View 19 Replies View RelatedI've been clearing out my loft, and found my old Macintosh Plus, keyboad, mouse and software from my student days. If still powers up and works!Anyway, I also found a disk box of some 24 * 3.5" 800k floppies of my old work, dissertation, and things, and would really like to get these onto a current machine as well as Mac Project and MacWrite, MacPaint etc. to read them.I've an old 12" G4 Powerbook which I rebuilt with 10.4.11 so it runs Classic, but I now need someway of getting the files off the 3.5" floppies. The Mac+ has no ethernet only the old Appletalk. I tried my local Mac Store who wanted to sell me a nice new USB floppy drive which was PC compatible. Now I know the old SuperDrives could read these old 800Kb disks but will a modern drive read them as well? The Mac Expert in store didn't have a clue, and to be frank it didn't look like he was even born when these were around.any other suggestions on transferring these files?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Imac at work, and it is agonizingly slow. Plus Photoshop CS2 is breaking up images so they are unworkable and is corrupting them. The hard drive says there is 202 GB available so -- is this a scratch disk problem and if so, why isn't 200 G enough? Does anyone have any help as to what I can do to speed this up? I have ordered (or are ordering at some point) another stick of RAM - but I am quite sure the problem is not going to be completely solved with that.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI got iMac on my office. There is network issue on my iMac Desktop. When my computer remains idle for long time (sleep) and wakes up again, I can ping into the same network device (say 192.168.0.0 network) but I am not able to ping into other sub net (say 10.2.0.0, printer network).
Restarting iMAc resolves the problem or unplugging the cable and connect to some other Laptops and connect back to iMAc works again (I mean I can access other networks again). I turned of auto-negotiation and tried renew DHCP Address but it still doesn't solve my problem. Restarting the computer and unplugging the cable and plug-in back is not a solution for me.
When I download a program it downloads into my download folder but when I try to open it it goes straight to disc utility. How can I change this.

I need to change the monitor setting to MIRROR MODE which I believe is located in System Preferences but I cannot see anything with the current limited display.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried the following to make a bootable floppy image and it would not even read in a virtual machine. I have Oracle Virtualbox. I am using a Mac Mini 2011 with 4GB of RAM. I have tried making a blank floppy and copying to it by dragging and using the Terminal, but neither works. Here are the cmds I used:Â
dd if=/dev/zero bs=1024 count=1440>floppy.imgÂ
Then I mounted and erased the image file in Disk Utility.Â
cp -Rpv /Volumes/Untitled/ /Volumes/UNTITLED 1/Â
The above command copied all the files from the floppy to the image but the image wouldn't read on the virtual machine.Â

I am in the process of pulling the data off of my collection of floppy disks. A lot of them are the really ancient 800K kind so I am using a Mac Classic II running System 7.0.1 to access them. The process is going well but occasionally I've run across a PC formatted floppy that the Mac won't read. It just says: This disk is not a Macintosh diskette. Do you want to Initialize it? So how do I give my Classic the ability to access these PC format diskettes?

My screen has become extremely floppy and it is pretty difficult to get it to stay up; if it does manage to do so it is at a pretty good slope. it's old and I have been tough on it, but was wondering how I would go about fixing this to the best of my ability? or. is this the kind of thing I have to take in for repairs?

It hung tonight while trying to burn a CD using Toast 9, which I could not even Force Quit. I closed it down using the Power button but when I rebooted it wont play, burn or recognise any media in the CD/DVD Drive! I have had the original replaced a year ago. Has it died or is it a more complicated software or OSX problem? I am running Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L30) Kernel Version:Darwin 9.8.0 on my Mac. The DVD drive has been making some strange whirring noises occasionally as I ripped CDs to my hard drive.
My son is having a BIG problem with his Mac Mini. His Mini has a 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, memory of 3GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and runs Mac OS X Version 10.6.3. He has Time Machine and also a 1.5TB desktop hard drive. From time to time, he has been getting pop-up warnings that his internal hard drive was about to become full. He would then do some deleting and things would be fine until the next pop-up. Last week, after watching some videos on Utube, he tried to open iTunes and, instead of a pop-up, got an error message with some numbers (which he didn't write down). It began the usual routine, starting with a white screen with the apple logo in the center and the loading circle spinning right below it. After that, it normally goes to a light blue screen and then loads the desktop, but this time (and ever since) it stopped at the blue screen, empty except for the message "Hard Drive Full, Please Delete Data".
Apparently the screensaver still works, but not much else -- like the Finder. He said that he did get something to appear on the top bar by taking the batteries out of his Apple Bluetooth keyboard, bringing up the "Bluetooth Setup Assistant", but once a wired keyboard is plugged in, everything on the top bar disappears (since the Mac sees a keyboard). He was going to do a "restore" and, in preparation, thought he had done a successful back-up to his external hard drive using the Time Machine feature. However, when he checked the Time Machine under System Preferences it said that the external HD had nearly 1.5 TB unused (only a couple hundred pictures or so on it) and the Time Machine was supposed to put about 70GB on there. So now he is concerned that he didn't/can't do a back-up.
Is it possible to disconnect the optical superdrive from my iBook G4 (which is dead but the superdrive still works) and install it in my iMac G5? (Superdrive here is dead)
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy old Mac, G4 tower running 10.4.11 died. I need to recover data from the hard drive. I put the drive in a disk drive enclosure via USB but my new Mac, Mac Pro Intel, 10.4.11 cannot read the drive. I get an error message, "this drive is not readable by this computer, eject, initialize". It sees the USB drive in disk utility but cannot see the data.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWithout warning my iMac [OS X Snow Leopard] popped up an alert saying that I should eject a drive before disconnecting it. I had done nothing to generate this error message. I clicked ok to close it and noticed my 4 month old, external 8T Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 was no longer visible in my drive directory. I also noticed this external unit was making a looped grinding noise as if it was trying to write without success. I figured one of the drives failed and took it to the mac doctor. Other than a few directory errors, everything appeared to be fine, so I paid the service fee, brought it home and plugged it in only to find the same prob - obviously it's something with my iMac. Before I go spending more service fees, I wondered if anyone here could point me toward a method of discovering what might be wrong. I ran disk utility [verify and permissions] and fixed some directory errors, but don't know how to look further. iMac was home networked with a PC [Windows] and a laptop [Windows]. I did notice something wacky with the PC, but its very old and I expect it to die any day. I was running the network through the PC, so I direct connected the iMac to the router and modem but no change: still cannot see the external drives. What other info do you need to make an educated guess for me?

The originals I burn to a DVD but the pictures I put on an external hard drive 1 tb so they are readily accessible. This is the first MAC I've ever had that does not have manual ejection for the disk drive.
What can I do short of ripping the cases apart?
I was trying to replace my internal hard drives and the 'Data Cable' seemed seriosuly hard to free, it seems I have tugged it too hard and broke the piece of plastic off surrounding the data connection on the hard drive, now all there is 7 copper(?) looking pins exposed.I can no longer seem to connect the Data Cable back to the hard drive.

My son's asked me to fix the CD drive on his G4 iMac. It very rarely opens when you press the 'eject' button. I'm wondering if it's just a build up of dust, so I was wondering if anyone's had experience of this, and how easy it is to access the drive.
