OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Nickname Field Listed Into Field Of Apple Mail?
Apr 4, 2012
If you have a contact in Addressbook (AB) with a nickname, if you also use Apple Mail (AM) and create a new email and start to type the contact's email in the TO field, AM will finish your typing giving you a list of related possible email addresses to choose from. The problem is that in addition to the email addressk AM adds the contact's nickname as opposed to it's firstname/lastname or even business name. We need a preference for this, per contact.Â
Example:Â In AB you have a contact:Â
Name: Jon Doe
Company Doe Company
Nickname: The Doester
email: jon.doe@doecompany.comÂ
In AM you start to write an email:Â and type: "jon" and AM shows you a list of possible related emails one of which will be:Â "The Doester" [URL]Commentary: now if a casual email to a friend, this is OK. But what if this is a business oriented email and "The Doester" isn't appropriate? You can only stop the inclusion of "The Doester" by deleting it from the Nickname field in the AB. This is presumptuous on Apple's part, or a bug, that the Nickname should trump the first/lastname or company name.Â
I don't exactly know the answser to this. If we could easily choose which name to append in front of the email address (firstname/lastname, company name or nickname) that would be cool. Or maybe no name gets added if it has to be: all or nothing from a programming point of view. But having nickname as the primary, if it exists, can be a problem in certain correspondence IMHO.Â

I have some email addresses for various web addresses for my business web site and I just noticed that when sending an email to one of these, mac mail is showing my name in the To box. Does anyone know where this gets pulled from so I can change it? I am not seeing it in the preferences for some reason.

I'm trying to sent up an automatic response email in mail rules, the problem is when I filter the email I want to respond to, I don't get the option to send a response to the "Reply-To" field, I can only reply to the "From" field which is no good to me. The mails I receive are booking inquiries generated by an online form so the "From" field is always the same email address not the guest address which is in the "Reply-To" field.

I used to enjoy being able to look at the To field in mail - It was handy to quickly go through my spam folder. If things weren't To me they were junk. How can I display the To in mail, specifically in the Junk folder?

When I first set up my mail application on Mac to sync up with my web based mail (hotmail) I did not uncheck the flag NOT to remove the emails from the server. This resulted in all my mails until 2010 (time of Mail setup) to be synched up with Mail app on Mac AND removal of them from the hotmail server. Because of this, they are not accessible through Web interface anymore.
Since hotmail is using POP, I am unable to sync it back from Mail app to the hotmail server. I am trying to redirect all emails from Mail app to my hotmail account, but the redirection changes the from address field. I thought that the difference between Forward and Redirect was the way these functions interpret and act on the From field like:
- Forward function would change the From field to show the current account it is sent from
- Redirect function would keep From field intact in the message, so that my hotmail would see the original From field and not the one of my Mail account server.
It seems that both of these functions work more or less the same in Mail app. Could I get a clarification on it, or at least a solution on how to get my mail back to the hotmail server? I do not want to forward, since all the messages will appear like they were from me, causing a big mess.

I've recently migrated to Lion and am finding the new layout of Mail frustrating as it shows my mail by the recipient rather than the sender. As the recipient is usually me, I have what appears to be a inbox of emails to myself but I have to open each email (or preview it) to reveal who actually sent it to me. Is there a way to have the sender (From field) showing in the list rather than the To field?
I need to have them sorted by Date so that the most recent messages are at the top. But when I choose View > Message Attributes the option to select "From" is already ticked but it is also greyed out. I have temporarily fixed this by using the classic view but I would really like to know how to do this in the new view?

I have a peculiar problem to which I have been unable to find a solution, despite searching far and wide on the Internet.
I access my company's microsoft exchange server email account through mail.app on my mac. In setting up this account, everything was detected easlity and I can send and receive mail without any issue, except one:
When I send an email, my name, in the From field, gets stripped as it gets sent. If I keep the mail as draft, I can see my email address in the From field, but when I finally send the email, that field gets stripped and is now blank.
So now, when I go back and look into my "sent" folder, the from field is blank.
This does not happen when I send email, via the same exchange account, from my iphone or ipad, only mail.app does this. This also does not happen when I send email through my yahoo or gmail account via mail.app.

In windows I can tab from one entry field box to the next. You can do this in OS X too with the exception of boxes with choices. For example when I am filling out an address and I tab down to the state box it won't let me select it. In windows I am able to tab the the state box, hit F on my keyboard and it selects the state of Florida without ever having to use my mouse. Anyway to do this in mac?

I switched to Bento from Filemaker a fews back because my primary use is rather simple - a pilot logbook. All has been fine until recently. The tabbing order of my fields has somehow changed as I do data input.
Filemaker had a command to Change Tab Order so a user could jump to fields in a desired order. So far I have found no Bento equivalent.

A friend used my Mac a month ago and his email address often comes up in my FROM: email field. I am the default but I must hit it every once in a while and his email address is selected. When my recipient gets my message it's says it's from HIM. How can I delete his name so it isn't a choice in the FROM: email field? I looked in Mail preferences and his email address is NOT listen next to mine under Preferences>Accounts.
Please not this isn't happening in the TO: field. For that I'd just choose WINDOW>Previous Recipients>Delete.

When I start to type an email address in the TO section of my email it attempts to autocomplete the field from my address book data.
This is really useful but it ALSO autocompletes from previous email addresses that I have entered (including ones that are no longer active).

I have not seen anyone address the following problem. Nevertheless, it absolutely annoys me, and I wonder if anyone knows how to fix it. Sometimes, when I press the normal COMMAND+SHIFT key sequence to use Spotlight, the Spotlight search field will drop down lower on the screen. It will still be on the correct side, but it will drop down near the middle of the screen. In other words, the Spotlight search field will not be attached to the menu bar in the upper-right corner (next to the clock and the day of the week) where it normally appears. However, during those instances, it will pop back into place if I do one of two things: 1) start typing into the Spotlight field anyway or 2) Change my resolution to 1680x1050. This really annoys me when it happens. Does anyone know how to fix this so that it never happens again? It doesn't happen a lot, but I don't want it to happen again, and I absolutely love using Spotlight. I'm a Spotlight addict. Also, if there's a fix, can someone tell me anything I can do to Snow Leopard, so that the Spotlight search field never pops out of place again?
Sorry, but I'm very much a perfectionist.
Here's a screen shot of how it looks when it happens. I snapped it off the desktop when it happened last time:[URL]

I am posting this in the Mac Pro forum because I am not seeing this issue on my my Macbook Pro, and therefore think it may be machine-specific. Since upgrading my Mac OS to Lion, the first keystroke is often rejected by the password field on the login screen. The field accepts the keystroke initially, but then "refreshes" and blanks out. This causes a lot of login errors, and I have to retype my password. It only happens when first logging in, never on the second entry of my password. Also, it happens equally often whether logging in on a cold boot, or when logging back in after logging out. Additionally, it doesn't happen every single time, although it happens a lot. My Lion system is an upgrade/install, and I often wonder if a clean install would fix this.

I am fairly new to the world of mac's and I'm having a problems with my photo's. On my old windows PC I have 1000's of photo's. When I right click on a photo in windows and go to 'details' it will tell me the exact date and time when it was taken. So if I then import them into some library software such as picasa, it sorts it them all out by this date. However, I've now copied all my photo's to my new imac and the 'date taken' field doesn't seem to be there. When I import them into iphoto or picasa etc, they are totally messed up and all over the place.
Why did OSX loose that data? I will try to explain a little better using screenshots. This screenshot is from windows: [URL]. At the top is says 'date taken' and any windows photo library software will sort it by this date. Below are the properties of the same file after it's copied to osx: [URL]. It contains lots of information about the picture but not when it was taken. So software such as iphoto or picasa sorts it by it's created date (which you can see at the top is Monday 12th January). Why isn't OSX carrying over the exif data on when the photo was taken?

I needed it for field research. The main thing I regret missing out on the upgrade was the mini display port which carrys both video and audio, as the amount of wires I have hanging around are a nightmare. Can anyone tell me if there is likely to be a third party software fix that could enable the use of this feature or is it different hardware?
