I just have a quick question. I'm ordering a Macbook Pro this weekend and saw that one had a little beefier 512 MB of RAM instead of 256 dedicated for the graphics card.
I really hope Starcraft 2 isn't too graphic intensive and that the 256 would be enough to handle it. That's really the only game I plan on buying to play on here.
Just wondering if it's worth getting a machine with 8Gb of RAM over the standard 4Gb for things like video editing, aperture etc. Can most of today's apps even use 8 gigs of memory? I assume the biggest advantage would be for running a virtual windows machine within OSX and things like that.

Love the new trackpads on the MBP, not sure how I'll like the glossy screen. Would be doing some video work down the road (Canon HV40). Please tell me the difference between the performance of these graphics cards and lastly which one you would opt for.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently had the 2.8Ghz 24inch imac with 2Gb memore and 320Gb hard drive with the ati graphics but had a display problem so returned it but my current pc is so slow i need a new computer now so i'm looking at the 24inch 2.66Ghz model but what sped difference will i see in sped from 2.8-2.66 and will the nvidia graphics be better, worse or the same as the recent ATI graphics and is the memore a bigger improvement with now 4Gb ddr3
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm going to eventually buy a reburb white Macbook and I am contemplating between the 2.1GHz and the 2.4. As far as the ram and hdd are concerned, I plan on putting a bigger drive in and upping the ram to 4gb, so the only difference left is the .3Ghz.
The money saved by going with a 2.1 would just about cover the 4gb and a good 320GB HDD.
My plans for this laptop are: surfing, some work in Windows (thus the ram), itunes, iweb, iphoto... no gaming planned, I'm just not a gamer.
I understand that some of the early core 2 duo's are different than the current core 2 duo's being used in the current 13" MBP's. I understand that some are T8000 series or T9000 series (I think??).
My question really is what is the difference between the earleir C2D's used and the current ones. Some of the earlier ones seem to have more L2 cache, do the newer ones run on a lower voltage? Have a different chip? Are quicker/slower?
Would there be any problems cloning the SSD of a 13" MacBook Pro over to the SSD of an 11" MacBook Air?
The SSD is a 240GB OWC (only 80GB used) and I'm getting the 128GB MBA.
Are there issues cloning and transferring between different systems?
So I still haven't decided on which air I want yet.
If I go for the 11.6in, is the upgrade from 1.4GHz to 1.6GHz worth $100?

I really can't think of much more than that for the Air. I love OS X and thats why I haven't bought either. Mind you this is ignoring that Apple may release an update soon for the MBA cause if they do then I have my answer. But if they don't I don't know which I want! I love aluminum, but I am not a fan of the rounded corners apple put on the MBA.

One thing that concerned me was having higher CPU temps with the lid closed.
I read a thread a few days ago that said there is no CPU temp change between lid closed and lid opened. And after doing some of my own testing I now believe that information is FALSE.
I use smcFanControl to control fan speed and monitor CPU temp.
Before using smcFantControl to boost my fan speed to constantly run at 3,400RPM, my CPU temp was 10-20 degrees (celsius) higher, on average.
I have a first gen unibody mBP (2.53 GHz) with 9600 M GT graphics card.
My wife is buying a lenovo w500 laptop with ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 graphics card.
I'm looking at second hand 2009 quad mac pros. I'm not sure if 2.66 has a massive disadvantage over the 2.93. The thing is, I'm buying this for quite a long run (I work with audio/ Logic pro). I'm thinking that the 2.93 will be more future proof? Does anyone have any experience with the two?

I have the 2.4 core i5 15" MBP with HR Glossy display, just got it on Monday, installed an owc ssd, and 8 gb of ram and i LOVE IT. The only issue is when the graphics card switches from the nVidia back to the Intel graphics, the screen briefly blanks out or "blinks" for a split second and the Intel graphics comes back on. It doesn't blink when it goes from intel to nvidia, only from nvidia back to intel.
I currently own a Mac Pro 2,8GHz 8-core (2008, 3,1) with the following specs;

4GB RAM
Modded 4890 Graphics
Apple GT120 Graphics
X25-M G2 80GB SSD
I'm still using Firefox 2 point something. I just downloaded version 3 last night but have yet to install it.
Are there any web browser experts out there, who have formed any opinions about the new browser yet ?
I am seriously considering a Mac Pro but I am stuck if I want a single or dual processor. Ill barely do video editing, Ill run fusion, photo stuff, etc...

Has anyone been able to notice a discernible improvement with Lossless? If so, what type of music/speakers were you using?

Apple states that the new 2009 RAID card "Requires Mac Pro (early 2009) and Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later." Why? Is there any reason it won't work in an older Mac Pro (2007)? Aside from the increase in cache size (256MB-->512MB) what is the difference?

View 5 Replies View Relatedi have a 1.5 Mbps AT&T DSL connection, and multiple speed tests show a download speed of 1.2 Mbps (and 200 Kbps upload). when i download files, such as software updates from Apple, various podcasts, and even Silverlight from Microshaft, the speed is always between 140 - 160 Kbps. i contacted AT&T, and the rep said it was because of buffering by the servers i was receiving the files from.

I use boot camp once in a while to run Vista 64-bit just for playing the Total War series of games, specifically Medieval 2 and now Empire. Any advice on best graphics card setup for those particular games under bootcamp? I'm not at all worried about on the OS X side of things as I don't really do anything graphic intensive there. I saw the new Nvidia GTX 285 is coming out soon. Any thoughts on that vs the Radeon 4870s? I'm currently running dual Radeon 3870s with crossfire but because I'm on a 1st Gen Mac Pro I can't get everything out of them so I think I may want to upgrade to a new Mac Pro.

I'm in a bit of trouble at work. One of our Mac Pro's won't display anything. It starts up as it should be the screen stays black. We've tried with several monitors. A Mac Partner was 99% sure it was the graphics card which was the problem.
So now I'm thinking about just finding a new graphics card and replace it myself, but I have a few questions.
The original card was a ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT (256mb) and I've tried to find some suppliers for this, but it seems its not that easy to get your hands on so i was hoping that we could upgrade it to a newer one instead. But I need to know which ones will actually work with this model and if they need to be a specific version of model to work with the Mac Pro.
I have a few questions regarding Radeon HD 5870 versus the 5770...
1. Does CS5 (especially photoshop) make much use of graphics cards in general, and will the 5870 make a big difference in speed over the 5770?
2. Is the 5870 going to make things louder? (i have a G5 now and it's like a jet engine, so I'm hoping for a quieter machine)
3. Will the 5870 use a lot more power than the 5770?
So, its now the 3870 vs. the 8800. As someone who plays games on the Windows and uses iLife '08 on the Mac side (not many games though), which card is looking better?
