Am I going crazy or did the google search field change? If say, I do a search in google, in the search result pages, the google search field looks like this: Notice the huge font in the search bar and the weird search button.
View 20 Replies View RelatedI have not seen anyone address the following problem. Nevertheless, it absolutely annoys me, and I wonder if anyone knows how to fix it. Sometimes, when I press the normal COMMAND+SHIFT key sequence to use Spotlight, the Spotlight search field will drop down lower on the screen. It will still be on the correct side, but it will drop down near the middle of the screen. In other words, the Spotlight search field will not be attached to the menu bar in the upper-right corner (next to the clock and the day of the week) where it normally appears. However, during those instances, it will pop back into place if I do one of two things: 1) start typing into the Spotlight field anyway or 2) Change my resolution to 1680x1050. This really annoys me when it happens. Does anyone know how to fix this so that it never happens again? It doesn't happen a lot, but I don't want it to happen again, and I absolutely love using Spotlight. I'm a Spotlight addict. Also, if there's a fix, can someone tell me anything I can do to Snow Leopard, so that the Spotlight search field never pops out of place again?
Sorry, but I'm very much a perfectionist.
Here's a screen shot of how it looks when it happens. I snapped it off the desktop when it happened last time:[URL]

View 1 Replies View RelatedI can hear the drives start spinning when I start to do a search, but they don't do it well enough, because generally the finder hangs and often I have to crash out and restart. The problem doesn't occur with the drive I use for time machine, so I can leave that hooked up, but often I have other drives attached so I can access material on them. Trouble is, they seem to spin down when I'm not using them and then they cause trouble whenever I do a search. L. P.S. I'm on a 2009 imac running 10.7.4. I have 4 gigs of RAM.
View 5 Replies View RelatedVery often I need to search a single track in an album and then I start my browsing just from that point, using the arrow keys. i.e. I did like this: select the search filed, type the keywords, select the track, empty the search field, press twice the tab key (one to activate the left column, the second one to activate the tracklist), in order to activate the selection I made and, eventually, use the arrow keys to browse the collection. Since some time ago, once that I've done my search, when I press the tab key, it activate the left column and then the tracklist, but it do not unselect the search field and so, if I use the arrow keys, the menu of the search field appears and there's no way to leave unselected the field.

I just installed Lion on a machine that I use daily. One of the routine things I do is connect to FTP servers and search their contents to then collect files and process them. I was unpleasantly surprised when I found that I was simply unable to search the FTP server, it simply doesn't bring back any results.Â
I tried on 2 other Lion Macs and both have the same symtoms, one of the other 2 macs is brand new out of the box (3 days old)Â I had to downgrade to Snow Leopard to return the machine to a useable state.Â
Is Apple aware of this issue, is there a workaround? I prefer to not install 3rd party FTP apps. In fact, I tried Transmit and it too would not search but I assure you that the host of FTP servers I login in to are just fine as any other PC or Mac (10.6 or inferior) work without any problem.Â
Has Apple changed something? PS the mac I tried it on was even cleanly installed, nothing but Apple SW and fully up-to-date.Â
I have recently installed Mac os X Lion on my work iMacs, and ever since I haven't been able to search on my windows server. I was running both leopard and snow leopard before, and back then it worked perfectly.

Is there a way to include library items in a finder search?
View 1 Replies View RelatedFor some reason in the default view (icon) in Finder I can't select multiple files when I click one, hold down the shift key and click a file farther down in the list. In Windows this would select all the files between the first and the second including both. In OSX 10.7.3 it only selects the first file and the second file as if I held down the Command key.
One of my friends who uses 10.6.x says it works as expected on his machine --- any idea what my issue might be? It's not because of the recent update since it did the same thing in 10.7.2 (not sure if it did it on the default 10.7.0 install my iMac came with as I updated before I used it for the first time).

I am new to the mac (OS10.7.4) having recently transitioned from Windows (and go way back to CPM - for those that remember). I am trying to achieve through finder what I can do in windows explorer by selecting multiple files, selecting properties and then selecting (and then modifying) details. I tried the similar thing on Finder using Get Info instead of Properties but only ended up with multiple windows, one for each file selected (and had to close each one individually! ).
Tried 'option-command-I' on multiple selected files, it worked, but the common tags that I wanted to alter where not available for editing. I can simply achieve the outcome I want by cutting and pasting the files to a usb stick, making the modifications on the windows machine and pasting them back on the mac. This should be a simple basic operating system function regardless of platform - how to find/achieve it!

If you have a contact in Addressbook (AB) with a nickname, if you also use Apple Mail (AM) and create a new email and start to type the contact's email in the TO field, AM will finish your typing giving you a list of related possible email addresses to choose from. The problem is that in addition to the email addressk AM adds the contact's nickname as opposed to it's firstname/lastname or even business name. We need a preference for this, per contact.Â
Example:Â In AB you have a contact:Â
Name: Jon Doe
Company Doe Company
Nickname: The Doester
email: jon.doe@doecompany.comÂ
In AM you start to write an email:Â and type: "jon" and AM shows you a list of possible related emails one of which will be:Â "The Doester" [URL]Commentary: now if a casual email to a friend, this is OK. But what if this is a business oriented email and "The Doester" isn't appropriate? You can only stop the inclusion of "The Doester" by deleting it from the Nickname field in the AB. This is presumptuous on Apple's part, or a bug, that the Nickname should trump the first/lastname or company name.Â
I don't exactly know the answser to this. If we could easily choose which name to append in front of the email address (firstname/lastname, company name or nickname) that would be cool. Or maybe no name gets added if it has to be: all or nothing from a programming point of view. But having nickname as the primary, if it exists, can be a problem in certain correspondence IMHO.Â

I am trying to insert multiple pictures at once into a word document, on office for mac 2011. I am using the 'insert picture' option from the toolbar. Shift-click doesn't work like on a PC, and I have tried a variety of button combinations that don't seem to have any effect! Is there any way around this so I don't have to insert picture files into a word document one at a time?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had recently attempted to uninstall Native Instruments FM8, and in an effort to do so, ran searches through my system Library folder and my user Library folder to find anything related to the software and remove them. Found around 100 preset sound files related to FM8, sent them to the trash and emptied the trash (not securely). Then after removing every file as listed on NI's website, restarting my computer, and running another Finder search in my Library folder, the sound files I had deleted earlier appear in the Finder search! However, right-clicking the files and selecting Get Info shows no directory for the file, and the files are unable to be deleted or have permissions modified.Â
I have already used the Disk Utility to repair disk permissions, but these phantom files still remain in my Finder search !Â

Why doesn't safari history save google searches in OS 10.6.8 or Lion? It records image searches but not the google search unless you use the google search on the bar and not in the window.

I received my MBP last week. everything was great, no problem at all. but since few days ago, I can't type anything to the search panel at Finder! sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt!
i was wondering what can be the reason. it is so annoying problem, i transfered all my files, and i need to search to organize them
here is the place marked with RED where exactly I mean. but this problem is not only for Search Finder panel, it happens at any Finder panel.
The original problem was whenever I opened a new Finder window and began to type in the search bar, as soon as I got three letters in, the whole thing would crash on me. After some unsuccessful fix attempts, now Finder no longer opens from the dock icon its supposed to. When I click on the icon, a new one with the default App icon opens at the end of the dock, and it works from there. The search problem also only appears when opening a finder window directly from the dock. If Finder opens to, say, allow me to choose a file to upload to a website, search doesn't crash on me. Spotlight still works correctly.
I tried to delete/reset the prefrences, but when I go to the folder, the preference list for Finder isn't there. I tried removing all the preferences and restartting just in hopes it would help, but it didn't solve anything. I've also repaired disk permissions using the disk utility, but that seems to have created the new problem.

Anyone know of a way to make the "Name" field on the login screen in Lion longer? My students login with their active directory account/email address, and almost all of them are too long for them to be able to see the whole thing when typing it into the username field.

I am posting this in the Mac Pro forum because I am not seeing this issue on my my Macbook Pro, and therefore think it may be machine-specific. Since upgrading my Mac OS to Lion, the first keystroke is often rejected by the password field on the login screen. The field accepts the keystroke initially, but then "refreshes" and blanks out. This causes a lot of login errors, and I have to retype my password. It only happens when first logging in, never on the second entry of my password. Also, it happens equally often whether logging in on a cold boot, or when logging back in after logging out. Additionally, it doesn't happen every single time, although it happens a lot. My Lion system is an upgrade/install, and I often wonder if a clean install would fix this.

Using the Finder in 10.5.8, pressing Cmd-F to get to the Search window. I want to look for jpeg files created during December of 2008. I first specify file type = image, press the + to add another constraint, choose "creation date before" . . . today's date comes up by default, with little up/down arrows at the right to allow changes. Well, the arrows do nothing, and I can't edit the date string directly. The only change I'm able to make is when holding down the Alt key, which allows me to use the little up/down arrows to cycle through the months (but not days or years).

View 1 Replies View RelatedSay I search for "mp3" on my airdisk via finder. No results show up even though I know for a fact there are mp3's on the air disk.
I select "shared" and "filename" in the search bar when it comes up to search all shared drives with the filename (which has mp3 in it). Is this because spotlight doesn't index this drive?
I am about to switch over to a 17 MBP this August, and I was wondering how good Finder is in Leopard.
Msft's find/search feature was absolutely atrocious in XP and Vista--but if you have used Windows 7 you know that their new search function is absolutely brilliant. It works much like Mozilla's Thunderbird finder, where results are almost instantaneous (even before you finish typing the word) and very very accurate.
Can the new finder in Snow Leopard compete with Windows 7?
I am trying to find large folders on my hard drive. My Library is rather large, over two-gigs. Yet, if I do a search for Kind-Folder and Size-is greater than-1kb I get NOTHING! Why? Because the damn Finder is measuring the size of the folder itself, not its contents!!
