May 30, 2008Since the MBA has no internal DVD drive, I would like to pre load some DVD's on the MBA hard drive before I go on the road. I was thinking of using mac the ripper to rip my personal DVD. Is there a way in Front Row to import video_ts files without using an optical disk? As far as memory serves this wasn't possible with Tiger.If this is impossible what is an other way to store DVD's on my hard drive and watch them in front row?

Jul 28, 2010Im trying to reinstall my mac os x install disk using a samsung external optical drive. My super drive is jammed so i purchased a samsung on amazon. When i put the disc in i click on it to open it and the option install mac os x and bundled software. So i click it and a screen pops up saying click on the button below to restart and start your installation. The problem is when the mac restarts the installation doesnt start. All that happens is the screen that gives me the option to install mac os x and bundled software pops up. So what do i do, i click it and once again im on the screen that says click on the button below to restart and start your installation.

Feb 5, 2010I did a search but couldn't find any specific info as related to the 20" (late 2006) iMac. Basically, I do a lot of audio work with Logic and DP and I'm interested in replacing my 20" iMac's optical drive with a second internal hard drive. If anyone has any experience or insight regarding this, I would greatly appreciate your input. About 6 months ago, I did a DIY replacement of my iMac's internal hard drive (upgrade to 1 tb), so I'm pretty sure I'd like to DIY an optical drive / hard drive swap - that is, if it's 1) Proven to work stably (thermally and otherwise) 2) Not going to require the iMac's fan to be running faster/louder than normal Looking at my iMac's system profiler, the DVD drive is on an ATA bus (which, as I remember it, is slower than S-ATA). What kind of transfer rates do you think one could realistically expect with a hard drive on this ATA bus? Also, would I have to be careful about new hard drive compatibility, or are S-ATA and S-ATA II backwards compatible with ATA?

[URL] But what I do not "FULLY" understand, is the process of "installing" the new HD when you boot the computer. - general and specifics This may seem like a "unnecessary/dumb" question, but the main reason why I'm asking this is because I'm installing this 2nd HD from the optical drive space. May 19, 2012The internal optical drive (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846) for my Intel iMac (late 2006) stop working after listening to a music CD. I inserted another music CD and the drive will try to read the CD, but after awhile, it would eject the CD. I inserted the last music CD I listened to and it did the same thing. Then I inserted several other data cds into the drive resulting in the same problem.

My understanding from my old PC is never to share the SATA cable with the optical drive as it will take the transfer speed of the optical drive, because they are running in the same "channel"?Is the 2 SATA cable in the optical drive bay 2 separate distinct ports/channel?

My imac will not boot from the internal hard drive (Intel processor) When I use disk utility to try and repair the disk, I get error messages and it won't repair. I can see the HD but cannot repair it. When I connect using target mode with my mac book pro, the hard drive does not appear on my host (macbook pro) computer. I have reloaded OS X (Leopard) onto a firewire external drive and can boot my imac that way but I can not find my original internal Macintosh HD. Will disk warrior be able to help with this scenario. I would really like to access that internal Macintosh HD and retrieve my files.

I put the drive in a disk drive enclosure via USB but my new Mac, Mac Pro Intel, 10.4.11 cannot read the drive. Feb 3, 2012I have a full 2TB Lacie drive that i want to copy to back up and store in a safe place. I have a Seagate 2TB drive hooked up (both drives on USB) but it freezes everytime. Sometimes i get almost all the way to the end and sometimes it only gets to 150 GB.

Jan 28, 2009I own a new MBP (October 2008 model) and just two days ago my optical drive has started making weird noises whenever I bring my computer out of sleep. It makes a noise like it is ejecting a disk three times, about once a second for 3 seconds. This is really annoying, especially when I use my computer to take notes during lecture because everyone looks to see who is the douche bag with the noisy computer disrupting class. Any suggestions?

Is there any way to allow me to just use the button on the drive or tie it to the eject button on the keyboard when it's connected, or even another key command like Opt-Eject?

Feb 26, 2009I recently purchased a Western Digital "My Passport Essential" 160mb external hard drive. When I attempt to transfer "any" type of material (JPEGS, PSD, MP3, MPEG, etc) from my 600 MHz PowerPC G3 (iMac) operating on an OS X, to the external hard drive, the file's "Date Modified" (date and time) "mysteriously" changes to the time at which I'm copying the files. For example, a file that was last saved on July 1, 2008 and then transferred (copied) on February 26, 2009 to the external drive, suddenly appears with a "new" February 26, 2009 saved date.
Because, I've always viewed my files by the "Date Modified" option at the top of the folder, I've relied on my files for its accurate date and times.

Dec 18, 2006I want to copy my iTunes library from one external drive (currently connected to an iBook) to a 2nd external drive (connected to an eMac). The library is almost 60GB and so can not fit on either machine's hard drive.
The music currently plays through the iBook from the first external drive.
I want to be able to play the same music on the eMac (through the 2nd external drive).
Which is the best way to go about this?
Should I:
a) Connect the 1st external drive to the eMac and manually drag and drop the music from there to the 2nd external drive, or
b)Use Silverkeeper Basckup and do a backup of the Music folder in the 1st drive to the 2nd drive, after connecting the 1st to the eMac?
or is there not much difference in doing either? Or is there a more efficient option using iTunes?

How can I do this where I can use these pictures on another computer though if needed? I know that I can move the entire iPhoto library but that wouldn't be compatible on a non-Mac correct?

Jan 20, 2010Without warning my iMac [OS X Snow Leopard] popped up an alert saying that I should eject a drive before disconnecting it. I had done nothing to generate this error message. I clicked ok to close it and noticed my 4 month old, external 8T Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 was no longer visible in my drive directory. I also noticed this external unit was making a looped grinding noise as if it was trying to write without success. I figured one of the drives failed and took it to the mac doctor. Other than a few directory errors, everything appeared to be fine, so I paid the service fee, brought it home and plugged it in only to find the same prob - obviously it's something with my iMac. Before I go spending more service fees, I wondered if anyone here could point me toward a method of discovering what might be wrong. I ran disk utility [verify and permissions] and fixed some directory errors, but don't know how to look further. iMac was home networked with a PC [Windows] and a laptop [Windows]. I did notice something wacky with the PC, but its very old and I expect it to die any day. I was running the network through the PC, so I direct connected the iMac to the router and modem but no change: still cannot see the external drives. What other info do you need to make an educated guess for me?

Mar 8, 2010Well, I'm a new owner of a MacBook Pro 13" and the Hard Drive is only 160GB I believe which is plenty of space for what I use it for but I would much rather have my Music/Movies/Pictures and all media separate from that space. I was just thinking of getting a portable External Hard Drive for all of my media but then I could also upgrade my 160GB drive to let's say a 500GB Drive and do away without an External drive. What would you do? Upgrade your existing internal HD or get an External HD?
The MacBook Pro usually just stays on the desk anyways so an External HD wouldn't be any inconvenience to me but if I wanted to just unplug it and go will that harm anything? Also, there is plenty of External Hard Drives available right now and I was wondering if any were better than others? I just want something basic, portable, and works with a mac. No firewire needed, USB is fine with me. I was really looking at the My Passport from WD and was wondering if the non Mac Ready versions work with a Mac anyways? [URL]
