PowerPC :: Any Possibility To Delete Extra Drives On G4 Desktop?
May 22, 2007
I've just bought a second mac - little cheapie to use as a second machine. The guy had it set up with three drives showing on the desktop: OSX, CLASSIC and FILES. I don't need OS9/Classic, or the FILES folder, so I threw them in the trash & emptied it. However, it's showing that I only have 4gig of space on the hard drive. I went into system prefs/disc utility, and it's still showing the drives I deleted - although greyed out. Its seems to still be allocating them 5.9gb each of space. In the column on the left in disc utility, it shows the following drive icons:
19.1 GB MAXTOR 92049U3
OSX
CLASSIC
FILES
I tried deleting them through utility, but I must have done something wrong, as they just popped up on my desktop again. Looks like I need to remove partitions.
I have a Mac Pro and currently have two drives in it, a system drive that's using as the startup disc and for most of my use. The 2nd drive is more like a server drive which is used on that system but also shared with all computers on my home network. i use it for things like clipart, backups of itunes from the laptops, media files, etc.
I just installed a 3rd hard drive and have been planning to set it up as a Time Machine drive for my Mac Pro. I have several questions though.
I assume when I do this it will just work as a Time Machine drive for my main system/startup drive, correct?
Is there a way I can use Time Machine for the 2nd drive in my system? In a sense setting up two Time Machine backups, one from the main drive to this new backup drive and the 2nd from the server drive to a 4th drive I can add in the future?
If the 2nd question is a No, is there a way I can set it up so that Time Machine simply backs up both the main drive and that 2nd, server drive, to the Time Machine drive? I really prefer not to use this option since both drives are 1TB and the hard drive I have just gotten as the time machine drive is 1.5TB. I think that should be okay for my main drive since it is only 30% used or so but with backing both onto it I don't think I have enough space to do it well.
I have a Powerbook G4 that has a broken shift and enter key. The other shift and enter both work fine, so I haven't lost any functionality, but I'd like to fix it anyway. They are the only two keys that do not work. Would buying a new keyboard fix this problem? If not, what do I need to do?
i'm wondering if anyone has an extra ibook charger that i could purchase. i have the last g3 ibook series made (900 mhz). if anyone has an extra keyboard for that same model i would also be interested!
what i intend to do is have my imac g5 and my peecee (pc ) on the same desk, but of course i cannot use the imac display, so i will use an extra display and use a KVM switch, my question is; Will the extra screen need to be the same resolution as the imac using ssd?
Is this hard drive going to work as an extra drive in a: Power Mac G5 Power PC G5 (2.2) existing ram 2x512MB PC3200U-30330 Western Digital Caviar (WD5000AAKS) 500GB SATAII 7200RPM 16MB Buffer (OEM)
I have a G4 iBook that I use as my play computer and my mod book... I just dyed the top case and the bottom case (also the battery cover) all black and I changed the apple to red! It looks really sweet and it matches my backpack... Ok well I just read about a guy that wants to take out his optical drive out and put another hard drive in.
My question is... Would that be possible with my iBook? It is a early 2004 ibook g4 1.07 GHz, 768 MB RAM, and a small 30 gig hard drive! I would love to add more hard drive space without having to go through the hassle of finding a way to transfer all of my data on this hard drive to another!
Now, I have Apple eMac 1 GHz, G4. I would like to have an extra hard drive, since this one is almost full. As I've understood, there are only 2 "slots", and one of them is used by DVD/CD reader, other is, of course - hard drive.
For me, it's easiest to buy internal S-ATA drive. Now, how will I connect it. Are there any S-ATA to Firewire cables / adapters.
When I boot up, my external drives are not on the desktop. I discovered that if the Finder is relaunched, they show up and all is well. Another issue that may be related: When powering down, the computer needs a force-quit most of the time. It hangs on the spinning gear
I'm using SL, and these do appear to be hidden files. But they are drives (shared apparently, blue with the people on the drive as the logo) and if I click get info it says under server: file//localhost/home. The "net" drive appears as file//localhost/net. Sharing and permissions says - you can only read. I definitely don't run any servers, just browsing for the most part. I haven't noticed this drive until today.
i have tried going to the disk utilities and remounting my external drives and checked for an option in system prefs, but my external drives (both flash drive and hard drive) just won't show up on my desktop. My computer isn't even a week old!
Permissions Problem in Lion: Drives Do Not Show on Desktop I created a new Administrator account in Lion. When I log into this, neither my internal hard drive, nor the two external hard drives, show up on the desktop. I clicked on "Documents" in the dock when logged into this new account to get a window. Here, again the internal HD does not show up.Â
1) The two external FW drives did show up this way
2) When I click on the various folders in the sidebar (Desktop, Downloads, Movie, Music, Pictures) I get a "the x folder cannot be opened cuz you do not have permissions" type error message.
3) Only "Applications" folder opens in the usual way from this approach.Â
This problem occurs on both my work and my MBP computers, both of which were just upgraded to Lion.Disk Utility's "Repair Disk Permissions" command successfully completes, but the problem still persists.I'm having several weird program issues (e.g., Photoshop CS3 and FolderSynch do not run) that I think MIGHT be related to this. How did this happen with the upgrade to Lion? Most importantly, how do I fix it and get my permissions back to a normal state?
I'm a relatively new Mac user (Macbook Pro 15). Can anyone tell me hwo to delete files from an external drive WITHOUT having to empty the entire trash bin. I can easily send the files to trash, however this does not free up disk space until I empty the trash. Personally I don't like to empty all the time as it ceases to become an effective safety net.
So I just received my Nehalem Mac Pro today, and I successfully installed three new hard drives in it, and I can access all four of my drives in Finder, but NONE of them (including the Boot Drive that came with the computer) are showing up on the desktop! I can't figure out why so I thought I'd ask here.
Oddly enough, my Firewire 800 Drive shows up on the desktop. Anyone have any ideas why this would happen? And how to fix it?
I am a photographer. My Mac Tower and Macbook Pros display my external hard drives on the desktop. That makes workflow so much easier. I just purchased an I-Mac and have to access the external HDs through the menu. how I can display the icons for the external HDs on my desktop?Â
I have three external harddrives all of which are connected through different ports, all show up in finder, all show up in disk utility, but none of them will show up on my desktop. I looked at a few other posts similar to mine but the answers given to other problems have not worked. There is no way all three of my cords are causing a connection problem and I have repaired and verifyd all the drives and still nothing.
I have a 24" iMac and it was running fine the other week and now I get this annoying error=36 whenever I try to transfer large files from desktop to my external drives. It goes about 1/4 way with the transfers then stops with the error=36 message. I've tried to reset the pram but it won't let me. It just keeps on restarting to the same gray screen with the single short beep tone over and over until I let go of the option, command, P & R buttons and restarts normally but does not reset the pram.
I was looking around at CompUSA and noted all of the drives for discs possible. I saw the Sony Blu-Ray and a Memorex/Sony/LG DVD Superdrive and was wondering that if the box says that they are only PC, does that mean that they aren't compatible with Mac? Also can these drives be reflashed for use on a Mac? I would be very interested in sticking the Blu-Ray Sony drive on my G3.
the original optical drive in my G4 had been dying for a while - it would only respond to "eject" commands if there was a disc in the drive. If I inadvertently closed the drive without a disc, it would refuse to eject. It tried. It made a little motor sound, like it was trying to eject, then it gave up with an even smaller motor sound.
In my current dual 800mhz PowerMac G4, I have two 80gb hard drives which were ordered from Apple (didn't know better at the time). Will I be able to put them in my Mac Pro when it comes in a few weeks, or are they too old to be compatible?
My G5 PowerPC will not recognize any external drive, on the desktop or Disk Utility. One showed up briefly, but the computer locked up . I've tried each drive on my Imac and they all show up and work perfectly.
I currently have a 2010 Mac Mini connected to my TV with 3 external drives with my movies/tv shows/itunes attached. I have an old PPC g5 iMac in the other room doing nothing. Can I use that iMac as a server with the external drives attached and have Plex read them all from my network on the Mini?
A buddy of mine has had a Power Mac G4 sitting around for a while now. I asked him about it, and he told me that I could have it if I wanted. He really only uses his MacBook Pro anyways. So, I get home, plug it all in, and nothing happens. I opened up the side and everything seems to be in place. There seem to be 2 hard drives, one which isn't screwed in. One of them isn't plugged in, I'm not too sure what that's about. Power supply is there, RAM is there. I don't know why it's not coming on. When I push the power button, a light on the front flashes for a second, but nothing happens. I know it needs a RAM upgrade, and probably a processor upgrade as well. However, first, I'd like to get it running first.
I have read that it is "a shortcut to disaster" if I do a RAID0 (or any other RAID for that matter), if the Hard Drives are dissimilar. I have the original HD 149GB (now 5 years old), and have bought a new 1T HD, and was planning on setting them up as a striped RAID0. Is this a bad idea? Should I purchase a second 1T HD and do a RAID0 or RAID1 setup instead?
