PowerPC :: Desktop G4 Or G5 Options?

May 13, 2008

I have a PowerMac G4, dual 1.25, 2 gigs of RAM and I'm thinking about upgrading. I don't have a big budget so the new Mac Pro is out of the question. I've been trying to figure out what's going to be more beneficial for me: 1) I upgrade the processor on my G4 to the maximum of dual 1.8 or 2) get an iMac, maybe the lowest version of 2.4Ghz Intel core duo.I'm an audio engineer and my projects require a lot of audio recording, mixing, and mastering. Once in a blue moon I have to work audio synced up to video. That was the reason I HAD to get a PowerMac 4 years ago and not the old version of the iMac. All my software work perfectly with OS 10.3.9 so it's not a requirement for me to get a better operating system. In fact, one application is still not available for OS 10.5.

If I pull the LCD screen forward as if I am going to close the screen, the light turns off as I am pulling the screen forward. As soon as I stop the motion, the power light goes back on. PowerPC :: Fix IBook G3 Logic Board Options

Jul 11, 2007

my G3 iBook's logic board has died (it was in that series that had the logic board problem). I had it replaced once already when it was under warrenty. However, the second one has died and Apple will not touch it (unless I pay something like $350 for Apple to fix it). Well, I decided to take matters into my own hands and I ripped open my iBook piece by piece. Now that I have the logic board in front of me, what can I do to fix it? Can I sodder something? Should I take it out and buy a new one off ebay?

PowerPC :: G4 Hard Drive Options In A System?

my aunt recently bought a Macbook because her 9 year old iMac g4's hard drive finally wore out. She is now giving it to me, which i plan to fix. The only problem is that she threw out the restore discs thinking she was just going to recycle the computer. I searched ebay and couldn't find any restore discs for iMac g4 for sale. There are powermac g4 discs, but I doubt that will work the same. So here is my problem. Do I wait for a set of restore discs to surface on ebay, or are there other means of restoring it.

PowerPC :: G4 Upgrade Options - Decent Vide Cards?

Feb 20, 2007

I know the G4s are 733mhz and below, I'm not sure if they're Quicksilvers or DAs, I could probably find out, but I already bugged an IT guy once, so I'm not sure I want to ask again.Now, assuming these are at a decent price (from what I've heard, they usually are), is it worth it to buy one and upgrade? I've been reading over lowendmac.com, and I see both of the 733mhz models will accept dual 1.8 cards/boards. This probably won't be my primary machine, but my Photoshop machine until I get a Mac Pro.How much are the 733mhz machines worth, they probably have 1gb or so of ram, and a decent(for the time) vide card. The school doesn't really skimp, in our photo department, we have G5s w/dual 2ghz, 4gb RAM, and 23" ACDs.

PowerPC :: Powerbook G4 Logic Board Options - PB G4 1.67ghz

May 3, 2008

Hoping that some of you here still own or have owned Powerbooks recently... I have a PB G4 1.67ghz that I bought in July 2005. Since then, it's seen the back of the Apple Store several times to replace three logic boards, a screen, and a SuperDrive, with the most recent instance being the third logic board replacement. This has left the future of my laptop in uncertainty, as the warranty expires this July. In the past, I've owned several Macs for 5 years or more, including my beloved G4 Cube, so I'm no stranger to sticking with my Mac until it's absolutely necessary to upgrade... and financially, I was planning for this computer to last me another 2 years before I had to upgrade.

PowerPC :: Powerbook With Bluetooth Mighty Mouse Options?

Aug 3, 2008

I have a 12" PowerBook G4 (the very last revision in 2006) and I've never had issues with the bluetooth before (although I've only ever used it to move a few pictures from my phone to my laptop occasionally). This week, I bought a wireless mighty mouse and connected it no problem. Yesterday was the first day I used it and it worked like a champ all day. Today, I was using it and in the middle of moving it around, it just stopped responding. My trackpad still works fine, but the cursor stops moving with the mouse, the clicker doesn't work, etc. When I turn the mouse off for a minute and then turn it back on, it works for a few minutes and then quits again. The first thing I tried was to swap batteries, but that didn't help. Neither did a restart.

PowerPC :: IBook G3 With Logic Board Options In My System

Dec 17, 2009

last week I started to get scrambled video on my iBook G3 (2002 vintage) running 10.2.8. I got it to start up correctly before freezing twice in the last week, but it appears to have given up completely today. I'm not as concerned about this as I would have been a few years ago, since I have a lot of experience with similar problems. Apple replaced the logic board under AppleCare in 2003 and again in 2004, and this is part of the series of iBooks that Apple was fixing for free for a while as part of a class-action settlement. Apple doesn't appear to be doing that anymore (that's fine, the computer is Old with a capital O and it's not feasible to continue supporting the product), and I assume that this has effectively totaled the computer

PowerPC :: Powerbook G4 17" Latch Options And Sound Quality

Dec 19, 2006

I bought a Powerbook G4 17" 1ghz off of ebay, knowing it has latch issues (not catching). I was wondering if there was some way I could fix the latch myself that was not invasive (dont have to remove the bezel), or if there was a way apple would repair it for free since it wasnt from a drop(says prev. owner). IF there isnt, I was wondering if a magnetic strip applied to the case and bezel would keep it closed, or harm the internals...? Would velcro adhesives work? I would rather not use a wrap-around solution to clasp it shut

About the Powerbook G4 17" sound quality. It sounds almost the same as my Powerbook G4 15" 867mhz did, isnt it supposed to be a little louder than that? Could anyone describe their experiences with the PBg4 17" an sound volume?

PowerPC :: PowerBook HD Or Logic Board Options - Rotating Loading Icon?

I have a 17" PB, 1.33 ghz with 1.76gb ram. In September it gave signs of the hard drive failing. It would crash right after booting and then not boot at all.If I booted into target disk mode i could still access the files. I backed everything up and did many versions of trying to reformat / reinstall my OS to no avail. When Leopard came out I went through the process again to see if that might help but it didn't. Today I replaced the HD and now it still won't boot at all. It goes to the grey apple screen with the rotating loading icon and stalls. I've let it sit there for 10 minutes or more.

PowerPC :: Any Possibility To Delete Extra Drives On G4 Desktop?

May 22, 2007

I've just bought a second mac - little cheapie to use as a second machine. The guy had it set up with three drives showing on the desktop: OSX, CLASSIC and FILES. I don't need OS9/Classic, or the FILES folder, so I threw them in the trash & emptied it. However, it's showing that I only have 4gig of space on the hard drive. I went into system prefs/disc utility, and it's still showing the drives I deleted - although greyed out. Its seems to still be allocating them 5.9gb each of space. In the column on the left in disc utility, it shows the following drive icons:

19.1 GB MAXTOR 92049U3
OSX
CLASSIC
FILES
I tried deleting them through utility, but I must have done something wrong, as they just popped up on my desktop again. Looks like I need to remove partitions.

PowerPC :: Would I Be Nuts To Switch From A Newer Desktop PC To My Old IBook G4

Oct 27, 2007

I had bought an iBook G4 back in July of 2005 and that ended up being my main machine for about a year. I had to switch back to Windows since so much software that I needed only ran on Windows and it just made more sense. Just this past February I replaced that machine since it was having some serious issues and wasn't worth the time or money to troubleshoot. The machine I have now has an Athlon64 x2 4200+, 1GB RAM, a 320GB hard disk, the standard DVD writer, and I installed a GeForce 7600GT 256MB video card in it. The iBook has a 1.2GHz G4, 1.25GB RAM, a 60GB hard disk, and a combo drive. I have a 160GB external hard disk and a DVD writer to hook up to it.
