Mac Pro :: Hang Up After Software Update - Now Apps Not Working
Mar 16, 2010
First the specifics: I have a MacPro, Version 10.6.2 for OSX. I did the latest update that showed for Safari. It went to reboot and just sat there and hung. I waited for 10 minutes, then manually restarted the Mac. It came up, but then when I went to open Mail, I got an error that it couldn't open. I then clicked on ok, and tried to open another app, and it wouldn't open. I tried with several apps with the same result. I downloaded the MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.2.dmg and ran it with no problems, and the Apps will still not open?

Running OS X 10.9.4 and, ever since the last update, I have been encountering several issues with iTunes (hangs up when trying to open, have to force-quit), Safari (pages not loading, long periods with "pinwheel of death"), Youtube Downloader keeps crashing, Apps like iPhoto, App Store, and Mail taking VERY long to open, if at all...

I updated with the latest Lion patch yesterday and since then Entourage has either hung or taken a very long time to update from our 2003 Exchange server (I have MS Office 2011 but as you're probably aware, there are issues integrating with a 2003 Exchange server). how this might be fixed, short of updating both our 2003 Windows Server to Windows Server 2008 x64 and Exchange to 2010 so I (the only Mac user out of 85 staff) can use Outlook 2011?

I've been having some strange occurances on my 2007 MacPro (2,1) where, in certain apps, the Beach Ball of Death will appear and the app will freeze or hang. I can be using the app for some time and perhaps do one thing, and the BBOD appears, the app hangs and the only way out is to Force Quit.It has even happened once or twice with Finder which forces a reboot.The app it tends to hang most in is Toast, especially when I go to burn a DVD. It will start the burn process, then just hang (the optical drive will start to spin up-- as if to start the burn-- then spin down and the BBOD appears. A Force Quit ensues.I can try to burn again and again but no luck, unless I restart the Mac Pro. Then it will work, no problem.But it has also hung using Mail, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and especially Time Machine.I've gone as far as disconnecting Time Machine drive just to see if it is the culprit, as the majority of the initial hangs seemed to be associated with seeing the TM menu "clock" spinning, indicative of TM is doing a backup. Except the backup is taking forever and apps begin to BBOD as it spins.I can check the TM Buddy widget, which just says: "Starting standard backup Backing up to: /Volumes/TM Backups/ Backups. backupdb". Normally there's a lot more information than these couple of lines, especially if TM has been going a while.If I try to stop TM using the TM pulldown menu, the BBOD appears and it hangs, yet the clock icon continues to spin. And if I try to Force Quit, it hangs (and on one or two occasions, the Finder has even showed a BBOD and hung.And while I can move the cursor and click around the Desktop, there is no response.)If I click on an app in the Dock, then the icon freezes in the Dock at its Magnification position and I can do nothing to make it go back. Then I usually just do a reboot and all is well for a while.
I did add two extra Gigs of SDRAM about two weeks ago (from Crucial) and no problem.I did use Tech Tool Pro 5 and tested the Memory, which tested okay. Also, I can check Volume Structures with Tech Tool 5 on the main drive and it says everything is good. (I have two internal spare drives and one external firewire 1.5 TB G-RAID) I've used Disk Utility on the OS drive and checked Verify Disk on the Startup Drive and the others and after awhile, it says the hard drive(s) seem to be okay. I've even ran Apple Jack to see if cleaning things up would help but no dice.The only software I've added (on Monday and the problem started Monday) was a Seagate Diagnostic program to test some external USB Seagate GoFlex archive drives-- these are not always connected or mounted to the Mac Pro. When I started experiencing problems and it crashed or hung several times on Monday-- I trashed the Seagate Diagnostic program.The TM has also been shut down and unplugged as I tended to see more hangs and BBOD when it was in a backup process.The first TM backup of the day goes smoothly.An hour later, when it automatically begins another backup, the TM clock icon spins forever and trouble ensues as noted above)I'm wondering if it is my main Macintosh drive.It is a 250 GB drive, about 70% full and has worked fine until now.

Long story, but basically I got an "invalid sibling error" on my intel IMac and was told the best fix was to zero the HD and reinstall. I did this and got Leopard running. Now it hangs while I try to update to 5.10.8. I downloaded the combo update from Apple after it failing through system update.
I'm not sure what the issue could be. I've verified the disk, checked it's smart status is ok and run the hardware test from the install disk.

Not quite sure what to do.Installed 10.5.7 on my iMac and my Air with no issues.Was running the update onto one of my mac minis and it hung in the "Running Installer Script" bit. After an hour I decided to power cycle which it had no issues with. When I check the OS now it says it is on 10.5.7. but I'm not sure how to confirm that the update has been completed correctly.

I've update to 10.7.4, and ever since my iCal and Mail get the beach cursor - I've waited an hour and longer and then forced quit them, after that they work for a few minutes (Mail longer, iCal until you create or change an item). I realise that Spotlight is reindexing (since this morning, and still saying "estimating indexing time".

I had to force it down during the installation cause in hang up. When I tried a restart the grey screen comes up as usually and the small wheel spins underneath. It spins for hrs. I tried the safe mode but it shows that all is good with the HD. Bootcamp works normally as I am writing from that part right now.

So I have 102 apps that can be updated via itunes. When I go to update them they start downloading like normal. When they finish downloading the app, the update is not applied and still shows as an update available for these apps.This happens even if I try to select just one app. I have already tried logging out of my itunes account and rebooting my system, but it hasn't fixed this problem.

I've had this problem ever since upgrading to Lion quite awhile ago. Each update of Lion promises to fix various bugs, but this one just won't go away. Why is it that applications I've just updated (and which show in Finder as the current version) continue to show as needing updates in App Store. It doesn't matter what I do, delete caches, deleting plists, etc, every time I go to the App Store to check on NEW updates, it continues to show me the ones I've already updated, and it becomes my task to sort through the list looking for those updated since the last time I checked The only way I can tell is by update date. If the date is "today", then I know I haven't got the update.

I'm unable to update the applications I've purchased through the Mac App Store. I've tried numerous workarounds (listed below), but to no avail. I've got a MacBook Pro (early 2011) running Lion 10.7.4. When I initially click either the Update or Update All (I've got multiple apps needing updates), I get error 13 after entering my Apple ID and password. I'm prompted yet again for my password for each app (why?), but then I get error 100, saying that I need to try again later.
Here's what I've tried, which have not worked for me:
* Removing Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore
* Removing Library/Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist
* Clearing cache and cookies from Safari, and restarting Safari
* iTunes workaround by d/l'ing a new app, then getting the T&C form doesn't apply: I don't get that form since I agreed to the latest version before this issue started.
* Removing the file in Library/Cookies/ pertaining to the App Store doesn't exist for me, so wouldn't apply
* Rebooting my machine
* Deleting an app from my machine (only tested with a free app I don't use often), then trying to Install it; this worked back with Lion 10.7.3, but no longer works with 10.7.4.
I saw another workaround which involved creating another user on one's machine, but that seems over the top to have to get Mac App Store updates to work again. Are there any other workarounds where I could update my apps?

Running into the following problem. When I try to update some of my purchased apps, I get an error message stating that I need to sign into the account that I used to purchase the apps. I only have one Apple ID and use it to purchase apps. Now, I cannot perform any updates on these apps. I am worried that if I delete the apps and try to install them again through the Mac App Store, I will not be able to do so as I feel that the mapping between my account and the apps has been lost.
