I have my iMac connected to my wireless router via ethernet, but also airport is on. At the top right I can see I am connected to my network. How can I chose the faster ethernet to connect without turning of airport? How can I be sure the connection is with ethernet and not wireless?
View 7 RepliesI've searched and found a couple solutions to force a Time Capsule to use an ethernet connection for data transfer. Those are 1) turn my Mac's Airport off or 2) turn off the Time Capsule's wireless network.My question is: since those solutions, has anyone found a better alternative to force a Time Capsule to use ethernet that doesn't involve turning off the Mac's Airport or changing its settings each time?My need for this is: I have a first gen Time Capsule, and despite outliving the statistics for a long time, it's finally starting to fail. It's not actually dead yet, though ? the wireless still works, but it's much, much slower than it used to be. The hard drive is fine. I've since switched our primary wireless network over to the Airport Express I was using for Airplay, and I'm having the Time Capsule "join" its new network.

is it possible to run both a wireless connection with airport express, as well as have a direct ethernet connection to the computer? i have a simple, two-way ethernet splitter than comes from the port in the wall that should technically be able to do this, but i have tried this without success and i am guessing there is a little more to this problem than just having both connections hooked up at the same time.
anyways right now i am running on an airport express wireless connection. at my school there is a campus-based p2p program that can only be accessed through direct ethernet connection, leaving me inaccessible to it when i am on my wireless connection. there is a bunch of registration junk that has to be done when i switch from ethernet to wireless, which is why i would prefer to have both set up at once.
I have an Xbox 360 set up in my bedroom which is at the opposite end of the house. I have an airport extreme base station (new model) connected to my modem and PC (PC is not wireless, thus why i have it connected).... I have the wireless adapter connected to my xbox 360. I can play online with no lag (game: modern warfare 2) when nobody is on the pc but when someone is on the pc I get very noticeable lag. I guess I am fighting to split the connection with the pc. What is my best solution? 1) Have my ISP boost the speed of my modem. I didn't know if this would help by giving us more speed to fight over. 2) Get an Airport express and set it up closer to my bedroom/xbox 360. Will the express still fight for the connection with my pc like my wireless adapter on the 360? 3) Get the airport express and connect it directly to my 360 with an ethernet cable. Will i still be fighting for connection with the pc?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a modem (Tilgin Vood 342) that came from the phone company which I use to connect my old desktop PC and my new MacBook Pro to the internet, through two separate ethernet cables. The modem has three ethernet ports and connects to the internet through an ethernet port in the wall. I want to buy an Airport Express in order to get wireless internet to my MacBook, but since my desktop PC can't receive wireless internet, I still need it to be plugged into the modem through a cable (I don't mind that). So my question is, can I use one of the modem ports for the Airport Express and another for the ethernet cable without there being a conflict?
I'm asking because I went to an electronics store and I was told that there might be a conflict and that I should buy an Airport Extreme or another router with ports in order for it to work. I would really prefer the Express because it's and it's the most I can pay for.
I bought an iMac and have been loving it but one thing I can't figure out how to fix is why it can't connect to the internet through my Ethernet cable. My PPC G4 connects just fine. I've googled and found nothing that helps. I tried deleting my system preferences but that didn't help. It just says there is no Ethernet cable connected even though it clearly is. I can't try with wifi because for some reason anything running OS X can't connected to my homes wifi. Not sure if this matters but it's a 27" iMac, 3.03 ghz intel with 1tb hard drive.

A couple of days later while downloading mail in Mac Mail all I get are the circles with the triangle. Safari will not connect. I worked with my ISP yesterday, and they think I have a bad cable(s). Today I connected a known good Ethernet cable from the computer to the DSL modem with the same results of no connection with Safari. I am therefore thinking something is wrong with the built in Ethernet. In an iMac PPC G4 flat screen, is Ethernet on a card or part of a chip? Any idea on the cost to fix the problem? There is an Apple Store close to where I live. Once all the cables are reconnected Wi-Fi does work. This leads me to believe that the problem is in the computer, and not the cables.

This airport extreme sits next to a ps3 and an external network Hard drive (see model below). Basically, I want to be able to dump files from my imac into the other room on this Hardrive, whilst my Ps3 being able to access the Hardrive as usual. Unfrotunately, I can only get the ps3 or the airport extreme to connect to my hardrive through the USB slot. As the HD only has one USB slot, this means I can only use one at a time! Neither of the devices will see the Harddrive when it is plugged in by ethernet alone.. How can i make it so i can use the harddrive with my airport extreme AND my ps3 at the same time?

I have a 24" iMac that has completely all of a sudden stopped wanting to connect to the internet. However, my Macbook, connected to the same ethernet cord or wireless network, works flawlessly and has no trouble. The iMac will find the wireless network...show full bars...then drop a bar....then another bar, then another, until only the smallest bar is available. It will transfer data but only for a few seconds until it wont work at all. Now the macbook, sitting right next to the imac will show full bars and stay that way. So i tried a ethernet cable to the iMac and it will not even pull up 1 single page, but the same cable connected to my Macbook will work flawlessly.

Being that he is 1000 miles away, I am trying to diagnose via phone. System Info: Imac 17", purchased new around 2006- Intel chip, running Tiger OS
Symptoms:
- Cannot connect via ethernet
- When searching system profiler, "Built-in Ethernet" shows up, but no MAC address
- In Network settings, he can see the various connection ports, but cannot check the box on "Built-in Ethernet" to turn the port on... won't let him.
- Wireless is not an option, I don't want to be 24/7 tech support
Diagnosis? I am thinking that the power surge may have fried the ethernet port on the motherboard.
Repair Solution: Planning on picking up the Apple USB Ethernet adapter. I know it doesn't have the correct drivers to run on Tiger, but found a driver online that claims it allows use of the usb adapter on Panther on up.
Questions - Does this sound like a fried ethernet port? Any other easy diagnostic tests I can do? Does the USB adapter sounds like a decent solution?

i can't connect to the internet via my ethernet cable, but this is a weird case. What's weird about it is that all my settings are O.K. (appletalk on and set to ethernet, tcp/ip set to ethernet, dhcp) and my iMac is recieving a 192 address, but it still can't connect to the internet. The dhcp settings are correct, because they are the same settings used on all my other devices (at least those that use internet anyway), and they all connect to the internet just fine. Whether via an ethernet cable, or Wi-Fi.

I have had my iMac for roughly a year and a half. I currently do not use a router, i know i need to change that, especially for security reasons. Anyway, the airport/wireless has always worked but recently for maybe the past month it has failed to connect, i am wandering if there is a way i can check to see what's gone wrong? or any instructions/tips to help me figure this out.
My airport connection to the wireless router has, over the last few days, been becoming increasingly flaky and intermittent followed last night by a total refusal to connect. It had been working fine for at least a year up until recently. The funny thing is that iStumbler finds my router(as well as some neighbours'), and reports a signal strength similar to what I have always had. Problems started as follows: iMac would show full bars, then no bars and then full again, followed by a slow drop to nothing. Turning airport off and back on again, would repeat this process. Occasionally, the iMac would also require the WPA2 password. And progressed to: Over a few days things got worse to the point that I had no usable connection and the airport would not always pick up any networks and would request the WPA2 password repeatedly always followed by a 'Connection timeout'.I would say that the airport extreme card is broken, except iStumbler is reporting 'normal' service. Also, my iPhone reports full signal strength sitting next to the iMac! Can anyone shed some light on this? Typically, Applecare expired all of 2 weeks ago.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSince the latest update of OSX, I'm encountering trouble with my WiFi connection. My old sony laptop has no problem connecting, so I'm guessing the problem must be with the iMac, and not with the network. When I boot the mac, everything is OK, I get connected. But after a while (less then half an hour) it looses connection to internet. In the airport icon appears a " ! ". To get my mac back on the network, I have to reboot it. It's not a signal problem, my mac always finds the network, but it doesn't connect. My password is asked, I'm sure I entered it wright, but it's asked over and over, no connection possible. I tried changing DHCP to a fix IP, deleting the network and reconnect as if it's a new one, and little stuff like that, nothing helps. Only way is to reboot.

I've spent the past few hours attempting to connect my new Windows 8.1 laptop to my iMac's Airport signal without any success. Â I was able to do this very thing using Windows 7 on an old laptop. From what I've been reading, it seems that the ability to connect to networks secured with "WEP-Shared" type security has been removed in Windows 8 because of the fact that it was outdated and insecure. It's great that Microsoft is trying to force individuals to be secure, but unfortunately the iMac's airport utility does not offer any alternatives.

It is on my home network which I have been using for months. I have made no changes to my router or network setting. Other devices will still connect to the wifi with no problem and I connect through the ethernet connection with no problem. I have disabled the wifi and restarted my computer with no luck.
