OS X :: IMac G4 Will Not Power Up

Jun 21, 2010

I have an OLD iMac G4 that was working fine, but I went to turn it on one day and it wouldn't power up. I took off the round bottom and cleaned any dust off, have replaced the lithium battery, and put it back together again. Still no power.

IMac :: 2006 IMac Versus 27" Power Consumption?

Oct 24, 2010

I just found this environmental report for the 27" iMac's on Apple's web site, which lists the amount of power they use when off/asleep/idle.

There doesn't seem to be a similar document for the Late 2006 iMac's. I'm just wondering if anybody knows the power consumption stats for the older iMac's (the 20" model in particular) - I'm interested to now how the newer models compare as I'll be buying one soon.

OS X :: IMac USB Power Not Working

May 14, 2009

I have an iMac 2.4Ghz 24" about 18 months old. After a visitor's mains powered hard drive (which was later shown to be already faulty!) was connected I lost the power to the USB bus inside the iMac. I can still use devices that need power with an USB port expander but this is far from ideal. USB data is working fine as is the firewire port. Simply the power to the USB. I have reset the PRAM but not yet reset the Power Management Unit. I assume there is no physical fuse for the USB power internally as I have not seen a reference to one anywhere. Should I reset the PMU?

Are the USB and their power integral to the motherboard? On start up I get the error message: "USB Over Current Notice. A USB device is currently drawing too much power. The hub it is attached to will be deactivated." I get this error message even when nothing not even keyboard is plugged in (so its not that faulty keyboard error). There really is no power at the USB ports - but data is working

Imac G5 Wont Power On?

Feb 7, 2012

i have an iMac G5 that i recently bought from one of my dads friends who had never really used it. (he had also bought it used)when i push the power button the fan turns on very quietly and softly. and after a bit it starts to work really hard, no start up sound is heard and the screen doesnt turn on.I have reset the PRAM and the SMU and both methods only worked once in a while.and when it did turn on it would freeze (sometimes after a while and sometimes right off the bat) and id have to shut it down, I have checked the diagnostic LEDs and the power supply is running as it should. only things that are noticable with this computer when i opened it up was that

-there was no fan cover

-the middle screw was stripped

-the power cord isnt an authentic iMac power cord, it looks to be one from an old windows computer or something of that sort.i am also not using an apple mouse or keyboard

IMac :: Won't Start- Power Supply?

Nov 26, 2010

Tried to wake my 24" white iMac from sleep yesterday and discovered that it was off. Pressed the button in back but no go. Unplugged and replugged, pressed the button and it fired up fine. Surfed a bit, then put it back to sleep.

Came back about 3 hours later and it was off again. Unplugged and replugged, pressed the button and nothing. Tried it a couple more times just to check, and no go.

Any ideas? I've had this computer for a little over two years. Bought it used and bought Applecare which expired on.... Nov. 16th. Beautiful timing or what.

Mac :: Heat Power In IMac Vs. MacBook Pro

Dec 23, 2009

Maybe someone can help me understand this a bit better. I have a MBP with a 2.16GHz CPU. I think it's about 2.5 years old. It has the ATI x1600 GPU. My dad previously had an iMac G5 2GHz but now has one of the new iMacs at 3.06GHz.When running iStat, I can notice an obvious difference in the CPU temperature. I don't think my MBP runs less than 120 degrees idle, while the iMacs were easily under 100. I haven't seen the new iMac while doing CPU-intensive tasks, but the old iMac never got above 140 if I'm not mistaken. As I'm encoding video on the MBP for a DVD using iDVD, it's getting up to 187 degrees. The CPU is using about 125 percent of my processing power -- 200 percent max if you didn't know. The temperature is the same even when HandBrake gets up to about 190 percent of processing.

IMac :: Music Production - More Cpu Power?

Jul 14, 2010

what new imac to get. I really need to upgrade my macbook because I do a lot of music production and I need more cpu power. Currently I have a C2D 2.0 ghz T7200 and 2gb of RAM. What I need to run: Around 40-45 tracks (24 bit 44100Hz) in Ableton/Logic with around 4 devices (EQ, reverb etc) on each track. As one can imagine my macbook doesn't cope with this. Audio starts lagging and I need to freeze tracks which dramatically decreases my working efficiency. So I decided to get a new imac, I don't need more power than what the above requires. Other apps I will run is the CS4 suite but that doesn't require as much power as my music production. So mainly for music I was thinking a 3.06 ghz would do the trick. From benchmarks I see it's about twice as powerful as my current CPU. Would it be enough? By the way, I know about the coming update, but that can only be better than the 3.06 C2D so that's not the issue here.

IMac :: Intel-Based Unable To Power On - How To Fix It

Not sure what I did. I didn't take anything apart. I checked over the whole compartment and all connectors appear to still be connected.

I did some research figured out how to disassemble the IMac, purchased a new hard drive, backed up the computer and when I took it all apart there was a third connector on the hard drive (temp sensor?). The new drive did not have this connector so instead of experimenting I put the computer all back together.

IMac :: Question Mark On Screen At Power On?

Nov 3, 2009

My iMac stays on 100% of the time, but a few months ago I turned it off for about 18 hours during a storm. When I turned it back on, I got the flashing question mark. I turned it off & back on about 8-10 times, when it finally booted up just fine.

It never does it at a reboot, only if off a while. For several months, it did this any time it was off a while.

About 6 weeks ago, it stopped doing it! Now, I can't MAKE it happen!

I should feel lucky, but I'm also nervous about an impending failure. When SL came out, I repartitioned the drive, first going to MBR, then back to GUID, just to re-write everything. That neither helped (the issue was already gone), nor hurt.

IMac :: Actual Measurement Of Power Consumption

Nov 19, 2009

I'm considering to buy a new iMac (21,5"/nvidia or ati) and I'm wondering if someone has already measured the actual power consumption. In it's environmental paper, Apple documents that it uses less than 2W in sleep mode and 37,5 W with the display off. Did anyone try if this is also measured in real life? I may sound a bit paranoid, but half a year ago I bought a mac mini 2007 at a stock clearance, and I was shocked to find out that just the powerblock plugged in already consumes 8W, the mini itself in standby consumes 11W. Add to that a screen, external speakers and an external disk and the total standby power consumption of the lot is 25W. Terrible.

Besides the energy consumption, I'm also a bit disappointed with the speed of the mini, but that's probably largely due to the low RAM (1GB). So rather than going for the latest mini model, I'd like to go for the power of an iMac. But I would be really happy if someone could confirm the power consumption. Specifically I'm looking for power consumption
- In sleep mode
- While streaming itunes to an airport express, with the display off
(I assume the display goes to sleep automatically when streaming. Right?)
- While in normal, not too heavy operation (eg surfing, mailing & itunes)
