...things like video editing and photoshop? It seems the 9400 is a very capable performer on its own, no? I assume it also runs cooler. Outside of gaming, is there much reason for people to consider the dedicated GPU options out there?
View 12 Repliesfirst time posting. Got a mac mini from March 09, got snow leopard on it and been running football manager 2011 on it without too many problems. However running the game on high graphic settings produces a lag/choppy gameplay, only playing it on medium gives smooth gameplay. But i've experienced poorer graphic capability installing games like EMpire at War in OS, but not in windows with bootcamp where the games can be played on the highest graphic settings without problems. Any reason for this? To try and sort it i thought i'd try and update my Nvidia drivers on the mac side of things, in the about mac pop up it says my card is a GeForce 9400 so when i try and install a driver from Nvidia with GeForce 9400m it wont install saying i dont have the hardware to support the drivers. But i cant find any info online to suggest there is two Nvidia cards with just an m difference? Even on wikipedia?

In the pic attached is that a iMac G5 or intel. I see spot light on the top right so it's either running tiger or leopard. I thought I saw a apple remote magnetic thingy on the side. Did the iMac g5 have one?

I decided to just get 4GB of RAM for now, but im having second thoughts about it. Would having 8GB of RAM make any difference when playing high-end games like Modern Warfare 2 and Starcraft 2 ?

Why the difference in the stats from Apple and the 3Dmark06? Does the 256 vs 512 graphics memory really matter much? I play mainly WoW and iRacing, but may move to newer MMRPGs, and don't want to spend the extra $300 if it's worthless.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am very new to the entire Apple/Mac world (except for an iPhone) and it's time to get a new desktop, and I will be switching from the PC world. That being said, I have followed the various posts related to some of the technical issues there have been with the new generation of iMac's. I will be doing some limited game play, as well as limited photo editing, and some movie editing/making (expecting a baby boy in late May).
I am seriously looking at a couple of new 24" iMacs from an online vendor and there is a $100 difference in the 2.93 with the 640G hd and the GT120 and the 3.06 with 1TB and GT130. Would either of these be a good choice, or is there likely to be an upgrade to the processors in the near future to the current line of iMacs, possibly resulting in a price drop? Again I am new to the Apple way of doing things, so I'm not looking for a difinitive answer to the upgrade question, just an opinion based on your experiences.
I am trying to find similar comparisons. The refurb with 8800 is only 1599... which even to me looks like a great deal. Yet I am trying to find the two comparisons that work.
Searching is yielding lots of trash so I am probably too stupid to use that feature
I figure on popping in 4gb of RAM and being done with it, since I am only spending 1600 I look at it this way, if a real upgrade comes out in August I won't be out much if anything.
Does anyone know if the current batch of iMacs with the GT120 or GT130 have the GPU soldered onto the motherboard?

Then suddenly last night, I can only send mail using the app. I called Comcast to see if they had a mail server down and they told me it was a problem with my e mail client since I could send and receiving using the Comcast webmail. I don't get it. I didn't change any of my settings and I can send and receive just fine using my iPhone.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI did some searching and the posts I found were a few years old so i figured I would ask again for a more rescent answer.I am currently looking to buy a new laptop to replace my junk of a laptop (Dell Mini 10v) that I bought a few years back just to take notes during classes. These days I am looking for something capable of more then just web, email, etc. I am looking to do some programming, video editting and a game once in a while. As nice as they are, I do not need the retina display, so I was considering the 15" priced at $1,799. My questions are as follows.
1: Is it worth it upgrading to the 8gb of ram (was probably going to anyway)?
2: Does the 1680x1050 Hi-Rez screen make much of a difference?
3: As I would most likely be paying either completely with cash or a combination of cash and my Visa (depending how my medical bills are this month), can I get these customizations either directly from the Apple store, or sent to the Apple store from the website so I can pay at the store instead of online. I am really not up for applying for their BarclayCard, although If that is my only option I might just go that route.

Two short questions on which I really need an answer. This academic year, I'll be writing a lot of papers, but most specifically, I am forced to use SPSS (statistical software package for social sciences).
Will I really need the 2.93 over the 2.66 and notice the improvement?
Same goes for the gfx. I like full-hd 1080, I'll be in InDesign, and use Logic Pro. Will I need "slash" notice the 4850 over the gt130?
Also, are the "hang-ups" with the 4850 truly fixed and does it indeed run a lot hotter (inc. really that more noise) than the gt130?
I currently have a early macbook 2008, 2.1GHz, 1GB ram. and im wondering if the base imac is A LOT quicker?
