Recently I inherited an iMac G5 (no iSight) that has bluetooth and a preinstaled airport card. When I recieved it the drive was wiped so I did an install from the original disks. My problem is that the computer will not boot properly ; I can hear the chime, mostly the lcd lights up but it stays black, sometimes I will see the gray screen and from there it will either go to the light blue screen and hang or it will distort the picture and the fan will kick in. 2 out of 20 times it will boot successfuly but after about 1 min. it will freeze up, distort the image and then the display goes crazy! I don't know whats wrong... the capacitors have been replaced a not too long ago along with the power supply, and I ran a hardware test and it says everything is fine ( the G5 won't recognize the airport card or bluethooth!). I need help!

I am currently running a 15" Powerbook G4 1.67, 1GB ram, latest update for 10.5.
Yesterday my computer randomly went to sleep and wouldn't wake up. I forced it to shut down and then tried rebooting it. It started up, but went to sleep before even getting to the login screen. I have searched the internet, this website, and the apple support site to try and fix the problem.
I have tried resetting the PMU (although I don't know if I did that correctly), leaving it to rest without any battery or AC power hooked up to it, and the CMD + ALT + P + R reset all to no avail.
It seems like the general outcome for random sleep problems hasn't been too good,
I have a strange boot issue having (tried) to install EFI 2.7 update. When I restart the laptop, it 'chimes', displays a grey screen, then chimes, displays a grey screen, forever. I hit the bower (off) button for 5 secs or thereabouts, and restart, same thing. I do this 4 times and finally it reboots. But the EFI update still appears as needing to be installed (software update tells me it is not installed). Update history shows however that it IS installed. I can go through this process any number of times. I now have Software Update history showing quite a few installs opf the EFI 2.7 update. If I just do a restart without installing, I also go through the same fail to restart / fail to start / ... / eventually restart sequence.
So it seems now that the laptop will only start after 4 failed restarts and finally it starts. After starting it all appears to be perfectly fine. Nothing strange in the console logs that I can see. The failed reboots don't seem to register in the console logs - I suspect that the failure to restart is pretty early on in the boot sequence, well before it tries to load any semblance of the OSX kernel. It is almost as if it is trying to boot from someplace other than the disk ... until eventually it gives up and tries the disk. (I have tried booting with and without network cable - no difference) I don't know enough about mac bootup sequences to know if there is some config/setting that is screwed up causing this odd behaviour.

I'm having an issue with my PowerBook G4. It wouldn't turn on at all before, so I installed another motherboard. Now it will power on, but it only shows this folder icon that blinks. I'm a complete n00b to macs. If this were a PC I would of fixed it by now. I need some help. I've tried the installation disk, but when I hold down the C key, it takes longer, but it just shows that folder again. When I hold down the Option key, it only gives me a reload button, and an arrow button, but no boot up options. Do you think it could be a problem with this other used motherboard? Or is it that I just didn't put it in right? I've double checked all the hardware, and it seems to be all connected. The keyboard lights up, and the trackpad works, and it makes the boot-up sound.
View 8 Replies View RelatedDoes anybody have any information on when Apple are going to launch a PROPERLY upgraded iMac? They've just announced a new version with some upgraded integrated graphics, more memory and storage, but when are we going to see an iMac with Quad-Core processing and Blue-Ray? Let's face it, this is what everyone is waiting/hoping for. I've been waiting to buy a new 24" iMac for over a year - I've even got the money waiting in the bank! However I'm not going to buy until they properly refresh the range. We've seen the laptop range refreshed and the Mac Pro range upgraded, but they just seem to be dithering about a bit with the iMac. Why? I actually looked at just going for a Mac Pro instead of waiting, but they are so much more expensive than an iMac I can't justify it. C'mon Apple - I love your product but am waiting for the REAL upgrade!
View 24 Replies View RelatedI have the latest versions of FF (3.5) and Safari, so its not a browser issue (at least i dont THINK it is). Also, this problem started before i updated to these versions. I noticed 2-3 months ago that in websites such as YouTube, and several others, if theres two lines of words below a thumbnail, the 2nd line of words is half-hidden, as if one could scroll down to see them. But of course there =is= nothing to scroll down *to*. IN addition, on some sites, words get superimposed on top of other words. Ive tried doing some google research on this topic (including eliminating duplicate fonts), and have come up empty.

But, in Leopard (v10.5.7) whenever the iMac monitor sleeps, the secondary monitor does what a monitor usually does when the video cable is unplugged (does the whole factory test thing with the box of red/green/blue randomly moving around.) Is there any way to make it sleep?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am tech support for an Elementary-Middle school with an all Mac curriculum. We have been this way for just about 4 years now and our first model iMac 17 inches are no longer under warranty.
We have three iMac 17"s that don't work properly, here's the rundown:
- The First works properly fine but has a bad DVI port (we run SMARTBoards and require them for most of our classroom computers)
- The Second has a bad logic board, we don't have any other information about it
- The Third has a broken display, we're pretty sure everything else works on it.
We don't have applecare support on these three and are interested in turning them in to two (hopefully) or one working model for a teacher.
Any ideas/suggestions/resources?
First, I have a mid-2008 Aluminum iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4 Ghz, 2GB Ram, running OS X 10.5.6. So two days ago, it started hanging on me. Prior to this I have never had any problems with it. I had mail open, a browser window and a chat window. Started getting the spinning beach ball of death. It finally totally locked up on me and I have to force it to shut down.
However, upon reboot, it would not get past the white screen with the apple logo and the spinning gray gear icon. I'm talking like 10-15 minutes. I forced it to shut down (probably not a good idea) and this time on reboot I got the folder icon with the question mark as if firmware could not locate the booter file. I loaded the install DVD that came with the mac and ran Disk Utilities.................
I only restart about once a week or so and for about the last four to six weeks, I've been having issues restarting my 27" iMac, which is about five months old. What happens is that after I click restart and it logs out, it gets to the blue screen and the status bar in the center of the screen just keeps spinning and spinning (not the beach ball, the other one). I've let it run for 30 minutes before and it never shuts down so I have to hold down the power button and then push it again to start it up.
Problem is, I'm starting to feel the effects of that shortcut now with iTunes randomly pausing more and more times and for longer and longer amounts of time when playing a video. I'm guessing it has something to do with the processes that are normally run during a regular restart not being run since it won't perform a natural restart.
I've posted on here before that I'm getting significantly slower framerates on WoW than others with the GT130 or the 8800GS or even some ATI 2600's (on similar settings and resolutions) so now I'm thinking I have a lemon. Is there any way I can test my card to see if it's working as it should be??

Then I did the upgrade to OSX 10.9.2, for sofar was everything ok. Later I did the upgrade to OSX 10.9.3 and then the problems started.
A portion of AVID no longer worked properly. So the problem was clearly the upgrade. Now my question is how can I go back to OSX 10.9.2Â ...

I have a 2 week old iMac 27", i7, 2tb Hard Drive, 16gb RM
In the second week the boot up times became very slow.
I would turn the machine on and get the chime within 5 seconds or so.
Then just a black/blank screen.
Eventually after about 10mins I would get a white screen then it would boot up normally.
Now the machine just doesn't get to the white screen. So I get the chime and then just darkness. It does sound like the machine is on (usual quiet imac whirring).
I've tried various key commands when I turn the machine on including pressing C with the install disk in the dvd drive and the alt, control, P, R pram reset.
I've also tried unplugging all the cables, leaving the machine for a minute and switching back on. I did manage to perform the PRAM reset once. I reset the machine and it booted fine.
But now when I switch it on just darkness.
I've called after sales and will try to get the machine replaced but in the meantime is there anything I could try that might make the machine work? I need to do a remix this weekend (deadline Monday) so really need to get it working.
I have a Imac PPC with a 2Ghz processor and 1GB of Ram. I am running leopard 10.5.8. Recently i woke the PC from sleep mode to find a blue screen with only the cursor working. Using the internet, I determined how to get the PC booted in safe mode. I have used all the disk utilities at my disposal along with onyx and cocktail to try and fix what I believe is a startup problem. I hae booted the PC in single user mode and tried the fskc codes, which i believe is just the same as the disk utility. Based on my computer all permissions are correct and there is nothing wrong with the HD. The PC still will not boot normally. I have even done an archive and re-install of Leopard.Â

I think it worked at one point, but sometime around the point when I set up Fusion with the partition, Windows Aero turned off and is no longer an option in the display settings. I installed this driver with the modded INF to see if it would do anything, but Aero is still not an option. I also have issues playing some games in Fusion, while they work fine in Boot Camp.

I could not even get to the Startup Manager ('opt' at boot) or boot straight to the disc ('C').Now i'm in a position where no matter what i do, the system boots to the linux disc. I cannot even force the startup into OSX to try to eject the disc from there. I've tried holding all of these keys/combinations at startup
View 3 Replies View RelatedBack in August, I did an OS update on my iMac, and the machine wouldn't reboot. I was able to reinstall Leopard by booting from a disk, and all was well for a few more weeks. The machine seemed to run normal, with the exception of 5-minute-plus boot up times. But within a few weeks it stopped booting. I installed Leopard on an external HDD and figured I'd leave the internal alone until Snow Leopard came out.
A few weeks later when SL was released, I booted from the install disk, found the internal HDD, and went through the installation process. Everything went fine but the machine would not boot. I installed SL on my external HDD running Leopard, and everything was fine. I've since been running my computer off the external.
The internal HDD no longer shows up on the desktop, in Disk Utility, etc. I'm fearing it may have died. More worrisome, though, is my machine doesn't always boot up, whether from my external HDD (set as the startup disk) or from CD. By "doesn't always boot up," I mean most of the time when I restart, it just sits on a gray screen, nothing happens (even when holding "Option" or C.) Sometimes it will boot, but takes 20 or 30 minutes to do so.
I'm considering replacing the internal HDD, but am curious, does that seem like the issue, or might the failure to boot from externals and CDs indicate a more serious problem?
I have the CD version of tiger and am trying to install it to a recently purchased iMac G3. The Installer installs disc 1, resets, but doesn't boot up to install disc 2, it simply asks again to install disc 1. The Mac for some reason will not boot from the installed software and therefore I cannot complete installation. Can anyone figure out why the mac refuses to boot from the HD in order to install disc 2?

When I look at "About This Mac" it says that I have a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I originally had two 1GB sticks. When I installed two 2GB RAM sticks, it wouldn't boot. Just for fun, I tried putting one 2GB and one 1GB stick inside, and it boots fine.
[URL] says that I can have up to 4GB: [URL]
But the guides say that it depends on if I have Merom w/ Santa Rosa chipset or not:[URL]
But I read somewhere else that even if I install two 2GB sticks that it will just ignore the power of the second one and default to 3GB.
I found this beautiful 17" eMac at a yard sale! it is pristine I fell in love. I went about removing the stuff left behind by the old owner. Now it does not boot.
After a while I get the question mark on a folder. I know what I did but not how to get out of it. I have no OS X disk to start it from. What do I do now? I did try to reset some things but no good.
I am finding conflicting information when I search but can a new iMac boot from a USB drive?

I have a 15" Imac G4 I bought used off of Ebay. It was doing great and then I clicked to look for updates. So it downloaded a 168mb file to update 10.4 to 10.4.1 It automatically tried installing, but then said it couldn't install and that it was moved into the trash. So I took it out of the trash and dragged it on my desktop. Then when I went to turn the computer on, it only shows the grey screen!

My computer had 1GB of RAM, so I just bought a 2GB RAM card. When I installed both cards together i can hear the hard drive start up and then nothing, no boot up, just a black screen and the "sleep" light is just solid. I know both cards are fine because I tested each by themselves and they both started up and worked well, its only when they are both in at the same time does it do this. also both slots work because i tested both of them! I tried to do the PRAM reset and it doesnt work, and I tried to do it with one card in and then reset and then shutdown and install the 2nd card and still nothing. Please give me some advice, i am soooo frustrated!!
