Anticipating the delivery of a G5 tomorrow and it has a clean drive fitted apart from o/s but all my project images are on a tb drive on a pc, do these need copying over to the G5 or can I fit the drive as a slave into the G5 and will the images show up in the mac browser? Or am I expecting too much?
View 12 RepliesSo a friends girlfriend tossed, as in threw, her older ibook g4. You ask why? Well she was mad at it so she punched the screen and it cracked, so she gave it a quick toss because the screen cracked. So I get to be the one to try to salvage the harddrive. I have the ibook torn apart, my macbook, a macmini and an external usb IDE harddrive enclosure at my disposal.
So I tried to target it through my macbook by holding down T and booting up the ibook. Hard drive clicks and spins, but nothing mounts on my macbook. So I bought an external USB for the ibook harddrive. My macbook won't see it when connected. So does this mean a bad drive? Do the older drives have to be connected by firewire?
I have an iMac G5 with a broken graphics card. As a result it won't get past the start up screen when booting. I have a new mac on the way, but I'm wondering what would be the easiest/cheapest way to access my files on the old iMac.
I've read about taking the HD out and using a SATA/USB connector to attach it to the new computer as an external HD. Is that my best option, or is there a way to boot the iMac and just access the HD via the iMac's firewire/usb ports.
I've run the CD diagnostic tests and it says everything is fine, except the graphics card.
i added a newer dvd-r drive today and used the original one as a back up when i press the eject button, the top one opens. how do i access the 2nd optical drive?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently got a MacBook to replace my Toshiba WinXP machine. I use a Mini with 3 external drives as a server, to which the laptop is backed up. The drives are accessed using Sharepoints. With XP I had no problems backing up and accessing the files as needed. With the MacBook I bumped into a variety of permission errors when I tried to access the files from the server. I finally checked "Ignore Ownership" and that seems to have made the files available, but I still get the do not enter icon on the directories. Clicking on the directory allows it to open, but it is annoying. My wife has the same problem, first with her ibook and now with her new MacBook. It causes problems with certain applications, as well.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have my time capsule setup (green light and all). I can backup to it. I can access it and its folders from my new MBP. I can run the windows (and/or apple) Airport Utility and see and configure the TC within the utility but I cannot access it like a network drive on the XP box. I thought I saw somewhere to enter a workgroup name for PC networks but can't find it now.

My MacBook Pro's internal Hard Drive is 250GB but I have my iPhoto/iMovie Events/iMovie Projects stored on external drives to free up space/speed.
How can I setup my Iomega wirelessly to store all of my iPhoto/iMovie/etc and make it accessible wherever I am in the world?
I currently have it setup as an Airport Drive, But I think I can only access it when I'm on my local network?
I also backup my computer via SuperDuper.
I'd like to be able to boot up from it if I needed too, Incase my internal hard drive failed. (This may have something to do with 'Startup Disk>Network Startup Disk')
My Macbook crashed recently and it just tells me to turn it off when I start it. I've exhausted all the recommended options in the manual (default settings, etc.) and unfortunately, I'm missing the first one of the Tiger installation/restoration discs . Is there any way I can access the files I need to back up using Carbon Copy Cloner on an external hard driver (which in this case would be an ipod)? It seems to think you can, but nothing on their web site seems especially clear in this. Also - I don't have access to a Mac right now, so presumably I won't be able to unpack the files the CCC DMG on Ubuntu or the ipod - not sure whether that matters or not.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy MBP is running out of space and since I have a external drive that right now I don't use I'd like to move part of my podcasts library in the external HD. I have already copied the podcasts from the iTunes folder in my Mac to the External Drive and I have deleted the local copies. Now, I tried to add them to the library (File > Add to Library) but in this way it copies the file in my local hard drive. How can I keep the files in the external drive but make them accessible from iTunes like they were locally stored?

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy music and video library, totaling about 1.5 TB, is stored on an external USB hard drive. When I want to listen to something, I copy it over to my MacBook Pro (15" late 2009, 500GB hard drive) using iTunes. My home stereo is connected to an AirPort Express for audio streaming.
I can't really afford a TimeCapsule or an AirPort Extreme Base Station, either of which would seem to offer the most elegant way to remotely access my media library over WiFi (true?). Yesterday I found a Belkin Wireless N+ router at Costco for $69 that includes a USB storage port, and am wondering if it would do the same job for a quarter of the cost. Here are my questions:
1) Could I access my media drive wirelessly from my MBP using the Belkin N+ router? Is there another (better?) solution that I am missing?
2) Can I use iTunes to manage my library on the external hard drive, while also maintaining a smaller collection of audio files locally on the MBP's hard drive?
I'm not the only one in this situation! It seems Drobos and other RAID or NAS solutions are quite costly ... more so than an Airport Extreme.
I backed up my iMac desktop at work onto an external hard drive. I can see the files, but they are all locked. When I go to open, I receive the following message "The folder (whatever the name is) can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents." I understand that the system I want to transfer to is different, but is there -- shouldn't there be an override asking for the password.
Since I am the administrator to both systems, I would hope I could see the documents that I created.

My PPC G5 computer is currently connected to two monitors via VGA adapters, and lately when I scroll any window on either of the two screens, or resize a window, I hear a faint clicking sound through my earphones. I also hear it when I load a new web page (using either Safari or Firefox). The images seem to click faintly when they load. I'm on Mac OS X version 10.5.8, on a Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5 with 8GB DDR SDRAM.
View 1 Replies View RelatedEvery time I try to "share" (move them out) my iPhoto files and move them out of iPhoto to another folder, if the numbers happen to be the same from a previous time, it will tell me they already exist and do I want to replace those photos with the new ones. The problem is they are not the same image, and I don't want to loose the older ones by replacing them with the new ones. How do I avoid this? I've tried to rename them in iPhoto and it still says they are the same number. I'm trying to organize my thousands of images.

But if the same image is sent to any other PC (from the ma user) it opens OK.The added twist. If another pc user opens (which it does with no issues) then closes and sends back to the failing pc it opens with no issues!
I've been having this problem for a while now and its only with images and videos when i try to open any picture or video this msg comes up "The file couldn’t be opened because there is no such file" and i can only open it if i copied the file from my hard drive to my computer.when i open the info for the same picture (one in on the hard drive and one my computer) the one on the hard drive has nothing under "more info" while the one on my computer has a lot of details under "more info" .

My friend gave me his old Apple cube G4 + 15" Cinema display in like 1000 pieces. Its completely teared apart. I tried a lot, but it doesn't work. The original IDE cable wasn't included, so I bought one for 2 cents. It should work or not? Maybe the powersupply. I'm not sure. I don't believe actually that the hardware itself, like the motherboard is broken. When everything is into place and I connect the cube to the powersupply it boots immediately. I don't have to do anything. Harddrive spins and the superdrive makes some noise as well. This repeats itself every 5 seconds. The screen is connected and gets power through DVI, but no display. Both the cube and display have touch enabled buttons to switch it on, but they do not respond (I guess).. Motherboard gives 2 light. DS1 is green, DS2 is red.

And I purchased a NexStar CS 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 external case. But the connections don't match. What do I need to do? Do I need to buy some sort of adaptor? Someone just gave me an old G3 Power Mac that works fine but has OS9 installed. I'd like to put Tiger on it but it has a CD-ROM drive instead of DVD. Looking at the currect drive it seems like a standard CD tray drive. Is it possible to swap out this drive with a DVD drive or do I have to have a special type of drive approved by Apple? I'm doing this so that my kids will have a access to another computer in my office.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?
I am having trouble connecting my mac to the pc, when I try to connect to the server and enter the pcs ip address it says connection failed and the ip does not exit...etc. I've followed the guide on here to and on [URL]
Does anyone have ideas why this is happening...? My PC is the desktop connected straight to the modem and my macbook connected wirelessly through the router.
