When you download a file (a song for example) from the internet and it downloads into your "Downloads" folder in finder, than you drag it to your "music" folder, its permanent home...does this mean you now have 2 copies of this file, one in the downloads folder and one in the music folder?
Is there any way to manage this without manually deleting things every time you download anything? Perhaps I'm missing something
I am stuck with a problem. The problem is that I have two folders. What i'd like is that when I place an item in the main folder it automatically duplicates in the second folder thus keeping both folders in sync.
The folders are in seprate locations within the system. Is this possible? Maybe an Automator action?
I just noticed something while sorting photos around in some folders. I'd click one, and suddenly another picture file appears to get created right under it with the exact same filename & extension.
I tried to delete the duplicate thinking I accidentally hit "duplicate" instead of "copy" when right clicking, and the Original file was also sent to trash. I pulled it back out and it did it again. When I moved it into the subfolder, the duplicate vanished.
I don't know if I have duplicate files on hand. I've recently installed Leopard and I'd like to purge the system of duplicate files, especially any duplicate OS's that may exist before I install CS3. Does anyone know a reliable way to detect and safely delete these files?

Several days ago I discovered that my mailbox was jammed with what seemed to be all the messages I had deleted in the past week and that new messages were appearing in duplicate or even triplicate. I deleted all of the old and extra messages, but after a few hours they all reappeared. I went through this routine at least twice, then for a day or so the mail system acted normally. However, this morning all the trashed messages had once again popped up. My software is up to date (I just checked for updates before creating this message).
When I looked up my account online, going through the website of my ISP, there were no duplicates. The inbox, when accessed that way, is never the same as what I see when I use the mail icon, since messages online are not deleted when I delete them in the mail application, so it's harder to make an assessment of what should and shouldn't be there. However, the mail seems to be working normally online.
I just got my iPad and somehow in the set up process I ended up with duplicate address book groups. How can I delete these?

This may sound like a silly question, but I would like to know how I can arrange files manually in Mac? For example, if I have a folder of 100 photos in running order and I want to move London3.jpg between London 1.jpg and London 2.jpg, how do I do that? I've tried all the different sorting/viewing options. This is a very basic feature in Windows but I can't seem to do it in Mac. So tried to manually drag and drop files to my Library and they still won't go there. The songs will only play in my Purchase List and Recently Added. However, Finder won't let me take them out of their arrangement. When i try to drag a file down, it just snaps back to its original position.
I've set it as Arrange by-none and sort by-name, so shouldn't this let me move them?Â

My desktop system (an i3 running Mavericks) will not boot from its internal disk (it simply sits "spinning" its little progress bar at the Apple icon). It also fails to recognize an attached disk that has the Time Machine backups in Recovery mode.Â
Migration Assistant is worthless. I get part way through (specifying a different user as a destination with the i3 disk mounted in Target disk mode) , it exits, and nothing has changed.Â
Yet I can mount the iMac desktop and its disks on a laptop (also running Mavericks) in Target disk move, and see all the files on both disks. I have copied some, and they seem to be intact. Â
So, while I ponder this confusion, I would like to get the most critical info off and onto the laptop. One of those pieces of info is the email contents.Â
Now Mail files "were" in the users Library as I recall, but I believe things were moved in Mavericks (or maybe even a version earlier).Â
Does any one have ( and I remember seeing this posted somewhere online, but just can not find it) the steps to manually move the mail folders over to a new machine so that nothing is lost with the most recent Mail file locations?
I was on twitter and it sounds repeatdly an ad, and appears ads banners so constantly. I had run an antivirus and it detected an ad malware. i tried to uninstall or erase manually all files, but there are two that i cant erase.

I am running into "chmodperation not permitted" when I try to change the permissions on my time machine backup manually.
Here is the complete info. I brought a new MacMini server and was trying to copy my music folder from time machine backup(of my MBP) into the Server. From the Server I logged in as root and tried to change the file permissions of the music folder with this command
sh-3.2# chmod -R o+rw Music
It throws the above error.
I don't have my MBP with me to do anykind of stuff. I don't want to install SL on my macmini and restore from time machine bckup. Is there any other way.
I'm planning to reinstall Snow Leopard. I'm using Time Machine. I want to avoid automatic solutions like "Restore from Time Machine backup" and the Migration Assistant because I want to make sure my system stays clean.
This is how I imagine it:I boot my freshly installed system, plug in my Time Machine external drive, open it with Finder and start dragging back all the stuff I need (Photos, Music and Documents) just as if it were a regular external hard drive with files on it. Then I will reinstall all applications manually.
Will this work? Please tell me if you have ever tried this and whether it worked. Will this not cause problems with permissions or anything like that?

When I sent it to my friend with a PC, he unzipped it and noticed it generated empty files based on the names of the subdirectories (see attached image). Also when you first open the .zip, there's an empty folder called __MACOSX. How to keep the whole package a little more clean?

Is it possible to just drag the new Files1 folder over the old one BUT it just copies over the 'duplicate' files and folders? And leave the others untouched? (bit like how it works when FTP'ing files to a server).
Default behaviour seems to completely overwrite the folder - which is not what I want.
I'm new to the Mac and the owner of a 13" Power Book which I love. However, I'm finding that whenever I do anything much on the Mac involving photos, video or music, the HD space gets eaten up rapidly. I've worked out that this is partly because the Mac has its own way of storing files. So, for example, if I have a folder called 'My Music', where all my music files are stored, once I import these into iTunes, it it all duplicated into the iTunes library, thereby taking up twice the space. I guess that the same thing happens with iphoto and imovie as well.
