I did a software update for Safari to 5.1.5. I rebooted the system as required. Now neither the firewire external drive, nor the USB external drive are mounted.Â
They both spin and click several times and then stop. The disk utility does not see them. Power cycling the disks does not help.

My 2009 mac-mini started acting up about 2 months ago.The symptoms were:
-- slow response
-- freezing for no apparent reason the going again
-- failure to shutdown forcing use of the power button
-- long boot times
-- finder would freeze and could not be relaunched
-- iTunes would not quit
-- trying to view files on external drives may take an excessive time
I tried "everything" to try to resolve the problem.None of this worked:
-- zapped the parameter ram
-- cleared disk permissions
-- repaired disks
-- booted to safe mode
-- ran fsck
-- reinstalled Snow Leopard
There were several articles that discussed how to "reliably restart the finder". urls....Although none of the suggestions in the article or in the discussion provided any relief, I was finally convinced that I needed to disconnect all of my external drives and reboot.It appears that we have finally discovered the culprit.I have 4 external drives:
-Seagate GoFlex 3TB USB
-Seagate GoFlex 2TB USB
-Seagate 1.5TB Firewire
Toshiba 0.5TB USB (Used for Carbon Copy Clone of the internal drive)Booting from this drive did not change the problem.With all of them removed my computer worked just fine.Adding back the 3TB USB and the 1.5TB Firewire, I still have a working system.Since discovery of this error, I've found several articles complaining that this bug has been around long enough that it should have been fixed by now.Apparently Apple points fingers at the disk drive maker and the drive makers point back at Apple.Refering back to the article above, (the HTTP link), these same symptoms seem to appear because of some rogue applications.It -may- be that because I am using Crashplan 3.2.1 to backup this "broken" disk to another locally attached disk, that Crashplan is the "rogue" application.However, I've been using Crashplan for nearly 3 years and have found it to be a great app -- much more reliable than Time Machine (which proved to be nearly worthless when my MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard died and was replaced with a MacBook Pro running Lion.

i just downloaded a torrent and it contained a bunch of toast files, all the other files mounted fine but one file says that it contains no mountable file systems...it just turns out that this is the most important file of the bunch
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an intel mac (macbook) with a fresh (not upgraded) copy of Leo. Apparently this does matter, as Tiger would have been able to mount the disk with no problem so I suspect that ability remains in the computer when upgraded (only a suspicion). I have been trying for 3 days to get my Canon solutions disk (14.3) to mount in Leopard. When I insert it, it just spits back out after spinning up.
Canon support had no idea what to do, and apple wasn't giving me any help since it is a third party app, they simply sent me the direction of canon for a fix.
Thankfully I figured out a solution. This should work for all who have disks that will not mount and spit back out. As a last resort right before I pulled my hair out I decided to try and force the disk to mount by holding the shift key while inserting the Canon Solutions disk. IT WORKED!
Do not let go of that shift key until the disk is mounted completely and the installer icon is on the desktop. Once it is mounted you are good to go and it installs with no problem.
I hope this information can help some of you having this issue.
My Mac Pro ("Cyrus") has two 1 TB hard disks. When I reboot, only the first of those disks (also named "Cyrus"), the one with the system and home directories, mounts on the desktop. The second disk ("Virtual", need a better name, any ideas?) does not appear in /Volumes and doesn't work until I mount it manually in Disk Utility. This behaviour is seen consistently, i.e. after every reboot. How can I convince Cyrus to mount both disks?

The MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 can't mount disks, both CD and DVD, about 90 percent of the time. I've tried resetting the PRAM, but I don't know if it's related to this.
Whenever we upgrade the Mini to an iMac, I have this vision of getting a vertical mount to hang our 20" Cinema Display under the counter in the "bill paying/desk area" of our kitchen. The issue I have is that I'm looking for something that will hang over the back of the display that you can hold the Mini in that does not take up the screws needed for the mount.
I'm thining of bending some Lexan to fit it in (see picture) unless anyone knows of something similar already out there to purchase.
Then I can just get a wireless keyboard/mouse and it will be a clutter-free area.
Purchased a used macbook aluminum did not come with disks but i have the discs of my mac mini 2010 aluminum.I tried erasing and installing but it did not work.It says i cannot mac osx on this computer.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried variety of CD-R's (Verbatim, Memolex, Maxell, Office Deipot brand, etc) . Sometimes Memolex works with very low speed (2X), but most of times fails with other brands.
What I saw is that iTunes prepared songs successfully but after start burning progress bar didn't move at all (for tens of minutes) and looked waiting for response from CD-R devices.Â
I tried with 2 machines below.
1. Mac mini (Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz, 1GB memory) with PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06RS: (replaced from factory part), OS 10.5.8
2. Macbook (Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz, 2GB memory) with HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS21N (LG?) (Apple shipping device), OS10.5.8Â

1) to stripe (Raid 0) the two internal disks, or
2) use one as the install/OS disk and the other as the data/scratch disk?
(...assuming you have a 1TB external backup drive, and find FW800 to be much slower than internal SATA for a data/scratch disk).
Wondering if anyone knows what the security policy and process is that is followed by Apple when a damaged hard disk is replaced by Apple. Is the disk destroyed, or demagnetized. How do we know that the data on the disk is will not be accessed and copied anywhere? Is there a stated policy document available somewhere in the Apple Store that discusses this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy headphone jack fails intermittently. I have speakers hooked up to it and sometimes sound will not play through the speakers. Even if I disconnect the speakers and plug in headphone sound does still not play through the headphones. I have even tried restarting and that does not work. In my system preferences (In Sound Panel) it shows that something is connected to the headphone jack. I have already had the entire logic board replaced once (under warranty) and that seemed to fix the problem for a couple months. If I wait about a day or less magically the speakers start working again. This has happend twice. Has anyone else had this problem? I have about 2 weeks left on my warranty. It almost seems like it is a software problem now, but I am not sure.

Suddenly the networking functionality has stopped working and the diagnostics fails to fix it. It shows all green lights apart from Internet and Server which both show as FAILED.Â
My router is operational and does assign the Mac Mini the correct IP address (confirmed by the Mac Mini and the Router). All other devices on the network work and can access the internet as usual. Â
I have tried everything that I can think of but just can't get it working again. Â
The same symptoms occur for both the wired ethernet and the wireless connection with the build-in airport.Â

I was trying to burn a new cd and before I used the application I had inserted a blank disk which my computer didn't recognize. When I tried the application to burn the burn folder, I got a message to insert a blank disk. I tried using the Disk Utility, but when I try to select the volume Superdrive, the option is dimmed. How do I eject the blank disk from my Superdrive? I tried restarting but that did not eject it.

I have a Mac mini (~2008) running Snow Leopard. I updated my software today (haven't done this in probably several months) and immediately afterword, my Apple aluminum wired keyboard no longer responds. (The mouse when attached through the keyboard also no longer responds.) However, the keyboard still functions just fine on a separate MacBook Pro that I have, it just won't work on the Mac Mini. (I tried different USB ports with no difference.)
I wasn't smart enough to write down what upgrades actually occurred prior to my last update, but there were only 4 items (I think one was Safari, one was iTunes). If there are no better ideas, I guess I will have to try a system restore from Time Machine which predates my latest bad "update". I'd rather not have to go there if I don't have to.
The Mail Client on Mac OS 10.7.4 V5.2 1278 fails on send messages. The compsoe window reappears immediately after Send is selected. The mail message ends up in the outbox. This worked prior to may 1st. Some update has broken it.

I've not Time Machine'd in about 3 weeks. After working fine for several months, out of the blue I get this error. I think it was -61? "Get Info" said it was read only. I couldn't figure out how to make it write & read. Now, out of the blue, I can't even mount it.I'm at a loss. My iMac is on it's last legs and I'm playing with fire. View 16 Replies View RelatedI have 5 external USB disks on my little Mac Mini, and I've noted that if I don't access them for a time they spin down, and the next time I access them I have to wait for them to spin back up again. I don't care for that, and would rather they stayed spun up.
Is there some system setting or UNIX trick I can use to bring that about? Seems there should be?
i installed 10.6.3 on my 17" MacBook Pro (updating from 10.5.8). All my external disk drives which had all been visible to the system and accessible before the update no longer were visible to the OS. Not in the sidebar and not in the disk utility. After checking all connections etc. many reboots, resetting the pram i still am unable to see or access these disks. From there i updated to 10.6.8 but exactly the same results. i'm not sure where to go from here. i have 4 externals on 2 different usb routers and 1 external on a firewire router. I'm considering removing the routers and trying each drive separately and directly connected to the laptop.Â

It happens to me with my current iMac intel, which has 2 firewire drives connected to it (one 800 and one 400).
When the firewire drives randomly spin it, it sometimes makes my iMac stall a bit. Like the beach-ball will sometimes even come up, but otherwise it just like it freezes a split second while it's bringing the hard drive back up the speed.
Why does it do that, and is there anyway around it?
It makes using an external drive frustrating and hurts the beautiful mac experience.
I have 4GB of memory, very fast computer otherwise, so it's not that.
I had searched the forum for posts about VESA mounted minis and saw that some of you have your minis mounted, but I'm specifically looking for Monitor/TV mounted minis.
I live in an ancient house with tiny bedrooms, and I'd like to buy a mini for home theater/computing for my bedroom. It would be attached to the back of an LG23" TV/monitor.
For any of you that are using this method: Which brand of mount are you using (I was looking at the H Squared), and how do you like it? Is it stable? Does it make the monitor off balance?

View 3 Replies View RelatedA series of backup related problems have occurred: Upgraded to Lion and then TM failed to backup: "Error while copying to backup disk" (using Lacie d2 Quadra HD that has been performing well for 2 years). I also have a second Iomega MiniMaxHD with a carbon copy clone of my Snow Leopard mac on one partition and a second partition with other iphoto/.itunes/ document backup and now I cannot copy my iphoto library to this HD for a backup: " Operation could not be completed because the item "iphoto Library" is in use", even though all applications are off.
Tried multiple times and the transfer of the iphoto library always fails midway through. I have lost both my TM backup and my ability to backup to other drives because a new problem has arisen: every time I try to load an external HD I can't eject it: can't eject because error message says that the "Finder is using" the external HD and then I have to Force Eject, risking data loss.
I have so far tried: restart mac, reset PRAM, unplug/verify and repair disk multiple times for all of the external HDs as well as my Macintosh HD; I have erased the Lacie HD and reformatted it while rebooting from Lion Recovery HD and then TM still failed; I have also tried deleting from the Library my TM plist as well as my iphoto p.list. I even tried using a brand new Iomega Minimax HD and TM still failed

My Maxtor 500 external hard drive has suddenly stopped appearing on my desktop. My other external drives appear. I've tried hooking the drive to my MacBook Pro with the same results. The drive however, seems 'active'. The light on the front of the drive does its usual flashing routine when plugged into a new machine. I've never had a crashed drive before. Does it sound like this is what has happened, or does anyone have a clue as to what I should do?

I thought I might have to use Disk Utility to "zero" out data on the external hard drive but the message pops up with an estimated 24 hours to "zero" out all data on the external Hard drive. I just updated to iTunes 11.2.2 on my macMini following an update to OS X 10.9.3. I have my music library stored on an external 1TB firewire disk and some on a second gen iPod. The iPod music is accessable and will play but the music on the external disk, while showing up correctly in iTunes, will not play. I can't even play the music from within finder (no play icon on the music file icon in finder.) I can use the right click menu option to show a music item in iTunes in Finder and it knows right where it is so it seems itunes is fully aware of the libraries location on the external drive. Â
One additional point is that I also install Xcode 6 Beta which would not install with iTunes opened. I was wondering if the beta of Xcode 6 is at issue? If is what will be needed to backout that instalation? What changes does Xcode 6 do that affects iTunes in the first place? Maybe it isn't Xcode 6 but something else just not sure.
