View 11 Replies View RelatedI have 3 questions here to ask:
1. Some say that sleep consume less power than boot, but some say it isn't. Which is true? and how it can be?
2. Is it true that charging your macbook pro until 100% then unplug it will make cycle count go faster than using AC power all day and ONLY using battery when we couldn't find AC outlet will make it slower?
3. i found that some macbook user leave their macbook charged all the time and some macbook user prefer use battery all the time. Which way is better?
Info:
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)
When downloading via wireless network at a high speed, my PB 12" will consume a lot of CPU power. For instance, 1MB/s, almost 90% CPU.
View 1 Replies View RelatedActually finally got some money together for a mac. Selling my Gaming PC, but I was wondering, have the monitors been updated? I was in best-buy around the time dual core was still around, and noticed the 27 inches were significantly more vibrant. Is this the same case with the new iMacs? I don't really need portability, definitely need to have a stable desktop.
View 3 Replies View RelatedLooking to get a new desktop and I've decided an iMac fits the bill perfectly as I believe it's the best value on the market by far. Anyway, I plan to get Fusion 3.0 here fairly soon, and will likely use Windoze7, and a distro or two or linux with it. Do you think that having 8GB of RAM would benefit enough to go for it? (It'd just order it afterward I'm sure, and install myself) I would be using both MS and Linux OS's for work, and hopefully some play if VM's will allow some decent gaming.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI thought it would be interesting as well as a good learning point for new Mac users whether you are moving files from your old PC to Mac or Mac to Mac. Explain if you would what method you are using such as Time Machine, or manual backups, or utilizing Mobile Me for your misc backups and how did you use them. What other methods worked for you? Be specific if you don't mind. I think this would be educational for all concerned. Let the Discussion begin:
View 15 Replies View RelatedMy original 1st iMac (3.06 ATI) has a "OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670s" dvd drive. My identical replacement has a "PIONEER DVD RW DVRTS08. Is this the norm across the range? I'm assuming both are similar?
View 1 Replies View RelatedHow do you transfer all of your files/ music/ photos/ videos/ etc. on to your new Mac? Is there some cord you need to plug in to transfer everything, or should I go to the local Apple Store and have them do everything?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm purchasing a new iMac intel core2 duo and want to connect it and my G4 500MHz Power Mac tower and 550Mhz PowerBook wirelessly to the internet. I have Cable modem at the front of my house and will put the iMac in a different room about 10m away. I have my G4 tower separate from the house about 40m away and my PowerBook won't be more than 10m from the modem. I am purchasing a 500GB Time Capsule to act as a wireless router and as an external hard drive for the iMac. How do I, or can I, connect the other two macs to the internet wirelessly?
The advice 1: iMac is fine.
G4 Tower_install an airport express card (802.11n) and insert where the old card should go. It should connect to internet wirelessly.
PowerBook_same thing(?)
The advice 2:
G4 Tower_install a Shintaro USB2.0 5-Port PCI Card and Addlogix USB 2.0 54MBps Wireless Adaptor
PowerBook_can't do anything for it.
I am looking for a ups for my macpro so wanted to ask you guys how much energy the macpro consumes? I asked at the apple store and a tech guy told me the minimum a macpro (stock configuration) uses is 250watts and the maximum 350watts, can I trust these numbers?
I have the stock configuration with a geforce 8800 and added 4 more hard drives and another 8800, so I am guessing I will need an ups around 600 watts?
I ran out of hard drive space. 7 gigs left out of 85. So I wiped and reinstalled, to try to speed things up, get rid of any fragmentation, etc. I have yet to install Photoshop, and I think I may have a few .plist files left to transfer over, but right now, with ALL of my data back on it, I have 35 gigs free. That's 28 more then I did before.
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter talking to AppleCare, my understanding is that FileVault works by storing the entire home directory as an encrypted disk image. Fair enough, this makes sense.
However, I'm going to configure my Mac Pro with an SSD as the boot disk, and plan to move my home directory off to the non-boot disk. With FileVault enabled, this raises a couple concerns for the SSD Boot disk.
I'm considering getting a 15" MBP, but am trying to decide if it's worth the little extra to get the 2.66 over the 2.53. I have been comparing the differences and I found out that the 2.53 only has 1 fan, whereas the 2.66 has 2. If both are using the 9400m, would the 2.66 run significantly cooler? If so by how much do you think? Would it be better in the long run for the computer?
View 20 Replies View RelatedMy Macbook Pro 13' with 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 processor with 500 gb in my Macintosh HD slowed down so much all of a sudden. I tried everything, resetting NVRAM and PRAM, tried to repair the disk and also tried to repair disk permissions, but to no avail. I even tried to reformat it and reinstalled Mac OSx 10.6.7 using the installation disc and also upgraded it to 10.6.8. It's working better after I reformatted it, but somehow its still slow. Its not laggy but in whatever I do, the stupid rainbow wheel/spinning beachball keeps coming up. Even the simplest of things take a long time to process, like opening safari. Also, the boot up is taking such a long time and it is not as smooth as before. So, because of this I'm starting to suspect that theres a problem with my processor?

Mac FW800: 75MB/sec. Win USB3: 150MB/sec.
Also, the Mac USB2 implementation is roughly half the speed of Windows. 17MB/sec vs 33MB/sec sequential read.
If I run iPartition on a half-full 1 or 2TB drive to make a second smaller partition on that drive, would it be significantly faster than using disk utility and restoring the files from a backup?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to calibrate my 23" Cinema Display and am having trouble getting the proper results. I am using a Pantone Spyder from roughly 2002 and have the latest version of the PhotoCal software (which is no longer supported for Macintosh.) So has hardware/software for colorimeters advanced significantly in the last 8 or 9 years? Is it worth investing in a newer colorimeter for more accurate results?
View 5 Replies View RelatedSince I updated to Lion PDF, JPG and TIFF files open up very slowly in PREVIEW. Same with RTF files in TEXTEDIT. This is very apparent if the files are on a server in the network.

There are some slower Macs on 10.6 in the network that open up 10x faster !!

View 7 Replies View RelatedI just found this environmental report for the 27" iMac's on Apple's web site, which lists the amount of power they use when off/asleep/idle.
There doesn't seem to be a similar document for the Late 2006 iMac's. I'm just wondering if anybody knows the power consumption stats for the older iMac's (the 20" model in particular) - I'm interested to now how the newer models compare as I'll be buying one soon.
I have a MBP 2.16 ghz core2duo leopard 10.5.8, which I use mainly for schoolwork(I'm a teacher), recently I bought an Imac G5(tiger10.4) so I would have more space on my desk, I tried to move files etc. over to the iMac (firewire) and found out that newer software does not transfer to an older version and I ordered an install DVD to put leopard on the iMac, can I use the migration option to get files over to the iMac after the leopard install or do I have to update leopard first to get it at the same level as my MBP?
View 3 Replies View RelatedStraight to the point here is what I would like to be able to do (if possible):
- I have a MBP that I bring to work with me on a regular basis.
- I have a Sony Vaio + A Desktop both running Windows XP at my home office.
Question: Is it possible to control my Windows machines at home with my MBP while at work (two different places) via VNC?
I recently started my own business and have a MP (see my sig) at home where I do all my work. I have CS4, MS Office, MTR, Handbrake, Toast as well as Parallels with WinXP running. Under Windoze I have another copy of office (Enterprise 2007), Quickbooks Pro and several specialized apps I need for my business. For a variety of reasons, I'll soon be getting a 15" MBP. From a third-party I'll bump the RAM for 2GB to 4GB and get the new 500GB 7200RPM drive.
So, the big question is how do I sync up the machines?I need to make sure I've got the same apps (OS X and Win) as well as keep all the documents sync'd up.Initially, can I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my MP boot drive with all my apps, documents and personal settings to the new 500GB drive? What's the best way to do this initially and going forward?
I am interested to see if any MR users out there use their Mac Pro for running multiple virtual machines concurrently? Plenty of folks run one or two even on a MBP with little problems at all. I am considering running 4 at the same time. Is this going to work? I plan on running Vmware Fusion 3 with 4 virtual machines with Windows 2003 Server Enterprise. This will hopefully work as my all-in-one virtual lab for my security research and development.
I was thinking of an 8 core 2.66 (2009) MP with 24GB of RAM to start with.
How fast are the airs, I need to get a new labtop for college and was pretty much focusing on the pros...i have a 1.83 cd, would a 1.6 c2d be all that faster??? in a way it seems very illogical
View 14 Replies View RelatedHas any one experienced how the MBA Rev A (1.6, 80 GB HD model) handles virtual machines? I need Windows sometimes due to my work (damn you Windows networks) and would love to be able to use my MBA.
I was thinking of using VMWare or VirtualBox from Sun.
The temptation to buy a Mac Pro is, for me, almost irresistible. Now currently I have a MBP which I carry to and from the office each day (can't bare to work on the PCs in the office) and it has about 3Gb of docs, both personal and work related.
I'll want to have those docs on both the MP & MBP and I'll want them in sync. What's the best way to keep those docs in sync? I'd also be curious to hear how people deal with keep their iTunes library in sync across two machines.
how loud are the new machines in general? How much louder do they get under load? How much of the noise is contributed by the graphics card? How do they compare to the 2008 MacPro or to the PowerMac G5?Many questions, I know. I have a G5 Quad 2.5 at the moment, at it is rather loud, especially under load. Back then, I bought it with a better graphics card (7800) and exchanged the graphics card fan with a quieter fan from Zalman. This eliminated the annoying, high-pitched sound, but the complete machine is still very audible.
