OS X V10.7 Lion :: Finder Search Shows Deleted "phantom" Files
Mar 23, 2012
I had recently attempted to uninstall Native Instruments FM8, and in an effort to do so, ran searches through my system Library folder and my user Library folder to find anything related to the software and remove them. Found around 100 preset sound files related to FM8, sent them to the trash and emptied the trash (not securely). Then after removing every file as listed on NI's website, restarting my computer, and running another Finder search in my Library folder, the sound files I had deleted earlier appear in the Finder search! However, right-clicking the files and selecting Get Info shows no directory for the file, and the files are unable to be deleted or have permissions modified.Â
I have already used the Disk Utility to repair disk permissions, but these phantom files still remain in my Finder search !Â
A phantom folder with the name of a folder that held photos has appeared in my finders>places list. I can't choose it to delete it. It won't move. It can't be found in a search. How can I choose it and delete it?
For whatever reason, my finder sidebar has one of my thousands of files which has made its way into it. I'd like to get rid of this, but have tried finder prefs without success. Clicking on it just opens the file.file://localhost/Users/home/Desktop/Finder.tiff
I'm using Finder to search for files on a server connected to my computer at work. The search results I am getting do not include all the files that meet my search criteria. For example, I am looking through photo files for any files with "34" in the name. Some files show up, but not all of them. See screenshot. I am searching in the "Branded Photoshoot" folder, and I am getting some results (Branded Photoshoot/Hilton Universal/IMG_1434), but another file that is in folder, though a different subfolder, (Branded Photoshoot/Architectural Center/IMG_1534) is NOT showing up. What is causing that subfolder and its files to not be included in the search results?
Finder indicates 4,5 GB stored photos in iPhoto library How come that the pictures do nor show in Iphoto(Only one icon photo per event)What must I do to make iPhoto present my pictures
I just installed Lion on a machine that I use daily. One of the routine things I do is connect to FTP servers and search their contents to then collect files and process them. I was unpleasantly surprised when I found that I was simply unable to search the FTP server, it simply doesn't bring back any results.Â
I tried on 2 other Lion Macs and both have the same symtoms, one of the other 2 macs is brand new out of the box (3 days old)Â I had to downgrade to Snow Leopard to return the machine to a useable state.Â
Is Apple aware of this issue, is there a workaround? I prefer to not install 3rd party FTP apps. In fact, I tried Transmit and it too would not search but I assure you that the host of FTP servers I login in to are just fine as any other PC or Mac (10.6 or inferior) work without any problem.Â
Has Apple changed something? PS the mac I tried it on was even cleanly installed, nothing but Apple SW and fully up-to-date.Â
I've been having this weird issue for a few weeks. In my main user account I get 9 0 byte files that show up in my trash. If I open trash and click delete files it goes through the motions (makes empty trash sound, closes trash window) but the files remain. The only way to remove them is to do a get info on all of them which pops up the get info window for a fraction of a second, closes it and the file disappears. Trash lists the file type as alias. I can't drag them to the desktop or anywhere outside of trash. I tried doing a secure erase just in case they were remnants of old files or something. The file names are seemingly random symbols. The file names seem to be the same each time, although they seem to move in different locations (higher, lower in list). The creation date is the same for all, December 31, 1904 4:00 pm. I have a screen shot attached. This issue is only happening in my main non-admin account. My other admin account this isn't happening.
I have recently installed Mac os X Lion on my work iMacs, and ever since I haven't been able to search on my windows server. I was running both leopard and snow leopard before, and back then it worked perfectly.
I just reinstalled Lion from a fresh harddrive. I did not use the migration asistance to pull files over to the new drive, I selested files and dragged them over, So not to fill the drive with things I dont need....Â
So I "Get info" on the main harddrive it shows Which is crazy! Then I use Disk Invintory and it shows: Â Â
and Disk Untility shows: Â Â
Why the difference? Simple question and How do I free up space? I'm also trying to back up using time capsule*

My finder windows seem to show that I'm "sharing" with other computers. I have file sharing turned off in System Preferences. On the left side of the finder window it shows "Favorites" and under that "Shared" pops up with what I assume are other computers nearby. These are not names of other computers in my house. These computer names pop up and come and go. They are the same two names. Underneath the "shared" names, my external drives show up under "Devices". My cable modem is connected to an Apple Airport Extreme router. Any ideas on why this "sharing" is showing up?Is my data secure?Â
my usb is connected with my Mac air,but i accidentally click =hide from sidebar=.and now it cannot be shown in the sidebar.what can i do to show it back?
Saw today in Lions new layout under "This Computer" that my harddrive contains 147GB (out of 320 GB) of movies.Â
Is there any clever way to track those movie files.Â
The movie files are probably spread all over the computer. I have for instace made a great deal of Final Cut clips
that tend to be saved in several copies spread in different folders. Besides that, I probably have film and film clips in every imaginable file format that have been saved and forgotten through the years :-) (my iMac is from -07)Â Â
I had to get a new computer when the old one died. My backup drive has files from both the old and new computers. The image I want isn't in the new computer, but neither finder or Time Machine will let me acess the "pictures" folder from the old machine's backup. In get info, permissions on the folder say "custom" (whatever that means - I don't ever remember setting it. Is there any way I can get to these files? How can you change permissions on a file that was created on a different computer?
How do I know WHERE the files are located when I search via Spotlight? I search but do not always wish to click file or application to open .. I just want to know its location. Snow Leopard showed me the path so where is that information in Lion's spotlight?
I'm trying out 10.7 for the first time (was using 10.6). I notice that in Finder, when I do shift-apple-F, to Find files by name, it doesn't seem to be searching system files like it did on 10.6. Is this configurable - how do I make it search and show me EVERY file on the disk matching criteria? I did a terminal command to show "hidden files" and now the Desktop has .localized and .SD_Store files (which I didn't want to see necessarily) but this hasn't seemed to help me find files below /Library and so on.
I have a folder full of HTML files I just imported to my MacBook about a week ago. They have been backed up by my Time Capsule. But when I search for keywords in the contents of them, they do not show up. The file names will show up, but none of the contents (which are mainly text). I have tried to force Spotlight to search only the folder that contains the files, but it does not seem to be searching the HTML files.Â
Are HTML file contents excluded from Spotlight searches? I seem to have a number of webpages that come in Spotlight for keyword searches that appear to be the result of searching the file contents. So is there a trick to this? Is there some way I can force Spotlight to index this folder? Just not sure why it seems to search the contents of some HTML files and not others.
I'm using mail on various machines to access an Exchange server account. It generally works with no problems, but on my work MacPro (and only on this computer not the iMac at home, various laptops, iPad, iPhone etc) mail tells me there is an unread message. However, I can't find this message and it's not there when I use a webmail interface to access the same account. No problem, I figured I could just right click on the mailbox and 'mark all messages as read', but this doesn't work! I like to keep a clear inbox with no unread messages
I´m having a strange problem with my itunes store. When I make a search in itunes store nothing shows up. Its really strange. It´s like itunes store finds titles (I can scroll in a result window) but letters of the titles are invisible. Meaning there are no letters at all. My itunes is fully updated. I´ve got a MacBook Pro, OS X (version 10.9.3).Â
Had to get my HD replaced in my iMac. Have been trying to get individual files off my Time Machine backup. Â
I go the "Browse other time machine disks" route but when it opens all it ever shows me is a single file with the name of my old HD. It won't display any files inside that volume. Â
I can "Show package contents" on the file itself to get to the files inside but it seems like some files are restored in time machine only.
Specifically the itunes library file gets broken into ,last, add , delete files, which my current iTunes install errors on when trying to import.
Whenever I delete a file, it is immediately deleted, regardless of type, size or location. I found the site below but I seem to be going in circles and the directions there don't seem to work for me. I have a Macbook Pro, 10.7.3, with an abundance of space. [URL]..
Mac OS X 10.7.3 Macbook Late 2008 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo · 3 GB RAM.- When In delete any file the administrator password is needed and file wont appear on Trash. I disable secure trash.
I have MAC OS X 10.7 macbook pro. I accidentally deleted one account. And i dont know to recover those files inside.. I want to retrieve those files inside this account.
On my macbook pro which is using mountain lion, by safari search engine preferences is set to google, but when i enter a search term it defaults to bing. Only noticed this problem after downloading adobe flash player for what it's worth.
