MacBook Pro :: How To Disable Cursor From Blinking On A Global Level
Dec 12, 2014
I've already tried to enter several commands in the terminal, but they don't work on a global level, e.g. defaults write -g CursorBlink -string 0Â (did not work)Â defaults write -g NSTextInsertionPointBlinkPeriod -int 99999999 .The blinking cursor in Safari and in the menu

My tech teacher gave me a windows cd that has unlimited activations or whatever, and my friend just installed boot camp on his macbook 13". I have the same computer, and yet after partitioning with boot camp assistant, and starting the windows installer with the Windows disk inserted, I get a black screen with a blinking cursor. I have tried repairing the disk when booted from the Leopard cd, resetting the PRAM, and changing the screen resolution to 800X600. I have removed the partition and repartitioned several times. I know for a fact that it is not the disk, because people are installing windows with it as I speak.

I've just installed a Windows 7 using bootcamp, all the installation went without any problems, but when I try to boot the Win7 partition it shows a blinking cursor a long time, then it boots windows and everything works perfectly.
I have read that this problem is related to some BIOS operation that the activated-by-other-means windows 7 copy does. It would be great if there's a solution to this issue because it's very annoying. But anyway it's the price for not buying the things in the right way (I'm only use windows a few times and I want to try Win7, so I'm not planning to pay such a expensive price for a full price license)
However, My worries are in other directions, does this BIOS things, harm in any way to the regular OSX boot process?? Actually OSX boots as usual.

my Boot Camp install of XP—I successfully partitioned the disk in my new Mac Pro to install XP, but my problem occurs when re-booting to install XP itself. When the machine rebooted the first time to install, it stopped at a black screen with a blinking white cursor, old-school DOS style. Second time when I rebooted and held down Option, it spit out the Windows CD. When I put it back in and it appeared and I tried to select it, it spun up, looked like it was going to work, and then spit it out again, whereupon I got a DOS prompt asking me to put in a bootable volume and press any key. When I inserted the CD, it spun up, but pressing keys on the keyboard did nothing. I tried rebooting again. This time holding option yielded both the Mac HD and the Windows CD (no spitting out!). Taking this as a good sign, I selected the CD and waited. Same black screen with blinking white cursor as last time, no other response, no prompts, never progesses to an installer, pressing keys didn't help.
Has anyone else run into this problem? This is a brand new Mac Pro with the Radeon in it, I have a USB keyboard and mouse hooked up, and it has the latest firmware update.
EDIT: Seems the CD was bad. Slipstreamed SP2 into my original CD and went. Now I just need to get those ATI drivers.

I noticed this problem beginning (give or take) 3weeks ago with my iMac. I'm currently running Leopard with the latest update. It seems I have an erratic blinking cursor, no matter if placed in a URL field, a search field of any sort, or anywhere just trying to type something, the cursor seems to "take off" in this sort of perpetual blinking that I can't make stop. When the problem first began, after 2 restarts, my machine returned to normal. However, yesterday afternoon, the same problem re-appeared.
When trying to close applications, the problem causes a repeated "pinging" sound. I've tried 3 restarts without any luck. I generally leave my machine on all the time with sleep mode activated. I currently use the wireless aluminum BT keyboard and magic mouse. The magic mouse has the latest drivers that fixed my wireless keyboard from dying after every 3 or so days. Nonetheless, I'm baffled, frustrated, and confused on this one. I even ran disk utility this morning to see if something was wrong with the hard disk. The utility finished saying the hard disk appears to be ok.

Was wondering if there is some way to disable the auto-open cursor hover feature? (Not sure what else to call it). It's driving me nuts. It's most disfunctional with Safari--for example when I'm trying to find a specific webpage in the Histor-- if I don't keep moving the cursor constantly, whatever URL the cursor happens to be over will just open and load. Then I have to start over again. This seems to happen sometimes on the desktop as well.

I recently tried to watch videos at The Escapist and was unable to. This has been happening since about Friday last week. I also have found that I am unable to play some flash games. I also found that I can't watch videos at Veoh. I tried to adjust my preferences in the Flash Global Settings Manager to accept third party cookies so that I can do these things. It isn't working. The boxes won't check. Is anybody else having this problem? If so what did you do about it? This problem only occurs on my MacBook. I am still able to do these things on a Windows xp desktop I have in the same house.

quick question. How do I set global finder settings? I like my finder windows to be sorted by kind, that way they are alphabetical but folders and files arent mixed in the list. I know I can use "show view options" to do this, but I have to do that for each folder seperately. How do I access the global settings? Google, search here, and OSX search haven't found anything.

I'm editing a book in which the author switched programs and from PC to Mac in mid-stream, so the styling of the footnotes is not consistent. The text of the book is now in NeoOffice, and I've been asked to bring all the footnotes in accord with each other. I wondered whether there is a command that will change them so they all are in the same typeface and size. (I know that by setting up a Footnote style, all new footnotes will be correct, but I'm talking about ones that already exist). The author hasn't yet finished with the book, or I'd just get her to give me a chapter or two at a time and change them manually. Time is too short for us to wait till the end, when she has done all her revisions. I guess you get the picture. If there is no way to do this, please just tell me. If you know of one, though, I'd be grateful. Hoping that this is clear. It's gotten rather late! By the way, I'm working on a MacBook (not Pro) 13" with OS 10.5 and NeoOffice 3.1.1.

I see there are a few apps such as cockpit and keyboard maestro that handle global hotkeys, however I would like to figure out a free solution. I have quicksilver but the mail plugin hardly cuts it for effectiveness and functionality. Basically I'd like to just have a hotkey (any available function keys after F12 for instance), that when I push it, it opens up a "New Mail" message for OSX Mail, without having to go to mail, hitting new, typing out message then hiding mail (it pops up along with new mail). I do a lot of programming and design and it would be great to do this as I send out like 50 emails a day.

I've been customizing my folders using the View Options window in each folder separately, and I was wondering if there was an application or script that would change my view options (font sizes, icon size and spacing, background image, etc) for ALL folders, on a system-wide level.
I know there has to be a way to do it, but every time I try, I only change settings for the parent folder. Sorta 2 part question, I guess... How do I change the text underneath "Macintosh HD" such as "500GB, 457GB free." I know it's a string that can be changed, but I've forgotten where it's located.

We have several mac G4's running tiger.
They are setup to connect to an AD server using iHook.
I also have an xserver, but i'm not sure exactly what its configured to do, as i've only recently taken over from the previous network admin.
I can't work out how to set the global proxy settings that will affect all of my users. Is this a setting thats applied via the xserver, or is it something thats been manually configured locally?
How would i go about changing the global proxy settings, so that any user that logs in receives the same proxy settings?

I'm looking for an app of some kind that lets me control iTunes playback (play, pause, skip a song) from outside of iTunes. I've tried SizzlingKeys, which works great, but it doesn't work at all in games, which is the reason I downloaded it in the first place.

I have a OD domain that I've been adding systems too, and I've just about got it dialed in. Now I'd like to enable a global password policy, and I'm curious what actually happens when I flip the switch in Server Admin > Open Directory > Settings > Policies > Passwords? If I set a "reset every 90 days" option, is that from the time the policy is enabled, or from the time the user account was created? If I set a "must have one letter" or "numeric character", etc...and the user doesn't currently have a password that matches this criteria, will they be forced to set a new password immediately, or the next time one is initiated? Basically what I'm trying to figure out is how many support tickets I'm going to have, and (almost more importantly) when. For myself and several others at our organization, Mail.app started crashing a couple of days ago whenever a message is opened and the sender's email address is in our Exchange Global Address Book. The question then is, how does Mail display or look up those addresses differently in the message reading window/pane rather than "external" email addresses?Â

When I unplug the power cord from my MacBook (unibody - late 2008), the battery icon in Mac OS X stops updating it's level and the icon does not change. The menu says that it is running on power adapter even when it is unplugged and that the computer is not charging. The hardware battery indicator continues to show the correct battery level. Normally I should get a warning when the battery is about to die (running on emergency power) but I don't, instead it just runs out of battery and shuts down.

Excluding sitting outside in the sun or in very dark rooms, what level do you usually keep your MBA brightness level at and what kind of battery life do you get? I've got mine set to about 65%, haven't used it enough to know what kind of life I get.

I have a brand new MacBook ( < 1 month old ). I usually leave it plugged in and sleeping on my desk, and open it up to use it. After about a day of this, it will still say the battery is fully charged, and the light on the MagSafe is green, but the batter display shows 99% (or 98%, 97%, 96%). If I unplug it and use it for a bit, and the plug it in again, the battery will charge back up to 100% (and then the whole process will begin again). I love my MacBook, and want to make sure this behavior is normal.

I dont want to sound too sensitive but sometimes it looks almost too bright even on min settings.

The volume level for the built-in speakers is remembered across boots, but it is not remembered for headphones.
I.e. Whenever I plug in the headphones after a boot, the volume level sets itself to 50% - too loud for my ears and possibly damaging to the headphones.
Anybody know of a way to change this behavior? - To set an initial volume level for headphones?
I have OSX 10.5.6.
