OS X :: Global Open Finder Window Shortcut Key Combo?
Jan 26, 2008
Does OS X have a global Open a Finder window shortcut key combo? I've looked but haven't found anything. Looking for something similar to Windows 'Flag + e' to open Explorer.

OS 10.9.3. This morning the Finder keyboard shortcut Command-W stopped closing windows and instead opened a folder burried fairly deeply in my Home folder. I moved that folder and managed to get Command-W to stop opening it, but it will still NOT close a window in Finder. Nor will it close windows in applications. What does happne is that the frame of the window flashes (but it remains open).

Sometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.Â
Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

quick question. How do I set global finder settings? I like my finder windows to be sorted by kind, that way they are alphabetical but folders and files arent mixed in the list. I know I can use "show view options" to do this, but I have to do that for each folder seperately. How do I access the global settings? Google, search here, and OSX search haven't found anything.

I've been customizing my folders using the View Options window in each folder separately, and I was wondering if there was an application or script that would change my view options (font sizes, icon size and spacing, background image, etc) for ALL folders, on a system-wide level.
I know there has to be a way to do it, but every time I try, I only change settings for the parent folder. Sorta 2 part question, I guess... How do I change the text underneath "Macintosh HD" such as "500GB, 457GB free." I know it's a string that can be changed, but I've forgotten where it's located.

It has been bothering me for some time that when I open the Finder window, it opens pretty small and I either need to re-adjust it or scroll to find the folder. Is there a way to set it so that the Finder Window opens to a set amount of space?

Have a 3 1/2 year old imac with OS 10.5.6 and love it; use it tons.
I was adding some music to my idisk's public folder when the copying process froze;got stuck. The little spinning disc would not go away.
I closed down all other applications. My finder window was frozen with that disc, and could not force quit it, even though tried several techniques to do so. I finally turned off the computer manually.
When I turned my imac back on, the finder window was gone. I cannot open a finder window from the finder image on my dock.
My word documents, Safari, email all work, but my desktop is blank and I cannot open any finder window.
I think that it must have been something that the idisk caused.

Clicking folders to view the contents always results in a new window opening. This is very frustrating when trying to view a deep path file. I've already gone to Finder Options and made sure "Always open folders in new window" is not selected.
I repaired the disk permissions using Onyx and MainMenu but the problem still occurs.

I've got this problem that I need to try and solve for a client at work. They've got us to design a sort of media player application in Flash that allows the user to select any of their project videos to watch.
Now, the problem. They want this application to be distributed on a USB stick. They also want the application to automatically run when the USB is plugged in. Now, on Windows machines, this is easy enough. My problem is that I have no idea how to do this on a Mac.
I'm aware that Macs don't have the same AutoRun capabilities as Windows does. What I'm wondering, in the absence of being able to run the application automatically, is it possible to have Finder automatically open up a new window to the directory where the app is stored? Or, better yet, is it possible for Finder to automatically open up some sort of customized window (similar to the ones that pop up when you run an installer package), that just provides a shortcut to the application?
Obviously I need the solution to be common across multiple computers (so any solution that involves changing system settings or the like isn't really useful for me).
Is what I'm trying to do even possible? My knowledge is limited on the matter. I'm actually a video editor. Don't ask me why I've been put in charge of doing this, because I'm sort of wondering that myself.

I usually have several desktops open, and want to have a separate Finder window open in whichever desktop I happen to be working in. But it always opens in a desktop where it's always running. Then I have to go get it and put it where I want it.Â
Is there a key combination that lets me override that default (if that's what it is) and let's me open it where I want it?Â

Hi, I just got a new Macbook for xmas. Turned it on today for first time and downloaded Google Earth. I somehow dragged it into the Macintosh Hard Drive. Now when I click on the Macintosh HD icon, and the window opens up, I see the Google Earth icon to the left of the search box. When the arrow hovers over it, it shows the path to where the app is saved. If I click it, it opens the application. Its also in the Applications subfolder. I want to keep the program but how do I get it off the top of the HD window?

I need to get the App Store working so that I can re-install a Lion upgrade that I already purchased before. I had to replace my HD and now with 10.6.8, the App Store will not open.I have installed the 10.6.8 Combo Update and then done the other software updates through the System Preferences. This still comes up when I try to open App Store: "App store cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure App Store works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple." Does anyone know of a keyboard shortcut to go to the Login Window (fast user switching) like the Win+L combination for Windows XP?
Or perhaps a keyboard shortcut to lock the machine, like CTRL+ALT+DEL for Windows 2000/XP?
I've been searching for what seems like hours, and I can't find anything.

Wasn't this an option previous to 10.7.4? It doesn't work now. When clicking the Finder icon in the Dock, a new Finder window would open? I know about Finder prefs - General - Always open folders in new window but this isn't what I mean.I'd have a Finder window open then want to copy/move something so I clicked on the Finder icon in the dock to get a new window.Every time I clicked the Dock icon, I'd get a new Finder window.

So this is a new thing that started happening, and has got me stumped. When I hit Apple key+N in Safari, a new browser window will open, I will be switched to the Finder, and a new window in the Finder will open up. This new window in the Finder is the Computer window, the one listing the HD, the network icon, and any attached disks. It is not the same window I would get by hitting Apple+N while in the Finder. Only seems to do this while in Safari.

I have a MacBook Pro Late 2011 with built in US keyboard.Â
However I mainly typing using an external fullsize Apple Japanese Keyboard that I perchased from the Japan Apple Store.Â
One issue I'm having is switching betwen windows in the same program.Â
On US keyboards, the command is COMMAND + `Â
However this does not work on the Japanese model, as the ` key is actually on the same key as @, and requires pressing shift, breaking the shortcut.Â
Does anyone know the Japanese shortcut to change between windows in the same program?

I have a mechanical fault with my combo drive (cdrw/dvd) in my Powerbook 12" 1.5 GHz running Leopard which makes it noisy even when there is no disk in there. Is it possible to disable the device by removing it from the device tree in Open Firmware before OS X boots? It sounds like the drive is checking for a disk. I am sure there is not a disk in there as it still accepts and ejects other disks. If it were to be removed from the device tree would this likely solve the problem, or would the power cable to the drive have to be physically disconnected?
