MacBook Pro :: Comparison Between Replaced HD With Apple HD

May 8, 2012

I am replacing a MacBook Pro HD with a Seagate Momentus 500gb HD. The Apple one is reconized but semi corrupted, the Seagate one isn't even reconized. The onl difference between the two that I notice is the side slot on the far right of the Seasgate. Do I need a differenct type of replacement HD  or could it be the HD cord? the one on the left is the Seagate

MacBook Pro :: RAM & Logic Replaced, MBP Still Broken: Will Apple Give Me A New MBP?

Nov 2, 2010

Hello everyone! Hope I can get some great advice re: Apple Care and my MBP. Here are the basics.

Bought 2010 MBP brand new in June from Apple's site and also have Apple Care extended warranty. Since the beginning it's been plagued with kernel panics, gray screen of death, and lots of buggy behavior and app crashes. Have made two Genius Bar visits.

First they said it was a RAM problem and replaced that. MBP still didn't work right. Next they said it was a logic board problem and replaced that. MBP still doesn't work right! I've called customer support, they said to do OSX re-install and gave me a case ID #. Did that, MBP still has all the problems listed above.

I have my third Genius Bar appointment this week. At this point I think most people would conclude I've got a lemon MBP. So, my question is, what are some tips or recommendations on what I need to say/do to get Apple to replace with a new MBP? I'm tired of going back for repairs to this already frankenstein machine and believe that if they could have fixed it by now, it would be working fine. Any thoughts? Thanks!

MacBook :: Apple Replaced My MB Late 2007 Screen

Jun 12, 2009

I took my Late 2007 Macbook to the Apple Store to have the screen checked out (there were random burn marks on the screen). They sent it out for repair and when I got it back I noticed the screen was awesomely bright!

Is there anyway to see if they used an LED backlight screen as the replacement? System profiler didn't tell me much.

MacBook Pro :: Apple Replaced My System With The Previous MBP Two Weeks Ago?

Apr 17, 2010

Apple replace my 2007 (June) MBP with the version just prior to this last update (June 2009 model) on April 7. Any chance Apple would swap me with the brand new MBP or am I just S.O.L. I have heard here of people purchasing MBP (because they were fed up with waiting) a week or two before the updates became public and Apple happily swapped them with the newest version

MacBook Pro :: Apple Repair Took Intel X-25M SSD And Replaced With HDD 250gb 5400RPM.

Jan 16, 2010

I had an issue with the 9600m GT Graphics card a few weeks ago where the graphics card wouldn't display anything when plugged into an external monitor. The apple store checked it out and said the logic board was faulty and that it would need to be replaced under warranty. (Late 2008 15" macbook pro).

When I received the laptop back, they not only replaced the logic board, but they also replaced the SSD with a 250gb 5400rpm hard drive. I called in and, after being upgraded to the top level supervisor, he said that all of the hard drives being replaced were sent to be refurbished or recycled and that my hard drive had a fault in it so they replaced it. He says that they restore it to the apple original condition and originally they sold it with a 250gb hard drive in it so that's what they replaced it with. Their policy is that only if they replace aftermarket ram with apple ram will they return the aftermarket parts back to you. This repair was conducted yesterday, the 15th of January by apple Tech ID #612525.

I don't expect to get my data back, but if anyone has any idea on how I can get my hard drive back, I'd be willing to reward $100. A new Intel SSD X25-M G2 would be around 250 so I wouldn't want to do that.

I've been on the phone all day with the apple support so I am very frustrated right now.

MacBook Pro :: 15" Display Seems A Little Dimmer After Having It Replaced By Apple Care?

Jun 3, 2012

I have a 15" quad i7 Macbook Pro purchased in November of 2011 with Apple Care. One thing I noticed about my MBP was that it had a noticably brighter display and backlight than my roommates older Core 2 Duo 15" MBP. In March of 2012, I had the displayed replaced by Apple Care because of a blotch that appeared on the screen over time.

Since then, I noticed that certain YouTube videos I used to enjoy seemed dimmer, darker, and a bit more contrasted than they used to, and the display doesn't seem as bright as it used. Before the replacement, I could only tolerate a brightness setting of 70%, now I use 100% in the dark with no problem. Also earlier today, my friend brought over his polycarbonate unibody Macbook; when he turned it on, with a room lamp on, it was noticably brighter than mine, his 80% was my 100%.

I also read that a Macbook isn't supposed to have a brighter display than the MBP. I've read unofficial reports that the older Core 2 Duo's had slightly less powerful displays, and that Apple uses many different brands that are compatible with the MPB. Is it possible the Apple Store replaced my display with a more inferior but compatible type? Or could I just have another defective display? I'm planning on returning to the Apple Store to have this work done, it's just that I want a stronger case than "it seems a little darker than before".

Mac Mini :: What Is Done With Damaged Hard Disks When Replaced By Apple

Jun 29, 2012

Wondering if anyone knows what the security policy and process is that is followed by Apple when a damaged hard disk is replaced by Apple. Is the disk destroyed, or demagnetized. How do we know that the data on the disk is will not be accessed and copied anywhere? Is there a stated policy document available somewhere in the Apple Store that discusses this?

MacBook Pro :: Temperature Comparison Between The I5 2.4/2.53ghz And The 15" I7 2.66ghz

Oct 6, 2010

I know there's been plenty of discussion about how hot the new MBP's are running or not (I've been through all the threads, and really appreciated Scott666's posts abt his i7 MBP) but I still havent seen any exact head to head temperature comparison between the 15" i5 2.4/2.53ghz and the 15" i7 2.66ghz, with both running the same programs/being stressed equally while the readings are taken.

I know it's a hassle, but it's a huge investment for me and i'd ideally like the i7 as I edit video but can't always have access to a desk to prevent crispy fried legs I keep hearing sweeping statements like 'the i5 should run cooler' but no real comparison has been done...

MacBook Pro :: Humble Comparison - I5 2.4Ghz High Resolution Antiglare Vs I7 2.66Ghz Glossy

May 8, 2010

Currently owing the top of the line i7, and after reading a lot about the antiglare and its high resolution I went to the Apple store (twice) to check and compare both screens. I spent around 2.5 h trying to make my mind, looking at different angles, playing movies, launching applications, etc. I was almost giving up in trying to find a solution for this when an apple store rep. talked to me. His suggestion was to look at the same picture on both computers at full screen. He said that for photos and prints, the antiglare image will be closer to what you get in the prints (with out any extra monitor calibration off course). When I started looking at the pictures very closely and with detail, I could see that the clarity and quality of the same picture was better and "crispier" on the antiglare than on the stock glossy resolution. That was my turn point and made my decision on the antiglare high res. There are other reasons why I wanted the antiglare, like the reflections I am getting in my home; but really the point was made once I looked at the clarity of the pictures in the high res screen compared with the standard res.

One point I noticed in the high res screen was that the only application where I could say the fonts were really small and maybe uncomfortable for me was on iWork applications. The icons for the format bar were really small. But in Office, everything seem OK for my eyes (I need glasses for long distance sight). I can say that by looking at both machines at home, the glossy colors look more vivid, and that the viewing angles are better than the antiglare which looks a little bit like washed off to me. But still, prefer not to have reflections and the crispier pictures.................

I was wondering if engadget has compared the display of the new mb to that of its older shiny sister (13" mbp)?

IMO, apple has had a tradition of skimping a bit on it's consumer laptop displays, and I was wondering if that is still the case.

MacBook Pro :: HDD Replaced Now Freezing

May 1, 2012

I have a macbook pro 13 inch purchased in 2009.  My HDD died so I took it to an Apple dealer and they replaced it and upgraded me to 10.6.8, when I took it home I found that some of the applications I had received for free were now missing, and after a few days I was having the same problems with my HDD (folder with ? mark appearing)  so I took it back. They told me that I had a virus?  They then gave me the apps that had been missing and upgraded me again to 10.7.3 however it is still freezing regardless of whether I am on the internet so its not my connection. I also went to open itunes and it told me it could not find a folder and to choose a location.  When I chose Music - itunes - it states I can't and to choose another folder.

OS X :: MacBook Pro Won't Turn On - Replaced Battery

Dec 27, 2009

I just got my MacBook pro returned 4 days ago after the hard drive was replaced because the brightness was on minimum and had to be reboot 15 times so it could be changed. I asked apple to replace my battery because it had 1 minute battery life and it had 47 cycles but they didn't. My mac didn't have enough power to start speakers so I rebooted but my mac went into sleep mode and wouldn't come out. I had to force shut down. I tried turning it on but it wouldn't turn on, I tried taking out battery etc and pressed power button 5 secs but nothing changed.

I live 100 miles away from apple repair. I wrote this on my iPod touch. I took it to apple repair and it turned on. I had been using a 65 watt charging cable for a MacBook, I need a 85 watt charging cable. It was 100 miles away and has been posted to me today. apple told me that a MacBook pro requires 80 watt charging cable, and 65 watt can be bad for the mac and will only work if the battery isn't dead. my battery was dead when I tried to turn it on.

MacBook Pro :: Just Replaced The Thermal Paste In My MBP?

Jul 16, 2010

Well my MBP seems to have been running a tad bit warm. Took it apart and this is why. I've read all over the internet that Apple always seems to do a crappy job with applying way too much thermal paste to their processors/GPUs.

Pictures below confirms this and now my MBP is running 10-15*F cooler. Fans stays at a constant 1000RPMs. I haven't used SMC Fan Control yet to increase them as now I don't have to but maybe I will increase 500RPMs or so but I like how quiet it is now .

Cleaned them off with q-tips and 90% alcohol and applied Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound.

Yuck what a crappy and sloppy job. I removed chunks of the old stuff.

All clean now. Look how shiny them chips are

MacBook Pro :: Three Beeps On Startup Even After RAM Replaced?

Feb 27, 2012

I'm working on a Macbook pro 15 A1278 for a friend. They were given the computer by someone who didn't want it.  My friend did not have the password to get into the machine and no original system disc. I thought this was going to be an easy case of erase-and-install. So I attempted to boot from my own Snow Leopard DVD, then I started getting three beep errors. Now I can't get as far as the password screen any more. Computer starts with normal chimes, then when it gets to the grey screen with the Apple, I get the "three beeps". Bought new ram, put it in, reseated it a bunch of times, still three beeps every time.Attempting to restart using the system DVD by holding the C key, same problem. DVD spins up but then three beeps. Fired the machine up as a target disk and ran disk utility via remote control from another machine, we''ll call that one "machine B". Hard drive checks out with no errors and is formatted in Extended Journaled. Did a clean system install from machine B (while still in target disk mode). System install was a success and was able to restart machine B successfully from the hard drive of the faulty machine.
