trying to install Tiger on a 350mhz Sawtooth - problem is the computer won't read the dvd/cdrw drive (it did fine before I formatted the HD). I try holding C, it does nothing, tried reseting PRAM, nothing.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got GSA-H20L LG lightscribe drive but the only problem is that the lightscribe drivers I got from versiontracker have to no avail helped me, I also tried disclabel.
Is there anyway via drivers/program to get lightscribe to work on this sawtooth?
Today I was planning to build in a second harddrive into my old G4 tower. So I did this. But after installing the system won't boot anymore from the OS X Tiger partition. I have tried all sorts of jumper settings, from slave to master to cable select. All without success.
When I boot from the Tiger installation CD diskutility does not even recognize my original master drive nor does it recognize the new slave drive. I even tried to boot from an old OS9 disk to initialize the disk. I tried formatting it in another machine to HFS Journaled, no success in booting mounting the disk whatsoever.
I recently added some extra RAM's but i doubt these are the problem since my machine DOES boot without having the new disk installed in the system.
It is a 60GB Maxtor drive, so it is within the maximum amount of GB's possible for these older machines.

I have a powermac G4 Sawtooth and the power supply recently decided to go, My question is, is there a way to tell if I have a Rev.1 or Rev.2 just by looking at the board? Markings on the case and PSU don't help because I bought a Replacement Motherboard for it which had wider white plastic clips, I need to know because I am not sure if i need the 237W PSU or the 200W PSU.

As far as I know, these are the right specs for my machine:

I've been a PC user for many many years, but have had a G4 Sawtooth for about 3 years now, its only a 400Mhz model, but I have just placed a 533Mhz G4 in there, and apparently I need to use a dip switch? I just got a standard sized dip switch, so thats not a problem, I was wondering two things:
1. If anyone has a Sonnet for sale instead of using the G4
or
2. If you can offer up some advice on the easiest way for my G4 to recognise the new 533 CPU?
Well, using some guides (check bottom of post), I did some experimenting with my old G4 Sawtooth to see how fast I could run its lame 400mhz cpu. Ultimately, my goal was to make Quake 3 playable at a resolution other then 800x600. These tests were all done with PC-133 ram (896MB), running 10.4.11.
Starting specs:
400mhz (4x100mhz)
Xbench cpu score: 19.9
1st overclock (with 400mhz cpu):
500mhz (5x100mhz)
Xbench cpu score: 29.3
Note: This was incredibly unstable.
In the process of moving to 450mhz on the 400mhz stock cpu, one of the jumper resistor solder pads came off (lame 10 year old glue). So, I went on ebay and got 5 450mhz G4 cpus for 50$ CDN after shipping. One of them came dead, and one failed after the jumper change.
2nd overclock (with 450mhz cpu):
500mhz (5x100mhz)
Xbench cpu score: 22.3
Note: This sucked. Now really stable, but I didn't get a performance gain like I got with the 400mhz cpu, and Quake 3 still ran like crap.
So here I decided to do the FSB overclock. Knowing I would end up with 4.5 x 133 which would be too fast, i jumpered a cpu to 3.5 multiplier for a 466 clock. This never booted. I put in a 450mhz chip and...
3rd overclock (with 450mhz cpu):
533mhz (4.5x133mhz)
Xbench cpu score: 25.6
Note: That multiply doesn't make sense. It shouldn't be 533. But hey, it worked, stable, and I got a performance gain.
4th overclock (with 450mhz cpu):
533mhz (5x133mhz)
Xbench cpu score: 29.3
Note: Ok, the clock is still not right. This is the same cpu that did the 5x100 so I know the multiplier is set right. But hey, its doing better in the scores!
Conclusion: Success! 533mhz seems to be the top out with the NVRAMRC script in place. But there is a considerable performance gain everywhere (booting, app loading, etc). Most importantly, my Quake 3 now runs very smooth @ 1280x1024 with max graphics settings. I am a very happy camper. I can take pictures of the solder job if anyone requests them. I do recommend this if you have some good technician skills.
i recently bought a secondhand mac g4/400 and ive been trying to startup to install tiger (am using a macbook pro for work). i tried both of the ultra ata 'bays' but am wondering whether normal IDE drives will work?
i have:
1X western digital (caviar) enhanced IDE drive and
1X seagate normal IDE drive (ST340015A)
the cd-rom works fine on its own and can boot up with panther install discs but when selecting startup disc there is nothing. I connected the cdrom to the far end of the cable (set jumper to master) and WD E-IDE drive to the second 'block' (set as slave)
i am under the assumption that because the cdrom works there is nothing wrong with the cables.
on boot up I cant select the startup drive (just network) as there is only one device detected (CDROM) if harddrives are disconnected
I get the network folder first on boot up then question mark/folder icon
not quite sure how to proceed from here. is formatting a must for the normal IDE drive? or will the mac pick it up regardless.
I connected both drives to existing cables and the normal IDE drive also to IDE (PC) cable also reset the PMU/SMU as well as took out all daughterboards and tested RAM which appears to be ok. i also took out the battery and put it back.
the PSU seems fine, but is there a way i can check with diagnostics or something..
I running a 400MHz sawtooth Family #M5183 my friend gave me with a 40 gig hard drive running OSX 10.3.9. I just picked up at the swap meet a Qwicksilver Model No.M849 PNG4 1GHZ DP/2M CACHE/512MB SDRAM? 80GB HD DVD-R/CDRW/Nv17 DUAL/56k MDM/GIGE it is missing the HD from under the superdrive can I just plug in the HD from my Sawtooth and run her? She still has the HD in the bottom its a 80 gig IBM Deskstar. When I opened my Sawtooth I found that there is a Seagate Cheetah model#*ST118202LW* Its not even plugged in!!! How many gigs is it and can i run it for more space? I have three 512 cards for memory. Can I use the video card from the sawtooth to run a second monitor? If this all works whats the newest operating system I can run? As soon as I get the money I am going to swap the processor and bring her up to speed. I am a singer/songwriter on a budget trying to put my studio together,I run live sound and make Hand Drums.I'm not a computer tech by no means but I do ok running a mouse to get a good sound. If you are going to tell me to wrap machine in tin foil and put it in the freezer PLEASE don't waste my time!!!!! I just want to build my machine correctly and not f@#$ anything up.

I read that lucent Wavelan silver, bronze, gold cards are backwards compatible with the original Airport specs.
Does anyone know if this works for certain? If it does, I'd like to pick one up cheap from ebay and stick it in my Sawtooth.
After packing away my little brothers sawtooth 400Mhz with 384mb RAM and an 8Mb ATI AGP graphics card and then unpacking it I've been having a problem. When starting the computer up the screen shows nothing at all I have tested to see if the screen is broken and it seems to be functional. I think the card itself might be broken? BTW, I'm using the VGA slot and not the DVI slot on the back. I have also removed and cleaned the card just incase that might've been the problem.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an iMac G3 DV Special edition which I bought off of craigslist with 400MHz, 384MB of Ram and a 13GB hard drive. It came with Mac OS X 10.1.5 and I'd like to upgrade it to Tiger. I have the install DVD and when I insert the disc, the iMac sees it and asks me to restart the machine so it can install but when I click ok and it restarts, nothing happens. It just boots back into Mac OS X. I've tried holding down the C key and setting it to boot the disk in the System Preferences area but nothing.

I hear the CD tray run, but then it stops and displays the flashing question mark. Ive tried booting in open firmware, resetting pram and nvram but it still wont boot.

View 2 Replies View Relatedso I have a very unique, bizarre problem. A friend brought her G4 1.67gHz 15" Powerbook to the office to have it looked at as it wasn't working properly. I took a look at it and found that one of the RAM chips was shorted out. I took it out and ordered her a new pair (since it was like $26 for 2gb, and with the one removed she was running on 512). Here's where it gets bizarre: I installed the new RAM and it was freezing regularly. I then took one out and it was still freezing regularly. I booted it from my Utilities partition (I have a bootable firewire drive set up to fix problems and recover data) and ran Disk Warrior, TechTool, and a whole heapin helpin of other fixin and optimization apps. I got it to fix all the reported errors, TechTool reports no hardware errors, everything should work perfectly. So now, the laptop boots to a blue screen. I can't boot it from a retail Tiger install disc, and I can't boot it from the hard drive, it just boots to the Apple logo, the Unix spinner, and then goes blue and freezes. So I set it as a firewire target drive and was able to do an archive/install of Tiger using my G5. It recognized and installed fine and it booted my G5. Ok, so it's not the drive. I restart and nothing, apple/unix logos then blue screen. Same with the Tiger DVD. I replace the original 512MB stick (the working one) and still same result. So finally I go back to my Firewire repairs disc and everything boots fine, all tests come out fine, drive is recognized and works fine, etc. What could cause a computer to boot, a drive to be bootable, but a computer not being able to boot on any installed drive?

When I press any key on the keyboard, nothing happens. I know this copy works because I've tried this on VMWare 3. (I'm going to Boot Camp of BIOSHOCK!)
What I've Tried:
Deleted partition, recreate partition and choose the Windows 7 disk as startup disk.
Well I installed Vista Ultimate using boot camp on my 27 inch iMac using 10.6.2 and now I can't get it to boot in OSX. I tried holding the command key when rebooting but it just goes into the windows part. Looks like windows took over. Does anybody know how I can get it to boot in Leopard?

I tried putting the disc in and clicking the restart button on the screen that says "Welcome to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger", but when I click it it just restarts my computer and does nothing. I then tried the alternate install it did the same thing it did nothing but restarted my eMac. I then tried restarting my computer while holding c key nothing once again. Then I tried holding down apple, option, f , and o keys and then typed in cd boot and also tried cdrom boot nether of them worked so i restarted and tried dvd boot/dvdrom boot nothing worked on all the occasion i got a grey screen with a circle with a line through it. What do I need to do to get these install discs to work?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an iBook G4 1.07 GHz 30 gb 256 RAM with Panther. It was working fine until my HD got close to being full. Now I can't get it to boot past the Apple screen. It will either freeze there, or move on to the blue screen and freeze before the progress bar enters. I want to re-install Panther but I can't get any CD to boot during startup by holding "C", including the Panther OS CD, the Hardware Test CD, or the Tech Tool CD. I am able to boot to single user mode, where I type fsck -fy, and I recieve no errors with the hardware. I had this issue beore and my HD had to be replaced by Apple.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my old Airport Extreme Base Station (looks like a lumpy cap) to a newer AirPort Extreme Base Station with dual-band support and 802.11n. I installed the software on my Macbook running Snow Leopard, created a new set up with new passwords, etc. The Macbook and a G4 12" rev A PowerBook running OS 10.3.9 connect fine, but a G4 500 GHz Sawtooth, running OS 10.3.9, with an original Airport card installed will not connect. Initially the new networks showed in the AirPort inverted triangle bars, but now the triangle is grey, and I can't get any connection with Internet Connect or the network diagnostic that comes with the OS. 2 out of three ain't bad, but I want all the computers to connect.

I installed leopard on it while back but it originally came with tiger. lost the recovery cds. I want it back to tiger. When i put the original tiger dvd in it will say in cannot install the software. so i figured i use TDM to connect it to my imac(running leopard) I used disk utility to erase the HD and did repair disk afterwords. I tried to boot the dvd using the c button on the MB but i would respond and went to the question mark folder.
How can i get tiger back on my MB
please don't ask me why i want tiger back and what leopard off its not really relevant.
Got a Powerbook G4 with a "messed up" HD. Couldn't fix it, so got a firewire drive and ran a bunch of utilities from my newer intel iMac. Cloned the Powerbook's drive to a USB hard drive, did all repairs on the USB drive, formatted the Powerbook, cloned the USB drive BACK to the Powerbook, but it just gives me the flashing question mark when I try to boot.
What is REALLY weird is I can boot my iMac FROM THE CLONE ON THE USB DRIVE and it works fine.In Drive Genius the Powerbook drive (in TDM) shows as a single drive, but if I go to "Repartition" then it shows 3 smaller partitions on the drive; I believe they're called "Apple Free Space" or something like that (can't check right now, I'm running Repair on it AGAIN at the moment).
I feel like I'm missing something simple, like the machine just doesn't see one thing that tells it "Oh, yeah! There's an operating system on this drive!" I have tried partitioning from Drive Genius and Disk Utility. Have done clones back and forth with Drive Genius, Disk Utility, and Carbon Copy Cloner. Same results each time.
I just replaced the HD in an iBook G3 I have laying around with a toshiba 40gb. The install went fine and I formatted it in disk utility using mac os x extended (journaled). I ran it for errors and it checked out fine. I also ran the apple hardware test CD and everything checked out there too. The problem is I am getting a kernal panic no matter what I do. I started off installing 10.3 and the first disc installs fine, but then when it restarts it gets an instant kernal panic. I tried 10.4 with the same results. Then I tried the 10.2 discs that the iBook came with and it would get the very last step of the install on the 1st disc and would not go any farther. It said "one minute remaining" for over an hour.
I have taken a picture of the error log that shows up and you can see here: The top line got cut off but it says "panic(cpu 0): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook4,3" Like I said, everything checks out hardware wise and i have tried three different versions of OS X.
Anyone knows if the install cds shipped with the macbook pro C2D are able to install OSX on a PPC mac. Macbook pro install CD to install tiger on a G4 Powerbook?
I have an '08 Octo 2.8.
I created a Boot Camp Partition (an entire drive, actually) and installed XP. The install went off without a hitch ... Except, having rebooted to Mac OS X (10.6.1) there is no way to boot Windows again. Going to Preferences->Boot Disk shows no Book Camp bootable drive.
This may be a dumb question. I know that you press the "c" key on a MacBook to boot from DVD. But what about a Mac Mini with wireless keyboard? Does the Mini see the keyboard when there is a NEW drive inside?
View 5 Replies View Relatedother day my Mac Pro froze while just browsing the internet. I had to do a hard restart and the computer will not boot at all now. It hangs up at the Gray Loading screen. It looks like it is loading, and then the spinning circle just freezes and the system never moves from that spot.I've even tried booting to an install disc to run disk utility and such, but it won't even boot to that. It does the same thing and hangs on the gray screen. I feel pretty powerless here not being able to even boot to a DVD/CD. The only other thing that I've noticed is ocassionaly the lower 1/5 of the screen will blip with a horizontal orange bar.
