IMac :: 2006 IMac Versus 27" Power Consumption?

Oct 24, 2010

I just found this environmental report for the 27" iMac's on Apple's web site, which lists the amount of power they use when off/asleep/idle.

There doesn't seem to be a similar document for the Late 2006 iMac's. I'm just wondering if anybody knows the power consumption stats for the older iMac's (the 20" model in particular) - I'm interested to now how the newer models compare as I'll be buying one soon.

IMac :: Actual Measurement Of Power Consumption

Nov 19, 2009

I'm considering to buy a new iMac (21,5"/nvidia or ati) and I'm wondering if someone has already measured the actual power consumption. In it's environmental paper, Apple documents that it uses less than 2W in sleep mode and 37,5 W with the display off. Did anyone try if this is also measured in real life? I may sound a bit paranoid, but half a year ago I bought a mac mini 2007 at a stock clearance, and I was shocked to find out that just the powerblock plugged in already consumes 8W, the mini itself in standby consumes 11W. Add to that a screen, external speakers and an external disk and the total standby power consumption of the lot is 25W. Terrible.

Besides the energy consumption, I'm also a bit disappointed with the speed of the mini, but that's probably largely due to the low RAM (1GB). So rather than going for the latest mini model, I'd like to go for the power of an iMac. But I would be really happy if someone could confirm the power consumption. Specifically I'm looking for power consumption
- In sleep mode
- While streaming itunes to an airport express, with the display off
(I assume the display goes to sleep automatically when streaming. Right?)
- While in normal, not too heavy operation (eg surfing, mailing & itunes)

IMac :: USB Energy Consumption Error

May 12, 2010

Has anyone else experienced a recurring error stating that the energy consumption of a USB peripheral is too high? I figured it to be one of those no brainer problems, but via process of elimination (plugging and unplugging my keyboard, mouse, and disabling the bluetooth unit) I have been unable to discontinue the message.

Furthermore, after looking through the system profiler, the only usb port that this consuming much of any energy is this isight port but it is still consuming only its allotted 500 mA. I ran the Apple Hardware tests twice and have not discovered any hardware failure. I'm now at a loss with an error message that pops up over the top of the desktop every 30 seconds or so. I'm running 10.6.3 on a 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo Imac.

On my white iMac (Late 2006, 20" C2D 2.16ghz) I've almost filled the puny standard 250MB HD and am planning to have an authorized repair shop replace the drive. (They quoted me $30 plus the cost of the drive -- is that a good price?)Question: what drive should I put in there? I'm planning to go with a 1TB/7200 RPM drive, but can I or should I go bigger? Faster? Which brands to use, or to avoid?

IMac :: Using Gradient With IMac ISight Intel 2006?

May 8, 2009

Recently my iMac had been experiencing problems, I took apart and checked everything and put back together. Problems were gone but the screen suddenly started gradienting from brighter on the top to darker on the bottom. Brightness overall is also lower now.

My question is what can be creating this? The black tape that was around was ripped, I've heard it's creating static isolation, can that be it? Also I possibly pulled power cord too hard, can it be possible that display is not getting enough power?

PowerPC :: Older G5 Versus IMac Versus MacBook Pro For Work

Oct 25, 2007

So I have a 1.8ghz dual G5 with 3gb of ram for work. I mainly work in Adobe CS and do a far amount of Photoshop work. At any given time I may have all of Adobe CS plus Office and a few other apps running -- and a gazillion fonts. Went to the store and saw the new 24" iMac. How would a new iMac compare to my late '04 1.8DP G5? On that same note, how would a new MacBook Pro compare to the above?

IMac :: 24 2.66 Versus 2.93 / Gt130 Versus 4850

Aug 17, 2009

Two short questions on which I really need an answer. This academic year, I'll be writing a lot of papers, but most specifically, I am forced to use SPSS (statistical software package for social sciences).

Will I really need the 2.93 over the 2.66 and notice the improvement?

Same goes for the gfx. I like full-hd 1080, I'll be in InDesign, and use Logic Pro. Will I need "slash" notice the 4850 over the gt130?

Also, are the "hang-ups" with the 4850 truly fixed and does it indeed run a lot hotter (inc. really that more noise) than the gt130?

Hardware :: Leave Charger Plugged In Cause Extra Power Consumption

Aug 5, 2010

So I just got hold of a few of these new battery chargers from Apple and I'm just wondering if these are meant to stay plugged in the wall, even after the green light goes off. Does the light going off mean that the batteries will no longer draw power from the power outlet and that it is safe to assume power will continue to be consumed? Or is it preferred that I plug and unplug the charger only when needed to avoid any, unnecessary, extra power consumption?

IMac :: 27" IMac Pixel Density Versus 30" Cinema Display?

Nov 23, 2009

For anyone who's spent time with the 27" iMac - how do you find the screen's pixel density?

I'm tempted to hand over my 2006 2.66GHz Mac Pro to my daughter and get myself a 27" Core i7 iMac for myself.

I'm 40 years old, and while my eyes are decent, I certainly find an ultra-high dot pitch uncomfortable to use for any length of time. For example, the 1920x1200 resolution on the 17" MacBook Pros is simply too small.

I am currently using a 30" 2560x1600 display and I find that acceptable, but not sure I'd want to go much tighter. I also have an HP laptop from work that has a 17" screen at 1680x1050 which I also find acceptable.

Anyone have any comments they'd like to share? I'll spend some time at the Apple store with a 27" display model for sure but often it takes more than a few minutes of play to determine if the screen will be alright.

IMac :: 2006 Screen Goes Black?

Aug 4, 2009

Let me start by saying I have swapped the ram in the computer and the problem persists. I've also tried resetting the PRAM. I have unplugged all devices except the keyboard and mouse. I have reformatted and installed OS X Leopard, Tiger and Snow Leopard. I have even encountered this issue while the computer was running from the install disk. I'm pretty sure software, ram and third party devices can be eliminated from the possible causes. The computer continues to run after the screen goes black. I am connected to it right now using screen sharing, so I know the computer is still working. Putting the computer to sleep and then waking it up temporarily brings the screen back until its next random blackout. I have opened the computer to replace a dead HD, so I suppose it is possible that I knocked something in the process, but I did that back in December and the problem is a relatively recent development. I would really prefer to fix this myself, if I could only figure out what the problem is.

Or I could go for the octo 2008 2.8ghz for ~2300USD

Is the diff in performance worth the extra ~700?

I use photoshop, aperture as well as video editing soft like FCP.

I need to do it now as they will soon run out of the old 2008 2.8 and I don't want to get stuck with the crappy new upgrade with 4core and max 8gb RAM.

MacBook Air :: 11.6" Compared To 2006 IMac

Oct 20, 2010

I'm trying to make an educated guess regarding the usage experience of the base 11.6" Air by using my 2006 17" iMac for reference. Basically, it boils down to processor generation and speed, which I need help understanding.

iMac = Intel Core Duo T2400 "Yonah" 1.83GHz
11.6" Air = Intel Core 2 Duo 1.4GHz

Other specs I believe are either same or better in the Air:
iMac
2mb L2 cache, 667 MHz bus, 2gb RAM

Air
3mb L2 cache, 800 MHz bus, 2gb RAM

how these two computers compare in terms of usage? My current iMac runs Photoshop CS5 tolerably fast and plays 1080p video just fine.

Desktops :: 2006 IMac External Video Banding?

Aug 18, 2009

I'm experiencing external video banding/noise on a 2006 iMac (2GHz, Core Duo, 20" screen) when using Apple's video adapter (RGB to RCA/S-Video); I use it to connect my iMac's video output to my TV.

The noise is basically diagonal lines running top to bottom/left to right across the TV screen. They are faint and are more like ripples in the screen. It almost seems as though it's not grounded correctly.

I noticed this issue when I first got the computer; I switched the adapter back and forth between my iBook and the iMac and the noise was only evident on the iMac's output. I called Apple and they refused to deal with it, suggesting it was due to the video cable length (20 feet) even though the iBook was fine.

IMac :: Transfer Files From Dead 2006 17'' To Another Computer?

Sep 21, 2010

I have a Windows 7 custom-built PC and I also have an old, first generation Intel iMac from 2006. The iMac was running only Windows XP. The reason for that was that the screen of the iMac got cracked. I connected another monitor using mini-DVI connector and installed XP on the thing while I still could see certain things behind the broken screen. The reason I chose Windows was because in the Windows Intel Graphics Configurator program I had the ability to disable the main iMac screen and use the attached display as the main one. I did not have such option in OS X. I could select the attached display as the main one but could not shut down the iMac screen.

Anyway, it has been a year since then. Today my Windows OS on the iMac became corrupted. But, of course.. I cannot see what the error message says during boot because the iMac screen is broken completely now. The attached display only turns on when fully booted into Windows. So, I cannot reinstall Windows.. I cannot do anything. There were some important files on the iMac which I want to recover. I have SATA to USB controller which I used before on my computers but, from what I understand, these iMacs have laptop hard drives with different connectors. Can someone please guide me to a specific controller which I could use to connect the iMac HD to my Windows PC and transfer the files? I would be very, very thankful. My iMac is a late 2006 17'' model with 150GB hard drive.

IMac :: 20" (2006) Insomnia - Wakes Up Randomly With LCD Off

Jan 4, 2011

I have an "Early 2006" model iMac that has been acting a bit funny lately. This is the white 20" Rev A, first-of-it's-kinda Intel Core Duo iMac. Now it's been running pretty well since I got it almost 5 years ago. But lately some of it's activity is puzzling me. Late at night I'll be working on my MacBook and suddenly the iMac will awake from sleep mode. The fans whirl, the DVD drive makes it's usual noises, and the screen remains... blank. Seconds later the sleep light turns on and the computer returns to sleep mode. This happened again this morning when I was sitting at my desk.

I have no idea what's causing this, however it's slightly different behavior to what has happened months ago. Previously the iMac would wake up by itself in a similar fashion, but it's screen would be on and it would act like I pressed the space bar to wake it up. These activities happen randomly, and it's not too frequent, but often enough for me to be confused about this whole thing. I thought that maybe an IR remote was sending out a signal to the iMac. The iMac faces a small window in my room, so the chances are slim that this is the case, I believe I've turned off the IR sensor on the iMac, which may have solved the issue, but I have since turned it back on since I use the remote regularly. Unless there's some IR beam shooting around in my room I can't think of why this would be happening. The machine is of course out of it's AppleCare, so I'm wondering if any of you have ever heard of or experienced this problem. Any help would be great, thanks!

OS X :: IMac 24" 2006 - Odd Pixelated Line On Screen?

Jan 14, 2010

I have a late 2006 24" IMac which has a myriad of issues. The most concerning to me at this point is the occasional appearance of a 1-2 pixel wide horizontal line which runs from 2" across to sometimes as much as 12" across the screen. It happens most often on the desktop and in firefox. It disappears as mysteriously as it appears.

Could the graphics card be going bad? Any ideas on what might be happening and how I might be able to solve this.

PowerPC :: Looking Upgrade IMac (2006) And IBook (2004)

May 1, 2010

I was planning to upgrade our family's computers to a new MBP 13 inch with a 320 HDD and a iMac 3.06 GHz base model.

I was going to do a the Apple financing of no interest for 18 months since the 13 inch MBP came out but after reading online that an iMac update may be out in the near future I am wondering if I should wait.

Would like advice on whether I should just buy the 2 computers now and not worry or should I wait for next iMac. We have five kids that are using the computers and iPhones/iPods and speed is what they want for web-based games. The iBook is fine for me doing Quicken, e-mail and normal stuff but is seizing up sometimes. Hard Drive space is biggest issue since iMac only has around 160 gig HDD.

Everything I have read I believe that these 2 computers will be fine. We hold computers for 5 years and so I am getting to end of life on the ones I have.

My wife has also been using a 2006 circa MacBook Pro 17 inch that I use for work and loves it. She thought the 13 inch MBP keyboard was smaller but I told her I believe they are the same.
