Hardware :: Gigabit Ethernet/Firewire 800 To Share Video Using Airport Extreme Base Station?

Jul 11, 2010

I want to put all my media (mainly music and movies) on an external hard drive.

It will be connected to MacMini media server using Plex. Then I wish to share to a MBP over the network (using Airport Extreme Base station).

Question is what is faster?:
1) a Firewire 800 hard drive connected directly to the MacMini then shared over the network?

2) or a Network hard drive connected directly to the Airport Extreme via CAT5e/CAT6, then shared over the network?

Given the size of some video files I have (High def movies 4GB+) I'd like the smoothest and fastest transfer rate.

Really confused welcome any suggestions!

Hardware :: PS3 + Airport Extreme + Imac + Ethernet - Fail?

Feb 13, 2009

Bt homehub shoots the internet wirelessly to my next room, to the Airport extreme. This airport extreme sits next to a ps3 and an external network Hard drive (see model below). Basically, I want to be able to dump files from my imac into the other room on this Hardrive, whilst my Ps3 being able to access the Hardrive as usual. Unfrotunately, I can only get the ps3 or the airport extreme to connect to my hardrive through the USB slot. As the HD only has one USB slot, this means I can only use one at a time! Neither of the devices will see the Harddrive when it is plugged in by ethernet alone.. How can i make it so i can use the harddrive with my airport extreme AND my ps3 at the same time?

Hard drive model:
Freecom 30725 1TB NAS Drive Hi-Speed USB/Ethernet 10/100
brand new Imac with latest airport extreme

OS X :: IMac - Loss Of Both Ethernet & Airport Internet Access

Mar 6, 2009

I have a 24" iMac that has completely all of a sudden stopped wanting to connect to the internet. However, my Macbook, connected to the same ethernet cord or wireless network, works flawlessly and has no trouble. The iMac will find the wireless network...show full bars...then drop a bar....then another bar, then another, until only the smallest bar is available. It will transfer data but only for a few seconds until it wont work at all. Now the macbook, sitting right next to the imac will show full bars and stay that way. So i tried a ethernet cable to the iMac and it will not even pull up 1 single page, but the same cable connected to my Macbook will work flawlessly.

OS X :: Share Prewired Ethernet Connection Wirelessly

Sep 20, 2010

So I have just moved into a new flat in the centre of Sheffield UK. We are in the process of sorting out the best internet connection possible and it seems to be the pre wired connections that are in the bedrooms which are at 50Mb/sec... great. BUT! We want to share this wirelessly and as the only connection is via this walled socket (See attached photo) I don't know how to do it. It is not a standard BT wall socket but instead is something that an rj45 cable can plug into. Currently I have set up a wireless network by putting an rj45 cable from the wall directly into my mac mini and have set up internet sharing however this means that if I wanted to move or turn off my computer the wireless network would be lost! I have tried already connecting a current wireless router that I have (a Zyxel p-661hw-d1) but there is no dsl connection and therefore no internet. Would I need a wireless bridge? Just so you know the ISP is called Ask4, google it and you get to the homepage.

Hardware :: Share Printer Through Ethernet Network?

May 17, 2009

This looked like the best place to post this. I have two computers in my home, a 20" iMac with Leopard and a Desktop Dell with XP. There is an usb printer connected to the Dell, but its upstairs. The computers are connected through an ethernet cable. I was wondering if there was a way to print archives from the iMac to the usb printer. What i have been doing is either sharing the files and inserting them to a shared folder on windows xp or sending them to myself via email. I find both processes extremely annoying and boring, and would rather instead just directly send a command to the printer.

OS X :: Configuring AirPort Express Over Ethernet

Jan 7, 2010

I am attempting to set up a wireless network with an AirPort Express in order to access the Internet from my iPod touch. My computer is a 2002 PowerBook G4/667 running OS X 10.4.11 (the latest OS it can run), and according to an Apple Store Genus, either the AirPort card or the AirPort antenna is shot, rendering the PowerBook useless as a wireless device. Adding to the pain, my cable modem has only one Ethernet port. Hence, I have purchased a Belkin F5D5050 USB/Ethernet adapter (and installed USBPegasusEthernet 1.0.9 as a kernel extension to make it work).

Which I plan to use to connect the AirPort Express to the computer (via the Ethernet port on the Express and the USB port on the PowerBook). The modem would be connected via Ethernet directly to the PowerBook's sole Ethernet port. Everything I read on the Internet says that I should be able to configure the AirPort Express over Ethernet via AirPort Admin Utility, but the utility doesn't seem to see the Express, even if I directly connect them to each other (one Ethernet port to the other). How I could make my network operational?

Hardware :: AirPort Express And Ethernet LAN

Feb 10, 2010

I apparently have a unique situation. My ethernet connection, if that is what it even is, comes out of the wall. No connection, nothing like that, it just goes into the wall, and disappears. They told me on the phone it's a LAN. I have my IP, Subnet, default gateway, and DNS numbers. When I plug the cord into my computer, using the IP4 thing, it works fine. I have to put the numbers in myself, no big deal.

Then I plug my APE in, and go into the utility to try to set it up. I enter all of those numbers. But run into all kinds of problems. Vista has no probs connecting my comp up to the airport, but airport has probs getting onto the net. I have fiddled around for hours trying to enter the numbers differently, but with no luck.

OS X :: Airport Extreme Setup - Modem - Ethernet

Dec 1, 2010

Upon getting my iPad and being unable to stream much without huge wait times, I've decided to take the plunge and get an Airport Extreme. Well, it arrived today, but alas it seems that I need a modem and Ethernet cord! Now, in my defense, I've been using a router that is both a modem and a router for years -- and it connected straight to the cable jack, so I didn't know that most routers needed a separate modem unit and Ethernet cord! Any way, it's too late to head out now so I'm going to have to wait till tomorrow to stream my precious netflix -- but I want to get it right this time; so...

I need an ethernet cord to connect the router and modem, right? The Modem/Router I've been using is called the SBG900 Wireless Surfboard Gateway. In my experience, the speeds have been dismal, but I should be able to use this as my modem -- right? Will it be slower than if I bought a separate modem? Does the modem even effect the speed of your internet or is that just the router?

OS X :: Print Over Airport While Receiving Internet Through Ethernet?

Dec 2, 2008

So here is my problem: Originally I had an airport express set up to broadcast a wireless network. I had a printer plugged into the airport express. I also had an ethernet cord going into the airport express. When I was connected to the network, I could surf the internet just fine, and was able to set up the printer just fine as well. I then decided that I was not getting fast enough speeds wirelessly with my b/g airport express network, so I unplugged the ethernet cord from the airport express and connected it directly to my mac. With this setup I was able to surf the internet over ethernet, but even though I was connected to the airport express network I was not able to print. It would always give me errors... I read somewhere about how it looks at one service first or something... so I tried moving Airport to the top of the services in System Preferences, but that just made it so my internet didn't work. How can I print over the airport network and use the internet via ethernet at the same time?
