OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Mac Mini Shuts Down During Startup After Update
Mar 24, 2012
I've got a Late 2009 Mac Mini running Snow Leopard Server. Occasionally, it takes me awhile to restart after updates, so this could be due to the most recent update or possibly the combination of the last two...
I went into my office, saw that there was a Safari update and decided to let it do its thing. When I came back 30 minutes later, my machine was off. I turned my machine back on, got the gray Apple screen with the spinning cog and the progress indicator for the update. A little over 10% through, the progress indicator reset. No biggie, I figured. Second time it got to the same point, it just shut down. Nada. When I restart, it does the same thing.

I am having trouble starting my 21" iMac running Snow Leopard after I had shared the HD with my MB-Pro. I had removed the "everyone - Read Only" rights on the HD (on the iMac) and opened sharing so my MB could attach to it. Grey Apple Logo and progress circle upon startup now.Can changing these rights cause the system to not boot? I can go into single user mode but I am not sure what to do then.

Was having Adobe shockwave/flash problems while running Chrome, which is not completely unheard of. Restarted my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.8), which included a software update (though I'm not sure exactly what programs were updated). Now Chrome will not run at all. Every time I start, it crashes immediately. Have tried SEVERAL times to trash/download it, but the same version seems to keep appearing in my Applications folder. Have also tried trashing the Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome folder to no avail. Appears back in its place after dragging it to the trash. Â
In addition, Adobe flash videos for Safari and Firefox (which I just downloaded as a tester) also will not work. Each attempt to update Adobe Flash also ends in a crash. And now I've discovered the same for everything Microsoft (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). The program shuts down and the Microsoft error message appears breifly, followed by the same crash "Mircrosoft Word Error Reporting Quit Unexpectedly" box. Â Again, have tried several times to download Chrome & Adobe Flash to no avail. All system updates have been made to date. What to do next?

Today I performed a clean install of Snow Leopard on my late 2009 Mac Mini. After completing the installation, I began running software update to bring everything up-to-date.While software update did find and install a number of updates (10.6.8v1.1 Combo update, Security Update 2012-002, Apple Software Installer Update, iLife Support 9.0.4, Remote Desktop Client Update 3.5.3, Airport Utility, Java, Safari) it did not find an update for iTunes (which starts at version 9.x, I believe, in a SL clean install).I assumed that this was some sort of random glitch and manually downloaded and installed iTunes 10.6.3.After that, I re-installed iLife '11 (from a retail DVD, not the App Store). When I ran Software Update again, it found updates for Garage Band, iDVD, and iWeb, but it did not show the updates for iPhoto and iMovie.I found this to be unnerving, as I performed a clean install when I first obtained this Mini a few months ago and didn't experience any of these problems - all of my Apple software updated automatically through Software Update without a hitch.
I began researching this problem online and found that other people have been experiencing this same problem (or some variation of it), and it seems like it began appearing around the time Apple updated some of its security certificates in March. In particular, I've found several references to the missing iPhoto update. This one is especially noticeable because an iPhoto library created in iPhoto 9.2.3 will not open in iPhoto 9.0, and this generates an error upon opening the program (i.e., a user backs up their iPhoto library created in 9.2.3, performs a SL clean install, reinstalls iLife, goes through the Software Update process until it shows that no more updates are available, and are shocked to find that they are unable to open their backed up iPhoto library because they have an out of date version of iPhoto). The most common (and admittedly logical) solution proposed in the threads I've read is to download any necessary updates directly from the Apple website. However, I am curious as to why this previously functional feature now appears to be broken.Has anyone else been struggling with this? Does it indeed have something to do with the new security certificates? Is Apple aware of the problem?

First, my MacPro did not accept my password. Earlier, our building had three power drops in a row, seconds apart. I don't know if this affected my computer accepting my password.Since then, my computer starts to boot up then suddenly shuts down. Is there some way I can boot up and get to admin controls?

Interesting... at the same time as Magic mouse comes into stock (well, in UK Apple stores, anyhow), Apple release the "Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0 for Leopard" & "Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0 for Snow Leopard".
Here are direct links to the installer disk images, to save you time - even if you don't yet have a Magic mouse, you can install the software now to save time later:

I also found it interesting, how the mouse icon has changed into a Magic mouse in System Preferences:

Think this recent update to the white macbook is a good sign that the mini will be updated soon? Or holds no significance?

One morning my Mac Mini would not startup, it would try to start up but after about 2 minutes the Apple would turn to the circle with a diagonal line through it. Fortunately I had installed Snow Leopard on my external Firewire 800 drive so I could startup from that drive. My internal drive now will not mount when starting from my external drive until I rebuild the drive using Drive Genesis and then run Volume Structures with Tech Tool V5.0. No other combination of utilities seems to work to make it mount. Not sure if that would makes sense to anyone that might know what is wrong and how to fix it so I could startup from my internal drive.Â
I have also tried to reinstall Snow Leopard but when starting from the install DVD the internal drive does not show up as an option for installation. I am trying to startup at least one last time from my internal drive since I have a Filemaker Pro 7 database which I have forgotten the password for but when starting up from my internal drive it opens since the password is stored in Snow Leopard. I have found programs using Windows to change or extract the FM7 password but I am trying not to spend the $30 to $40 for a program I will only use once.Â

I see a lot of people suggesting that perhaps because the poster had less than 10gb (which is my case as well-- I have around 8), that this is why this message is happening. Well, my response to that is:
1)I have had around 8gb free for months, and these messages only started appearing in the last week. Each time I go "???" and look at my finder to see 8.4gb free or whatever, and I am like "WHY ARE YOU TELLING ME I AM OUT OF SPACE?
2)in the terminal, I was trying to download a few 20-30mb files, and wget quit out on me saying "insufficient storage space left on device".and doing "df -h" shows me that I have almost 10% free.. and again this is a 20-30mb, so this is total nonsense.
Are there any suggestions as to what might be causing this and a course of action, other than being told: "copy your files to an external hard drive and delete them on your startup disk".

All of a sudden I was restarting my Air and now, it just has the spinning wheel for a few seconds and then goes blank and shuts down. I have tried everything the 'guide trouble shoots' but nothing has worked. Even was able to test the hard drive and it came back with no trouble. I tried to 'return to factory setting' but no luck and also tried resetting the Parameter RAM.

The problem is, each time I restart my computer or put it back on again, it takes around 20 mins to start up. At the grey screen there is a grey bar that takes 20 mins to load.
Should I reinstall snow leopard?

I am running Snow Leopard on a new Power Mac which is part of a windows network. On the Windows server, there are a couple of shares that I would like the mac to use. I can manually connect to them and browse ok, but what I would really like to do is have them automatically load on startup and display on the desktop. I have tried connecting to the them and then dragging them into the login items, but on restart, they don't appear on the desktop.

I've had my Macbook for a couple years. I'm not someone who downloads a ton of stuff, but I suspect that my sluggish performance is due to the many startup items I have.Using iBoost, I've identified many, and know where they are, but I don't know which ones are necessary. [code]

My dock won't reappear. I've gone to Terminal and typed killall Dock, and it says there is no process called that. So after literally two days of troubleshooting, I found the Dock.app file, and when I click it, the dock opens, my wallpaper (which was permanently blue) comes back, everything is fine. Until I quit. Then the Dock is missing again. So the Dock obviously isn't launching upon startup or login.
