I have been trying to move my old TimeMachine data to a new, larger hard drive. A very helpful member of another forum suggested I use the Disk Utility "Restore" utility, restoring my TimeMachine data from the old disk to a new disk. For some reason this will not work for me.
View 21 RepliesMy internal 1TB hard drive on my iMac is dead and I don't have the money to replace it at the moment. I have everything backed up on an external 1TB drive using Time Machine. As a workaround for the time being,Is there any way I can install the system on the external drive and use that as the boot drive without erasing the Time Machine Backups? It seems to me I would have to have two partitions for the external drive, one for the system, and one for Time Machine. But is there any way to add a partition without erasing the existing one with Time Machine only on it?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI can't find a thread that addresses my particular problem, so I'm hoping somebody out there can point me in the right direction. I have a 100gb iTunes folder on my MacBook which I wish to transfer to my new iMac. Rather than simply copy it across to the iMac's HD, I would rather copy it to an external HD and then run iTunes from the external HD connected to my iMac. So my question is simply what is the best way to do this.
Also, can anyone recommend a great external HD which won't expire after 6 months?
I recently bought a 160GB external hard drive, and decided to transfer my iTunes music to it. I followed the instructions in the Help section of the iTunes program. The first time, I mistakenly created an empty "iTunes" folder and put an "iTunes music" folder inside, where i proceeded to copy the files. I had already set the defult location of the library to my F: drive, my external hard drive. However, the original location of the files stayed in iTunes. Again, following the advice of the iTunes program, I deleted the original folders, and I dragged the new iTunes music folder into the window - at which point i had TWO copies of each file - the first one with an exclamation beside it (original file missing) and the second being my new copies.

Recently, drive B broke and I restored the data on a replacement drive and gave the volume the same name as the broken one had. I made TimeMachine aware of the fact that this new drive corresponds to the old one by using the "tmutil -a associatedisk" command as described here: [URL]When TimeMachine started the next backup, it did not perform all full backup of the new drive, though still way more than it should. So far so god.
The problem is: if TimeMachine performs a backup while the new drive (the replacement of drive B) is not connected, it does not create the hard links for it. Drive A is not connected either, though hard links for it show up in the Backups.backupdb folder for this backup. If the replacement drive is connected the next time, TimeMachine will perform a full backup of it ... most likely because the previous backup does not contain any hard links.

My hard drive crashed and corrupted some of my iMovie MOVs. When launching iMovie, I get a series of alerts (attached image). I'm trying to find what is making iMovie look for these files so I can clear out the reference. I tried searching for the file name and nothing comes up. I already know the file is missing, I'd just like iMove to stop looking for it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedToday I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.
Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.
Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.
I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.
I'm looking for a FREE data recovery app for os x to recover data from a NTFS hard drive. The hard has lost it's volume and will not mount and I've tried some other programs and I can see the files but I can't get them off because every program I've tried isn't free and won't let me copy them off. I've tried looking for one but I can't seem to find a good one. I just want to copy off the files and then I'll wipe the drive and fix the parition.

I have been told that they have replaced my hard drive but could not get any data off the old one. Had a hard drive failing/failure. I am having my bad hard drive replaced with a bigger hard drive. (New Obviously) I have an iMac. (1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 17-inch) To have my data transferred from the old drive will cost over a hundred bucks more. I am trying to save money but transferring it myself. All im looking to transfer is my photos. I did not have an external drive but i WILL purchse one now. My question, (to save some money) is how would i transfer my old pictures from my old drive, too my new installed hard drive. Can i use USB? Firewire?

I took it to the Apple store and they told me the logic board would need to be replaced. The computer itself is pretty beat up so I figure it's time for a new one. I plan on buying a Macbook Pro this week. How can I get files off of my old MacBook? The logic board is dead so I can't really do much. Any advice? Thank You. Also, there is no way I want to pay Apple $100 for their One-to-One transfer program.

For whatever reason, my Hard Drive icon has moved itself down a spot on the OS X desktop. It's the only icon on the desktop and when I put it back in the upper right corner like it was originally it stays until I reboot and then it's moved back down a "spot." Anyone run into this funny behavior?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am moving a few folders which are in excess of 4 gig each from one hard drive to another to try and free up space, of course I am aware that one is formatted for mac and the other is ms dos but I already have stuff on it and can't take it off in order to reformat it (or I do not want to). Is there a program that exist that will allow me to do this, I was only thinking in regard to programs such as Senuti for backing up an iPod. Since an iPod is so huge, you tell the program where to put the songs and regardless of the space it will do it, no questions asked. If you understand what I am on about can you please assist me in any other way in regard to solving me problem.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI made an attempt to use Winclone to move Win7 (NTFS, 64-bit) to a new hard drive. After the image was deployed I rebooted. On the new drive,Win7 BSODs - I can't even boot into command line mode as it summarily reboots. The original bootcamp partition boots perfectly, however. I know Winclone was discontinued - assuming other people have used it with Win7 and have not had problems, without having to use Win7's DVD to do a repair install or to - for the moment - delete the original bootcamp partition that I know works, are there any means to fix the boot sector or alleviate this problem? (I think the BCD wants to point to the wrong partition, despite it starting to boot on its own...)

I just want to copy everything that I have, put them on the external hard drive and move on. How can I do this where I can use these pictures on another computer though if needed? Recently got married and while we were hanging out with our friends they stuck each of their camera memory cards into our mac and transferred all the videos and pics on to the computer. Now I'm home and I want to transfer all those pics/videos on to our external hard drive. I've tried everything! I've tried exporting...I've tried dragging the pics. Nothing will work. The weird thing is, I'm able to move pics from the HD over to my computer but not vice versa.

Every time I try to trash my old itunes file and access the removable HD, I cant find it from iTunes. the only thing I can get it to do is to reload (duplicate) the entire 30gb library on the HD I want it off of. So, I've been searching the forums, as I just had a 1TB (well actually a dual 500GB) external drive stop mounting and start clicking on me. I'm trying to find a way to recover files, and I know I've seen a lot of posts on DriveSavers, which. I was searching around, and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a company called "OneWorld Data Recovery." It was something I stumbled across, but I can't find any reviews, or nail down anybody who's used it.

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

I have two WD 640gigs and the stock WD 500, and I am having trouble deciding on the the optimum configuration. I am open to suggestions. I use my computer for general use as well as for my video editing and graphic design hobbies if that info helps.
I am curious as to the benefits of of the following:
Drive 1 (640)
partition 1: 150gig for OS
partition 2: Bootcamp
remainder: Offline storage
Drive 2 (640)
partition 1: Applications
remainder: music/photos
(scratch disk here?)
Drive 3: (500)
Time machine
Would there be a noticeable benefit to having the applications being separate from the OS boot drive? What if anything else should be split across multiple HDs to increase speed? I've heard of moving the swap file from elsewhere on the forum but I am not sure as to what exactly that is nor the benefits of doing it.
My final question(s) is how exactly I could go by moving my application folder to another drive separate from the OS drive? Just drag and drop? What is this deal with making an alias?
I am running out of space on my laptop so I am moving all my music to an external hard drive. If I keep my file directory structure and naming the same, can I simply "re-point" iTunes to this new storage location and all my songs (etc...) will keep working in iTunes? Will storing the music on an external hard drive effect the performance (speed) of iTunes and/or iPod syncing?
