OS X :: IMac Does Not Boot After RAM Upgrade?
Jun 8, 2008
iMac intel core duo...
My computer had 1GB of RAM, so I just bought a 2GB RAM card. When I installed both cards together i can hear the hard drive start up and then nothing, no boot up, just a black screen and the "sleep" light is just solid. I know both cards are fine because I tested each by themselves and they both started up and worked well, its only when they are both in at the same time does it do this. also both slots work because i tested both of them! I tried to do the PRAM reset and it doesnt work, and I tried to do it with one card in and then reset and then shutdown and install the 2nd card and still nothing. Please give me some advice, i am soooo frustrated!!

So I have XP installed on my 27" iMac, and that's is cool news. I also have a windows 7 professional upgrade disk, that bootcamp won't recognize. I would just blow away that partition and put 7 on. I don't care for any of my data on the XP install, I just want to get 7 on there with an upgrade disk.
How can I boot from the upgrade disk inside XP? Or is there another way?
If I try and install from inside XP it tells me it can only be done (configuration sets) from Windows PE (Preinstall enviroment)
as in I need to be booted from the disk.
How do I accomplish this? I also have a 2009 late iMac, which means that the video drivers don't work out correctly, but I already remedied that with making the video driver usb drive that fixes the issue. I just need to figure out how to get to the point to install.

Just bought a fantastic condition deep-blue 500 MHz G3 DV iMac yesterday for 15. Steal! The original hard drive was knackered so I've replaced it with an 80gb 5400RPM one which should be more than adequate. I'm aiming to get OS X on it. My 350 MHz G3 runs is well, so this should scream. Unfortunately, OS9.0 and OS9.1 disks in the optical drive still produce a flashing folder icon. I need to boot OS9.0 in order to flash the iMac's firmware before I can stick OS X on it, but it just won't boot at all. I'm thinking it could possibly be a knackered optical drive, but before I go to the trouble of finding a workaround, I wondered if anybody here might have some ideas.

I have a 2 week old iMac 27", i7, 2tb Hard Drive, 16gb RM
In the second week the boot up times became very slow.
I would turn the machine on and get the chime within 5 seconds or so.
Then just a black/blank screen.
Eventually after about 10mins I would get a white screen then it would boot up normally.
Now the machine just doesn't get to the white screen. So I get the chime and then just darkness. It does sound like the machine is on (usual quiet imac whirring).
I've tried various key commands when I turn the machine on including pressing C with the install disk in the dvd drive and the alt, control, P, R pram reset.
I've also tried unplugging all the cables, leaving the machine for a minute and switching back on. I did manage to perform the PRAM reset once. I reset the machine and it booted fine.
But now when I switch it on just darkness.
I've called after sales and will try to get the machine replaced but in the meantime is there anything I could try that might make the machine work? I need to do a remix this weekend (deadline Monday) so really need to get it working.

Just got my MacBook Air back from a certified Apple repair shop - I'd had maintenance done, including upgrading to Mavericks (10.9.3). Plugged it in, started it up and never got beyond the startup screen - Apple logo and spinning wheel after 5, 8, 10 minutes...
Tried starting in Safe Mode, but once the load bar progresses about 1/5 of the way, the bar disappears, the wheel spins and then the screen goes black.

i just upgraded my MBP13 with 4gb and a 500 Hitachi drive. the process went smoothly. i didnt quite understand the time machine OSX reinstall process, i was mostly afraid of having to re-install every other programs. So i went the easy way and downloaded super duper to clone my drive and did the switch.
it use to take around 25-30sec to boot. now it takes more like 45+. I also noticed a few setting had changed after the upgrade. namely, little snitch (i think..) was opening a window showing me inbound transfers, my desktop image was reset and other small things like that. is it all normal? is there anything i should do to speed the boot time?
another note, there is a cd in the drive at boot, but its always there as it was when the boot time was faster. i just dont have anything to put it in so it seems like the best option to always keep it there.

I have a mid-2010 13" Macbook Pro. I wanted to upgrade to 8G of ram so I bought this: url...When it arrived in the mail I installed it and booted the laptop. The apple logo comes up, the spinner starts spinning and then after awhile freezes. I figured that I recieved bad RAM so I sent it back to apple and they sent me new memory. I installed the new ram and the same thing happened again. Booting in verbose mode (Apple-V) doesn't give anything useful. This time I decided to run memory tests. I booted into single user mode (which sees 8G of memory and works fine) and ran memtest overnight. It ran 6 or 7 passes without finding any memory errors. My next plan is to try to my DVD reinstall/repair the OS to see if that will help but I don't want to do that because I would have to downgrade to Snow Lepoard and then reinstall Lion and that takes long enough to try to avoid.

I was upgrading rame in my 2011 mac mini and removed the first module without incident but upon removing the second module the clip on the left broke and upon trying to reseat the 2 new ram modules so I could at least boot my mac the lower one is loose (which I expected but upon inserting the top one the clips did not grip it and not they are both stuck loosely in the mac mini which will not boot.
After having installed rame in a PC laptop and my mac ro I have had 2 successful ram upgrades so was not impressed to find that the ram upgrade process in the mini has some really bad clips.
So now what do I do and to complicate things even further there is some stuff on the mini I need.

Prior to upgrading to Lion I used SuperDuper to create a copy of the existing internal hard drive on an new external drive (iOmega eGo 500GB). Tested booting from the external disk and it appeared to work correctly. Upgraded to Lion. Several days later attempted to boot from the external disk (by setting the start up disk in the system preferences) but it fails. The system always boots into Lion.
What I've tried: Setting the start up disk through system preferences. Holding down the option key to select a disk on startup - interestingly enough I only see the internal hard disk and a recover HD. No sign of my external disk. Using a clean partition on the external hard drive I installed SL from the retail DVD. This produces the same effect of system booting to Lion on the internal drive, which suggests that the problem is not related to the copy I made using SuperDuper, but rather has to do with the external drive or something in Lion that prevents using an external drive (but I've never heard of such a thing).

Lion 10.7.4

I have an Intel Macbook with 10.4.11 running, and I wanted to upgrade to Snow Leopard. I've heard that the $29 upgrade disc will work with 10.4, and I have a couple questions.
1. I lost the original 10.4 install disc that came with my computer - would that be a problem?
2. I'm in a college CS program, and I'd like to be able to dual boot Windows onto the laptop. I think in order to do that, I have to do a clean install of OS X after installing Windows - can I do that with the upgrade disc?

I have an issue with selecting (restart). If i choose restart after a software update, from the apple drop down, or when i select the drive in startup disk in preferences, it will boot into a gray screen with ? mark. if i choose (shut down) from apple drop down menu and then start up from the power button on the air, it boots up with no problem. I have checked with the SSD maker and i have the latest firmware I cannot use the old HD to see if it is a drive issue. Its dead.

I have a Imac PPC with a 2Ghz processor and 1GB of Ram. I am running leopard 10.5.8. Recently i woke the PC from sleep mode to find a blue screen with only the cursor working. Using the internet, I determined how to get the PC booted in safe mode. I have used all the disk utilities at my disposal along with onyx and cocktail to try and fix what I believe is a startup problem. I hae booted the PC in single user mode and tried the fskc codes, which i believe is just the same as the disk utility. Based on my computer all permissions are correct and there is nothing wrong with the HD. The PC still will not boot normally. I have even done an archive and re-install of Leopard.

Not sure if this has been ask before. I've installed Windows XP professional (service pack 2) a while ago on my macbook pro so that I can use CAD and Revit.Every time I try to get windows to update to service pack 3 through windows updates in the control pannel it gets to a certain early stage and this error occurs:The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. This seems to be a problem due to the mac partition I think as I've looked around to solve the problem but nothing seems to work. I've tried changing the AppleMNT.sys file in the drivers folder as one message board suggests but sadly that file does not exist on my windows partition.

i accidentally hit the power switch on the wall during an upgrade (might even have been a firmware upgrade, I didn't really look at what was going on). Anyway, now it hangs on the silver Apple logo screen with a spinny wheel on reboot. It's only 3 months old, it's the $599 model.
What to do? I see that you can download firmware restoration disks but they appear to be limited to earlier versions of the Mac mini.

I think it worked at one point, but sometime around the point when I set up Fusion with the partition, Windows Aero turned off and is no longer an option in the display settings. I installed this driver with the modded INF to see if it would do anything, but Aero is still not an option. I also have issues playing some games in Fusion, while they work fine in Boot Camp.

I'm using a 20" white intel iMac and cannot manage to remove a linux boot disc from the optical drive. At first, the only way that i managed to boot to the linux disc in the first place was from the Startup Disk menu in OSX. I could not even get to the Startup Manager ('opt' at boot) or boot straight to the disc ('C').Now i'm in a position where no matter what i do, the system boots to the linux disc. I cannot even force the startup into OSX to try to eject the disc from there. I've tried holding all of these keys/combinations at startup

Back in August, I did an OS update on my iMac, and the machine wouldn't reboot. I was able to reinstall Leopard by booting from a disk, and all was well for a few more weeks. The machine seemed to run normal, with the exception of 5-minute-plus boot up times. But within a few weeks it stopped booting. I installed Leopard on an external HDD and figured I'd leave the internal alone until Snow Leopard came out.
A few weeks later when SL was released, I booted from the install disk, found the internal HDD, and went through the installation process. Everything went fine but the machine would not boot. I installed SL on my external HDD running Leopard, and everything was fine. I've since been running my computer off the external.
The internal HDD no longer shows up on the desktop, in Disk Utility, etc. I'm fearing it may have died. More worrisome, though, is my machine doesn't always boot up, whether from my external HDD (set as the startup disk) or from CD. By "doesn't always boot up," I mean most of the time when I restart, it just sits on a gray screen, nothing happens (even when holding "Option" or C.) Sometimes it will boot, but takes 20 or 30 minutes to do so.
I'm considering replacing the internal HDD, but am curious, does that seem like the issue, or might the failure to boot from externals and CDs indicate a more serious problem?

I have the CD version of tiger and am trying to install it to a recently purchased iMac G3. The Installer installs disc 1, resets, but doesn't boot up to install disc 2, it simply asks again to install disc 1. The Mac for some reason will not boot from the installed software and therefore I cannot complete installation. Can anyone figure out why the mac refuses to boot from the HD in order to install disc 2?

I am looking to upgrade the RAM in my iMac. The Model is iMac (Late-2006) 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo/2 GB RAM/Radeon x1600 256 MB/20" Widescreen. I am looking to go from 2 GB of ram to 4 GB, first off, before I would buy the ram, will this computer support it? And if it does will any of these RAM's work? [URL]. I'm not gonna spend a whole lot of money, probably from $60-80 no more than that...so long as I am guaranteed the RAM will work when I install it. Because lets face it, my system is out dating fast and I'm not buying a new comp for a long time.
