IMac :: 27" Wont's Boot Up / Takes A Very Long Time To Boot?

May 15, 2010

I have a 2 week old iMac 27", i7, 2tb Hard Drive, 16gb RM

In the second week the boot up times became very slow.

I would turn the machine on and get the chime within 5 seconds or so.

Then just a black/blank screen.

Eventually after about 10mins I would get a white screen then it would boot up normally.

Now the machine just doesn't get to the white screen. So I get the chime and then just darkness. It does sound like the machine is on (usual quiet imac whirring).

I've tried various key commands when I turn the machine on including pressing C with the install disk in the dvd drive and the alt, control, P, R pram reset.

I've also tried unplugging all the cables, leaving the machine for a minute and switching back on. I did manage to perform the PRAM reset once. I reset the machine and it booted fine.

But now when I switch it on just darkness.

I've called after sales and will try to get the machine replaced but in the meantime is there anything I could try that might make the machine work? I need to do a remix this weekend (deadline Monday) so really need to get it working.

OS X :: Computer Takes Long Time To Boot Up

May 3, 2010

My computer takes pretty long time to boot up and even though there is not much under /Library/StartupItems/ it still takes too much time.

mbp:~ alexus$ ls -la /Library/StartupItems/
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 6 root wheel 204 May 3 13:18 ./
drwxrwxr-t+ 70 root admin 2380 Mar 12 11:42 ../

drwxr-xr-x 5 root wheel 170 Sep 23 2009 tap/
drwxr-xr-x 5 root wheel 170 Sep 23 2009 tun/
mbp:~ alexus$

Where else I can look what's being executed upon boot? because under process I see BlackBerry's Daemon (I'm no longer BlackBerry user, I'm okay to leave Application, but I don't want it to boot up during startup) and I'm pretty sure there is other stuff as well.

Windows On Mac :: Parallels Boot Time - Why Does It Take So Long

Oct 1, 2009

I hit "Start" in Parallels to boot Windows, it takes like 1:45 min till I see the wallpaper on my desktop. I use Windows 7 on Parallels. I remember it also took about the same time for XP Pro to load on my Parallels/VMWare before. Why does it take so long?? Does it also take so much time to boot for you guys? If I boot my Windows through Bootcamp (not Parallels) though, it only takes like 45-50 secs for the desktop wallpaper to display

Mac Pro :: Long Boot Time Caused By HD With Windows Install?

Dec 26, 2010

I had a spare drive bay in my Mac Pro, so decided to install an extra HD, partition into two, and put on Windows XP on one partition and Windows 7 on the other.

I've now done this. I didn't install using Bootcamp, since it doesn't support two Windows partitions on the same drive, so I removed all my Mac HDs and then installed both versions of Windows as though installing on any other PC, only using Bootcamp to install the Windows drivers after.

The Windows HD is formatted NTFS with MBR partition scheme. With my three Mac OS drives (1 system, 1 Audio Data, 1 Timemachine) now back in, everything is now working, with holding the option key on startup giving me the choice between Mac OS and Windows. Selecting Windows brings up the Windows 7 boot menu, with the option to boot into XP or 7.

The only problem is that boot up now takes an extremely long time, and the part of the sequence that is taking a long time is worrying me.

When you press the power on button, you get the boing as normal, but it's now about 50 seconds from the boing until you see the grey startup screen (or boot menu if you are holding option). Once into the grey screen, start up time is as it was before.

Is this normal behaviour with three normal HFS+ and one MBR NTFS drive with two Windows partitions in a Mac?

I have tried resetting the PRAM but it made no difference.

If it's normal, I suppose I can put up with it, but it would be great if I could do something about it.

This is a 2009 Mac Pro, Quad 2.66 GHz, 5GB RAM.

MacBook Air :: 13" Is Taking A Very Long Time To Boot-up?

Apr 14, 2012

My daughter purchased a MacBook Air 13" last 1.7 GH Intel Core i5, 4GB Memory. A couple of weeks ago, my daughter noticed that her computer was taking a long time to boot up. Apparently the bootup time has progressively lengthened to 3 - 5 minutes to get to her desktop. What happens is the boot-up process seems to stall on a grey screen and beach-balls until the desktop eventually appears.

IMac :: Computer Now Takes About 2 Minutes To Boot Up After Installed Snow Leopard?

Sep 2, 2009

Have my iMac since March and absolutely no problem. Installed Snow Leopard this weekend and worked just perfect UNTIL I turned the machine off. The next day restarted my computer and now takes about 2 minutes to boot up/then when screen comes up it is frozen for about another 2-3 minutes before can start using it. So basically, takes about 5 minutes from start up to being able to use my iMac. Spent an hour on phone with Apple on Monday night--they really tried--but couldn't fix it and now want me to bring to local Apple authorize dealer to work on it. Called them and they think it is the hard drive going out. But just doesn't make sense---worked just fine until I loaded 10.6 and then turned off machine. Before I bring it in and have them open it up and fool with the internal hard drive---DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA'S WHAT IS HOLDING UP THE STARTUP.

IMac :: G5 Won't Boot - Invalid Memory Access At 0SRRO (then A Long Address)

Nov 7, 2010

My 17" ALS Imac is not booting (tiger OS). I will preface this by stating the hard drive has been whining and making a lot of noise for the past year or two. Anyway, a few days ago it froze up and I had to pull the power plug. I tried to restart and got a plain gray screen and saw a question mark. Now when I try to retsart I get a plain gray screen with the following message:

Invalid memory access at: 0SRRO: (then a long address)
WELCOME TO OPEN FIRMWARE
To continue booting type "mac-boot"
To shut down type "shut down"

After I type mac-boot the hard drive (or cd drive?) starts racing quite loudly and then it freezes up and displays a grayish screen with dozens of short, yellowish, horizontal lines and I have to pull the plug again. I have been anticipating a hard driver failure for a while so at first assumed that was the problem, but now I see this memory error and am not so sure. I was planning to purchase a 1 TB drive and maybe upgrade the OS at the same time . Basically I am wondering if I should go ahead and do this or run some additional diagnostics first in case it's something else?

OS X :: Mac Takes A Long Time Logging In

Aug 6, 2010

Basically I have a MacBook Pro which logs in fine when I'm at work but when I'm on my home network it takes like 5 minutes to authenticate. All appearances are that it's trying to reach my work network to authenticate. Short of disabling wireless or having it prompt for my home network password before joining wireless, is there any way that I can either shorten the timeout or have it bypass network authentication when I'm at home?

Mac Pro :: It Takes Long Time To Start Up

Mar 30, 2012

My Mac Pro takes two minutes to start up.  It is also sluggish during normal operation.  I have Parallels and a external hard drive installed. Do either of these contribute to this problem? Or is there a program that can be used to defrag the hard drive. (I recall having similar problems with my IBM computer.  When it was defragged the performance of the unit improved).

OS X :: Since 10.6.3, Ssh W/x11 Forwarding Takes A Long Time To Connect?

Apr 12, 2010

I'm not sure if the OS upgrade to 10.6.3 is involved or not, but I've noticed that all of a sudden, ssh connections to my Linux box would take like 30 seconds before I'd get a prompt. I tried lots of different things to resolve the problem, but what finally worked was disabling "-Y", forwarding X11. Can anyone give any insight into this and help me resolve it so that I can forward X11 without the connection taking forever to establish?

Software :: Takes Long Time While Booting

Apr 29, 2008

so a few days ago I tried to install a package of new fonts using font-book. I tried to (stupidly) install something like 1500 fonts at one time, which eventually crashed my machine. When I restarted my computer, it loaded all the way to the desktop where it stalled for like 10mins and then eventually started working OK. Now everytime I restart it, the same thing happens- I get to the desktop and all that loads for the first 10 mins is the little search icon in the top right corner. I tried the restore disks and used the 'store everything in a "previous system" file' option because I am really trying to avoid a clean erase. I've also tried clearing my cache and doing a nvram clear. Nothing has worked so far. The computer is acting like it is doing a lot of extra work in the background but I can't figure out what. I am tempted to think it might have something to do with some junky fonts I tried to install but that sounds too simple. I am running a g5 Imac on 10.4.11.

Now every time I turn on the airport card it literally takes like a minute to find any networks. That doesn't seem like a long time but next time you open your macbook see how long it takes to find networks. What should I do? Also when ever I click on the airport logo it says it is constantly scanning. Even when i am connected to a network.

Any ideas besides firefox sucks?
