The plastic piece around the dc jack is broken and blocking the power adapter from being able to charge. Is this piece required or can I remove it? Does anybody know where I could get a replacement piece?
View 8 RepliesI have a 1.67 GHz Powerbook G4. This morning it was fine. When I got home from work, it decided that it suddenly no longer wants to stay on when not plugged in. The battery is showing a full charge. The light on the plug is green. But the second I unplug the cord from the laptop, the entire thing shuts down.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy powerbook G4 has a button thats used to unhinge the LCD screen and flip the computer open. When I flip it open, the light turns on, but it should be off. If I pull the LCD screen forward as if I am going to close the screen, the light turns off as I am pulling the screen forward. As soon as I stop the motion, the power light goes back on. Its very odd.
View 10 Replies View RelatedMy girlfriend has a 12 inch Powerbook G4. She noticed that the battery life was starting to dwindle. Tonight, she tried using it. It wouldn't power up. The battery indicator showed one flickering power circle. The adaptor has the green circle on it, indicating the battery has a full charge. However, the computer won't charge up.I've read the 12 inchers don't have separate PMUs. Could that prevent the machine from starting? She was using it earlier this evening, as she e-mailed me pictures from our vacation.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI've got a Powerbook G4 that has a booting issue. I will hear the startup "dong" a whirl of the drive, then it doesn't go to the grey screen with the Apple. It just sits there with a black screen.If I wait a few hours and try it, sometimes it starts up fine, or sometimes it will sit on the grey screen with the Apple symbol and do nothing.If it does boot correctly, none of the USB ports work. Any ideas on if its worth trying to repair since its 2 and a half years old and I didn't get the Apple Extended Service plan?
View 2 Replies View RelatedHoping that some of you here still own or have owned Powerbooks recently... I have a PB G4 1.67ghz that I bought in July 2005. Since then, it's seen the back of the Apple Store several times to replace three logic boards, a screen, and a SuperDrive, with the most recent instance being the third logic board replacement. This has left the future of my laptop in uncertainty, as the warranty expires this July. In the past, I've owned several Macs for 5 years or more, including my beloved G4 Cube, so I'm no stranger to sticking with my Mac until it's absolutely necessary to upgrade... and financially, I was planning for this computer to last me another 2 years before I had to upgrade.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 12" PowerBook G4 (the very last revision in 2006) and I've never had issues with the bluetooth before (although I've only ever used it to move a few pictures from my phone to my laptop occasionally). This week, I bought a wireless mighty mouse and connected it no problem. Yesterday was the first day I used it and it worked like a champ all day. Today, I was using it and in the middle of moving it around, it just stopped responding. My trackpad still works fine, but the cursor stops moving with the mouse, the clicker doesn't work, etc. When I turn the mouse off for a minute and then turn it back on, it works for a few minutes and then quits again. The first thing I tried was to swap batteries, but that didn't help. Neither did a restart.
View 4 Replies View Relatedrecently my powerbook g4 has been doing some funny things. ..--Sometimes it won't turn on when pressing the button but eventually it will. --The computer would not book up earlier and would just stay on a white screen, like the white screen you normally get when booting but without the apple logo.--When my computer eventually booted it worked for a couple of mins and then the screen went a tinted black colour and a box came up in the middle of the screen saying i need to reboot (the box had a power logo for the background)--Then i rebooted and as i was rebooting a black screen came up with lots of writing in white. A bit like on a windows pc.

I was wondering if there was some way I could fix the latch myself that was not invasive (dont have to remove the bezel), or if there was a way apple would repair it for free since it wasnt from a drop(says prev. owner). IF there isnt, I was wondering if a magnetic strip applied to the case and bezel would keep it closed, or harm the internals...? Would velcro adhesives work? I would rather not use a wrap-around solution to clasp it shut
About the Powerbook G4 17" sound quality. It sounds almost the same as my Powerbook G4 15" 867mhz did, isnt it supposed to be a little louder than that? Could anyone describe their experiences with the PBg4 17" an sound volume?
I have a 17" PB, 1.33 ghz with 1.76gb ram. In September it gave signs of the hard drive failing. It would crash right after booting and then not boot at all.If I booted into target disk mode i could still access the files. I backed everything up and did many versions of trying to reformat / reinstall my OS to no avail. When Leopard came out I went through the process again to see if that might help but it didn't. Today I replaced the HD and now it still won't boot at all. It goes to the grey apple screen with the rotating loading icon and stalls. I've let it sit there for 10 minutes or more.

For this reason, is it better to just power it off the powersupply and take out the battery? Any harm done in having the battery there and charging for extended periods?

The laptop was free, but the power cord will apparently not be so I expensive. Basically PowerBook will be used for writing papers, other non-Internet stuff I need to do this year (senior in high school). Right now I am using my iPod touch as my primary computer. My question is, should I go ahead and just pay the money for a power cord or should I just suck it up and wait until may-isu when I get a new notebook? Obviously I'd like to avoid paying a lot but would the money for a new cord be worth it? If not I could always use google docs for papers when I'm not at the house, how advantageous would having an actual notebook be
I recently tried to upgrade my powerbook with a new HD (see but forgot to format the drive before trying to install the operating system. I gave it another go last night but with the new disk installed and everything back in place, it would not power back up. I took it to bits again and checked everthing was connected including the little ribbon cable from the keyboard but still nothing. I put the old disk back in with the same results. there is no response from the power key at all. Everything is pushed home where it should be so I'm a lttle worried about what could have happened.

What is the best way to do it?- I could attempt to open the case and remove the harddrive myself, get a 2.5-to-3.5-inch harddrive adapter for about $10, and put it in my Mac Pro. From what I've read this would work, although I've never tried anything like it and I'm not sure how hard it would be.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a PowerBook G4 1.67 that shut itself down sometime during the day yesterday, and will not power back up. It's completely unresponsive to the power button, with no signs of life whatsoever.
I've tried resetting the PMU. There has been no new hardware or software installed. This has been tried with 2 batteries, and 2 AC power supplies.
There is inconsistency with the color of the AC power supply tip, as it doesn't seem to indicate the strength of the battery. Regardless of which battery or how much charge is left, the tip is Green, and will flicker Yellow very quickly once, when plugged in. It was Green following the initial shutdown, Yellow when I placed a dead battery in it, and then eventually turned Green. Now, it seems permanently in the Green / flicker Yellow state.
It did fully charge one battery while like this.
Is it possible to mod a PowerBook to use the MagSafe adapter instead of the regular adapter? I'd be willing to do it myself, but I haven't found any real consensus on whether or not it's even possible.

It was very very hot. It was late, and I was slow to react and it remained plugged into the computer after this had happened still charging it as if nothing had happened.
The computer is fine too.
Basically, I'd like to know if anyone has had a similar issue happen to them, and if I should get a new power cord? Or if you think it is okay to carry on using this one.
I haven't plugged it in since last night to see if it works or not, I am worried it will break the lap top.
Does anyone know if there's anyway to turn on an aluminum powerbook without the power button? I mean is there any keystroke combination that can turn a powerbook on?

I took the battery out and pressed a few key and it worked for a little while. Now when I plug it up to recharge the light goes green to red then off. I found a so called reset button on the apple site and lifted the keyboard and it is not in site.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI acquired a gimped Powerbook G4 from one of our 'daughter' companies. The laptop works fine when using the A/C adapter. If I unplug the A/C adapter while the power is on, the screen/keyboard lights will go off. However, the hard drive is still spinning. If I plug the A/C adapter back in, the LCD backlight comes back on, but it does not display what was on the screen. I have to hold the power button down for a few seconds to power it down completely. Upon turning it back on, everything works fine again. Does this sound like a battery issue or motherboard problem? I have checked the battery serial number against the recall list and this one is supposably good.
View 2 Replies View Relatedso today was the day to replace the broken harddrive inside my 12" Al Powerbook and naturally I've ballsed it up.
The problem came at this stage of pbfixit's instructions. In pulling the power cable out of it's socket, I've pulled the bloody socket off the board.
So this is bad, that much is clear, and I need help, and lots of it. What's the best course of action now? It's not under warranty or anything, it was second hand to begin with.
For what it's worth, if anybody else finds this while searching for dismantling instructions, it's actually not too difficult. I would change this section of the instructions though, as I'm sure it'd be easier to lift up the top case slightly and then disconnect these two cables rather than fiddling through the tiny holes. I think going in that way give you a side angle and more opportunity to grip properly. And less opportunity to break your Powerbook. Anyhoo...
About a week ago I received my new battery due to the recall. The last few days my power book has been great when I open my power book today it will not wake up. So i figured I would plug it in. The light stays green, does not change to orange, and still continues not to wake up. Even taking the battery out and trying to turn it doesn't work. Power cord stays green then as well.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI went to turn on my Powerbook G4 (Aluminum 1.67GHz Low Res) today and when I plugged it in, I noticied a kind of crackling or popping noise. I unplugged the power adapter and tried again. I knew that my battery was dying before this (could only get about 30 min on a charge). But now I cannot start my Powerbook. Whenever I plug in my power adaptor, there is no green/orange light. However, when I take the battery out, I hear the Powerbook trying to start up (hard drive spin). But then there is nothing but my fans on full blast! They will not stop and there is nothing on the screen. I left it there for a good 5 min and nothing changed!
