Wondering if anyone knows what the security policy and process is that is followed by Apple when a damaged hard disk is replaced by Apple. Is the disk destroyed, or demagnetized. How do we know that the data on the disk is will not be accessed and copied anywhere? Is there a stated policy document available somewhere in the Apple Store that discusses this?
View 3 RepliesOver the christmas holidays I decided to re-install my good old PowerPC Mac mini. Over this procedure by accident I attached the power cable from the Mac mini C2D (2007 model) to the PPC mini. Suddenly I noticed a hard humming noise coming from inside the Mac mini that didn't vanished after some shutdowns. I opened the Mac mini and noticed that the noise was coming from the fan. I cleaned it as good as possible but the noise ist still there. All other components are acting quite usual. But the fan is still making this newly humming noise.
So I think I have damaged the fan somehow and now I'm looking for a suitable replacement. Maybe you have any idea which fan's are good and silent?
I've connected my new Iomega Minimax with a firewire cable directly to my iMAc but nothing appears on my desktop.

I am replacing a MacBook Pro HD with a Seagate Momentus 500gb HD. The Apple one is reconized but semi corrupted, the Seagate one isn't even reconized. The onl difference between the two that I notice is the side slot on the far right of the Seasgate. Do I need a differenct type of replacement HD or could it be the HD cord? the one on the left is the Seagate

Hello everyone! Hope I can get some great advice re: Apple Care and my MBP. Here are the basics.
Bought 2010 MBP brand new in June from Apple's site and also have Apple Care extended warranty. Since the beginning it's been plagued with kernel panics, gray screen of death, and lots of buggy behavior and app crashes. Have made two Genius Bar visits.
First they said it was a RAM problem and replaced that. MBP still didn't work right. Next they said it was a logic board problem and replaced that. MBP still doesn't work right! I've called customer support, they said to do OSX re-install and gave me a case ID #. Did that, MBP still has all the problems listed above.
I have my third Genius Bar appointment this week. At this point I think most people would conclude I've got a lemon MBP. So, my question is, what are some tips or recommendations on what I need to say/do to get Apple to replace with a new MBP? I'm tired of going back for repairs to this already frankenstein machine and believe that if they could have fixed it by now, it would be working fine. Any thoughts? Thanks!
I took my Late 2007 Macbook to the Apple Store to have the screen checked out (there were random burn marks on the screen). They sent it out for repair and when I got it back I noticed the screen was awesomely bright!
Is there anyway to see if they used an LED backlight screen as the replacement? System profiler didn't tell me much.
Apple replace my 2007 (June) MBP with the version just prior to this last update (June 2009 model) on April 7. Any chance Apple would swap me with the brand new MBP or am I just S.O.L. I have heard here of people purchasing MBP (because they were fed up with waiting) a week or two before the updates became public and Apple happily swapped them with the newest version

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've noticed, that on some of my unibody's macbook pro keys are feeling as if they are wearing out. For example, if i press on the "S" key for a long time, push it up and back, I can feel it squeeck or scratch. The keys do work, but this just gets me concerned if it is beginning to get damaged. Is this normal? Also, can the keyboard get damaged if someone pushes a key too hard?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI had an issue with the 9600m GT Graphics card a few weeks ago where the graphics card wouldn't display anything when plugged into an external monitor. The apple store checked it out and said the logic board was faulty and that it would need to be replaced under warranty. (Late 2008 15" macbook pro).
When I received the laptop back, they not only replaced the logic board, but they also replaced the SSD with a 250gb 5400rpm hard drive. I called in and, after being upgraded to the top level supervisor, he said that all of the hard drives being replaced were sent to be refurbished or recycled and that my hard drive had a fault in it so they replaced it. He says that they restore it to the apple original condition and originally they sold it with a 250gb hard drive in it so that's what they replaced it with. Their policy is that only if they replace aftermarket ram with apple ram will they return the aftermarket parts back to you. This repair was conducted yesterday, the 15th of January by apple Tech ID #612525.
I don't expect to get my data back, but if anyone has any idea on how I can get my hard drive back, I'd be willing to reward $100. A new Intel SSD X25-M G2 would be around 250 so I wouldn't want to do that.
I've been on the phone all day with the apple support so I am very frustrated right now.
I have a 15" quad i7 Macbook Pro purchased in November of 2011 with Apple Care. One thing I noticed about my MBP was that it had a noticably brighter display and backlight than my roommates older Core 2 Duo 15" MBP. In March of 2012, I had the displayed replaced by Apple Care because of a blotch that appeared on the screen over time.Â
Since then, I noticed that certain YouTube videos I used to enjoy seemed dimmer, darker, and a bit more contrasted than they used to, and the display doesn't seem as bright as it used. Before the replacement, I could only tolerate a brightness setting of 70%, now I use 100% in the dark with no problem. Also earlier today, my friend brought over his polycarbonate unibody Macbook; when he turned it on, with a room lamp on, it was noticably brighter than mine, his 80% was my 100%.Â
I also read that a Macbook isn't supposed to have a brighter display than the MBP. I've read unofficial reports that the older Core 2 Duo's had slightly less powerful displays, and that Apple uses many different brands that are compatible with the MPB. Is it possible the Apple Store replaced my display with a more inferior but compatible type? Or could I just have another defective display? I'm planning on returning to the Apple Store to have this work done, it's just that I want a stronger case than "it seems a little darker than before".

And yes of course I am one of those idiots who keep everything on it but does not back it up. So some questions: How screwed am I? Are these data retrieval companys you see advertised any good? After trying to boot in safe mode and several other start-up options, I booted from an OSX install disk and found that the drive wasn't appearing in the Disk Utility - this, and the fact that I had been running it at very high capacity for far too long is what led me to assume it was utterly dead.So I ordered a new drive, a WD Scorpio Blue 500GB, and installed it today. Again booting from the OSX install disk, I went to the disk utility (thinking I would format the drive before installing the OS), but new drive wasn't there either.Assuming I installed the new drive correctly (it was pretty straightforward), this is leading me to assume that I was wrong with my diagnosis.

How do I reinstall Mac OS X after the hard drive has been replaced? I had an authorized Apple repair facility replace the hard drive on my IMac when the original drive died. I have the Mac OS X Install DVD which says "To start up from Mac OS X, hold down the C key as the computer starts up." I've tried that and all I get is a folder icon with a question mark on it. I'm guessing that's because I don't have the the OS installed to start from. How do I get the OS X installed?

They both spin and click several times and then stop. The disk utility does not see them. Power cycling the disks does not help.

My 2009 mac-mini started acting up about 2 months ago.The symptoms were:
-- slow response
-- freezing for no apparent reason the going again
-- failure to shutdown forcing use of the power button
-- long boot times
-- finder would freeze and could not be relaunched
-- iTunes would not quit
-- trying to view files on external drives may take an excessive time
I tried "everything" to try to resolve the problem.None of this worked:
-- zapped the parameter ram
-- cleared disk permissions
-- repaired disks
-- booted to safe mode
-- ran fsck
-- reinstalled Snow Leopard
There were several articles that discussed how to "reliably restart the finder". urls....Although none of the suggestions in the article or in the discussion provided any relief, I was finally convinced that I needed to disconnect all of my external drives and reboot.It appears that we have finally discovered the culprit.I have 4 external drives:
-Seagate GoFlex 3TB USB
-Seagate GoFlex 2TB USB
-Seagate 1.5TB Firewire
Toshiba 0.5TB USB (Used for Carbon Copy Clone of the internal drive)Booting from this drive did not change the problem.With all of them removed my computer worked just fine.Adding back the 3TB USB and the 1.5TB Firewire, I still have a working system.Since discovery of this error, I've found several articles complaining that this bug has been around long enough that it should have been fixed by now.Apparently Apple points fingers at the disk drive maker and the drive makers point back at Apple.Refering back to the article above, (the HTTP link), these same symptoms seem to appear because of some rogue applications.It -may- be that because I am using Crashplan 3.2.1 to backup this "broken" disk to another locally attached disk, that Crashplan is the "rogue" application.However, I've been using Crashplan for nearly 3 years and have found it to be a great app -- much more reliable than Time Machine (which proved to be nearly worthless when my MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard died and was replaced with a MacBook Pro running Lion.

I'm both elated and pissy at the same time. Something happened to my mac when I was traveling, be it a latent hardware flaw, damage, or some other random act, and my mac OSX partition just, well, died. Unbootable, disk utility spends over a day trying to fix the boot record. The Bootcamp windows partition is fritzy, but it at least mounts and periodically can be booted from. I bought an external usb hard drive, loaded SL onto that, and have my mac back up and running again, but no data to speak of. So based on numerous recommendations, I paid good money to purchase Disk Warrior 4. Nothing, just told me the Macintosh HD partition on the hard drive was damaged, but that bootcamp could still be read.

After replacing the first one due to a surprisingly noisy hard drive, and the replacement itself being returned due to having a massive hardware failure, I'm still not using the iMac I ordered over a month ago. Funny thing is, the second iMac had the same rumbling hard drive as the first which I was prepared to put up with. With no more than a few days of usage, it just stopped working. It's been over a week since the second was returned and the new one hasn't been shipped!

This old unit needed a bigger hard drive, so a friend gave me a Hitachi 60 GB drive he didn't need and I installed it. He told me that it was formatted for MS-DOS and that I would need to reformat it for Mac OS. I'm pretty sure that I did accomplish that using Disk Utilities in the Installer program.
I put a OS 10.4 install disk in and tried to boot from it. My problem is I'm getting a screen alert that says, "This software cannot be loaded on this computer." I can either restart (what good is that?) or go to "Startup Disk" where I choose the install disk (or Network Startup) and click on Restart. Then I choose English as the main language and bang! - right back to the wonderful, "This software cannot be loaded on this computer."
I upgraded my hard drive from a 500 GB hard drive to a 1TB hard drive in my MacBook Pro, I reinstalled Lion and restored the data from the other hard drive. Now when I try to login to my account, it's as though my password is incorrect. I'm certain it's correct.
How do I use my Apple ID to reset my password? How do I access my account?

I'm about to get a Mac Mini Server for audio, video, and graphic production, in addition to everyday productivity use. If in the same situation, which would you prefer?
1) to stripe (Raid 0) the two internal disks, or
2) use one as the install/OS disk and the other as the data/scratch disk?
(...assuming you have a 1TB external backup drive, and find FW800 to be much slower than internal SATA for a data/scratch disk).
I just replaced my hard drive today. I booted it up and went to disk utilities to format it and all of that. When I finished I went to restore system from back up and plugged in my external hard drive and the computer said there was no history of back up from Time Machine. This was strange because before I formated the hard drive and tried to restore the information, it recognized that there was back up information. I decided I would re-install the os and try again.
View 6 Replies View RelatedAbout a week ago, my MacBook Pro started freezing and getting the spinning wheel. When this happens, the computer is unresponsive. So, I will turn it off and on reboot, but all I get is the question mark folder. The weird thing is that sometime it will boot right up, but sometimes it wont. Even when it does boot, it only works for about 5 minutes, and then the spinning wheel occurs again. So, I bought a new hard drive, installed it and reinstalled the operating system.

When I tried the application to burn the burn folder, I got a message to insert a blank disk. I tried using the Disk Utility, but when I try to select the volume Superdrive, the option is dimmed. How do I eject the blank disk from my Superdrive? I tried restarting but that did not eject it.
