My screen has become extremely floppy and it is pretty difficult to get it to stay up; if it does manage to do so it is at a pretty good slope. it's old and I have been tough on it, but was wondering how I would go about fixing this to the best of my ability? or. is this the kind of thing I have to take in for repairs?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI just got an older 12" Powerbook off of eBay. The seller said that the display was damaged from a spill. When I received it, it powered on fine but I noticed that I could still see everything on the screen, just had to look real close or open things up against a white background. I assumed that it needed a new inverter board. I got a working one but when I installed it, it didn't solve my problem. So I pulled a working screen (display, lcd, inverter, etc.) off of another 12" Powerbook and installed it. The screen is still dim! Does anyone know what else I can do to solve my problem?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI was recently given a (supposedly) non-functional iBook. I reinstalled Tiger on it, and it did fine through the installation and initial startup. However, everything runs really, really slow. It will work normally for about 5 seconds, and then slow to a crawl. Opening system preferences just took 5 minutes. The beach ball shows up with nearly every click.
Anyone know what this means? Bad ram? Bad HD? It is the 14" 1.42 ghz model with 756 mb ram.
Oh yeah, the reason it was presumed dead was because the previous owner smacked it on something, and the LCD screen is bashed up. The rest of it seems physically fine, but it was subject to some sort of impact.
Just picked a second hand g5 up which runs like a dream! One thing I have noticed recently after putting the machine on sleep is that it takes forever to respond after been woken. The display and desktop come on instantly but when I click a program all I get is the beachball, the hdd doesn't appear to spin up. Then about 5 minutes later you hear the hdd spin up and away we go back to normal. It doesn't do this all the time though!

My G5 tower is one of the early models. Today I turned it on. Immediately the drive bay fan was running at maximum speed. The Mac's temperature was cold as it had not been used for 12 hours. So the speeding fan could not have been due to the drive bay being overheated. The fan never slows down. Even after a restart it immediately spins at its maximum. Plus it stays at maximum speed all the time.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOver the past few weeks, I've noticed problems with my PowerBook's headphone jack. The headphone plugs don't stay seated in the jack, resulting in loss of audio in either one ear or both until I adjust the plug, at which point it will almost always happen again. I usually end up having to hold the plug in place to get consistent sound from both ears.
At first, I thought it was just my headphones, so I borrowed a couple pairs from friends and ordered a backup pair from Amazon, all with the same results. I've peeked inside the jack once or twice and everything looks fine...but what do I know? I'll be in downtown Chicago tomorrow and Thursday, so I plan on making a trip to the Apple Store, but is there anything else I should try beforehand? As I recall, the PB headphone jack is part of the logic board, correct?
I've decided to reinstall OS X on my powerbook, but I'm having trouble. I can't partition or erase using disk utility from the cd. It says it's trying but it just sits there. When I try to do a erase and install, it stays at "preparing the disk".

Usually, it hardly rocks when i tap it, but now when I tap it, it rocks back and forth. I made an appointment with a local apple store for later this evening, but would they be able to fix this? When laying down in in bed, holding the MBP vertically watching a movie or whatever, the screen will not stay open for the life of me. It's like the hinges are loose. When on a flat surface, the screen stays open, even if at an angle less than 45 degrees. I read there was an issue with this in 2008. I'll be visiting the Apple Store tomorrow.

Almost every time I would move my Macbook Pro (I generally use it as a desktop, so move it very rarely) my screen would come on white and not show anything for an hour or so, (except a flicker or bleed of color here and there) when the image would suddenly flicker on back to normal. Now, it just stays mostly white, with lots of lines going up and down - the bit of 'color' in the lines does seem to match where windows should be on screen, but very generally, and it doesn't update in real-time, it 'refreshes' every so often. I attached a photo so you can see what I'm talking about.
I had my logic board replaced about a year ago now because of a faulty Nvidia 8600 chip (have a Santa Rosa MBP). I'm currently using an external monitor - which last time was exactly what I did when the chip started dying out and external display worked just fine then, despite the fact that the GPU couldn't drive the internal display anymore, so that's not a clear indicator that the GPU is fine. When I first started having this problem, I brought it to the Apple Store, and they ran the test on the GPU and said it was fine... but that was months back, so I don't know?
I'm thinking (hoping) this is a display cable issue and not a GPU issue. Also, if it was the display cables at fault, how much would it cost to replace the display cables? (internal LCD -seems- to work fine, backlight, etc., I think it's the connection..) Also, as a side-note, since my internal LCD is no longer working, how can I boot into Windows XP (Boot Camp) on an external monitor? It seems not to 'plug and play' at all, unfortunately, and I obviously can't get to the display settings if I can't see anything on the LCD!
Very occasionally the screen on my iMac (early 08 24") goes blank and it makes an incredibly loud static sound that's independent of the volume control setting. The power then needs disconnecting to restart the machine. Haven't been able to tie it to any specific program. Apple Care asked I leave it on logged in on a new user account (at the time I originally thought it only happened in sleep mode, but have since discovered this is not the case).
It's happened maybe 3 or 4 times in the same number of months. I've only found one similar case on the net, with someone suggesting it was Safari 4 beta, which I've found not to be the case with mine. It's on extended warranty. I think there's something seriously wrong with it (it's already had the hard drive and power supply replaced).
Been having a few huge issues with my new MBA 13".
#1 - Putting the laptop to sleep. I put the laptop to sleep and put it in the bag and at some point it wakes back up. If I don't remove it during the day by that afternoon/evening when I go to remove it the battery is at 0% and it's fully discharged. One day I took it out a couple hours in and the fan was blowing like mad like it had been running for a while, when I opened the lid I had a black screen and it was frozen. Disabled waked for network access but it was no help.
#2 - When the laptop goes in standby and I open it back up I get a beach ball forever - I've tried to let it go for upwards of 30 minutes and it never unfreezes, but I can move the mouse around. I ended up telling the laptop not to standby when it was plugged in to a power source otherwise I ended up always losing work.
I use a White MacBook (early 2008) with OS X Lion on it. I checked for updates recently, when I found that OS update 10.7.4 was available.
When I started the update, the Software Update utility asked me to update by restarting. After I did this, the update got downloaded and the machine restarted. Now, it is getting stuck on the boot screen with the Apple logo replaced by a 'circle with a line in it' (like a typical "not allowed") logo.

Whenever I start up my macbook it stayed on grey background with an apple logo and spinning thing. I press and hold the shift key once and it went to safe mode and did my diagnostic and found out that some file got corrupted so I thought maybe I'll just do another start up and everything will go back to normal. Then I restart it again but this time it wont past that grey back ground w/ apple logo w/ spinning thing again. I tried to do the safe mode again and it won't let me anymore. I went to apple site and i found a bunch of keyboard shortcuts, non of those help me. Any here have any idea what might happen to my MacBook. I'm in Kazahstan for work related trip and they don't use Mac here so there is no where I can buy another snowleaopard cd.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently bought my Mac Pro off of a friend. He still had it under his name, and I changed it to my name under system preferences. I think it messed up the uploading, exporting, importing, and viewing of my pictures. I can upload them to the computer fine, but when I go to export or view them in iPhoto, all I get is a black screen. Exporting, and it tells me unable to create "users/(friends name)/documents/" I don't want to lose my pictures. I've already tried to rebuild the library with iPhoto Manager and with iPhoto itself.

I tried the following to make a bootable floppy image and it would not even read in a virtual machine. I have Oracle Virtualbox. I am using a Mac Mini 2011 with 4GB of RAM. I have tried making a blank floppy and copying to it by dragging and using the Terminal, but neither works. Here are the cmds I used:
dd if=/dev/zero bs=1024 count=1440>floppy.img
Then I mounted and erased the image file in Disk Utility.
cp -Rpv /Volumes/Untitled/ /Volumes/UNTITLED 1/
The above command copied all the files from the floppy to the image but the image wouldn't read on the virtual machine.

If you connect say a 13inch macbook to a 19inch monitor using the closed clamshell mode, will the picture quality on the monitor be like a stretched out version of the 13inch screen? I.e. poor, or does the macbook just act like a desktop computer and allow high quality viewing.

When I enter it, Installer goes back to the screen before it asked me for the password. When I click next, it asks me for my password, and the cycle repeats. I tried removing my password to no avail. I can install .pkg files from the sudo installer -pkg command. I dont know how to do this for installers that are in app form.
