PowerPC :: Reverting Back To One Partition From 3 - No Options To Apply
Jan 11, 2011
I have a G5 with 10.4.11. There is 3 partitioned drives that I want gone and set back to the original 1 drive. I just cant seem to figure out what I am doing wrong. I don't need anything on the Mac as I have already backed up all info I wanted saved. When I go into the disk utilities/partitions/volume scheme it shows 3 drives. When I switch the volume scheme to 1 partition their are no options to "apply" for me to revert to 1 partition only.

I would like to uninstall windows from my i-Mac and revert back to a single partition hardrive. Unfortunately I installed Windows about three years ago (never to use it really) and now when I go to uninstall in Mac OS X it says my Boot Camp beta has expired.

I know that I can right-click (er, two-finger click) when I'm in a folder and set things like "Arrange By" / "Sort By" / "Icon Size" and then click "Use as Defaults," but it seems to only apply these to the new folders I create after I apply these settings (if they're applied at all, I'm having trouble figuring out what "Use as Defaults" even accomplishes.)
But I've already moved a ton of folders over from my old laptop, and they've got some seriously wonky view settings. There would be 3-4 folders right on top of one another, and then the folder I'm looking for is in no-mans-land 600 pixels to the right. It's a mess
I want every folder on my computer ever and forever to snap to grid, arrange by kind, and "float" to the top left (no gaps between files - fill'er'up!). How can I do this without going into every single folder and changing the settings individually?
(On another related note, is it possible to force folder contents to fit the window size? I dont want to have to scroll horizontally to see a folder's contents when I resize it.)

I am using Windows Vista less and less on my MacBook and the partition takes up about 1/2 of the hard disk space. I tried using Disk Utility but I guess I don't know what I am doing. I choose the Partition button. In the Volume Scheme, I choose the partition that has Windows on it. In the Volume Information text box, I tried to enter a smaller size but the Apply button is grayed out. So, how do I reduce the size of the partition that Windows is installed on? I guess I am not quite brave enough to completely delete Windows from the machine. I "might" need it occasionally. Windows is being used by BootCamp.

Lately I've been messing around with changing a lot of the standard Mac OS X icons like the "Macintosh HD", "iPod", and "Downloads" icons. If, for some reason, I decide to revert back to the original icons.

Like many here I am a reasonably 'savvy' user but have got very grey over the past week or so. I run an aged and trusted G4 and took a number of decisions recently - to add a second HD, to upgrade to Leopard from Tiger, to upgrade to the 2008 Mac Office and to install CS4 (all legal).
I am getting major problems with the machine hanging up and believe that it is to do with Leopard and CS4 (the latter of which I wish to remove). So, the nub of my question is whether I can revert the machine to Tiger and if so, how!

My iMac is fairly old. It's one of the white ones that has the isight and mic. I don't remember the generation. For basic typing and internet needs it's still runs great! However since I updated to snow leopard I've found alot of my software isn't compatible, thus I want to revert to tiger. Atleast with Tiger my software works.

Created a slide show, Then a request for Black and white,  No problem.  Now I need to take the slide show back to colour, And the only way i can find is to go back to original un doing all the work I done in raw format. I saved everything in k peg. But the works had gone in the raw files, We need a way to step back after the presses on raw. From black and white back to colour, without having to revert to originals.

Apple, you broked it AGAIN!! You're getting tired of hearing this but Fix The ********** Finder!!!
When I set a view option and then click "Use as default" it doesn't apply to all the folders throughout the system. This worked every time in Leopard like Billy D. Williams' Colt .45, and now? BROKED!
Come on Apple! You do a great job at making things work, such so that we have to bring ourselves to THIS! Batching about so little an issue as not applying my pretty background color to all my windows! If you're going to break something at least break something worth fixing!
Anybody heard of a fix for this?

I had my hard drive partitioned into 2, where one was mac the other windows xp. I received this macbook as a gift from my sister so i wanted to reformat everything into mac. I popped in the Mac OS x install cd and just installed it. Now there is two hard drives and I am not able to re-partition it where i can bring it back to one again...I was suppose to delete windows first before re-formating my macbook.

Bought a used 4 TB Seagate drive, formatted it , checked the speed 150 MB/s read/write and made a partition. Apparently it worked perfect.Â
However after this first partition the drive is behaving erratically. I can not modify partitions anymore nor delete them. Repair disk is not finding any problem either from the system or from the recovery partition.Â
I am starting to believe the disk is damaged. Beside the partition problem the disk is behaving fine.

I have just finished a seven month fiasco working with a refurbished 3.4 GHz i7 mid-2011 iMac, with the Radeon 6970 graphics card. I had originally purchased it to replace an early quad core 2008 Mac Pro. I had the iMac hot-rodded by the OWC folks to include a Mercury 480 GB SSD and eSATA port. That story involves multiple issues with failed components and a complete inability to install bootcamp, which was needed for work-related software that did not play well in a virtualized environment. So now, with the latest iMac hardware failure (Fire Wire port), I have thrown in the towel and will be going back to Mac Pro. (Takes deep breath.)The iMac is currently being used for work, my second job as a part time pro photographer (Photoshop, Aperture), some videography and transcoding and occasional gaming.I'm looking to hit performance marks for processing and video similar to the i7 and am willing to consider refurb or pre-owned machines. New 8 core Nehalem and 6 core Westmere machines are outside my budget. Definite upgrades I intend to add are:
a. 512 GB SSD as primary drive for OS X
b.256 GB SSD for my Bootcamp installation
c.12GB RAM
d. 2 Seagate Momentus XT 750 GB drives in RAID 0 configuration
So, my questions are
1.For real world performance, particularly with regards to my photography work and video, what core processor combinations (going back to 2008 or 2009 used machines could be considered) are likely to yield EFFECTIVE processing power close to the iMac i7? Among recent vintage machines, it seems that a quad core 2.8 GHz would be reasonably close, but I find it's difficult to translate Geekbench results into my needs.
2.I'm having a real hard time with my video card options. It seems that potential choices include the 5770, 5870 and 6970 cards.I'm not overly concerned about the price differences, but would like to find the best performance/value combination, given my needs.

I finally purchased my dream laptop a month ago and it has been great so far until I ran into this strange issue. It seems when the backlight it set to below 50% and either my hands are on the side/bottom or I'm slightly moving or tilting the laptop the backlight goes into this weird super-bright state for a few seconds. When this happenes there are even brighter circle shapes near the dock area. Problem is this only happens sometimes and I cant seem to replicate it with a certain action. I'm not sure what will happen when I take it into the store. If anyone can shed any light onto similar problem

I am going to partition a 160 gig hard drive to use as 1. a dedicated os back-up, i.e. no videos or pictures or anything needless, and 2. storage for some media items. How big should the partition for the os back-up area be and still allow for some expansion as the os gets larger?

I converted a 500G External USB SATA hard drive from MBR to GPT no problem. It could be done using either Vista 32bit or WinXP 64bit the conversion under XP Pro SP3 32bit was not possible maybe because diskpart was still an older version and not updated to a newer version. My work on the Mac is done now and I want to convert my drive back to MBR so I can use it with windows. I've erased and then deleted all the partitions I had created on the drive. Using WinXP 32bit and Disk Management I see only one big partition (465.76 GB Healthy (GPT Protective Partition)) Using WinXP 64bit and Disk Management I can see there is a 200Mb EFI Systems Partition followed by 464.44 Gb of Unallocated space. How do I get rid of this EFI Systems Partition that is stopping me when using diskpart to convert to MBR?
My sister bought a second hand Mac Book Pro. According to Mac Book Pro specs. this unit should have had a 250G - 320G Hard Drive but someone had replaced with a 120G before she got her hands on it. My assumption then is that theywhoever it was that switched the drive must have also replaced the DVD drive at the same time as well........................

I partitioned my hard drive to install windows. I rebooted, loaded up the windows disc. And then realized my disc only had one partition. I quit the windows installer without installing windows, went into boot mode and I can only see my bootcamp partition. Is there any way to get my osx partition back?

I'm a bit unsure as to the best way to tackle this. I have a single partition on my Leopard install with that partition map scheme being a "Master Boot Record" as apposed to a GUID Partition Table (GPT). Not sure why it is not a GPT but I appear to have formatted it incorrectly when I installed it (as a replacement drive / upgrade of the original). In any case, I now need to change this partition system back to a GPT so that it will allow me to run firmware updates as EFI upgrades are dependent on a GPT partition.
My question is more or less what is the best way to accomplish this given it's going to require a reformatting of all my data in any case. I have it all backed up to a Time Machine backup on a Time Capsule but to reformat the drive would then mean I have to re-install the Tiger install, followed by the Leopard upgrade disks, followed finally by the restore from Time Machine.
Is there an easier way to clone the data perhaps, such as with a Carbon Copy Cloner disk to disk clone? Or would that "restore" then merely include the actual partition format back to Master Boot Record as part of the clone? (I suspect the clone includes the partition type). Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Are there any other options?

I have a PowerMac G4, dual 1.25, 2 gigs of RAM and I'm thinking about upgrading. I don't have a big budget so the new Mac Pro is out of the question. I've been trying to figure out what's going to be more beneficial for me: 1) I upgrade the processor on my G4 to the maximum of dual 1.8 or 2) get an iMac, maybe the lowest version of 2.4Ghz Intel core duo.I'm an audio engineer and my projects require a lot of audio recording, mixing, and mastering. Once in a blue moon I have to work audio synced up to video. That was the reason I HAD to get a PowerMac 4 years ago and not the old version of the iMac. All my software work perfectly with OS 10.3.9 so it's not a requirement for me to get a better operating system. In fact, one application is still not available for OS 10.5.

I really need to free up space on the windows partition of my Mac so that I can install certain software I need in order to complete a project due really soon. What would be the best way to accomplish this (I'd rather not increase the partition w/ a third party app)? I was thinking the best is to eliminate unnecessary files that I am pretty certain were installed as part of the Vista install so that I can recover as much HDD space on the windows partition as possible, but don't know what I can eliminate safely? Can someone please offer some ideas and very basic steps of where to find any of the items you reference?

I upgraded to Yosemite, but I kept my small partition of Snow Leopard. I got on the Snow Leopard partition this morning to use an old program, and that worked as normal. Now that I'm done, I am stuck in Snow Leopard. I can't find Yosemite to start in that partition. It doesn't show as a startup disk. I feel like I have lost my computer. The Yosemite disk partition shows up in disk utility, and I verified it. However, I cannot seem to figure out anything to get it to restart into that partition.Â
By the way, I tried restarting and pressing Command-R to get into Recovery Mode. That did not work at all. The Snow Leopard opened every time without going into Recovery.
