OS X :: Not Recognize Western Digital 1tb Mybook Home

Jan 1, 2010

i have a macbook pro running snow leopard. i have a western digital 1tb my book home edition. i have used it many times and had no problems. i have not used it in the last two weeks and when i tried to plug it in today, it looked okay at the beginning, lights were blinking and the drive was spinning but it didn't mount. it wasn't recognized and so i unplugged to try again. now...when it is plugged in to the wall, the light blinks about once per second but the drive doesn't turn on or spin. when i plug it via firewire into my computer the light turns off and the drive continues to stay off. as far as I know, the drive was not dropped or damaged or removed improperly (with the possible exception of what I just did). because it is not on, it will not show up in disk utility either.

Windows On Mac :: 1TB MyBook Disk Doesn't Work Via Firewire

May 13, 2010

I have a 1TB MyBook from Western Digital. When I connect it via Firewire 800 to my MBP in Windows 7 (Bootcamp) it is recognised but when I start copying (read or write) it just hangs after a while or becomes very slow. If I connect it via USB it works. Do I need some drivers ? If yes, where can I found them? I found this on WD but I have the previous generation i.e. without the digital screen. If I go to the software download, it says that the drivers won't work with the previous gen.

I had a Windows based PC a couple of years ago that had crashed. So recently i tried to put the files from my old hard drive from my Windows computer to my Mac. In order to keep track of what i have copied and what I haven't i thought it would be good to delete the stuff of my windows hard drive once it was copied. However, it doesn't let me delete anything of the Windows drive since it is set to read only. Is there a way around this? i've tried everything i can think of, but haven't found a soluti

If I right click in the storage drive and select New Folder it says Destination Access Denied, and has the buttons Continue / Skip / Cancel. When I click Continue, it shows the same dialog but it says You need permission to perform this action and the buttons Try Again or Cancel, I've repeatedly clicked Try Again and it does nothing.

Just wondered if there are any others out there like me, a Mac user and lover in a windows world. all the computers at work are windows, so if I use pages or keynote I cant share with colleagues, i cant print easy from the network, I cant sync my calenders etc. I guess that Macs are used more in other countries but every time I get my Macbook out at a meeting I get funny looks (I don't work in a creative industry) I love my Macbook but it gets frustrating trying to convert documents or having to use office for mac just so I can send the document to colleagues.

Windows On Mac :: Windows Sharing Formatted Drive

Jan 16, 2009

I have a PC, and a macbook. I also have an external harddrive, formatted for mac. What I would like to do is plug the external hard drive into the PC, and share it over the network so that I can access it wirelessly from my macbook. The problem is that windows does not recognise the drive, so I cannot share it. Any mac-drive-formatted reading programs only read the drive from within the program, so I still can't share it.

OS X :: Western Digital My Book World Edition II Connected To IMAC?

Mar 19, 2010

Just got a WD My Book World Edition II 2TB. I would like to reformat this drive specifically for mac. It's sole purpose is to be used with Time Machine.

I currently have the drive connected to my IMAC via ethernet. Finder shows the external HD listed under Shared as MyBookWorld and another one as MyBookWorld-Backup. Time Machine preferences/select disk shows this drive as "WD_Backup on MyBookWorld-Backup".

Using DiskUtility.app the drive DOES NOT show up!

Should I send this drive back from where I ordered? Anyone have any experience with this drive? Should I even bother to reformat?

I have NOT installed the software that came with the drive? Why should I?

MacBook :: Transferring Files From Hard Drive Formatted For Windows To Mac

Jul 6, 2010

I figured it was the motherboard and that is way too costly to replace. So I just bought a Macbook and I'm waiting for it to arrive. I'm pretty sure that the hard drive on my pavillion is still ok, so what I've purchased a hard drive enclosure and plan to use that as an external hard drive as well as transfer my files to my new macbook. My question is whether I would be able to transfer my files from my PC hard drive to the macbook directly without formatting the hard drive because that will erase all my files.

OS X :: PC Formatted HD Shown Empty In IMac

Jun 8, 2010

I have a PC (yes I am sorry about that) with a 750Gb external hard drive which I use on my computer. The hard drive is full of my pc's data (pc is running windows xp). I just bought a new imac and plugged the hard drive into it. A message popped up saying something like, make the drive mac compatible, I said ok. But I think this has changed the hard drive header from PC style NTFS to mac. I do not think the data was wiped as this happened in like one minute. But now I cannot recover my PC data files and have a huge amount of work on there. So how can I recover my data? Should I try a program like Diskwarrior on the Mac, or use a PC based program to try and recover the files?

I could not see the external drive original when I plugged itback into the pc, so I installed Mac drive and could then see it. But it shows it as empty. We can see the drive now in windows explorer, and also in Manage/storage/disk management it shows the drive as disk 1 as healthy but with file system now listed as HFSJ. Does this mean HFS file system and its drive J? We are running a program called EASUS Data Recovery Wizard. It is scanning the drive and has so far found 1039107 files and a NTFS file record of 1021854. The program has only been running 6 mins. So will probably let it run and see. On the status bar it has just highlighted like 1% so I guess this may take a few days to complete.

MacBook Pro :: Transfer Files Off An External Hard Drive Formatted For Windows?

Feb 2, 2012

I just bought my first mac (yay!) and am trying to transfer my files off of my old pc.  The problem is that I stored all my personal files on an external hard drive, which is of course formatted for windows.  My mac will open it, but it is "read only."  I tried plugging it back into my pc and using the Migration Assistant to transfer my files over, but it was not detected (rest of the pc was).

However, the second time I tried plugging it in to my pc, it told me it would need to be formatted first. Obviously my mac has changed something on it, and now all my personal files are on a hard drive that is unusable by either my old pc or my new mac!
