OS X Yosemite :: Finding And Deleting Duplicate Mac Mail Emails
Dec 10, 2014
Because Mac Mail crashes from time to time, I have duplicate mail from generations of imported mailboxes. How can I find and delete the duplicates safely in Yosemite?Â

My OS is 10.6.1. Several days ago I discovered that my mailbox was jammed with what seemed to be all the messages I had deleted in the past week and that new messages were appearing in duplicate or even triplicate. I deleted all of the old and extra messages, but after a few hours they all reappeared. I went through this routine at least twice, then for a day or so the mail system acted normally. However, this morning all the trashed messages had once again popped up. My software is up to date (I just checked for updates before creating this message).
When I looked up my account online, going through the website of my ISP, there were no duplicates. The inbox, when accessed that way, is never the same as what I see when I use the mail icon, since messages online are not deleted when I delete them in the mail application, so it's harder to make an assessment of what should and shouldn't be there. However, the mail seems to be working normally online.

I have been getting duplicate emails for a while now (17" powerbook 1.5ghz g4, 10.3.5). Sometimes I get 12 copies of the same email! I tried trashing the prefs and that helped for a few days, but it keeps coming back. I also setup and tested my mail account on another machine and that machine never gets doubles.

I have been sending duplicate emails inadvertently recently. It seems it's when I use mBox for mac (registered copy) in Mail to use my Hotmail with IMAP. I hadn't noticed it at first, but now I see every time I send a mail I get 2 copies in my sent box. I can turn off the store sent messages on server option to fix it (but that's the whole point of having IMAP!). Or I can turn off mBox for mac and it also seems to work (but then I can't use IMAP!).
I've also tried on the same machine from gmail, and iCloud accounts (MobileMe), and I had no issue at all. I've also tried 2 different Hotmail accounts, and both of them send double messages every time I send. I think anyone still using a hotmail account will eventually install something like mBox for mac if they've gone Mac recently - as I have. I checked the mail headers of the 2 mails, and they are quite different (masked where appropriate) -

I am using Apple Mail with three Pop3 accounts and I am receiving duplicate emails in one of the three accounts. Each account has a separate email. The account that I am receiving duplicate emails was set up last night. I am leaving the emails on the server, if that has any bearing. I am running OS 10.6.2.

I am using a new 24 inch IMac. I just decided to use mail 3.5 vice thunderbird and have had a number of issues (To me, the program seems incredibly buggy which shocks me)...I have been able to work through most but here is a minor annoyance I cant seem to figure out...
When I delete an email from a list of emails, I want the next email that is highlighted to be the one that is the next one down, not the one that is the next one up. How do you establish this preference?

I just set up my iCloud account and now I receive emails to both my Cox account on my Mail app on my Mac Pro AND on my iCloud account. How do you set it up to where if you delete emails off your Mail app on your Mac it will also delete that same emails off your iCloud account?

I have Mac Mail setup to delete all emails after one month, this includes the Sent, Junk, and Trash. However Mail is only keeping one week's worth. I use iCloud as my sole email account. This issue has been occuring for a few months now.Â

After opening the Mail app in Yosemite, and trying to remove some mails, I get a crash with the following crash report, it always crashes at the same address 0x0000000000000010.
It is in the last month of warranty so if it is a hardware issue is time to go to the genius bar.

My Mail application stopped receiving new emails at 5:48 PM yesterday for some reason. I have several Gmail accounts, one iCloud account and one Yahoo account.Â
I can send emails without a problem, but I'm not receiving any. I checked Activity, and it shows that the program is "fetching new mail" from every single account (it even says how many messages), but for some reason they are not getting through.Â

When I tried to set up Outlook.com account with Mail I was not able to locate Outlook.com settings automatically like one would on iPhone. Anyhow, I set it up manually using the IMAP settings. It works great but the only problem is that it does not push emails instantly. It checks for email in set intervals. How can I set this to push emails?Â

Suddenly Mail has stopped sending emails. Connection Doctor says server is 'offline' and I should ensure passwords and settings are correct. But I changed NOTHING - it just suddenly stopped sending and receiving!
I'm using a late 2012 iMac and a Retina MacBook Pro, both with very latest OS - same problem on both. I've restarted my TimeCapsule and BT HomeHub

I recently upgraded my dad's system from Snow Leopard to Lion, and it went without a hitch, however he's noticed now that Mail is no longer finding emails that it should be. For example, when he would type in Mark in the search (scope: all) in Snow Leopard, he'd have at least 100 emails show up from mark@address, however now in Lion the result returns only 2 recent emails (scope: all). I played around with it for a bit -- but I couldn't get it working. Here's what I tried:Â
I typed in the name of the person and still only two came up. I tried the email address, and still only two came up. It doesn't matter whether what's being searched for is a part of the person's name, email address, subject, to, from, or message, it's just not coming up. Again, scope was set to all, i.e, inbox, sent, etc.Â
Worked perfectly on Snow Leopard. Doesn't work at all on Lion? Dad should be able to type in "Mark" and see the hundred or so emails sent to or from mark@address.com, etc., and this is happening with all his previous emails. He types in things and stuff just doesn't come up anymore. He's on a Mac Pro running the latest version of Lion.

I am stuck with a problem. The problem is that I have two folders. What i'd like is that when I place an item in the main folder it automatically duplicates in the second folder thus keeping both folders in sync.
The folders are in seprate locations within the system. Is this possible? Maybe an Automator action?

I just noticed something while sorting photos around in some folders. I'd click one, and suddenly another picture file appears to get created right under it with the exact same filename & extension.
I tried to delete the duplicate thinking I accidentally hit "duplicate" instead of "copy" when right clicking, and the Original file was also sent to trash. I pulled it back out and it did it again. When I moved it into the subfolder, the duplicate vanished.

When you download a file (a song for example) from the internet and it downloads into your "Downloads" folder in finder, than you drag it to your "music" folder, its permanent home...does this mean you now have 2 copies of this file, one in the downloads folder and one in the music folder?
Is there any way to manage this without manually deleting things every time you download anything? Perhaps I'm missing something

I don't know if I have duplicate files on hand. I've recently installed Leopard and I'd like to purge the system of duplicate files, especially any duplicate OS's that may exist before I install CS3. Does anyone know a reliable way to detect and safely delete these files?

like to understand more about Fonts. I have these two files "/Users/buz/Library/Fonts Disabled/MS PGothic.ttf" "/_My Apps/ Microsoft Office 2004/Office/Fonts/MS PGothic.ttf"Â
Using a Duplicate Finder revealed numerous 'duplicated' fonts on my system, but I'm reluctant to engaging in a slash and burn strategy.Â

I tried to email a video as an attachment to 5 recipients. I did this 5 times in a row with different videos attached to each. They got jammed up and never went out. I deleted them on my macbook pro and they do not show up in my outbox. Now I can't send or receive email on either my laptop or my iphone. My iphone worked for awhile, but now no. I think I need to delete them on the 'server'...
