MacBook Pro :: CD DVD Drive Broke And Right Speaker Connection Destroyed?

Nov 27, 2010

I dropped my new-ish MacBook Pro accidentally yesterday, from approximately 3 and a half feet onto a hard surface, and it dented the area around the power adapter and scratched it up pretty bad. At first the computer seemed fine; it came right back as if nothing had happened, no data or work was lost, and the hard disk drive passed SMART tests. However, later, I attempted to put a DVD into the Superdrive and it could not be inserted farther then approximately 2 and a half inches. I tried several software methods to resolve my problem, but in the end it was indeed a hardware problem caused by the drop.

Hardware :: Time Capsule Hard Drive Broke

Sep 29, 2010

I'm moving in about a week to London for the next 3-4 years. I'm wondering if I should haul my broken Time Capsule to London and have it replaced there instead of getting another one in the U.S.?The reason for the London switch would be that I'd get a proper plug-in. Also, I'm wondering if my U.S. device is approved for transmitting wirelessly in the U.K.?

Hardware :: Recover Data From Dead Lacie Hard Drive / Unable To Mount Hard Drive

Sep 6, 2009

Today I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.

Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.

Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.

I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.

Desktops :: How Do I Install 10.4 On The Maxtor Hard Drive

Apr 15, 2009

It is a B&W G3 Desktop rev 1 350 mhz 1GB with 6GB Quantum startup volume with 9.2.2, and an aCard, Maxtor 120GB that is going to have Tiger on it.

Two OSs on Two Hard Drives and one OS on each hard drive on one apple desktop.

The hard drive is connected and the Apple System Profiler on 9.2.2 6GB startup volume detects the aCard and the Hard Drive, but when I select which hard drive to install, there is the original hard drive, and nothing else.

How do I install 10.4 on the Maxtor Hard Drive? Is there a key combination that I have to hold down while it is starting up?

Desktops :: Full Hard Drive On Mac Mini

Jul 2, 2010

My son is having a BIG problem with his Mac Mini. His Mini has a 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, memory of 3GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and runs Mac OS X Version 10.6.3. He has Time Machine and also a 1.5TB desktop hard drive. From time to time, he has been getting pop-up warnings that his internal hard drive was about to become full. He would then do some deleting and things would be fine until the next pop-up. Last week, after watching some videos on Utube, he tried to open iTunes and, instead of a pop-up, got an error message with some numbers (which he didn't write down). It began the usual routine, starting with a white screen with the apple logo in the center and the loading circle spinning right below it. After that, it normally goes to a light blue screen and then loads the desktop, but this time (and ever since) it stopped at the blue screen, empty except for the message "Hard Drive Full, Please Delete Data".

Apparently the screensaver still works, but not much else -- like the Finder. He said that he did get something to appear on the top bar by taking the batteries out of his Apple Bluetooth keyboard, bringing up the "Bluetooth Setup Assistant", but once a wired keyboard is plugged in, everything on the top bar disappears (since the Mac sees a keyboard). He was going to do a "restore" and, in preparation, thought he had done a successful back-up to his external hard drive using the Time Machine feature. However, when he checked the Time Machine under System Preferences it said that the external HD had nearly 1.5 TB unused (only a couple hundred pictures or so on it) and the Time Machine was supposed to put about 70GB on there. So now he is concerned that he didn't/can't do a back-up.

Desktops :: External Hard Drive Unable To Mount

Jan 20, 2010

Without warning my iMac [OS X Snow Leopard] popped up an alert saying that I should eject a drive before disconnecting it. I had done nothing to generate this error message. I clicked ok to close it and noticed my 4 month old, external 8T Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 was no longer visible in my drive directory. I also noticed this external unit was making a looped grinding noise as if it was trying to write without success. I figured one of the drives failed and took it to the mac doctor. Other than a few directory errors, everything appeared to be fine, so I paid the service fee, brought it home and plugged it in only to find the same prob - obviously it's something with my iMac. Before I go spending more service fees, I wondered if anyone here could point me toward a method of discovering what might be wrong. I ran disk utility [verify and permissions] and fixed some directory errors, but don't know how to look further. iMac was home networked with a PC [Windows] and a laptop [Windows]. I did notice something wacky with the PC, but its very old and I expect it to die any day. I was running the network through the PC, so I direct connected the iMac to the router and modem but no change: still cannot see the external drives. What other info do you need to make an educated guess for me?

OS X :: Recover Data Fom Hard Drive / External Drive Stopped Mounting

Sep 4, 2009

So, I've been searching the forums, as I just had a 1TB (well actually a dual 500GB) external drive stop mounting and start clicking on me. I'm trying to find a way to recover files, and I know I've seen a lot of posts on DriveSavers, which. I was searching around, and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a company called "OneWorld Data Recovery." It was something I stumbled across, but I can't find any reviews, or nail down anybody who's used it.

Clearly, this seems fairly suspect, but I figured I'd check and see if anybody had ever heard of it or used it. Thanks!

Build-quality wise the unibodies are really as perfect as I've ever experienced any machine to be. Simply amazing. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

OS X :: MBP Hard Drive To Logic Board Connection

Jun 9, 2009

So the cable that connects the hard drive to the logic board in my MacBook Pro (15" A1211 model) had the adhesive wear off and as a result, the tiny little hook broken off. Apple quoted me between $300 and $1250 (great range huh?) to fix it, in spite of that apparently useless little Apple Care warranty I paid $350 for and have never used. Sorry, kind of really annoyed right now. Anyway, I'm not paying that. I found a new connector for like $30. Has anyone had any luck reinstalling this part? Any tips or how-to's? Alternately, the hook is still there, and I've read forum posts about potentially soldering it back on, but there are no responses, so has anyone done that before? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Another issue is that my CD drive randomly stopped working. The guy told me something was probably just out of line, but they won't fix THAT because "there's a dent in the back of the computer." It's a tiny dent that has been there for over two years now, so...again, dumb. But I can't seem to get the screws off the optical drive to open it. Any suggestions for loosening really stuck screws?

OS X :: How To Retrieve Data From Old Hard Drive

Broke down and bought a new imac, (it was time) and tried to retrieve my files and such from Mozy, but some critical ones are missing. Is there anyway to retrieve the data from my old hard drive, say take it out and go to the Apple store later today?

Hardware :: Macbook Pro - 1TB Hard Drive With Firewire 800 Connection?

I feel like giving another company a go even though I know lifespans aren't very long on any hard drive. I've been looking at Lacie hard drives because they support firewire 800 but they are a tad bit more expensive. I don't mind paying the extra money if I can get more than two years out of it. I am looking for a 1TB hard drive with fire wire 800 connection. I'll be using it primarily as my time machine backup but with a 1TB I may partition it as well and store some other media on there.

My question is this - on a simplistic level, could transferring the failed HD platters to a new enclosure work as a means to retrieve the info. So if I buy I cheap working drive of same size/manufacturer - say 20 gig. Take it apart and remove it's platters. Then replace them with her failed disk's platters (160 gig). Would I stand any chance of retrieving the data? I really can't afford the $600 ish I'm being quoted to get it done professionally.

I've used Disk Warrior in other circumstances but never tried on an initialised drive. Nor would I know how to get a copy of such old software.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what software from that time might recover the data?
