Nov 5, 2010how do i tell safari to use my wireless connection instead of ethernet?
at work my mac pro is connected to our company network via ethernet. but i also have a verizon dsl connection via airport. i only want safari to use my airport connection, and everything else to be using the company network via ethernet. for the life of my i can't figure this out. i have searched the interwebs high and low.

Mar 21, 2008I am running an Ethernet (hardwired) connection from my Comcast modem to a Netgear WNR834B v.2 router then to my iMac 20" 2.16Ghz (previous white version)'s Ethernet port. I did this because I have been experiencing slow connection and frequent drop-outs (gets disconnects frequetnly when playing WC3). Now that the same problem still exists when using this wired setup. Whenever I open up Safari and go to a webpage , the page hangs while loading, and it will take about 10~20 seconds to get the page fully loaded with pictures and everything else. If I unplug the Ethernet cable that goes to the iMac from the router, and then plug it into the modem (so that my iMac is connected to the modem directly), the connection speed is blazing fast, and the webpages would fully load in no time. Therefore I am wondering what might be the cause of the slow Ethernet connection? Is it my router since that connection speed is super fast when connecting to the modem directly?

OS X :: Internet Connection Difficulty With Both Ethernet Cable And AirPort?
Mar 24, 2009I connect to the internet mainly through an ethernet cable, connected to my own base for ethernet connections (Might be a router, but doesn't connect directly to the internet) which is connected to the main Linksys router on the other side of my house, which even has a wireless connection.
Regardless, this setup has worked without issue for a long time now, but all of a sudden now, I cannot connect to the internet (On my Mac).
I have tried unplugging the routers, for extended periods of time, plugging them back in, but I cannot connect to the internet. Whats awkward, is that when I check the Network settings in the System Preferences, it says clearly is that the Ethernet Cable is connected (Which it is), and as a backup, I have even connected to my Wireless Network through AirPort (Which says it is connected), but I cannot connect to the internet through Firefox, or any instant messaging service.
On the main computer, with the main router, the internet works fine. When I try to load Firefox on my Mac, it sometimes takes a long time loading (On a blank screen), and never loads usually (With occasional loads, but usually does not connect).

The HD does not support a USB connection and I already have another HD connected to the Airport Extreme via the USB port. I am also working off of a PC laptop.

Jan 26, 2010I recently purchased (as in days ago) a refurbished 13" Macbook Pro. I just noticed today that my wireless connection on my Macbook Pro has been losing it's connection about every other 2-3 minutes. I was on iChat with a buddy this morning, and I must have been disconnected and then reconnected about 8 times in 20 minutes. I first thought it must have been a problem with iChat. That said, I have sat here looking at my screen for the past ten minutes, and I have seen the Airport wireless indicator disconnect and then reconnect again at least three times in the past ten minutes.
I have AT&T U-Verse Service, and I am forced to use their provided 2WIRE router. That said, I have had no problems with any other device that uses the wireless connection, from my iPhone to my PS3. I work from home and have my HP laptop literally sitting right next to my Macbook, and it has not disconnected once from the same wireless connection, whereas my Macbook has literally disconnected at least 20 times.

Feb 23, 2010I just got a time capsule and replaced my extreme with it then added my 2 expresses to the network. Was getting 28-33mbps download speeds using speedtest.net to test now i'm getting only 4-6mbps. WTH!!! Also the transfer rate for backing up my macbook to the tc drive is ridiculous!!!

Jul 29, 2010Two computers in the house MacBook and iMac, running on an Airport Extreme network, which includes an Airport Express plugged into the stereo.
A brief power outage the other night (perhaps unrelated), and in the morning, the network was wonky: the iMac was only getting two or three bars, streaming radio to the Express kept flickering on and off. When that happens, rebooting the Airport base station, the router, and the Express usually takes care of it.
Since the reboot, the iMac hasn't been able to keep a connection to the network, and often can't find it. It may start off, but then loses the connection and then times out trying to reconnect. Or the network doesn't even appear in the list. Read that launching Network and running Diagnostic will fix problems and it sometimes does, but never for long.
All this time except for one brief bit where it suffered the same problem the MacBook has had no problem connecting to the network and the Internet.
Have rebooted everything multiple times in various orders, run Disk Utility, and even gone ahead and upgraded the iMac to Snow Leopard (laptop was recently upgraded).
OS X :: Won't Work With Airport Connection / Loses Connection
Dec 8, 2009Recently my MBP (mid-09) has had issues with airport as it continually loses connection and I have to turn it off and on again in order for it to work again sometimes within seconds of doing so. I would opt for a fresh install but my dvd drive seems to be scratching the dvds and it rendered my Windows XP DVD useless when I tried to install that. So it wouldnt be ideal unless there is a method of doing so without using the dvd drive.

Jun 14, 2009 I used the MacRumors Buyer's Guide for several months to find the best time to buy a MacBook. I'd never had a Mac before and found it to be so valuable. I hope someone in the forum can be as helpful as the site has been.
Yesterday I bought a new MacBook Pro 13" and as a store option the RAM was doubled to 4GB. Everything has worked well so far, in both OS X and Windows XP through Boot Camp, except for either OS accessing the LAN cable on my home ADSL. Both my portable modem (EMobile network in Japan) and the wireless seem to work with no issue, and both OS will recognize the ethernet port. I'm concerned that perhaps the ethernet adapter was modified when the store installed the memory.
I can remove the ethernet cable from one computer (where it works without any settings changes on my Windows notebook) and plug the same cable into the MacBook and it will not be recognized. The Mac OS error is that no cable is inserted.
However, as it's my first Mac, I didn't know if perhaps some new settings are required to make things work smoothly. Is there any DNS settings etc. that must be set for it to connect? Also is there some kind of connection diagnostic that will specify the location of the error in the machine? I'd like to exhaust any option before shipping this back to the store to be repaired or replaced.

I have an iMac (2008) and my wife has a ACER E500 PC (No WiFi connection), running Windows XP Media Edition. The only internet connection we have is to my iMac, so as both my iMac and my wifes PC both have Ethernet connections , I am trying to share my iMac internet connection to my wifes PC via an Ethernet cable, I am having no luck in getting it working.

May 11, 2010Got my iMac back in the end of February and it's been working flawlessly. About a month ago though, my connection started randomly dropping after periods of moderate internet-use. Say maybe, 20-30mins of browsing. It usually starts working fine after I shut the computer off for a while and try again. I thought maybe it was the ethernet cable, so I got another one, but with the same result. So it got me thinking, maybe it is my ISP. Called Verizon up and they said everything looked good on their end and that my IP was showing up fine. They reset my connection, but with no result. The gentleman on the phone suggested it maybe the computer.
I took my Dell laptop and tried surfing using the built-in Wifi for a while. 2 hours later...working fine. So I tried pluging the ethernet cable to the laptop, worked fine again. So now i'm thinking it HAS to be the computer. So switched the built-in Airport Wifi on the iMac on and tried it out. 2 1/2 hours later...everything works great. WHAT THE HELL!? I'm thinking, since it just suddenly happened, the problem must've been triggered by some sort of update I did(which I don't remember if I did). I searched the Apple Support forums and it turns out, several people have had the same/similar problem with their Macs with no solution.............

Jun 12, 2012I have here a mac mini 4,1 that keeps losing it's Ethernet connection. If the mac is shutdown and restarted there is no connection, however, if the mac is shutdown, all the cables pulled from the back and replaced then restarted it boots and the connection is back. It was reporting a very strange mac address starting with 00 which I've never seen before and I also had difficulty connecting to it via ARD as it would show in the scanner but not connect unless specifically connected via IP address. At first I thought it might be a system upgrade as it happen when we upgraded to 10.6.8 since then I've wiped it and installed 10.6.3 and still no luck.

Sep 20, 2010So I have just moved into a new flat in the centre of Sheffield UK. We are in the process of sorting out the best internet connection possible and it seems to be the pre wired connections that are in the bedrooms which are at 50Mb/sec... great. BUT! We want to share this wirelessly and as the only connection is via this walled socket (See attached photo) I don't know how to do it. It is not a standard BT wall socket but instead is something that an rj45 cable can plug into. Currently I have set up a wireless network by putting an rj45 cable from the wall directly into my mac mini and have set up internet sharing however this means that if I wanted to move or turn off my computer the wireless network would be lost! I have tried already connecting a current wireless router that I have (a Zyxel p-661hw-d1) but there is no dsl connection and therefore no internet. Would I need a wireless bridge? Just so you know the ISP is called Ask4, google it and you get to the homepage.

I was told that it has the "built-in ethernet" and that all I need to do is config it so it will pick up the wireless signal from the router on the main family computer. But whenever I go to config the network connection, and check the status, it tells me that the built-in Ethernet is not plugged in. Do I not have the built in ethernet?
