108.97
View 24 Replies View RelatedJust got a WD My Book World Edition II 2TB. I would like to reformat this drive specifically for mac. It's sole purpose is to be used with Time Machine.
I currently have the drive connected to my IMAC via ethernet. Finder shows the external HD listed under Shared as MyBookWorld and another one as MyBookWorld-Backup. Time Machine preferences/select disk shows this drive as "WD_Backup on MyBookWorld-Backup".
Using DiskUtility.app the drive DOES NOT show up!
Should I send this drive back from where I ordered? Anyone have any experience with this drive? Should I even bother to reformat?
I have NOT installed the software that came with the drive? Why should I?
I play PC games and I LOVE mac os.... I have a macbook pro right now which I am selling. The reason I ask about Kanex is because if the new iMacs dont come with a great graphics card, I am thinking of buying the lower end imac and connecting my pc to it for the gaming aspect and using the imac for everything else I do.. "Logic, photoshop bla bla" I just dont want to be stuck at 720p and I cant find any real confirmation if I output my radeon 4870 with HDMI if I can choose a crazy res the imac screen support over the Kanex adapter. I am hoping to god the new iMacs come with a 58XX series card but ya know how that goes.. All I play is Team Fort 2 which should be out for mac soon.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was using my mac the other day and the screen went to static real quick then gave some code to shut down. SO I did HUGE mistake I am guessing. I have only 1 user with a password. When I enter my user password it goes to a blue screen for a minute then comes back and ask for my password again. Before I crashed it was asking for permission to use fonts from my external hard drive ??? not sure why.But I figured I would just reinstall my os x and be ok... not really worried about my info on the computer everything is backed up. However when i restarted and held down the c key while it started with the os disc inserted... I came back 9 hours later and it was still the white screen with the spinning sun thingie.... like it was still loading

One thing I'm wondering is if the 140 price bump to the i7 is worth it? What are the diffferences between the 2 processors speed wise?
