OS X V10.7 Lion :: Local Hard Drive Marked As Excluded From Backups
Mar 18, 2012It was under my understanding that on a laptop Lion will continue to take snaphots even when it is disconnected from the drive it uses to store time machine backups. However I have a message back up failed, when I opened the time machine preferences I see this;
So I went in to the options to see what items are being excluded from the backups and lone behold my local drive is marked as to be excluded. The problem is it is greyed out and I can't remove it.
Also, I don't know if this is related, but when I try to look enter time machine there is nothing present. The only time I can see my backups is by holding down the option key and selecting browse other backup disks. Is there a library file or something I can delete without loosing my past backup history?

Mar 30, 2012I would like to create a Smart folder that only has applications & utilities in a sub-folder.
This will be similar to the default applications folder that shows in the dock, but without all the extra files & folders - just a list of applications.
I can do this by esily by just having a smart folder of applications showing only type=application.
However, I would still like to have utilities in a sub-folder.
If thats not possible, then it would be OK to have 2 seperate smart folders, 1 for apps excluding utilities & 1 for utilities only.
Is there some way in the smart folder options i can exclude a sub directory?

Jul 2, 2012I love Smart Mailboxes in Apple Mail. I have been getting emails from a subscribed content provider and now I realize that I'd like to have a Smart Mailbox with all of the past and future mailings from them. Is there any way to select just one (or all) of the emails I have received and create a Smart Mailbox with a single menu selection? I have tried selecting one of them, then 'New Smart Mailbox...' bt it doesn't recognize I have a selection...or doesn't put the sender of the email nto the recipient field (which is the default criteria in a new Smart Mailbox'). If it doesn't now do this, hey, Apple, future feature?

Apr 7, 2012I have recently created a smart folder.
I have tons of Boy Scout files all over the place and wanted to identify them at anytime.
I figured out how to create the folder but I can't create a file name it without .savedSearch being part of the folder name. Aarrggh!!
No matter what I do I cannot remove the .savedSeach from the end of the name. If I right click for Rename the folder, only the characters BEFORE .savedSearch are highlighted for change. If I right click and choose Get Info and select hide extension, no change.
I've seen other online tutorials for the Smart Folder function in Lion and none of them have their folder name appended.

Hardware :: Recovering Apple Hard Drive After SMART Status Failed?
Oct 30, 2010A while back I removed a Apple Hard Drive after I thought I had shut down the computer. Instead, it had just slept and so still had the power on. This caused the file system in the hard drive to fail, so I erased and rebuilt the file system on the Hard Drive. It worked fine for another day, and then failed. When I went to see if I could fix it, Disk Utility said the S.M.A.R.T status had failed and the send the hard drive to an apple specialist. Is there any way I could fix the Hard Drive myself?

May 24, 2012I accidentally formatted my external hard drive when I was creating a Windows USB install disk with Boot Camp It was a HFS+ formatted drive with a GUID partition table and 2 partitions: one clone of my Macbook OS, and one with personal data. I'm not worried about the OS clone, I'm more concerned about getting my personal data back on the second partition.So far I've used Stellar Phoenix and Data Rescue 3. I reformatted the hard drive from FAT to HFS+ before I did these scans. Not sure if it was a good idea, but the programs wouldn't scan properly otherwise.Stellar finds my files with the original folder structure, but I can't open any of the files, even though the file sizes seem to be correct. Data Rescue partially finds the original folder structure, and also has a "Reconstructed files" section which has all my files sorted by file type and without the original file name. I really want to avoid going through all my photos, videos, etc. one by one to sort them out.
Can I still recover my files in the original folder structure? Why can Stellar find all my files basically intact, but I can't open anything? In the meantime, I'm going to try scanning with Disk Drill and FileSalvage with fingers crossed...

Jun 30, 2012I disabled local snapshots because they were using up 43GB of hard disk space that I needed for other things.I used this command in terminal: sudo tmutil disablelocal..Instead of having the local snapshots be deleted, they are somehow littering my hard drive still.I have searched my drive, but still can't find them. Is there any way I can reclaim this hard disk space?I also tried running a repair in disk utility and re-indexing Macintosh HD.

Apr 19, 2010i just installed a new 2nd, (750 gb) hard drive into my g5 because my first 250gb is nearly full. I'm trying to launch logic but the file is way to big. It wont let me install this program from my new, second hard drive because the message i get is that it supposed to launch from the primary or running hard drive. Can anyone tell me how i can make my second hard drive my new primary hard drive? I got the .dmg for my leapord osx. but not the originals anymore. can anybody help me with this. i'm pretty sure it's simple, i just don't know how to do this.

Mar 1, 2012I've had a lot of problems with my iMac G5 power supply and since I have newer computers I've decided to get rid of this computer.
I want to save the hard drive and put it in a case, then use it as an external drive on my other Macs.
What sort of case do I need to shop for? Should I look for SATA or what exactly is the proper nomenclature.
Is USB 2 the preferred choice, or Firewire, or what? Is there a USB 3? I use a mid-2010 27 inch iMac with the intel processor, and I needed to buy an adapter to use my older Firewire external drive. Is Firewire a dodo?

Jun 7, 2012I have two sets of contacts in my address book, one on local drive and one from iCloud. How do I delete all the contacts from my local drive as they are all out of date?
I have tried deleting the contacts but they keep reappearing. I have tried to create a new group and they keep disappearing! I have read forums and some talk about removing the two addressbook.plist files but I don't even have those in my preference folder...
If I do not have those files, where is my address book storing these contact information and how do I get rid of them? It is driving me nuts having to deal with two lots of each contact and not being able to create groups or delete contacts.

Jan 7, 2010My friend gave me his old Apple cube G4 + 15" Cinema display in like 1000 pieces. Its completely teared apart. I tried a lot, but it doesn't work. The original IDE cable wasn't included, so I bought one for 2 cents. It should work or not? Maybe the powersupply. I'm not sure. I don't believe actually that the hardware itself, like the motherboard is broken. When everything is into place and I connect the cube to the powersupply it boots immediately. I don't have to do anything. Harddrive spins and the superdrive makes some noise as well. This repeats itself every 5 seconds. The screen is connected and gets power through DVI, but no display. Both the cube and display have touch enabled buttons to switch it on, but they do not respond (I guess).. Motherboard gives 2 light. DS1 is green, DS2 is red.
