IMac :: Do Macs Not Need Extra Video Power?

Dec 16, 2009

Well my desktop just crapped out on me and I really don't want to invest money to rebuild it. I was looking at the IMacs but my one concern is about gaming. I really only play WoW but I also want the option to maybe play something newer. I am a little concerned with Macs lack of video cards and in order to get at least 512mb I have to spend 2k. Do macs not need that extra video power?

Mac Pro :: Are There Extra 4-pin Power Connectors?

Dec 29, 2010

I bought a PCIe eSATA card for my Mac Pro and have installed it, and the system sees it and I'm able to install drivers, but disks aren't showing up when i plug them in.

There is a 4pin power connector on the board as well, but I think that's just so it can power external devices via the 2 power plugs it has on the back.

Are there extra 4pin power cables inside the tower, or a place for me to plug some more in?

Power Mac :: Timeout Error - Printing Extra Page Per Job?

Jun 15, 2012

Mac Pro with 10.7.3 and Minolta 1250e PagePro printer, which is listed under the Driver tab as a Generic Postscript Printer. Apple did not have anything for this model listed under the popup menu selection "Select Printer Software". The driver for printer was written for classic so I can't install it from the CD.

Everything prints, but an extra page is also printed with the following message:

ERROR: timeout

OFENDING COMMAND: timeout

STACK:

Printer is connected to a usb port which connected directly into the back of the Mac.

Hardware :: Leave Charger Plugged In Cause Extra Power Consumption

Aug 5, 2010

So I just got hold of a few of these new battery chargers from Apple and I'm just wondering if these are meant to stay plugged in the wall, even after the green light goes off. Does the light going off mean that the batteries will no longer draw power from the power outlet and that it is safe to assume power will continue to be consumed? Or is it preferred that I plug and unplug the charger only when needed to avoid any, unnecessary, extra power consumption?

Mar 23, 2009

Just wondering, if I were to go for a higher specd Imac with a more powerful video card (thinking possibly the refurb with the 8800), would this be a significantly bigger energy drain, or does the card not kick in to full force unless a task requires it to do so?

Mac Pro :: Building A Mac Pros Or Power Macs?

Sep 1, 2008

This doesn't pertain specifically to Mac Pros or Power Macs, but I couldn't find a better place for this.

Is it possible to build a Mac from scratch, like a PC? I've looked everywhere and I can't seem to find what proprietary hardware, if any, Apple still uses. I use a macbook right now and I'm wondering if it's as simple as booting with the Leopard install disc.

On a similar note, is it possible to use boot camp on a separate internal drive rather than partitioning an existing one formatting for OS X?

IMac :: Replacement HD - Performance Increase With Extra Capacity?

Apr 21, 2010

I'm considering replacing the 640 gb Hitachi HDT721064SLA360 in my 24" iMac with a Samsung Spinpoint F3EG HD203WI 2TB drive. I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me whether I will see any performance increases along with the extra capacity. The Hitachi is a 7200rpm drive, while the Sammy is 5400rpm, but the Hitachi has only a 16mb buffer and the Sammy sports a 32mb. Would the Samsung be faster than the Hitachi or would it suffer because of the lower rotational speed?

IMac :: Imaging Macs With NVIDIA Chipsets?

I work for a higher education institute and we are looking into getting new Macs this coming summer, we've recently purchased two 2009 Mac mini's and I imaged them with our stock Mac clone (10.5.6). Obviously due to recent hardware changes it didn't work perfectly (no gui boot) but it did function, I just wanted to know if there was a way of updating key components to make it work perfectly so that I can integrate it instead of having to create a complete new clone?

Power Mac :: G5 Has No Video Out?

Apr 28, 2012

I recently inherited a PowerMac G5 from an old friend of mine. The HDD was scavanged.  I replaced it with another, 320gb.  It's completely blank. I have a generic graphics card installed, with a DVI cord going to a 24" Asus monitor. The computer will turn on, no video feed. After letting it sit there for about two minutes, the fans go faster, still no video.

OS X :: Additional Power For Video Card In Mac Pro?

,A friend just recently purchased a NVIDIA Video Card and went to install it in his new Mac Pro but could not find a source to hook up additional power to the card. He called Apple and they weren't able to tell him how to connect to the Mac power supply.

Does the motherboard provide the necessary power so that he doesn't need to hook up the extra power cable to the card or does he need a booster cable etc?

Power Mac :: Compatible Video Card For G5?

Apr 22, 2012

so apparently my G5 needs a video card. I was not booting and wouldn't shut down. I reinstalled tiger but no difference. it will boot in safemode but I get lines across the display. they are in "groups of three" small squiggly lines.

Apple store says they think its video card but they will not support it because its "vintage"... I guess "computer years" are similar to dog years the card it came with is GeForce 6800 Ultra with 256mb ram. OWC has a Radeon 5770 with 1G of ram for 270.00 but this card is not compatible with my machine. it says it needs 10.6 or later... but I cannot upgrade the OS cuz leopard requires Intel processor.

so my question is, if a 1G card is 270.00... one that is compatible with my machine should be less I would think? also, even If I could find a compatible 1G card, I think it would be like having a Ferrari and only using 1st gear you know? cuz I would be bottle necked at the processors.. I would think? so what is compatible with the G5 but more ram than the current 256mb?

PowerPC :: G4 2x500 Power But No Chime - No Video - No Usb?

Mar 7, 2008

Ive got a G4 Power Mac 2x500MHz that Im getting a bit frustrated with.

Situation:
- Power supply seems to work as power flows once I hit the power button. Fans spin, red light comes on the board, connected drives spin up, drawers open.
- No chime. At first it was sporadic, but now non-existent.
- No video output. Has the original AGP ATI 128 Rage Pro graphics card.
- No power to USB ports? Try plugging in devices that light up in USB but nothing happens.

What Ive tried:
- Ive replaced the board with a known good board and get the same results, and of course i thought this was the main problem. I did get a tiny whiff of burning smell from the previous board, though no signs of physical defect on it. No smell from the new board.
- Replaced and swapped around about 6 different ram sticks.
- Tried PCI graphics card (probably not compatible though) and no results, as expected.
- Reset PMU of course.
- Swapped processors.

Mac Pro :: Install 2 Video Cards That Use Power Cables In One?

Apr 22, 2012

I have a Mac pro 1,1 model and recently upgraded the video card to a Saphirre 6870 card. It works great right out of the box on both Mac and pc side of my Mac pro. From my online research, this card seems to be the best card that works with my mac pro so far, however I plan on getting an even more powerful card to use exclusively on my windows partition for games. I want to get a 6970 card, but that one may not work on the Mac side, so I plan on using both cards (the 6970 for the pc side, and the 6870 for the Mac side). There are two ways that I think may be possible but I wouldn't know how. One, is there a switch device that allows me to switch between cards without having to disconnect and reconnect them every time ? And second possible way, is there a way to house the second video card externally with its own power supply? The issue if that the are not enough power connections for both cards, so is there a way to power one card externally?
