Software :: Mac Mini Hang During 10.5.7 Update?
May 18, 2009
Not quite sure what to do.Installed 10.5.7 on my iMac and my Air with no issues. Was running the update onto one of my mac minis and it hung in the "Running Installer Script" bit. After an hour I decided to power cycle which it had no issues with. When I check the OS now it says it is on 10.5.7. but I'm not sure how to confirm that the update has been completed correctly.

I updated with the latest Lion patch yesterday and since then Entourage has either hung or taken a very long time to update from our 2003 Exchange server (I have MS Office 2011 but as you're probably aware, there are issues integrating with a 2003 Exchange server). how this might be fixed, short of updating both our 2003 Windows Server to Windows Server 2008 x64 and Exchange to 2010 so I (the only Mac user out of 85 staff) can use Outlook 2011?

Long story, but basically I got an "invalid sibling error" on my intel IMac and was told the best fix was to zero the HD and reinstall. I did this and got Leopard running. Now it hangs while I try to update to 5.10.8. I downloaded the combo update from Apple after it failing through system update.
I'm not sure what the issue could be. I've verified the disk, checked it's smart status is ok and run the hardware test from the install disk.

First the specifics: I have a MacPro, Version 10.6.2 for OSX. I did the latest update that showed for Safari. It went to reboot and just sat there and hung. I waited for 10 minutes, then manually restarted the Mac. It came up, but then when I went to open Mail, I got an error that it couldn't open. I then clicked on ok, and tried to open another app, and it wouldn't open. I tried with several apps with the same result. I downloaded the MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.2.dmg and ran it with no problems, and the Apps will still not open?

I've update to 10.7.4, and ever since my iCal and Mail get the beach cursor - I've waited an hour and longer and then forced quit them, after that they work for a few minutes (Mail longer, iCal until you create or change an item). I realise that Spotlight is reindexing (since this morning, and still saying "estimating indexing time".

I had to force it down during the installation cause in hang up. When I tried a restart the grey screen comes up as usually and the small wheel spins underneath. It spins for hrs. I tried the safe mode but it shows that all is good with the HD. Bootcamp works normally as I am writing from that part right now.

My screen is a HP w2448hc, its capable of 1920x1280, worked at this res before update. Anyone suggest a fix? or did they restrict the mac mini in the update?

http://www.apple.com/macmini/In all the mayhem over the iPhone 4, Apple quietly updated the Mac Mini with a Aluminum case, along with some spec bumps, and some output jacks. The feature that caught my attention is the HDMI out port Apple added. This is the first time an HDMI port, in or out has been on a mac as far as I know. This gives me hope that we just might start to see HDMI ins and outs on some of the upcoming macs.Which brings me to my point, I am patiently waiting for the next iMac update, which I am hoping has an HDMI in. I am a college student and enjoy gaming on my spare time, own an xBox 360, but lack an HDTV. I hope to kill two purchases with one buy, spending my very hard earned cash on a powerful computer (Enough power for Max Settings in the upcoming Diablo 3 and StarCraft 2 PC Games) and an HDTV for my xBox 360.

I'm trying to install boot camp and I can't install until I update the BOOT ROM. I've downloaded the package macmini2011efiupdate.pkg and this corresponds with my 5.2 model identifier. I have already updated lion to 10.7.3 and I seem to think that maybe the boot rom update was intended for 10.7.2 and it won't let me install on 10.7.3 because it thinks it isn't compatible? The message I get when I try to install the Boot ROM update is this software is not supported by your system.

having issues updating thier firmware? Software update shows the 1.6 firmware update needing done, I go throught the process, it reboots and never installs the firmware. System profiler still showing the old version. I tried downloading the file from Apple's website and manually installing and it does the same thing. I'm at my wits end here. It doesn't really bother me except that it constantly shows up in software update.

Has anyone else had issues with playing media via the DVD Player after the latest OS update. When stopping or pausing the audio and video jutters for a couple of seconds afterwards. Have used the delta, combo and full clean reload of 10.7.4 all have the same issue. Reinstalled 10.7.3 and the issue goes away.

Some days ago I went to upgrade my mac mini 2010.I downloaded the combo-updater, as this is my preference. I sometimes have trouble with the normal updater from software update. When running the install I get this message of error above. I tried doing it different ways, downloaded the updater numerous times to try again.I even REINSTALLED OS Lion from the original installer and started over with the same result, even allowing the installer to dl the update, as it asked to do so.So I completely started over with a clean re-partitioned drive and had the same result. I tethered it to my macbook pro 2010 in FIREWIRE TARGET mode and tried installing it that way, same result. I have also just let the Software Updater utility run and allow it to install the downladed update. That activity returns a "cannot expan" error message...End result: It will not for any reason install this update. This is a problem I have never encountered (in 25 years of using macs).

Sound was working fine on mac mini (mid 2010) until I updated to 10.7.4. Now Toshiba TV shows up as an option under sound, but no sound comes out. I tested that my stereo system is not the problem - it still plays sound through hdmi from the blu ray player.I tried resetting PRAM and SMC on the mac mini, neither worked. I followed all the troubleshooting steps prior to resetting the SMC and the problem persisted.

I recently noticed that my DVD drives "hang" when I don't use them for extended periods of time, when I press the open tray button on the keyboard (or use the icon on the menu bar) the drive tries to open (I can hear the tray pull out slightly) but then it doesn't fully extend the tray (bay door on the chassis slightly open).
A reboot will not fix this issue but a complete shutdown of the system and power-up will, it is the same for both of my SATA drives.
Anyone else has experienced this issue in their system?

Apple appears to be distributing a new firmware update that will attempt to address flickering and blank video issues on the latest generation of MiniDisplay Port-equipped Macs connected to external displays using the company's Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter.
The Cupertino-based company is believed to have been working on the update since last fall when early adopters of the new unibody MacBook Pros began experiencing issues when connected to an external display, where the display would sporadically lose signal for a few seconds and flick back on.
Since then, it appears that external display issues have spread to a variety of other new Macs equipped with Mini DisplayPorts, in particular the new Mac mini. There are quite a few threads (1, 2, 3, 4) on the Apple support discussion boards pertaining to similar issues, though not all involve problems when using the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter.
For those users who are connected to an external display via the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter, Apple is quietly distributing an 11.2MB "Mini DisplayPort to VGA Firmware Update" over Software Update that will reportedly update the firmware on the adapter itself.
"This firmware update addresses intermittent flickering and compatibility issues such as no video on some external displays when using the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter on your Mini DisplayPort enabled Mac," the company says in a brief set of release notes. "The Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter firmware update will be downloaded to the Utilities folder and will automatically launch to update the firmware on the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter."
In order to trigger the update, Apple says the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter must be plugged into your Mac and a compatible VGA display. The company also says that the Mac's power adapter must be plugged into a power outlet if the Mac is a notebook.
It should be noted that as of press time, there was no mention of the firmware update on Apple's website and only a couple of users have reportedly seen the update turn up in Software Update, mainly those located overseas. [ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

I've got a Late 2009 Mac Mini running Snow Leopard Server. Occasionally, it takes me awhile to restart after updates, so this could be due to the most recent update or possibly the combination of the last two...
I went into my office, saw that there was a Safari update and decided to let it do its thing. When I came back 30 minutes later, my machine was off. I turned my machine back on, got the gray Apple screen with the spinning cog and the progress indicator for the update. A little over 10% through, the progress indicator reset. No biggie, I figured. Second time it got to the same point, it just shut down. Nada. When I restart, it does the same thing.

So I ran the software update on my Mac Mini, it downloaded 7 items. One was the OS itself, which failed, but said it would retry. The download had a status bar the whole time and did get to the end. Now I think the other updates are being installed, but can't tell. There is no window telling me what it's doing. If I try to restart, it says that the update program stopped the restart. Am I supposed to be seeing progress? As I open the Software Update program, the menu at the top has mostly greyed out items. What do you suggest that this new Mini user does?

The app store on my Mac Mini (2.7GHZ I7 running 10.7.4) tells me I have 3 apps that need to be updated. Whenever I try to update them, I get an error message that reads " We could not complete your request. There was an error in the App Store. Please try again later. (13). I've gone online and saw that some people were fixing the problem by erasing some kind of hidden cookie. It seems to be somwhere in /library/Cookies file but I don't have a file in my library labeled "cookies". I also saw another post where they tried to delete it in terminal, but that had no effect for me.

I have a mac pro running leopard (purchased in 2/08) and it was running beautifully for almost 2 months with no hangs, crashes or freezes. Then, for some reason, today when I turned it on, it would not boot. It would get to the apple logo, then just sit there for a few minutes, then reboot itself and the same thing would happen.
I pulled out the ethernet cable, unplugged all usb except keyboard/mouse and it would then (sometimes) boot into the system, log me in and present me with the UI. I then quickly performed a soft reboot and it would get to the desktop. However, I can only use it for anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes before it would completely lockup. The clock freezes, the mouse freezes and it just sits there forever. I have tried booting into Vista (BootCamp) and it also freezes before startup is complete....................

My primary machine went down today. Came home from work, went to wake it from sleep, it was unresponsive, black screen, power light constant. Checked all connections, tried powering off, waiting, reboot, grey pinwheel on boot from HDD. Tried booting from OS install DVD, same issue.
Removed all extra RAM, HDD's. Left standard ram and standard drive blank in computer, tried to boot from SL install dvd, hangs at same point. You can hear the DVD spin up, the pinwheel spins and then hangs after a while. I have tried a SMC reset. Zapping PRAM etc.

I have a 17" unibody MBP (most current version) with 10.6.4, and I downloaded the recent firmware updates for the MBP's. Before I did this, the mini port to HDMI video/audio output was working perfectly, I could watch anything right off my MBP. After installing the updates, when I plug in the cable, my MBP flickers, goes blue, and then comes back, but the TV does not detect the signal from the laptop. In the Display and Sound menus in System Preferences, there's no option to set up a second display like there was before.
