OS X Technologies :: Automator Workflow Fails With Cryptic Error Message

Mar 14, 2012

I'm updating an Automator workflow for OS X Lion that I initally developed and used, without issue, in OS X Tiger. The workflow asks for a name, creates a folder for the name, takes a digital image with a Nikon D50 connected to the computer, and saves the image to the new folder. This aspect of the workflow works fine.

I then have a prompt asking if we should take another. If the user says "yes," the script should take another image and save it to the folder. This is where I run into an issue. When I attempt to add another "Take a Picture Action" into the workflow, I get the cryptic (at least to me) error message in the attached screenshot.

Here's the text:

"Cannot update for observer <AMWorkflow 0x400458ac0> for the key path "parameters.name" from <TakePicture 0x403e3b0a0>, most likely because the value for the key "parameters" has changed without an appropriate KVO notification being sent. Check the KVO-compliance of the TakePicture class."

The language of this error would seem to indicate a bug.

Software :: Update Fails To Connect To The Internet

Aug 12, 2005

Mac OS 10.4.2
G4 (AGP)

I just moved to a new home and unfortunatly my fast internet connection through DSL (3.0 Mbits/sec) had to be changed to something a lot slower running over DirecWay satellite. Whenever I run the software update utility, I get a dialog box that pops up and says, "A networking error has occured: bad server response (-1011). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again. Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem."

Diagnostics pass, doing standard Internet tasks works just fine, as a matyer of fact, I can connect to the internet, surf, download email, etc. There is nothing different about the system other then I use a different internet provider. I'm wondering does Software Update look for a certain connection speed before timing out? I never got the (-1011) error before moving over to DirecWay.

Intel Mac :: Software Update - In All Its Forms - Fails?

Mar 18, 2012

Whenever I click on the Apple logo and Software Update, the progress bar gets to about 20% in 3 or 4 seconds and then never moves again. I've left it for over an hour, no change. If I go to Boot Camp Assistant and try to Download the latest Windows support software from Apple, it gets to about 5% in 3 or 4 seconds and then never moves again. I can download from the web and other internet based services work. I am running Lion 10.7.3 on a 2011 iMac. I've tried creating a new user. I've also tried starting in Safe Mode. I have reinstalled Lion. No change.

"Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem." However, my internet connection works fine for everything else. I do have two peripheral drives connected. One of them had the same system as my main drive. However, the problem persists even when they are disconnected and I reboot. I can get the updates if I reboot from the peripheral.

Software :: OS X Update Fails - Volume Does Not Meet Requirements

The installation program says: "Mac OS X Update Combined can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." According to the Disk Utility, the Partition Map Scheme is GUID Partition Table. Some people have listed this as a requirement. What is the real reason for the failure?

QuickTime :: 10.1 Fails Since Lion Update - Required Codec Not Available

Mar 20, 2012

Since updating to Lion, and subsequently to QuickTime 10.1, many movies that worked fine before won't open now. I get an error that says, "A required codec is not available." Two things make this even more frustrating:

1. Some movies of the same type still open just fine. I can't seem to find a pattern that links the ones that won't open.
2. The movies that won't open are still available to preview in Finder. If they will play in Finder, why not in QuickTime? Isn't it just a QickTime "plug-in" that plays them in the Finder?

MacBook Pro :: Fails To Boot Properly After EFI Firmware 27 Update

Apr 16, 2012

I have a strange boot issue having (tried) to install EFI 2.7 update. When I restart the laptop, it 'chimes', displays a grey screen, then chimes, displays a grey screen, forever. I hit the bower (off) button for 5 secs or thereabouts, and restart, same thing. I do this 4 times and finally it reboots. But the EFI update still appears as needing to be installed (software update tells me it is not installed). Update history shows however that it IS installed. I can go through this process any number of times. I now have Software Update history showing quite a few installs opf the EFI 2.7 update. If I just do a restart without installing, I also go through the same fail to restart / fail to start / ... / eventually restart sequence.

So it seems now that the laptop will only start after 4 failed restarts and finally it starts. After starting it all appears to be perfectly fine. Nothing strange in the console logs that I can see. The failed reboots don't seem to register in the console logs - I suspect that the failure to restart is pretty early on in the boot sequence, well before it tries to load any semblance of the OSX kernel. It is almost as if it is trying to boot from someplace other than the disk ... until eventually it gives up and tries the disk. (I have tried booting with and without network cable - no difference) I don't know enough about mac bootup sequences to know if there is some config/setting that is screwed up causing this odd behaviour.

Mac Mini :: After Last Update Wired Keyboard Fails - No Longer Responds

Apr 2, 2012

I have a Mac mini (~2008) running Snow Leopard. I updated my software today (haven't done this in probably several months) and immediately afterword, my Apple aluminum wired keyboard no longer responds. (The mouse when attached through the keyboard also no longer responds.) However, the keyboard still functions just fine on a separate MacBook Pro that I have, it just won't work on the Mac Mini. (I tried different USB ports with no difference.)

I wasn't smart enough to write down what upgrades actually occurred prior to my last update, but there were only 4 items (I think one was Safari, one was iTunes). If there are no better ideas, I guess I will have to try a system restore from Time Machine which predates my latest bad "update". I'd rather not have to go there if I don't have to.

OS X Mavericks :: Time Machine Recovery Fails At 85%

Jun 1, 2014

I have a mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro running Mavericks, and a new 2 TB Time Capsule. I'm trying to install a new internal SSD to replace the four-year old one it came with. I swapped the new SSD in with no trouble, and booted my computer into Internet Recovery. I selected the option to rebuild my machine based on a Time Machine backup, and it churns away for a while until it hits about 85% installed, and then it reboots (and fails to startup properly, giing me a spinner on the gray apple screen).

The new SSD is twice the size of the old one. I've put it in an external enclosure and mounted it, ran disk utility on it to make sure that it's working properly. I can't think what else to do, and I can't imagine why it fails at the same point in the rebuild every time!

OS X Mavericks :: Calendar Fails To Sync Between IMac And Other Devices

Jun 25, 2014

Syncing calendars between my iMac and devices continues to fail horribly.

It really never has functioned well from the Mountain Lion days. With Mavericks, Calendar syncing is useless. Must be rocket science!

If the system doesn't double everything up, it gets appointment times incorrectly.

Seems like Apple has determined that the iPad is Grand Lord of all calendar data—not the iMac. You can delete the data file on the iPad with SyncMac but the data is not gone. It remains in the iPad permanently waiting to take over.

This morning I used SyncMac to delete the data on the iPad to rid it of incorrect appointment times. Syncing again did nothing to fix the issue. Appointment times are all different and totally incorrect in the iPad compared to the correct data in the iMac.

I give up on the application. Print a blank calendar, have a pencil ready, and maintain your data the old fashioned way.

It used to just work. Not anymore and especially since iCloud which I will not use. I have no interest in giving my data to a second party in a foreign country so that they can grant me permission to access it. My clients don't agree to this arrangement. Nor do I.

When i checked for updates using the software update there is message that sezs :

"Failed to check for update. There was a problem communicating with the web proxy server (HTTP)."

I am on line posting this message so it can't be an Internet server problem on the Mother ship ( the main Macintosh hard drive ).
