My son's asked me to fix the CD drive on his G4 iMac. It very rarely opens when you press the 'eject' button. I'm wondering if it's just a build up of dust, so I was wondering if anyone's had experience of this, and how easy it is to access the drive.

As a new IMac user (24 hours) I decided to copy my entire CD collection on to my computer. I now have a CD that is stuck in my IMac. It doesn't read/display at all, nor will it eject when I select this option from ITunes. Is there a way to manually eject the disc or another way that I may not be familiar with given my lack of apple experience? I have over 500 CDs to copy and I have only done 10 or so when this occurred.

So I tried reinstalling sl and nothing happens. Put the disc in and nothing happens. Is there a way to get the disc out at all? I tried the eject button on the keyboard.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Intel based imac (purchased in Sept 07) won't boot up because there's an unreadable movie dvd in the disc drive that won't eject... when I turn on the computer, all that happens is it plays the opening chime and displays a white screen... I'm wondering if someone can help or suggest what's going on: Basically I put a movie dvd in my imac that my regualar dvd player wouldn't play so I thought I'd try it in my imac. Once inserted, the disc drive tried to read it but it wouldn't mount, it just made an odd spinning/grinding sound. It wouldn't eject using the keyboard eject button so I shut down my computer so that I could call a friend to ask for advice.
My friend gave me several options to try - holding the left mouse button at start up, hold C down on keyboard, command option O F to open firmware, reboot pram but non of them work. Basically when I start my imac it immediately tries to read the unreadable dvd and doesn't get to the normal start up procedure, it just shows a white screen and chokes on the dvd. Is there a way to manually eject the cd or does the machine have to be opened up and the cd physically removed? Is it likely that my imac will start up normally once the unreadable dvd is removed? I hope my hard drive hasn't gone bad because I haven't backed it up in a long time... Is there a strong possibility that my hard drive is toast?
I upgraded the ram to 4gb crucial on my 24" intel imac (early 2008). Now it freezes at apple screen, but only if my external WD My Book hard drive is plugged in via firewire. If I unplug it from the firewire port.

Okay. So I had an Imac G5 (white) running 10.4 This one crashed and I got a new iMac G5 (Silver). Since then I have removed the old hard drive. Today I connected it to a Serial ATA - USB Converter. It powers up and sounds to be working fine (hums, spinning) but my new computer says "Disk is unreadable". It gives me the option to format, but I want to recover my old files first.
Important: I also have a similar Lacie external drive that I hooked up the same way and it worked fine. I was able to take the files off of it.
My guess: I believe when the drive is connected, it is trying to start up the OS (this was the start up disc). It has that click sound like it's trying to make the chime and then spinning like it's working. Can you change the drive to a "Slave"? Or is my disc corrupted?

Problem is I deleted some photos from my hard drive to free up space, thinking I could access them from my backup drive if I needed to. However, when I try to get the photos through my TimeMchine backup drive, it won't let me, saying it's not the original library. I was sick) and thought that the correct solution would be to attempt to put ANOTHER DVD in. It slid in with a little resistance. Now I have two DVDs stuck in my computer and NO IDEA how to get them out. Suggestions? I've tried the boot up - force eject to no avail.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've been looking at a number of different Firewire 800 enclosures to use with my new Mac Mini and I have seen lots of complaints with almost all the enclosures that I have investigated, including the Newertech MiniStack v3 which I thought should be a good one. A recent enclosure I came across that I haven't seen any bad reviews about is the Icy Dock (MB559UEB-1S). I'd like to know if others are using this and what they think about it. The next question has to do with the type of hard drive to put into the enclosure. Is it worth getting a high performance drive, or will the Firewire 800 interface be the bottleneck even with an average speed drive?

Basically, I do a lot of audio work with Logic and DP and I'm interested in replacing my 20" iMac's optical drive with a second internal hard drive. If anyone has any experience or insight regarding this, I would greatly appreciate your input. About 6 months ago, I did a DIY replacement of my iMac's internal hard drive (upgrade to 1 tb), so I'm pretty sure I'd like to DIY an optical drive / hard drive swap - that is, if it's 1) Proven to work stably (thermally and otherwise) 2) Not going to require the iMac's fan to be running faster/louder than normal Looking at my iMac's system profiler, the DVD drive is on an ATA bus (which, as I remember it, is slower than S-ATA). What kind of transfer rates do you think one could realistically expect with a hard drive on this ATA bus? Also, would I have to be careful about new hard drive compatibility, or are S-ATA and S-ATA II backwards compatible with ATA?
View 1 Replies View RelatedLately I've been using my external hard drive as the main drive of my imac I5 and every day it freezes when I open 3 or 4 apps or more or while doing several stuff at the same time. This, obviously, doesnt happen when using the internal hard drive of the imac, so I suppose is due to using firewire 800 or usb 2.0. Is it normal for every external hard drive to freeze when using it as the main drive or maybe is it that my external hard drive is bad?
I'm planning on buying a more quieter external hard drive to use as the main drive of my imac, but I wont do so if it also keeps freezing every day. Any suggestions? Is it normal even when using firewire 800? When using the external hard drive I umount the internal drive of the imac. Maybe this is the reason? Its a Lacie Big Disk 500GB. Would an external SSD make a difference or would it still freeze?

The imac keeps attempting to eject but it will not come out!
I'm pretty sure it's the logic board. Boot it up and it whizzes away and stays with a screen of eternal blackness, no responsiveness from the keyboard or anything. I've also got a CD stuck in the drive I'm pretty keen on getting out, anyway of going about it?

It was playing up a few times, where CD's wouldn't come out, but usually, with a little perseverance, it would come out.  Now, however, it's not happening!Â
I've tried most of the various ways people have posted - resetting PRAM, holding it at an angle, etc etc - but still had no luck. Â

I'm curious what people use for external storage on their iMacs. I have a Mac Pro which is getting a little long in the tooth. I'm debating whether to get a new Mac Pro or to get an iMac, which would be a pretty good speed bump from my Mac Pro 1,1. I'd get the ssd drive, and the 2TB harddrive and get aftermarket RAM. But what I like about the Mac Pro is the upgrades you can do. And I like the four hard drive bays, for storage and backup. I've got over 3 TB of photos and music/tv/movies, so I'm going to need an external drive. In addition, I'd like to be able to backup everything. Is there an elegant way to do this on an iMac with an external drive that isn't super loud and hot?

I would like to replace it with a recently purchased 1 TB SATA hard drive that is desperately needed, but the hard drive in the second compartment will NOT budge whatsoever. I've tried wiggling the hard drive side to side for hours, bloody scratched up hands, screwdriver method Apple suggests, chop sticks that another reader suggested, even a string with a knot to no avail. I don't have rubber clamps as one reader suggested. Does anyone else have any other suggestions besides going to a store and paying them to remove it?

Alright, here's the situation. Last week I shut down my computer to go away for thanksgiving, and when I came back and turned on my 20" white intel imac my hard drive fan sounds like it is going max rpm. I have istat pro installed and the rpm for the HDD fan is showing it's at zero. Does anybody have a clue as to why this is happening? My computer was working fine when I last used it but now my fan is going crazy. It's really loud and i'm concerned my the life of my fan. Any suggestions on what to do would be great. I installed Snow Leopard after the problem occured, but it's still happening.

I inserted the dvd and nothing happens, I then realized for some reason I no longer have a dvd drive (I just played a dvd on my macbook a couple of months ago) Now I can't eject the dvd. I've tried pretty much everything (holding the mouse pad, using terminal). It's as if I don't even have a eject button. I also don't have apple care and had to bring my computer in about 3 months ago to get fixed and that was a nice enough bill that I have to pay off.

My 24" iMac has crashed and has a CD stuck in the drive. The Mac continuously reboots but never makes it beyond a blank grey screen. I do have my OS CD and I have an external time machine backup, but I can't get to a terminal prompt to do anything. I've tried all the usual suspects for getting the CD out - and there is only one CD in the drive.
I've tried holding the mouse button down, pressing the eject button on the keyboard (I tried pressing eject on both a wireless and a wired keyboard). I also tried holding command-S to boot into single-user mode which didn't work. There is no pinhole on the CD to physically eject the CD and I understand that there's no way to boot from the Time Machine. I believe that not being able to remove the CD is hindering my ability to restore and boot into single-user mode.
So, I just got an SSD (vertex 2) and I decided to put it in the optical bay. The videos and instructions looked simple enough. You pull the enclosure straight out. However, I had to pull SO hard. The videos make it seem like it easily slides out, but I literally had to pull as hard as I could. I finally got it out and installed the SSD etc, but has anyone else had a problem with a really "stuck" optical drive enclosure?
Should I take it in for AppleCare?
I tried to install Parallels for Mac 4.0. In the process of installing Parallels and Windows XP I managed to get a cd stuck in the drive. There is NO icon on the mac desktop. I have uninstalled Parallels according to information if found on the web. It was supposed to be a complete uninstall but I still cannot get the cd out. I am very new to Mac and I am at a loss as to what to do. The stuck cd is NOT an os (such as xp), it was a program cd that I was trying to install in the virtual xp drive in Parallels. Can anyone steer me in the right direction. At this point I can't even do a install because of the stuck disk.
