IMac :: Moving To Mac From XP - How Not To Lose Data
Jul 19, 2010
I currently sync my iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch on the XP box. My goals are to move all my songs, apps, movies/TV shows etc. over to my new mac. I want to stop using the XP machine all together.
In terms of steps. I'm thinking I need to do this:Ensure both XP and Mac are running the most current version of iTunes - if not upgrade them Sync and back-up each device one last time on the XP machine Transfer the data (via the apple FAQ above) Sync each device with the mac? Will the Mac recognize the devices just like the XP machine did? Will I need to transfer purchases from each device?

I have a PowerBook G4 running OS X. I'm trying to transfer a very large chunk of data (roughly 40 gigs or so) from my Mac to my PC (I need to sell my Mac, so I'm trying to empty it). Fortunately, most of the files can be read by both platforms, so I don't need to convert any data, just move it. Any suggestions on how this could be done? I've thought of burning everything on to DVDs and moving them that way, but I'm wondering if there's another way.

I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro, which should be arriving in the mail shortly. I currently have a Macbook running Tiger which I bought in June 2006. I was wondering how it would be possible for me to easily move all of my data (iTunes library, applications, etc.) and settings to my new Macbook Pro.

Just received my 27" iMac i7. I've noticed that every few hours I need to lift the screen up, because the weight of the screen pulls it downward on it's hinge.
Does anyone else have this issue? What do I do to resolve it?

I currently have a 2006 white macbook that I have backed everything up onto an external HD with Time Machine. I have bought one of the new 13" Macbook Pros, but I can't just plug the external HD in and import everything, as the Pro has CS5 and the new Microsoft Office on it which I don't want to lose.
So I'm wondering, how can I get everything from my macbook onto my macbook pro, without losing CS5 and Office 2011.
Also, I've just realised, my macbook currently has Office 2008 on it, so I don't want to transfer that over in case it covers the newer copy of Office on the Pro.

So I have a uMBP 5,4 and a bunch of externals. I am going to be moving over 500 gigs of data from one external to another. They both have about the same speed read/write, but with the uMBP I only have one FW800 port. So my question is how should I connect these drives (the way I understand it you only get one 800 Mbps link to the computer and connecting multiple drives only allows them to share this through-put) Will it be fast to connect one via USB and one via FW800 or just daisy chain them using FW800?

I wish to move many GB of data (docs, photos, etc.) from one user ID to another one on the same Mac. I know I can use Time Machine and run a back-up, I can also copy the folders to (8 GB) DVDs.Â
Are there other options I can use? What would these be and what would be the benefits of using one method rather than another. Eventually I want to remove one of the user IDs after everything has been moved to the other one. I wondered if sharing folders would benefit and how is this accomplished? If one ID is later removed, then what happens with the sharing of folders?Â

So I'm planning on getting a new MacBook here shortly and was wondering how the Time Machine transfer works. A few questions:
1. Can I select which Data I upload to the new computer?
2. Is data from Address Book saved?
3. When I want to backup my new computer, can I keep the prior back up from my old computer and have a separate one for the new computer?

I want to move everything from my current user account to another account. Both accounts are administrator accounts. As I am typing, I am copying over files from each of my home folders (cmd-A, cmd-C, go to new account's public folder, create folder of same name, cmd-V). The Migration Assistant won't aid because that is only for multiple Macs. I want to move my account to another account on the same Mac.

I have 1 dead pixel and it didn't bother me that much, but I recently turned off the screen to see smudges to clean it and there's a freaking gash behind the glass on the right side. I'm at day 13, so I want to bring it in to get it replaced, but my question is, will I lose all my settings? Can I back up my programs and everything to an external and just install them when I get the new replacement and it will be just like my old one? What about settings like my view settings in the finder and what not? How much will I have to redo. Also, I bought 16BG of third party ram. I will have to put back the old ram obviously, but I'm just wondering if there's anything I should know.

I have been trying to move my old TimeMachine data to a new, larger hard drive. A very helpful member of another forum suggested I use the Disk Utility "Restore" utility, restoring my TimeMachine data from the old disk to a new disk. For some reason this will not work for me.

Read the below quote from Mac Performance Guide. Is it a good idea? I know a bit of DOS, so I am used to command line commands but even after after Lloyd Chambers explanation, still not sure what is going to happen? ln -s /Volumes/Master/Mail Library/Mail
The reason I want to move my Mail folder out of the home directory is because I plan to have a SSD as my boot drive and the home directory is on the boot drive, correct? "Moving the Apple Mail folder to your data volume".
This trick lets you move your Mail folder out of your home directory onto your data volume. I've used this technique for years so that I can forget about having to back up my home directory (default location for Apple Mail) and simply back up my one data volume: Master. The same trick can be used for any similarly irritating program that insists on storing its data in your home directory, rather than giving you a choice (a few programs are too brain-dead for this to work). Programs like iTunes let you choose where to put your music; use that option.
Your Apple Mail folder is in the Library folder of your home directory. The trick requires starting Terminal. If that makes you uncomfortable, stop here! You are going to make a symbolic link.
0. Quit Apple Mail, and make a backup of your mail folder.
1. Copy the Mail folder to the top level of your data drive (or elsewhere, then modify step 3 appropriately).
2. Rename the original mail folder to Mail.old as an additional backup.
3. Start a Terminal window and type:
ln -s /Volumes/Master/Mail Library/Mail
This makes a symbolic link to the folder Mail on the volume Master (type the name of your volume, and use quotes around it if the volume name contains a space character). The resulting file Library/Mail is a tiny file that says "look over there on /Volumes/Master/Mail instead". From here on out Apple Mail won't know the difference! Launch Apple Mail and verify that it worked. If you encounter problems, simply copy your backup back into place."

I just purchased a new iMac 24" 2009 Model. I also got a Wireless Mighty Mouse & Wireless keyboard. I have owned the system for 6 days and each day the Mighty Mouse and keyboard will lose connection and require me to hold the power button down on the imac to restart the system. I called apple and was told to do a "Option Command R P" Reset. This did not fix the problem... I then called them again and was told to format the system.. This did not fix the problem.. I replaced the batteries, turned bluetooth off on any near by devices changed my 802.11 freq to a different channel. It seems from information collected from other forums that this is effecting mainly the new alum 2009 imac...I am starting to think this is now hardware. Also something I noticed.. Brand new FRESH Energizer Ultimate Batteries $25. I put them into the mighty mouse. 1 day later iStat reports the mouse is at 73%!! thats a big drop in 1 day

I have a mac desktop. Just recently, possible since an upgrade to mavericks, it loses its ability to use wifi its clearly recognises as connected. The temporary solution I have involves opening the network and running wifi diagnostics. It always comes back and says it is all fine but it fixes it. ie the act of running diagnostics resolves the problem. Â
Happens every 10 mins or so when using and is now becoming a sore point.Â
I am not even slightly technical. I turn on, I type, I turn off.

Got my new iMac 27" i7 2.93 for three weeks ago. Everything was kind of fine but now everytime i boot it starts to write to the disk, and since you really can hear when the machine writes to the disk, it's obvious when it does it. The disk is a WDC WD1001FALS-40Y6A0
- I turned of spotlight indexing, rebooted, 30 minutes later it was still writing like there was no tomorrow.
- Checked Console.app, just Google Chrome trowing messages (which is running slower then on my old MBP Santa Rosa 5400 rpm).
- Ran disk utilty repair permissions, still no luck.
- Used Lingon to get rid of **** at startup, still no luck.
- No disk encryption.
The bottom line: The machine runs slower, boots applications slower and functions slower then my old MBP 2.4 ghz Santa Rosa 2007 with a 5400 rpm hdd. I tried to run a blu ray mkv from the internal disk, stuttered as hell and didn't work despite VLC being the only open application. Then i ran it from an external 5400 rpm Firewire drive and it worked flawlessy. What is up with this? Shall i reinstall and empty my disk?
Is there any software for checking what applications is currently writing to the HDD?

I tried moving my iWeb site from my MacBook to my iMac,
So i put the domain file on a USB stick and opened it on the iMac.
When iWeb opened I selected the file as the domain.
Now when I open iWeb I still have to choose a domain.. It still pops up. This:
How do I make it so I don't have to do this every time I open iWeb?

The case is this: I have a 200 GB Maxtor harddrive onto witch i want to copy all the video, zip and other files from my imac. I have allredy copied most of them by using a memory stick and taking it over to a PC and from there over to the Maxtor. But the files i have left on the mac is to large for the memory stick.
The Mac can only read, and not wright the Maxtor. But i just can't understand that i can just copy the files from the Mac to the Maxtor via a PC, but not directly?? isnt there a way to copy the files directly to the Maxtor?
I don't know much about filesystems but on my imac it says someting with RAID and aufofs. I have also understood that i can format the Maxtor to FAT-32, but some of the files are greater than 4 GB, so that wont work right?

I have taking the plunge and bought a new i7 iMac. On my current machine I have 2 WD external USB drives (1TB) in RAID mirror, done through Disk Utilities. I am looking for advice on the correct way to move this to my new machine. Do I simply plug them in, and OSX does the rest? The data is very valuable, and I don't really have enough space to copy it all / back it up before i move it. Being a mirror, it is essentially is my backup.

So this question has probably been answered a few times but i can't find a thread with the answer in it...
I'm getting my new iMac today and i have an itunes library on my current macbook(2006, 10.4.11), and i was hoping to move it to the iMac. The files are stored on my external HDD. I can't use the migration assistant because i don't have any firewire cables either. I was also hoping to keep all the ratings and play information ect.

I just got a used iMac (running 10.5.8) with the metal keyboard and mouse. I unpacked the box, plugged in the computer, hooked up the keyboard and mouse. The computer screen came up. I can move around a little via the keyboard's arrow keys but the cursor will not move via the mouse. I got it to move a little by swiping my thumb across the back but that is it. I switched my older, working, keyboard and mouse to the newer machine and it didn't work there. I switched the newer metal keyboard and mouse my older iMac and they worked just fine. What could be going on with the new (but used) computer? I have tried every port for the mouse, keyboard as well as every back port but nothing moves the cursor.Â
