We are trying to share an ethernet connection over airport, however I cant seem to get airport to appear in the 'to computers using' list.
So I have just moved into a new flat in the centre of Sheffield UK. We are in the process of sorting out the best internet connection possible and it seems to be the pre wired connections that are in the bedrooms which are at 50Mb/sec... great. BUT! We want to share this wirelessly and as the only connection is via this walled socket (See attached photo) I don't know how to do it. It is not a standard BT wall socket but instead is something that an rj45 cable can plug into. Currently I have set up a wireless network by putting an rj45 cable from the wall directly into my mac mini and have set up internet sharing however this means that if I wanted to move or turn off my computer the wireless network would be lost! I have tried already connecting a current wireless router that I have (a Zyxel p-661hw-d1) but there is no dsl connection and therefore no internet. Would I need a wireless bridge? Just so you know the ISP is called Ask4, google it and you get to the homepage.

My internet company is crap so I need to find a way to cut out the router, which I have to reset all the time to get a normal internet speed.
Desktop is a Mac Pro bought last April, and the laptop is a 12" Powerbook G4. Both have bluetooth, airport, and the newest operating system.

I've got a Mac Pro and a Linksys Wireless N Router. I've got my cable modem hooked up at the moment directly to my Mac Pro. I was wondering if there was a way to share my internet connection on my other connection to the router? In other words, internet comes into the Mac Pro, shares with the wireless router, which broadcasts it to a third computer.

I've got 11+GB of free space left on my hard drive and Safari or Firefox are the only applications I have open. I have a Time Capsule wirelessly connected to my iMac. Since I've encountered some problems with backups because of intermittent wifi connection failures, I want to switch to a wired connection with an ethernet cable. I know I could fiddle with the wifi channels etc. but since the TC is just sitting next to my iMac anyway, I could profit from the higher bandwidth of a wired connection as well.Two questions:
1. What exactly do I have to do to make the switch? Are there any new settings I have to apply? Create a new network?
2. Will I still be able to use the wifi connection to get on the internet using my smartphone?
OK, I asked this question previously, but not quite succinct enough, I think. I have a Pioneer home theater receiver that is network capable, but not wireless capable. I want to get this thing on my home network without having to purchase another device as my Mini resides no more than 36" away from it.So far, I have been able to get the receiver to connect to the internet through Internet Sharing on the Mini, but it remains blind to, and invisible to my wireless network. I have added a new switch to my network and it seems that ethernet port 1 does not work on this new switch. My network consist of dhcp server>switch 1>switch 2. Switch 1 is in my entertainment center and had ethernet port 1 connected to this switch since I have had my computer but when plugged into switch 2 which I have just added to my workstation and on the switch there is no lights and in system preferences port 1 flashes between not connected and no ip address. For port 2 it connects fine and both ports are set for dhcp. I have tried different cables setting a static address and can not find a reason why it won't work.

I just noticed today that my wireless connection on my Macbook Pro has been losing it's connection about every other 2-3 minutes. I was on iChat with a buddy this morning, and I must have been disconnected and then reconnected about 8 times in 20 minutes. I first thought it must have been a problem with iChat. That said, I have sat here looking at my screen for the past ten minutes, and I have seen the Airport wireless indicator disconnect and then reconnect again at least three times in the past ten minutes.
I have AT&T U-Verse Service, and I am forced to use their provided 2WIRE router. That said, I have had no problems with any other device that uses the wireless connection, from my iPhone to my PS3. I work from home and have my HP laptop literally sitting right next to my Macbook, and it has not disconnected once from the same wireless connection, whereas my Macbook has literally disconnected at least 20 times.
This looked like the best place to post this. I have two computers in my home, a 20" iMac with Leopard and a Desktop Dell with XP. There is an usb printer connected to the Dell, but its upstairs. The computers are connected through an ethernet cable. I was wondering if there was a way to print archives from the iMac to the usb printer. What i have been doing is either sharing the files and inserting them to a shared folder on windows xp or sending them to myself via email. I find both processes extremely annoying and boring, and would rather instead just directly send a command to the printer.

I realized that I could connect the Powerbook to the MacPro with an ethernet cable, given that the MacPro has two ethernet ports. Yesterday I bought a new MacBook Pro 13" and as a store option the RAM was doubled to 4GB. Everything has worked well so far, in both OS X and Windows XP through Boot Camp, except for either OS accessing the LAN cable on my home ADSL. Both my portable modem (EMobile network in Japan) and the wireless seem to work with no issue, and both OS will recognize the ethernet port. I'm concerned that perhaps the ethernet adapter was modified when the store installed the memory.
I can remove the ethernet cable from one computer (where it works without any settings changes on my Windows notebook) and plug the same cable into the MacBook and it will not be recognized. The Mac OS error is that no cable is inserted.
However, as it's my first Mac, I didn't know if perhaps some new settings are required to make things work smoothly. Is there any DNS settings etc. that must be set for it to connect? Also is there some kind of connection diagnostic that will specify the location of the error in the machine? I'd like to exhaust any option before shipping this back to the store to be repaired or replaced.

I've had it working for my Xbox previously and it worked fine. Only lag experienced was when I was surfing on the MacBook at the same time.
I want to put all my media (mainly music and movies) on an external hard drive.
It will be connected to MacMini media server using Plex. Then I wish to share to a MBP over the network (using Airport Extreme Base station).
Question is what is faster?:
1) a Firewire 800 hard drive connected directly to the MacMini then shared over the network?
2) or a Network hard drive connected directly to the Airport Extreme via CAT5e/CAT6, then shared over the network?
Given the size of some video files I have (High def movies 4GB+) I'd like the smoothest and fastest transfer rate.
