Sep 9, 2014

Running OS X 10.9.4 and, ever since the last update, I have been encountering several issues with iTunes (hangs up when trying to open, have to force-quit), Safari (pages not loading, long periods with "pinwheel of death"), Youtube Downloader keeps crashing, Apps like iPhoto, App Store, and Mail taking VERY long to open, if at all...

Mac Pro :: Hang Up After Software Update - Now Apps Not Working

Mar 16, 2010

First the specifics: I have a MacPro, Version 10.6.2 for OSX. I did the latest update that showed for Safari. It went to reboot and just sat there and hung. I waited for 10 minutes, then manually restarted the Mac. It came up, but then when I went to open Mail, I got an error that it couldn't open. I then clicked on ok, and tried to open another app, and it wouldn't open. I tried with several apps with the same result. I downloaded the MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.2.dmg and ran it with no problems, and the Apps will still not open?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: 10.7.3 Update Causes MS Entourage To Hang/Take A Very Long Time To Update

Feb 8, 2012

I updated with the latest Lion patch yesterday and since then Entourage has either hung or taken a very long time to update from our 2003 Exchange server (I have MS Office 2011 but as you're probably aware, there are issues integrating with a 2003 Exchange server). how this might be fixed, short of updating both our 2003 Windows Server to Windows Server 2008 x64 and Exchange to 2010 so I (the only Mac user out of 85 staff) can use Outlook 2011?

OS X Mavericks :: Can't Login To Update Software / Apps

Sep 9, 2014

OS X - 10.9.4...The issues:

- I can't login to update software/apps. the user /Apple ID part is grayed out as a person. I can't log in properly. It only offers up the password section. I can log into my apple id without problem, but it won't let me change the user name for updates.

- I use Chrome and it used to default to Google for search. Now it defaults to yahoo! even though in my preferences I have google set as default.

- I've gone through and deleted start-up software that started showing up (DropBox on launch, ipseacurity something)

- my background swapped out to a default today without me adjusting it.

- I used to be able to type directly into the chrome bar. now a chrome extension shows up instead and I have to select all and delete to enter text

- everything is running really slowly.

Further background - I'm currently serving in the Peace Corps and have been using a VPN network and modem through Orange to secure my wifi connection. I've tried to be careful but perhaps not careful enough. I have gone through all my extensions and settings and dumped everything I didn't recognize but am not sure what other precautions to take/how to fix things.

Mac Pro :: In Certain Apps Beach Ball Of Death Will Appear / App Will Freeze Or Hang

Feb 16, 2012

I've been having some strange occurances on my 2007 MacPro (2,1) where, in certain apps, the Beach Ball of Death will appear and the app will freeze or hang. I can be using the app for some time and perhaps do one thing, and the BBOD appears, the app hangs and the only way out is to Force Quit.It has even happened once or twice with Finder which forces a reboot. The app it tends to hang most in is Toast, especially when I go to burn a DVD. It will start the burn process, then just hang (the optical drive will start to spin up-- as if to start the burn-- then spin down and the BBOD appears. A Force Quit ensues.I can try to burn again and again but no luck, unless I restart the Mac Pro. Then it will work, no problem. But it has also hung using Mail, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and especially Time Machine.I've gone as far as disconnecting Time Machine drive just to see if it is the culprit, as the majority of the initial hangs seemed to be associated with seeing the TM menu "clock" spinning, indicative of TM is doing a backup. Except the backup is taking forever and apps begin to BBOD as it spins.I can check the TM Buddy widget, which just says: "Starting standard backup Backing up to: /Volumes/TM Backups/ Backups. backupdb". Normally there's a lot more information than these couple of lines, especially if TM has been going a while. If I try to stop TM using the TM pulldown menu, the BBOD appears and it hangs, yet the clock icon continues to spin. And if I try to Force Quit, it hangs (and on one or two occasions, the Finder has even showed a BBOD and hung. And while I can move the cursor and click around the Desktop, there is no response.)If I click on an app in the Dock, then the icon freezes in the Dock at its Magnification position and I can do nothing to make it go back. Then I usually just do a reboot and all is well for a while.

I did add two extra Gigs of SDRAM about two weeks ago (from Crucial) and no problem.I did use Tech Tool Pro 5 and tested the Memory, which tested okay. Also, I can check Volume Structures with Tech Tool 5 on the main drive and it says everything is good. (I have two internal spare drives and one external firewire 1.5 TB G-RAID) I've used Disk Utility on the OS drive and checked Verify Disk on the Startup Drive and the others and after awhile, it says the hard drive(s) seem to be okay. I've even ran Apple Jack to see if cleaning things up would help but no dice. The only software I've added (on Monday and the problem started Monday) was a Seagate Diagnostic program to test some external USB Seagate GoFlex archive drives-- these are not always connected or mounted to the Mac Pro. When I started experiencing problems and it crashed or hung several times on Monday-- I trashed the Seagate Diagnostic program. The TM has also been shut down and unplugged as I tended to see more hangs and BBOD when it was in a backup process. The first TM backup of the day goes smoothly. An hour later, when it automatically begins another backup, the TM clock icon spins forever and trouble ensues as noted above)I'm wondering if it is my main Macintosh drive. It is a 250 GB drive, about 70% full and has worked fine until now.

OS X Mavericks :: Why Do So Many Apps Require Administrative Rights To Install / Update

Sep 10, 2014

I know that my Mac is technically a multi-user system, but it offends me mightily to have to give administrative rights to programs from Microsoft, Adobe, Oracle, etc when they should clearly be able to function in a single-user install available only to my userid.

I can see where firewall software and maybe stuff like vmware needs it but there doesn't seem to be a compelling reason for letting nearly every software company on the planet have super user access to my filesystem. Once I give them such rights its trivial for them to set up a set-uid permission as root on some little executable tucked away in their install.

Any way to force software to just install in your own userspace? Is there some type of jail/chroot I could set up to protect my system from these programs?

OS X :: IMac Hang On 5.10.8 Combo Update?

May 24, 2010

Long story, but basically I got an "invalid sibling error" on my intel IMac and was told the best fix was to zero the HD and reinstall. I did this and got Leopard running. Now it hangs while I try to update to 5.10.8. I downloaded the combo update from Apple after it failing through system update.

I'm not sure what the issue could be. I've verified the disk, checked it's smart status is ok and run the hardware test from the install disk.

OS X :: System Apps Keep Freezing And Other Weird Stuff?

Jan 25, 2009

I've been experiencing some weird problems on my Mac Pro for the last few days. It's a Xeon quad 2.8, 6GB memory and running 10.5.6, never had any problems with it before. So the problems I'm having is that some system applications becomes unresponsive (freeze and fun beach ball spinning). In most cases I'm not able to force quit the frozen apps either. Also, in the dock it says "Application Not Responding" when I right click on them (like it should), but when I check the "Force Quit Applications" window there is no such text (there should be some red text after the application name if I'm not mistaken).

These are the apps that has frozen the last few days: System preferences, Disk Utility, System Profiler, Software Update, the main menu has also frozen at times.

When I try to shut down the Mac Pro it quits all the applications as usual, but then just stops and shows the wallpaper and nothing else (so I have to use the power button on Mac Pro itself to completely shut it down. When I want to put my Mac to sleep it takes way longer than usual as well. Today after I had been away for a while I came back to see the screen saver active, but in my Energy settings I've set it to shut down the displays before the screen saver would activate so I have no idea why the screen saver was on...

I have locked my System Preferences (with the little lock in the lower left) but when I click on the lock it just says "Authorizing..." next to it and System Preferences freezes (no password window pops up).

I'm lost. I can't for the life of me figure out what could be wrong. I've used Repaired Permissions without any luck. (There was some error messages, but now I can't even open up Disk Utility again without it freezing directly at start up.)

All I can think about is that something I've installed would have messed something up, not sure. The last days I've installed: Grammarian Pro X (trial), iWork '09 (retail) and Handbreak. (and I've updated other software like Adium, but I doubt that's the problem)

OS X Mavericks :: MacBook Pro Freezing While Browsing Internet?

Jun 30, 2014

Almost daily, I will be in the middle of browsing the internet and pages will just stop loading. Following this, any already-opened application I click on will freeze, including Finder. If I try to open any new applications, the icon will bounce over and over in the Dock but never open. If I close my web browser and try to reopen it, it tells me that there is already a copy of the browser running and I cannot open another one. The only way to remedy this I have found is to hold down the power button and shut off the computer. Once I turn the computer back on, everything runs normally. I originally though it may have been my web browser (Google Chrome) so I recently switched to Firefox, and the problem still persists. It is extremely annoying.
